Great pho. Great service. Some of the best pho Ive had in the Cities. The location is great.

One of my go to places with friends and family for Vietnamese food in Minneapolis. One side is for Pho 79 and the otherwise is Caravelle for Chinese food but you can sit on either side and order from either menu. My go to meal is an order of egg rolls, spring rolls and a bowl of Pho tai bo vien. Everything I have eaten here is good. If you have room for dessert try the Che ba Mau (tricolor) read more

I tore myself away from my usual Eat Street haunts last night so that I could join my friends at Pho 79. Pho 79 is respectable among the pho community, as far as I'm concerned. Not the best, certainly not the worst. The sesame chicken wings are a favorite o' mine---so caramelized that you can't take a bite without getting parts of them glued to your teeth. Not a first date food. Although, if you're silly enough to order chicken wings on a first date, I think you deserve it. The pho tai (beef pho) is OK. The broth is delightful, but the beef just doesn't seem as good as Quangs. And there is SOMETHING going on with the noodles in the bowl... it's like a birds nest of rice noodles that cannot be un-nested! The service is usually great. Yesterday, the guy (who seemed like the owner) took our drink orders and then popped our beer bottles open one-by-one with a FORK. The caps were flying all over the place---practically hitting people in the face! It was AWESOME! The fact that you can order beer here is a big plus. They are crazy-cheap all the time ($3.49 for Blue Moon, Sapporo, etc.). read more

Where am I? Are you Pho 79 or Caravelle?!! --- Those were running through my head when i got seated on the right side of the building among bunch of people eating off a buffet table of chinese food. The waitress, clearly recognizing my confused/dazed look, told me that I can order food from Caravelle (chinese cuisine) or Pho 79 and gave me a combined menu. Ok so my obvious complaint about this place is the name. I don't understand if it used to be independent owners and they are trying to keep the two separate (which I don't think you can unless you itemize everything). But anyway, it doesn't work! There is no actual divide from right aka 'chinese food/buffet' side or left 'vietnamese food' side. And frankly, I doubt customers would care if a restaurant with ONE name, offers both cuisine. Food: Nem rolls: So good! I never had this before but it was wrapped differently -- rather than typical eggroll wrapping style, it was just rolled. It had some pork and fried wrappers in there that tasted like chinese doughnuts. Recommend for sure! Pho 79: Yum! This was so meaty and had loads and loads of noodles. But my soup was tad over salted. I would come back for this though! Seafood noodle soup: The soup is like traditional wonton noodle soup (holler to my mom!). But the shrimp was flavorless and the noodles were overcooked. A dud. Service: Crapshoot. The lady who came with our dishes and beansprouts/vegs nearly threw them on our table as she was running to take orders. In contrast, another lady, who left and picked up the bill, helped me pick up my cards as I clumsily dropped the contents of my wallet. Gotta take your chances here. Overall, I would come back again. Based on food alone I'd say it was a 4 star, but with the disorganization and inconsistent service I knocked it off one. P.S. I am not the only one struggling with matching name to the "side" of the establishment. Lady and her child didn't know to leave tip on the table (right side of bldg) or the cashier (left side of bldg) because she had pho but was seated among the masses eating fried rice. The owner needs to learn about commitment and take only one! read more

A buddy at work invited me to take a trip down Nicollet's Eat Street Pho 79 for some major soup action. I think this place is like 2 restaurants in one, but we went to the Pho side. We both ordered the main Pho 79 which consisted of meatballs cut up, some brisket, some tripe and these gross fat globs that I could have done without. The bowl was HUGE! I dumped a lot of sriracha sauce into it and the meats inside were fantastic. The beef broth was wonderful and all the meats were succulent. The tripe (Cow intestine) was really rubbery, which it is supposed to be was cool and the sriracha was making me sweat by the end of the meal. The sliced meatballs were my favorite, they could have used more, but seriously, all the meat included was amazing, especially dipped in the hoisen sauce and sriracha mixture I made. The noodles were perfect, not too shabby, just perfect. They had these glops of fat in there like slices of fat to make it "Taste" better, but I could have done without them. I think I placed about 10 of the fat slices off on my side plate by the time we were done. The service was fantastic, lots of great refilling of our water and the huge bowl of Pho was like $8. A great Pho place! read more

The vegetarian soup uses Chicken broth. My friends at soup was cold, my other friend's food was cold and bland, they spilled the soup on my friend as they were serving it, and the plates they initially gave us were dirty. And all around terrible experience. read more

When I am too lazy to make a pot of pho at home I'll stop by here just because its one of the most decent places in Minneapolis. They give you a nice portion and usually are very quick on the service. Same restaurant as caravelle right next door which serves more home style Vietnamese foods which is also very good. Reason not for the extra star is for all the business and years they have put into this location they really REALLY need to do a remodel of some sorts it looks dated right when you walk in and the service isn't always up to par depending on who you get. I always seem to get the Pho dac biet ( which pretty much has everything you can imagine in it) and either the chicken wings which are really great or the shrimp eggrolls again you can't go wrong unless you don't like seafood of course. p.s make sure you get in the doors at least 30min before closing time. We were there at 8pm and around 8:45 saw a couple try to get a seat and was told take out only. read more

Pho 79 is not one of your 99 problems. I have to try pho anywhere I go, this place was open on the 4th so I was in luck before the Twins game. -Good portion size bowl. -Fresh veggies. -Broth is excellent. -Meat was good and tender. I loved their pho, had everything I wanted in a bowl. Will have to try it again when I am in town, pho is an addiction that I must feed. read more

My five Vietnamese friends and I came here for lunch on a Monday and we loved it! The portions are large and flavorful as well. Service was on the slow side, but pretty decent, especially for a Vietnamese restaurant. FRIED WONTONS: just like Chinese crab rangoons, they were crunchy and had a yummy cream cheese filling inside. Dip it with the red sauce! PHO TAI BO VIEN: definitely hit the spot! The broth was meaty and a little sweet, just like I like it! Overall, the restaurant is large and perfect for larger parties... prices are pretty good as well. I would definitely recommend it for those with a Pho craving! read more

Dirty, run-down establishment. Food is bad, staff is rude. Just a gross excuse for a restaurant.

I still love this place with all my heart. I went on a Pho spree and visited once a week for a few months. Staff are friendly and if you order a beer the guy will pop the top off with the back of a fork. He does it every time, but always acts like it's the first time we've seen it. I still order the exact same thing each time Bun #43A. They have the most delicious and appropriately spiced curry on top of the delicious noodles, mint, lettuce, carrot mixture. I mix up the appetizers with stuffed grape leaves, bubble tea, egg rolls or fried spring rolls. Go there because - You cannot beat the price $7.60 for a full belly-o-noodle-goodness - You need to learn a new way of opening a beer bottle. Try the Tsing Tao - It will always taste fresh. Freshest of Fresh! - The food comes out fast, you wont be left waiting read more

It was okay. Out the dishes we ordered, the shaken beef was the best. The mi xao don was average and the canh chua was decent.

I had the #12 Pho and my daughter had the lemongrass chicken. Both were amazing. Wish we lived nearby to frequent this place often. Plus, everyone who worked there were so nice!!!! Definitely will return whenever we are in Minneapolis again! read more

This makes me miss California. Pho and com tam were both painfully lacking from what I know. Eggrolls and springrolls weren't great either. I guess what's nice about Vietnamese food is that it isn't pricey. Passes for Minnesota I guess? read more

The fam decided to come here to celebrate a couple of birthdays (hey, we keep a tight budget), so Mom, sister, and bro-in-law sat down last Thursday night for some critically-acclaimed Vietnamese. On the whole, we all were pleased with our food, but on the other hand, none of us felt the wow factor. The pork egg rolls were definitely a hit, and you can't go wrong with cream cheese wantons. The mistake all of us may have made was not ordering from the tastiest section of the menu. My sis and I both ordered Com Tam (rice entrees), and there really just wasn't a whole lot going on with our meals. Mainly just a heap of rice and some bland meat. My bro-in-law got the sesame chicken...again, decent, but something was just a bit off. Maybe the problem is that I'm just not that into noodles... read more

Pho is the specialty here with several kinds to choose from. It shares a building with a Chinese restaurant so go through the door and stay left. It has older furnishings and the layout is L shaped with community tables in the front and more regular seating in the side. I had the Pho 79 special, and honestly I think I prefer chicken pho better but the broth was great as were the additional basil/lime/jalapeno/sprout fixings - nice and fresh. They have a lunch buffet that is a very good value. Pay at the register on the way out. There is some limited parking on the side of the building. read more

My fiance and I decided to try something different than our normal eat street favs (Pho Hoa and Jasmine) so we decided on Pho 79. Since I practically was exposed to south east Asian food all my life- I can tell if i am eating authentic Viet, Khmer or Thai food... I'll admit the noodle soup aka pho was tasty. I can even smell the Cinnamon.. yup, there's Cinnamon in Pho. will i come here again? maybe if Quang or Pho Hoa is closed. read more

I made the mistake of "trying something new" today. Usually, I abide to that rule and tend to end up successful. In today's case however, this was not so. My parents and I like to go to the same restaurant whenever we dine out altogether. They are very picky when it comes to food, so when I'm with them, I stick to whatever they're comfortable with. We switched things up and decided to try Pho 79. Bad idea folks. When we entered, it looked promising. I appreciated the traditional Vietnamese music that was playing and how quaint the place seemed. My mom order the Bun Thit Nuong, I ordered the Mi Hoanh Thanh and my dad ordered the Pho. Once our meals arrived, I was eager to try my dish but unfortunately, minutes into sipping my broth, my mom leaned over to me and told me that her vermicelli noodles were bad. I looked at her and said, "What?" & she repeated herself. She told me they smelt and tasted sour after one single bite. She said that she can tell that these noodles have been out for awhile. My mom is a talented cook, so to me, this was a disgrace to her. I was personally livid. This is NOT what customers should be served especially when we've never even been to this restaurant before. We called the waitress over and when we told her, she looked both stunned and concerned, so she took the dish back. She came out 5 minutes later with a bowl of new noodles. My mom told me she could tell that they just put the eggroll and the grilled pork from the old dish onto the new noodles because of how messy the presentation looked. I agreed with her. I do have to admit that I liked how the grilled pork was marinated as did my mom (note: this pork helped save the rating I gave them). The crispiness of the eggroll was on point but the ingredients inside the eggroll were blahhhh. She said that these noodles were new unlike the last bowl. Even though they quickly resolved what could have been worse, this doesn't take away from the fact that they messed up in the first place. Noodles that went bad should be THROWN OUT and NOT served to customers. I sure hope that no one else ate them because despite the big mistake, my mom still paid full price for the bowl. My dad informed me that his pho lacked flavor. The broth was basic and did not have the "pho" nomenal smell that a proper bowl of pho should have. They also thinly sliced the meatballs which is also atypical. As for my Mi Hoanh Thanh, I enjoyed the wontons (even though they were smaller with less meat than other places) but not the mi. The egg noodles were not well made, and the broth, much like the pho broth, was flavorless. We will not be coming back to this restaurant. Their service was mediocre and I can't risk the possibility that they may serve us food that's gone bad again. Not worth stopping in and I can tell you that this place doesn't have anything to rave about. There are plenty of better places to try on Eat Street. read more

Overall good experience for first timers. Big food portions, inexpensive. Boyfriend had Kung pao chicken level 4 spice out of 5 an it was pretty bland. Entree came with fried rice and egg roll. We also ordered shrimp spring rolls which were typical and wontons which were good. I had pho ga with meatball added in. Huge portion, your basic pho. I liked it but it wasn't over the top delicious. Fast, friendly service. We would go again. read more

Whenever I am in Minneapolis and hungry, I go here. Who doesn't love a one stop shop of the best Asian dishes - pho, bun salad, spicy squid and pad thai!?! Honestly, I make the 30 minute drive for the 5 SpiceSquid dish which is my favorite meal from this place. That alone is worth the trip. If only their service could be better. MAGICAL. The food here is amazing. Their soups can cure any ailment. Anything I swear. The service is friendly and quick! To go orders are done in 10-15 minutes and dining in is even faster! We usually go to Quang when in the area, but it was sleeting as we came out of Vertical Endeavors after some climbing and couldn't bring ourselves to walk that far in the cold. We made it as far as across the street, and found ourselves inside Pho 79. Everything the three of us had was amazing. Sesame Chicken, Pho Tai, Eggrolls, Appetizer plate, Pho w/Shrimp. Everything was very fresh tasting and well cooked. I'm pretty sure this place is a hidden gem. It deserves to have more business than Quang. It's noticeably better. Even though the dining room is kind of small and outdated, the service was quick and everything was quite clean. The prices were also quite reasonable. The three of us together got out of there for under $20 total. This is definitely my new go-to Vietnamese place. Wish they stayed open a bit later, but that's ok. I'll work them in to my schedule :-) read more

This place is a longtime favorite of my family. My father is good friends with the owner and we have been coming here since I can remember. We ordered family style of the canh chua ca hoac, ca kho to, muc hoac bo xao cai chua, and tofu voi rau cai. It was all so delicious and homecooked. I can try and explain the food, but you really need to just go and try it for yourself. The canh chua is a sour sop soup with fish, pineapples, and other veggies. The ca kho to is catfish cooked a claypot, which is phenomenally delicious. I highly recommend this place! read more

A hole in the wall, but great food and fast service. Food: I always order the Pho79 special or their Rice dishes. They give such a generous amount that I never finish the entire bowl. The broth is very flavorful as well. Usually right before I leave, I grab a tri-color jelly dessert to go. If you like coconut, sweets and something cold, this would be the dessert for you. Service: It seems like every Pho restaurant has fast service since everything might be prepared ahead of time. Be careful that if your party is big, they might have included a service charge. They did not tell me when I went and I did not realized that I tipped them twice, until my friends told me. Make sure you ask. Ambiance: The décor is nothing special, but the food makes it worth it. Misc.: I have been back numerous times and you should too! read more

Pho 79 - Number 45 - Vietnamese Near Me - Minneapolis, Minnesota

The pho here is different from other places in town, a bit of clove flavor(or anise flavor) in the broth. They also have a 10 dollar version that has some much nicer beef in it, but the beef in the regular pho is acceptable(especially compared with other pho places in town). Their Bun Bo Hue is also my favorite in the Twin Cities, I haven't eaten Bun Bo Hue since Bona in the 80-90s. Another delicious thing on their menu are the tiny shrimp egg rolls they have. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD!! Is it possible to eat here everyday? If I could, I would. True Vietnamese food and so, so good. I don't think you understand how much I love this place! Best pho in town. Best pork in town. Best spring rolls... everything is so fresh and perfect and they are so fast. How? It's like they are psychic bc I have never waited more than 10-15 minutes for food. Also their vermicelli salads are really, really good and they have a pork one that the pork is marinated in this sweet and savory sauce and grilled. Just like my friends mom makes. I came in with two kids and a double stroller, the woman at the reception was rude and didn't allow me to sit on the coach and said me to sit at the window. Ok, but I couldn't go between the tables as they were so close to each other so I chose to sit at the corner and moved the chairs so I could put the stroller instead, and she came to me saying I can't sit there and showed me another table. She didn't even try to help me go through the tables and I just went to another place. Very rude and not professional at all. read more

OMG. Absolute worse service I've ever had. In. My. Life. I will never be going back. I wish I could give them a zero rating but you have to give them at least one star, which is bullshit. They bring us back to a table that still needed to be cleaned off so we had to stand there while they did so. They bring us waters right away which was great, but sat us with no menus. We wait about 10 minutes before I have to go up to the counter to ask for them.. we choose our orders and wait at least another 15 min before anyone came back to take our order. We finally order and our appetizers came pretty quickly afterwards. Awesome. Then another 15 min or so go by and my bf and his son get their meals. I wait about 15 min before waving another waitress down because I haven't gotten my pho, which is the quickest god damn thing to make on the menu. My bf and his son were almost done eating before my boiling hot liquid meal comes out. Obviously, I can't just dig in. After we all finally finish, without even being checked on once by our waitress, I head to the restroom and NO TP!!!! We sit at the table waiting for our check and to grab a couple boxes for our left overs. Again, we waved someone down for both. Plus! This whole disaster of an experience took over 2 hours!!! We will never be going back there. read more

So I finally got to experience Pho 79 on Nicollet. And let me tell you, it was a sticky, dingy, but delicious experience. I have to say I was disappointed by how dirty the restaurant seemed - tables seemed sticky, there was a weird smell, I was slightly apprehensive about the cups, and there were a couple of flies bothering us throughout the meal. I was also a bit disappointed by the service. Our server seemed confused as we ordered so we had to repeat our order a few times, and when the appetizers came out she had misunderstood some of what we said and brought us the wrong thing. Our drinks came out after the food. Normally a situation like this would get a rating much lower than 4 stars, but all was forgiven when we tried the food... The food is so good, you guys. The wontons were crispy and had a ton of cream cheese in them, Boyfriend said the egg rolls were just like his grandma used to make (she is from Vietnam), the iced coffee was perfect, and the beef in the pho was super tender. Boyfriend's egg roll salad had a perfect ratio of ingredients. My only minor complaint about the food is you don't get fresh cilantro with your pho, and that's really petty even for me. Bottom line: I really recommend everything I had - the egg rolls, iced coffee, wontons, and the pho. Yes the restaurant could use a deep clean, but with food this good there seems to be a consensus that you just eat and mind your own business. read more

For the prices that their food comes at, this place is a gem. It doesn't pretend to be fancy, and it isn't. It's just simple, good food. Their Pho is cheap and the broth is pretty flavorful, the portions are also very large. Even the cheaper smaller Pho bowl entrees are super big and filling. Their entrees come with sides a lot of the time, and the portions are huge. The vegetarian/tofu options and their spring rolls are SO good. I would also recommend trying the pork. The service in my experience was pretty quick as long as you look like you're ready to order. Waiters have no problem with you making eye contact with them to get them to come over. I'm not from MN, but this is definitely a great place I'll be stopping by again for a quick cheap meal. As many have mentioned, the only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the cleanliness. It's not ideal, but you get what you pay for, and I'll take bringing my own hand sanitizer for the cheap delicious food. read more

This was the first time coming to this restaurant and I can honestly say I was extremely disappointed. Upon being seated, I noticed that's the floors seemed oily or sticky... The tables were sticky and wet as well... The waitress was not attentive. My bf cousin and I ordered pho, chicken wing, chicken fried rice, Steamed pork dumplings and steamed shrimp dumplings. From all of those items the chicken wings were the best. Everything else was tasteless. I would not order any thing from this location again. I was highly disappoint. Even the restroom was filthy... My family enjoys Pho 79/Caravelle but I generally only come once a blue moon. Food is just as good as any other Vietnamese place but what sets it apart is the plethora of menu options to choose from! I just plain found this restaurant to be underwhelming in both atmosphere and food quality and taste. I don't go into a place expecting fancy, but I do expect cleanliness and no off-putting smells. The table and the "lazy susan" were sticky and the floors were filthy. The service left a lot to be desired as well. I was in a party of 6, one of whom was forgotten about and served her meal when the rest of us were almost finished. I ordered spring rolls for an appetizer and enjoyed them, for my meal I chose beef pad Thai and wasn't impressed with that. It lacked flavor and wasn't spicy at all and I requested medium spice. I had to keep adding red chili sauce to it for both heat and flavor. I haven't decided yet whether I'll try it again, and it'll be hard at this point to choose to come here over Quangs. read more

I love pho. I love pho after a night of drinking or simply on the weekend with a bunch of friends. I've been here numerous times and the pho never changes. It's not my favorite place, maybe my second favorite. The sesame wings are so sticky and good. We've always tried to figure out what it is that makes them so sticky. Anyway-- you can never go wrong with their pho 79 which comes with every kind of meat. Some are skeptical about eating the meat that's in it because they've never had such meat with weird texture. For example the cartilage is my favorite oddly. If you don't like to try different things, I'd recommend just the sliced beef and meatballs. OR... there are ones with chicken, pork and seafood which I've had and loved them all. The bun salad is also really yummy and healthy!! My favorite is the beef with shrimp. Oh and the egg rolls are also really good. The shrimp egg rolls are tiny little bites that should not be shared. There are two types of spring rolls-- pork with shrimp or shredded pork.. oh and nam nuang( however that is spelled). If you're feeling adventurous try the shredded pork or the nam nuang. Both are delicious. Don't forget your Vietnamese coffee for an extra kick to your day! read more

YES! Glorious, wonderous, steamy soup! This place is quick and delicious. I've tried several soups (granted I am not that adventurous in the meat department) and recommend the one with wontons in it. The chicken one is far too simple and basic, but if you're not into tendon or raw meat, the wonton one is the way to go. Again, service is quick, water glasses kept filled (important with the amount of spicy condiments I apply) and herbs are plentiful and fresh. Just sit down, order, eat and pay at the counter. read more
