Honestly I went to this place only by the higher number of ratings when I looked for Vietnamese restaurants to try out a Pho. The restaurant is placed in the middle of a busy downtown building that the size of the place isn't too generous. Luckily the restaurant wasn't too busy on a Friday noon and I got served for lunch within two minutes. This is a quick eat like a Chipotle and I informed the first waitress on the line that I was there for the first time. She got excited and walked me through all the available options in the menu. Since the broth has chicken in it, I decided to pass on the Pho and instead went for a Vermicelli rice salad with veggies. One by one the waitresses in the line kept stacking different proteins and veggies to the vermicelli and made it look like an art work. Not the best I've had but it is nice to have these options in downtown Minneapolis skyways. The menu is light (pho, vermicelli, spring rolls) and the concept mirrors Chipotle as you get to see your order being made. The ingredients looked fresh and smelled flavorful and delicious. That said, I did notice very soggy noodles in the big bowl they had. Ordered - Chicken Spring Rolls (3/5). It was okay. It had all the right ingredients (+1 for the addition of pineapple strips) but it was average in taste. I was disappointed in the fish sauce as it was heavily diluted and lost its purpose whereas I think going with the peanut sauce would have been the safer bet. - Chicken Pho (2.5/5). Horrendous. The broth was lukewarm despite only taking our take out from the place to a nearby hotel (30 second walk). The soup was a little too sweet and the cubed chicken was a let down. Trust me, when I order the Pho, I have tried to eat these rice noodles in an elegant manner but have not been successful. Slurp, Slurp, Slurp pretty much sums up my Pho experience. I usually get the chicken Pho with lettuce, onions, bean sprouts, and curacha- i kept it simple. If you work in downtown Minneapolis and have a craving for Pho, Bep is the place to go. There are two locations but this is the one I frequent. It's a short walk from my office, but one must go early to avoid the crowd. I got there around 11:30am and already, lines were forming. I ordered the beef pho. The staff assembles your pho in front of you like Subway and Chipotle style. Seating is ample but again, it gets filled up fast so find a spot fast if you can. The bowls are the perfect size, and they're made of sustainable cardboard/paper? (I think). The broth was amazing! It was pretty good for a small skyway restaurant and you don't need to add anything else to it! The portion is enough to make you full but not enough to put you in food coma so I'm not worried! I skipped gym time to finally check this place out since they are only open until 3pm, and I would say it was worth it. Got into the restaurant, and there was not a long line. Service was super fast, and I got my bowl of pho quick. The restaurant is more designed for to-go because there isn't much space to dine in. You add your protein and ingredients, choose your sauce, and pay. It's all rather efficient. I wanted the tofu vermicelli bowl, but they were out of tofu, so I just tried a non-meat bowl instead. Their veggies were fresh and delicious, as was their peanut sauce. It was also a generous serving. I love LOVE this place. Aside from the populated Chinese spots here in downtown I'm so glad there's a fast and easy Vietnamese joint nearby. I've visited Bep more than 20x in the last 2 years and finally got to writing a review. Honestly, I felt like it was much much better when I stepped into Bep the first few times. However it is still my favorite go to. My favorite is the vermicelli bowl. The bowl starts with a base of the vermicelli noods, then your protein of choice. I usually go for the steak, because it's tender and I love seeing a glimpse of pink. Then you choose any topping of choice, varying from bean sprouts, pickled carrots, herbs and etc. I love the vermicelli and peanut sauce together. Before, they would squeezed the sauce into the bowl but recently it comes in a condiment container. I still prefer the squeezing sauce bottles but totally understandable about the switch up. Their second option is Pho. The pho broth is amazing. It's so flavorful that sometimes I just don't want none of the noods. Its great that this option is available because it's my go to for soups when I feel under the weather. They also make spring rolls with your choice of proteins and topping as well. Bep is one if my top three favorite eats in the skyway! You truly can't go wrong here. The rare steak pho is my personal favorite in the winter because the steak and sprouts are incredible, and it warms you up! The spring rolls are amazing, too, though. If you're in the mood for spring rolls, shrimp with extra peanut sauce is a must! I have also had their vermicelli salad which is light but filling. Depending on my preference for the day, I order all three pretty often! I have never had their banh mi, but others I've eaten with have enjoyed it. This is my second-favorite Asian restaurant in the skyway. One of the things I like most is the fact that I can order online and pickup my lunch without having to wait in the ridiculously long line. I really wanted some broth, but that would have been a riff on Pho. So, I've had the Pho more than anything else, and I really enjoy it. One of the qualities I enjoy about Asian food is that many of them have "warming" properties. The Pho here definitely does. It makes my insides feel great, as like I'm touching a part of my spirit that needed a little attention. I had the Bao with my daughter, and it was also good. We got spoiled on Bao years back by a friend from Vietnam. We used to exchange Bao for cheesecake and my Hawaiian teriyaki wings. The spring rolls are the only thing I'd not get again. They fall apart on me each and every time I've had them. If not in a pie-throwing contest, I don't like wearing my food. Besides, I've got Pad Ga-Pow for spring rolls (Yummety Yum!). This was our first time ever eating at BEP. We were on a trip to Minneapolis, and really wanted some noodles. I found BEP and it had really good reviews and the picture looked great!! When I got there, it was lunch rushour and the line was quite long outside. That's a good thing, but my stomach thought otherwise... Stood in line for a bit, but it seemed to go faster because they were quite organized. So, looks were deceiving.... I ordered online and got the Rare Beef Steak PHO and a spring roll. The black guy with frizzy hair on the sides all around his hat.... not sure if his name, sorry, but he represented great customer service!! He went over and beyond for me, and it seemed as if he treated everyone that way. I wish I knew his name. Anyways, he came through the line, asked me what my orders were, and then kept reassuring me that I was taken care of. I loved how easy it was to order from my trusty Yelp app!! I even got a discount and was able to use it!! They are reasonably priced too! They are only open from 11am-2pm and it seems a bit short, because man do they make the business. I got several different sauces and since it was to go, everything was in nice and neat containers. Looking into the restaurant, they surely could have used a bigger seating area because they make the business!!!! When I was finally able to eat, man.....it was so good!!!!! The only thing I wished was that since it's to go, somehow the broth could be placed in something where it stays boiling hot, because my rice noodles were a bit underdone, and my hotel was just around the corner so it's not like I had to travel a long way. The flavors were spot on, and adding my peanut sauce. Sriracha, and a bit of hoisin to the mix....I was in noodle heaven!!!! Note to self: check this place out the next time you are downtown. Today was that day. Got there close to two so the line was non-existent when I got there. I imagine they could get crowded during the lunch hour as they did have the rope queue set up, but I can't imagine it gets anywhere near as bad as Chipotle or Naf Naf Grill in the US Bank building which are more on the main thoroughfare of downtown foot traffic. Think there were three basic options on the menu: Vermicelli Noodle Bowl, Pho, or Spring Rolls. I opted for the Vermicelli Noodle Bowl. Choose your protein, choose your toppings, and choose your sauce. I went with Grilled Chicken, peanuts, carrots, lettuce and the chili sauce. Just shy of nine bucks. Worth every penny. Left with my stomach full and my taste buds happy. Good value for the money. It is nice to see that some other types of cuisine are getting in on the Chipotle format. Cuisine that you would normally have to sit down and waste time with waiter service for instead made quick and easy. Was it the best Vietnamese food I have ever had? Probably not. Would I go back? Special review for Pho - The pho was very flavorful and fulfilling. I got the steak and it was fun to watch the raw meat being cook by the hot broth. It comes in a paper bowl with a stable lid so you can have it to go. The place is really small with a few tables which only fit 2 people per table. Yay! Been waiting for a Vietnamese place to pop up in downtown Minneapolis forever! If you want fresh ingredients and a quick lunch this is the place to go. Concept mirrors Vietnamese street food so quick and fast food but so not like American fast food! You start off by choosing what kind of dish you want: Banh Mi, Vermicelli noodle salad, or spring rolls (3); then meat choices are grilled chicken, grilled pork (my fave), garlic shrimp (extra charge), or tofu and then lastly choose your toppings and sauces. Oh and cannot forget pho!! Choice of chicken or beef. my favorite so far is the grilled pork vermicelli noodle salad topped with lettuce, cucumber, pineapple, jalapeños and the fish sauce. Don't forget to pick up some sriracha for spice and lime for some citrus! Great concept! I do wish there was more seating, very small area, if you go during the busy lunch hour you will most likely be taking it to go and back to the office. I'm Asian and have grown up eating Asian food (Thai, Lao, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Indian)...Also I've had it internationally (Thailand, Hong Kong, Europe) as well as across the US in cities known for their culinary scene (LA, New York, Chicago, Dallas, Houston). The service is great and the staff is nice, but the food is almost flavor-less. I came here with my cousin who was craving a banh mi sandwich. I got the vermicelli bowl with chicken as well as some shrimp spring rolls. My dish is designed to be lightly flavored to begin with but the sauces (I got a different one for each; a brownish one and an orange one) that accompanied both the bowl and the spring rolls really did not bring anything to the dishes. The chicken was definitely not marinated (preparation wasn't there in the flavor) and the flavor itself was way too light to carry the dish. Very similar for the shrimp spring rolls. My cousin agreed when she tried them... :( I really feel if they got better sauces and enhanced their preparation they could be more authentic and more flavorful. The line was out the door of the small Vietnamese Chipotle like Pho/Spring Roll/Noodle/Pho shop that has been written up all over the Twin Cities periodicals. The service was amazing at each of the 3 stations I stopped at. I ordered the chicken Banh Mi on a nice and crispy baguette roll with all the fixings and they added some chopped peanuts and some hot chili peanut sauce. The guys behind the counter were super cool and the portion was pretty large. I brought it back to the office and it was good, but I would of liked a toasted bun, because it was kind of cold. I heated it up in the microwave and just screwed everything up. The bread got soggy, but the chicken and fixings were really good. I felt like the portions were great, the flavors were on point, and I was able to add only the ingredients that I wanted! The meat was delicious, tender and not overly cooked, and the "Vietnamese vinaigrette" (which was basically just nuoc mam) was just right for me, though I could see it being a bit bland for others. They had a good variety of sauces so there's something for just about everyone! I'm a little iffy about the other menu items as I'm picky with my pho so the fast-food, build-your-own thing scares me a little and my coworker who ordered the banh mi said the bread was a little too hard. In skyway...quick service and fresh! Love the Bahn Mi. Beautifully crispy roll with fresh toppings. If you come during the lunch hour do not be surprised to find a line, but no worries the line moves right along. This is a fresh fast food concept and it totally works! I'm pretty pumped to have a quality Vietnamese skyway restaurant close to my work. I didn't have too high of expectations since I figured there was no way it could measure up to any of the University Ave joints I frequent. But... This place looks like a winner to me. I had the beef pho with all the recommended fixings including a healthy handful of jalapeños and a drizzle of sriracha. I was expecting a bland luke warm broth but it was piping hot with great spice character that definitely measures up. Other things I like: - No Styrofoam used - Finally a restaurant in the 100 S. Fifth St. Tower - Minimal yet very nice looking decor w/ 5 or so tables - Can't beat the price for a perfect lunch size bowl of pho. I'll be coming back to try the banh mi and the spring rolls soon! read more
