This is our go to pho spot if we don't go to Pho Tempo. Usually we get amazing and fast service. On July 4th, we went around 1 and got sat down within 3 minutes. They forgot about us and kept saying they'll be right back to take our order. I said after 30 minutes, I'm just going to leave. They finally came to take our orders. Waited another 15 minutes for food to come out for 2 of us. Never got our water refilled. People after us got sat right away and got their orders take right away. Even got their food before us. I told my bf we can't go there anymore unless we're non-Asian. Everyone else got better service than us. read more

This place has decent Vietnamese food. We ordered some more authentic Vietnamese food than we usually does, which was cá kho t and canh chua cá. This review is based on my preference of vietnam food: I prefer saltier version of these dishes since I'm used to northern Vietnamese styled food, so if you like southern Vietnamese styled food. Hence, I thought both of the dishes were sweeter than how I would like. That being sad, I thought the soup was lack of sour taste and could use some tamarin to spice things up. The quail was also somewhat sweeter than how I'd like them. They also server broken rice instead of jasmine rice, which I thought was odd. The service was fast and server was friendly. I basically get the same thing every time...order of pork egg rolls, rare lean beef and rib eye with extra noodles and meatballs. Pretty solid choice if you're not into the tendons and stuff. What you see is what you get for service, pretty much get everything you need when they take your order because you might not see your server again until you get the check. Which is totally fine for me, I mean you can flag someone down but they're running around like crazy from tables to register to kitchen. The food has always been good. Pho is a slam dunk and the pork egg rolls are always nice and fresh. Plus, they give really sturdy plastic containers for take out or left overs. I don't go to a lot of Vietnamese restaurants so I don't have a lot of comparisons, but Pho 79 is gooood. read more

We arrived at around 12 noon. The place was not busy and we were seated immediately. Upon sitting our drink order was taken and brought to us within 5 mins. I knew what I wanted and we proceeded to taking our order. I ordered the Pho Special 79 and the wife ordered egg noodle seafood bowl. The appetizer was the grilled pork spring rolls. Good taste with a crunchy texture. Our pho's came out within 10 mins and we were grubbing. I tasted the broth and as to my surprise tasted as expected. I squeezed a piece of lime and a few basil leaves. The flavor in my opinion is catered to the American folks. Although, the other dishes may taste different. Anyhow, go try for yourself and hopefully your taste buds think different of my review here!!! read more

Ah, pho. As someone who has perfected her own Pho recipe, I find I have fairly high standards. But I really enjoyed our first visit to this restaurant and am sure we will be back. Like a lot of Asian restaurants, the sheer number of options on the menu is pretty overwhelming. But it basically breaks down into three categories: 1) Super safe combos a la any Chinese restaurant you've ever been to... rice, egg roll and your choice of sesame chicken, general tso chicken, etc. Though I will say that someone in our party got the sesame chicken and it was pretty good for sesame chicken. 2) Pho -- that's the Vietnamese soup, usually with noodles and some sort of protein. 3) Noodle salad bowls... cold noodles, some kind of meat, lettuce, carrot and other fresh veggies. In some cases with eggroll. But those are the basic categories. I generally think that everything our group ordered was very good, and fairly authentic. My husband received a giant plate of sprouts and Thai basil for his pho soup (LOVED the Thai basil touch). Serving sizes were generous. Eggrolls were excellent. And all food was super hot (temperature, not spicy). I also really enjoyed that they put not only soy sauce but FISH sauce right on the table so that you could serve yourself. To me, Pho is not Pho without a good healthy squirt or two of fish sauce, but I appreciate that some people don't like the taste, and I really appreciated the fact that Pho 79 lets you adjust your own level. We ordered the Five spice fried squid, Braised catfish in clay pot, and the Sweet and sour vegetable soup with catfish aka 'Canh chua ca' in the hot pot size (you could order this soup with shrimp and in a bowl, smaller version!). Traditionally, the braised catfish and the sweet and sour vegetable soup are always eaten together! I personally like my soup with the catfish because it's just better than the shrimp one. ⁣ ⁣ The Five spice squid dish is so flavorful and well-seasoned as well as the braised catfish and soup. Canh chua. I honestly cannot think of a better way to explain this but to encourage you to try these dishes if you're here!⁣ ⁣ These sharable dishes always come with a size of rice and are supposed to be shared, family style. This is plenty for 3 a 4 people! They make great lunch and dinner option for hot summer days and even cold snowy winter days! Pho 79 is a no frills place to get some delicious Vietnamese food. The restaurant is surrounded by many other places to eat on Nicollet, but this one remains to be one of my favorites. It's super chill on the inside. Service is typically quick and efficient. I've always appreciated that. There's a lot of tasty looking food in the menu, although I tend to float between just a few go to items. I'm always satisfied that way. The pho is really flavorful here. They give you a good amount too. It's comparable to others in the area in that regard. I really love the egg roll noodle salad. The egg rolls are crispy with lots of filling and a slightly juicy, savory flavor. They usually have a decent amount of veggies hidden underneath the bed of noods. This restaurant is worth frequenting regularly. They do a great job with service and food. I've never been let down and will continue to dine here again and again. read more

While visiting Minneapolis, I was feeling the onset of a cold and rushed out to find some Pho Ga in an attempt to fight it off. It was a bit after the lunch rush, so the restaurant was not crowded. Ordered the Pho Ga and it came out fairly quickly. While I was waiting, I asked for the password to the WiFi network. Allegedly the password is their phone number. They appear to have two phone numbers - I tried both phone numbers multiple times but could not connect to their WiFi network. Back to the Pho - it was a chicken broth, but rather ordinary. Very light in flavor. Not bad, just not the rich Pho Ga broth experience I was hoping for. The broth was steaming and I added the plate of accoutrements (bean sprouts, basil, jalapeños, and squeezed in the juice from the lime wedge). The plate of stuff was fresh. I periodically added squirts of Sriracha sauce to bites and to the broth to spice it up. Overall, a rather ordinary bowl of Pho Ga. Service was good. read more

Pho 79 is one of my alternative spots if I am looking to break the habit of touring the same Vietnamese restaurants whenever I'm in the Twin Cities The restaurant itself is an enigma since it is called "Pho 79 / Caravelle " serving both Vietnamese and Chinese dishes. I have not tried Caravelle dishes but the menu hints more traditional Cantonese family-style dishes. The Pho 79 menu is traditional Vietnamese and is fairly comprehensive from its noodle soups (dry, egg, vermicelli, pho) to clay pot dishes Ordered - Pork Egg Rolls (4/5). Crispy, crunchy, and perfect as a starter. The fish sauce at Pho 79 is a bit funky and needs to be re-examined. It reminds me of the bad experience of Trieu Chau's fish sauce - cold, potent, and mediocre - Spring Rolls (3.5/5). It was a-ok. Not the best, a bit dry and cold from what I remember. It does the job as an appetizer though - Sesame Chicken Wings (4.5/5). Very good when served hot. I'd suggest ordering and eating it on the spot. The sauce is sweet, tangy, and adds good moist to a very crispy outer coating. This is also considered one of the specialty dishes at Pho 79 - Pho 79 (4/5). Good broth in large portions. I remember sharing this with a friend and the broth was perfect with enough noodles to serve two - Com Tam Bi, Suon, Cha (3.5/5). Rice platter is okay, but not as good as Pho Tau Bay's. The grilled pork chop is the best part of the dish as the pork egg batter and funky fish sauce are disappointments - Ca Kho To (3.5/5). This is a classic family-style dish of catfish cooked in claypot with tamarind sauce. Fairly good but slightly heavy. The catfish was somewhat tender and goes well with the fluffy white rice. Do be careful of small bones Pho 79 is a decent alternative if other restaurants are busy or if you're looking to try something new. It doesn't take American Express so make sure to bring cash or have a VISA card. It is one of the OGs on Eat Street and definitely tries its best to stay relevant in the competitive Vietnamese landscape read more

I came here with a friend to grab something quick to eat. We cane around 6 pm, and we got seated right away. I decided to order cream cheese wontons as appetizers and #45; my friend ordered spring rolls and the pho special. The pho smelled amazing!!! The spring rolls was different and it was good! There was a crunchy element in the spring rolls (like a piece of eggroll wrap they fried and put it in the wrap.) it was definitely different but I liked it. When my main dish arrived, I was surprised! The dish was big and the portion looked so big! I liked the dish except for the shredded pork on the rice. I finished most of the dish. After reading about the Sesame Chicken, I had to stop in and try the combo. Well the place a little dark inside, but I ordered takeout and it arrived pretty quick. The chicken was crispy and tasted like it had a candy coating, and I ate every bit. Now the fried rice wasn't as tasty. No meat could be added, because I did ask, and was told I had to buy a full order of fried rice with meat. I just accepted it, with not much of anything in the rice. It's cool that's there's two restaurants in one setting , was kind of confused at first. Don't expect it to be nice looking restaurant, but the food was great. You must try the Sesame Chicken Wings!!!! Its crispy and whatever sauce they have on it was like a teriyaki/honey blend , crunchy and sticky. I also had the seafood hu theui which is like pho but a thicker noodle with seafood . The broth was very flavorful , and came out super hot so be careful. We all know that our mom's pho is always going to be the best because she makes it just how you like it. However, if there was any pho place that comes close to how I like my pho, it'd be Pho 79! Ever since I was a little kid, my parents and I spent our weekends either at Quang's down the street or here at Pho 79. Over the years, I've grown to like Pho 79 over all the other places. I always order the Pho Tai Bo Vien (pho with sliced beef and meatballs). Their broth is on point and their meat is always cooked perfectly. Service is quick unless you take too long to decide what you want and ask them to give you "a few more minutes" one too many times because you're busy talking to your friends, oops. The food comes out quick afterwards. The last time I was there, it took very long to pay because their system was down and they only have one cash register shared between Pho 79 and Caravelle (the restaurant connected to it). Not sure if this Pho79 is related to the one off of 280 but I will go to either one at this point. Delicious pho. I especially like that they have pho with tripe, tendon, multiple steak options, and have plenty of thai basil as an accompaniment. These things may seem basic to pho but the further you get from Mpls the less likely you are to get the real experience. Egg rolls were good but not amazing, I will still order them with every visit. Chicken wings were nicely cooked but the honey sesame glaze was too sweet for my tastes. Apparently & confusingly there are innumerable Pho 79's, from here, in Denver, & in So Cal cities Alhambra & Westminster. If ever they are closely related or aloof to one another, THIS Minneapolis eat is victorious under my palate & DL's. Almost like a naïve local I was very enticed to change my mind to instead visit Jasmine 26, which is a few blocks south of Pho 79, both in the famous Eat Street/Nicollete Ave. Thinking very carefully, I didn't let the clean décor & modern Vietnamese food at J26, based on the Yelp pix, seduce & fool the tourist me; we mulishly placed our booties down to P79's anti-fine dining décor & conservatively culinary delights. Yet to avoid confusion, from the entrance have a seat on the left portion of the building; the right side is the Chinese, odd sister of P79's named Caravelle. DL was obviously in a soupy mood to eventually give the Ribeye Pho ($8.99) a shot. If only, only, ONLY their decently hot yet not so very enriched broth was as spectacular the most tenderest (yea, I intentionally made a grammar/spelling mistake O_o), most tantalizing & most delicious rib-freakin'-eye I've EVER savored. Maybe simmer the broth more with pepper or any other critical use of herbs, & that heapin' bowl could brilliantly be 5 super stars. Same went for my BBQ Pork Vermicelli Bowl/Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio ($7.79), i.e. their average yet vital fish sauce. Nonetheless I slightly poured that sauce over such bite-friendly rice noodles, dastardly delish pork egg roll & perfectly chargrilled, moist & extremely savory pork "pieces" with zero hint to metallic undertone, & the freshest veggies I've gotten in my Bun since SD based Mignon Pho + Grill 1.5 years ago or even famed Brodard Resto in the OC. It dreadfully made me have to wait for another MN visit b/c this Bun rocked my travel bug! As for our refreshments ($3 on average) they were comforting. However, I knew it would be MUCH better if the perfectly rich Café Sua Da/Vietnamese Iced Coffee didn't have so much ice blocks to virtually occupy the entire space, or if the Taro Slush didn't have inconsistently textured boba to supposedly enjoy with the half-fake & half-real Taro--we can really taste Taro in this, yay! Though the liquid forms were unfortunately not very sweet highlights, all other ingredients averaged up, including to the one of the most honest--though shy--waitresses I've ever dealt with (she sheepishly commented that the Ribeye Pho was much better than the tempting Bun Bo Hue), to a 3.5 on this Pho 79. This is such a great spot! I've been missing super flavorful broth and I'm happy to be back in the Twin Cities to get to Pho 79. This unassuming location has some if the best Pho around. Service is friendly and prompt, ingredients are well prepared, vegetables are fresh and crisp. Although there isn't much parking, I always seem to snag a spot in their lot. My personal favorites are pho #13, spring rolls and the vermicelli salad with egg roll or meatballs. I often eat the pho there and take out the vermicelli for the next day. read more
