    Pho

Was in the mood for Banh Mi and checked their website which listed Banh Mi as an option so walked over there for lunch. Found out after getting there that they don't actually serve Banh Mi anymore so settled for their Pho with grilled chicken. This was a good bowl of pho. All the normal fixings for pho are available and it is a tasty bowl of pho. The grilled chicken was a little different than what I am used to but flavorful. It's a small place but fairly open and well lit. The staff is friendly and the service was good. A decent place if you are in the mood for some pho.

Stopped by for lunch while working downtown. While it's not the most authentic viet food around, it's quick and you can customize what you want. I got the vermicelli bowl and added most of the toppings to it. For protein I got the pork and it said it was marinated but I could barely taste it. The service was fast and the staff was super friendly. Overall, it's good if you are looking for something quick and wanted viet inspired flavors.

I should preface this review by saying that I think Bep deserves 5 stars relative to all of the other lunchtime options in the Skyway in downtown Minneapolis. While there are certainly restaurants elsewhere in the city that would get a better overall review from me, I think that Bep is one of the best, if not the absolute best, places for lunch in the downtown core. Here's why: 1) The pho: there are a surprising number of pho restaurants in Downtown MPLS, but Bep certainly has the best of them all. The beef broth is almost perfect: rich, smooth, and perfectly spiced without being too heavy or too salty. The toppings are also very good: the meat is good quality, the veggies plentiful and fresh, and the portions huge. The temperature is also just right: the broth is kept very hot and added at the absolute last minute, meaning your pho will "cook" the meat and veggies quickly, and still be nice and warm when you eat it. 2) The noodle bowls: slightly smaller than the pho, but still really good. I particularly like the pork with spicy peanut sauce, but there are an endless number of ways to customize your bowl for your taste! 3) The Banh Mi: wonderful bread and great toppings. Takes me back to Laos (I've never been to Vietnam, but the sandwiches in Laos are very similar to Vietnam). The one thing they are missing is the paté. Also, be careful, as the banh mi sauce has dairy in it, so if you can't have milk like me, ask them to sub a different sauce for it. 4) Fast and friendly service: even during the lunch rush, when there's often a line out the door, you can be in and out with your food in about 15 minutes. The one issue here is that it's so popular, there often isn't a place to sit right away if you come between 12:15 and 1pm. However, there is quick turnaround, and seats open up fairly fast. I believe they also have a second location downtown, but I'm not sure where it is. Enjoy!

This is their new/2nd location serving the west downtown crowd. Love this closer spot since I no longer have to walk all the way to 5th st (original location) especially during the short lunch hour. Interior - The store is much larger with a more modern layout. Very easy to grab a table/seat unlike the smaller 5th st location. Marble tables for the win! Bep always draws a large crowd so it's no surprise they are quite busy! Menu and ordering process is fairly simple - build your own meal concept. Pho, banh mi, spring rolls, vermicelli bowl all under $7.95! Highly recommend getting the rare steak pho! Portion size and meal size is perfect for a quick lunch fill up. I'll have to come back to try out the fresh pressed sugarcane juice and bao buns! Sounds very enticing!

If you're in the mood for spring rolls, Bep is a must! I love the shrimp spring rolls here. They are so fresh and so flavorful! I get my spring rolls with all the toppings except pineapple (I generally don't like to include fruit in savory food) and I always opt for the jalapenos, too, so my rolls have a little kick. In addition to all the toppings, I also get all three sauces. They are too good to choose just one! The peanut chili dressing is a thicker sauce whereas the Vietnamese vinaigrette and citrus soy sauce are both lighter. By getting all the sauces, some bites are sweet, some are tangy, some are smooth and some are spicy--so much variety in one order of spring rolls! They also keep the shrimp whole as opposed to slicing it in half lengthwise which so often happens with spring rolls. The environment is bright and clean. It feels industrial and comfy at the same time. The restaurant is run like a Chipotle, but instead of Mexican food, you choose from spring rolls, pho, bahn mi and vermicelli salad. You select your type of dish, then pick your protein, your toppings and your sauce--completely customizable! It's a skyway restaurant so it gets busy at lunch time with the business crowd. As you can see in one of my pictures, the line was out the door at 11:50am on a Friday. Fortunately, the line moves quickly. Now, for the not as positive part--in the past, I have tried the pho here. As a big fan of pho, I was excited to try it, but it fell far short of expectations. I found the broth to be on the bland side and the meat was overcooked by the time I sat down to eat it. I opted for the rare steak but after a short walk back to my office to enjoy, the steak was not only cooked through, but it was overdone. I didn't even finish eating it.

Picture this: out of state girl, in the rain, and her GPS is telling her to get delicious pho a solid 4 blocks away... No bueno. Go inside the La Salle building, up to the second floor by the skyway to find this place. But it's so, so good!!! And the service was WONDERFUL! I've done food service myself, so I know how frustrating it can be to have someone come in and order 90 seconds before the store closes - so I'm so, so grateful for them!! This was great! 5/5!

Note: Writing Review from perspective of being a new vegan and having to try out all my favorite restaurants with a new lens. Ordered: Tofu Spring Rolls Tip: Not a place for a quick skyway lunch. Expect long lines. However, you can order ahead. Pros: Tofu is soft and flavorful. Spring rolls are made to order. Cons: Few Vegan options :-( . Place is known for Pho soup and could easily be vegan friendly if they added a vegetable broth option. If craving pho, go to Quangs! But doesn't help u of you want a skyway option.

Great lunch spot with tons of seating. The line was long but I got through it in about 5 minutes. I ordered the pho with chicken (with all of the toppings + hoisin and sriracha sauces). Let me tell ya, it was awesome!! Full of great flavor and just the right amount of spice with the jalapeños and sriracha. The spring rolls looked great as well, so I definitely want to try those at some point too. My only complaint is their hours. They're only open for lunch; and as someone who frequently works through dinner, I would love to have made this one of my go-to dinner spots!

They have a lot out front, which is super nice parking-wise. We didn't make a reservation and came in for lunch on a Sunday. We were seated right away and our waitress was kind throughout. She made really great suggestions when we asked our specific questions and I was so glad I took her advice of what weekend special to order. I got the bun rieu (crab and pork noodle soup) Sunday special, my mom got the grilled beef noodle salad, and my sister got the vegetarian egg roll noodle salad. I have a bit of a cream cheese wonton addiction so I added those on last minute as well. Wow am I glad I did. These were the best wontons I've had in a really long time. Something about the dough of them made them have a slight chew to them and both my sister and I agreed we were so glad we got them. Everything else was phenomenal too. The bun rieu Sunday special warms your soul and if you like seafood type flavors with a beautiful tomato broth, you will absolutely love this. The salads were both delicious in their own right-shout out to both the beef and the veg egg rolls. The best part was how much extra food we ended up with-lots of leftovers for a future meal. We all agreed we would come back in a heartbeat. Highly highly recommend.

Well thinking I would go to Pho Hua instead, I pulled intonthe Shuang Hur Grocer's parking lot thinking I'd grab a few things before heading north on Eat Street. Then I saw signs on the Shuang Hur building for a (new to me) Vietnamese joint in the same building. Boy was I pleasantly surprised! My Huong is an 8-top hole in the wall across the parking lot from the rear of El Nuevo Mariachi Restaurant. The place is homely, small, but brightly lit and plenty of day light through the picture windows overlooking Eat Street. It's a big contrast to Pho 79 type places that are dim and short on ambience. The clientele shows. Instead of just a bunch of Asians throwing down Pho, it's a mix like you'd see at Quang or Eat Street Crossing. I was seated right away, was greeted by a cheery Vietnamese lady, and ordered Hu Tieu Bo Khu (Beef Stew Noodle Soup.) It was a dish I haven't seen before even though I have been to so many Vietnamese places (see my other reviews and lists.) The dish came very quickly, and I was shocked that they didn't bring it with a veggie plate. Oh well. Well the best way I could describe Hu Tieu Bo Khu, its basically a pot roast over noodles. So the beefy broth like a less spicey version of Bun Bo Hue, with flavors of lemongrass and star anise, nicely garnished already with what would have been on a veggie plate. The broth was delicious, slightly sweet with the carrots, and the beef was fall apart amazingly stewed with deep flavor. There were other menu items like Curry Chicken pho and a Stewed chicken rice dish I'd have to return and try!

Southeast Asian food is where the Minneapolis food scene really shines, and Gai Noi did not disappoint. We were having a leisurely weekend day, so dropped by the restaurant around 4:30 in the afternoon for a late lunch/early dinner (lunner?). This worked out well in our favor, because we were seated right away, without the customary wait at peak hours, because this place does not take reservations. The restaurant interior is very interesting and is divided in multiple areas which almost feel like different restaurants. We were originally seated in a dark cozy corner, but noticed there was a beautiful sunroom on the second floor which was not yet full, and thankfully, were able to transfer over there for a more beautiful sunlit dining experience (so definitely ask!). We ordered drinks (my friend a cocktail, and me a Thai tea), a rice dish with minced chicken and an egg, a noodle soup dish, salmon skewer, and an eggplant sauce which came with sticky rice as a side. Everything was well made and delicious, although the fish sauce and lemongrass were quite overpowering in the noodle dish for us, and we did not finish it. The rice dish is our absolute favorite (my friend's standing order). The salmon skewer was well cooked, but in my opinion, the skewer flavors probably went better with other meat options, and overall was nothing to write home about. The eggplant sauce portion was very small, which we were initially very perplexed by, but it turned out to be very flavorful and spicy (in a good way), that the portion size turned out to be perfect, not to mention a pair perfectly with the sticky rice it came with in a very cute bamboo container. Our server told us to think of it like a salsa we could add to everything, and it was perfect. Overall, excellent experience although some food items were clearly better than others. (This is of course a preference thing. We saw Penang spaghetti was very popular amongst the other guests, but my friend did not like that at all the last time she was here.) Our bill came out to about $50 per person, which seemed reasonable for the experience. (Something like Hot Grainz in my mind is a similar type of cuisine, at a more affordable price). Will be back! Street parking (we were luckily able to snag a place right in front of the restaurant). I think coming during off peak is definitely a great idea if you can be flexible.
