1st time customer. Visited on a Sunday around 3p. Not busy at all just a couple family with kids. I ordered pork vermicelli and ask that the pork be cooked crispy. They did not disappoint! Pho 45 really stands out for their wonderful noodle soups. The interior is your typical hole in the wall Vietnamese noodle house. Despite the menu, there's a lot of paper sheet post ups of their offerings all over the restaurants, a little tacky and distracting but very common in these places. Pass on the banh mi here. They chunky carrots were not to my liking. Pass on the spring rolls. They are also subpar. The spring rolls are lacking in mint, filled with iceberg lettuce, and loosely rolled. They didn't have that nice sticky freshness to the wrapper either. Pho 45 does noodle soup right. The broths have a deep complexity that is hard to find at some noodle houses. On my last visit here, the spicy bun bo hue lit my mouth fire. They don't kid around with the spices. That's a good thing though. My favorite dish here, the bun rieu is magical. It's a crabby noodle soup with tofu and blood jello. They added snails into it, which I did not request, but they tasted just fine. Don't forget to add the shrimp paste. One strange thing about Pho 45 is the consistency of the soups. Sometimes they leave stuff out like the blood jello in the bun bo hue, other times they add extras like above with the snails. Pho was ok even though barely any meat. Ordered on Uber eats and the packaging was horrible I was literally laughing. Some of my pho was spilled into the bag. They put it in a cup and plastic wrap it somehow that's supposed to keep it safe I guess. Now the Vietnamese egg rolls were disgusting, so oily that it was soaking thru the brown paper bag. Oil taste overwhelmed the egg rolls had to throw them in the trash. Literally blindly pick any other pho place and you'll get better food. read more

Humble digs, food cheap and good. Everything was fresh and prepared with care. I was particularly happy with banh mi hot ga opla (fried egg baguette). It was simple: two fried eggs on one plate and a baguette on the other. You put them together yourself! This is extremely necessary because the egg is fried crispy golden but the yolk runs freely all over the baguette, and if the chef had put them together for you you would have missed all the fun and freshness. And I t is delicious! The baguette had that lovely hot bread smell and like the eggs, had the crispy/softy texture balance. I added some sriracha, and it was a wonderful combo. I also had the ban bo hue (hot beef vermicelli). Wasn't sure what I was getting into. Not used to this kind of meat and I wished I'd ordered the bun tai instead because the texture was a bit wild. But the broth, noodles, and fresh greens to top off were delicious and fresh. Could drink just the hot, flavorful broth every single day and be a happy camper. Nuoc mat atiso (sweet artichoke tea) to drink. That was tasty. Just a sweetened tea made of artichoke, with some kind of floating seed that forms a jelly pearl when added to liquid, probably chia. I probably won't order it again because I have my favorites, but it was refreshing and tasty, and a nice change-up. Overall, great meal, great price. read more

I'm really wondering how this place has anything higher than 2 stars (and even then I feel that's being generous). The place is quaint and not necessarily dirty. The staff are pretty typical, don't expect to get many refills (again, typical to authentic Pho places so it's not a problem). The problem with this place is that their food is pretty bad and pretty unauthentic. Their Thit Nuong (grilled pork) was most likely just done on a pan, there's no charring, there's no lemongrass (the best thing about authentic Thit Nuong), and hardly any seasoning except maybe sugar. The worst part is their Pho (kind of ironic considering it's in the name). The broth is completely unauthentic and tastes like they just purchased some flavoring packets from a store and used that as broth, you can't taste or smell any star anise or beef even. Worse since I'll is that the amount of pho you get is very little, a large here is the same as a small at most other places. Again, no clue how this place has above a 2 when right across the street is Pho Dung 3, a place that also isn't great, but it certainly tastes better than this place and the value is better too. Honestly it's your choice to spend about a dollar or so more for a superior product that's still within the correct price range (around 8 for a large bowl, 7 for a small), or pinch your pennies here and get something that only resembles Vietnamese food. read more

Shabby strip center establishments carry a lot of cachet when it comes to Vietnamese restaurants, usually because the mom and pop proprietors are running the places themselves, which in turn is the hallmark of authenticity. Pho 45 however is housed in a newish center on 249, and the interior is clean and brightly lit, but you can still see the family ties as the proprietors bustle about the busy dining room. And busy it is during the lunch hour, because regardless of how new it is, Pho 45 has quite a following. My first time there, patrons came streaming steadily in, 95% of whom were Vietnamese, which was an immediate vote of confidence. As the name suggests, there are more than a dozen Pho options, from the straightforward, most of which employ eye round steak (Pho Tai), to the complex combinations (Dac Biet) of flank, brisket, tripe, and tendon. I should know my Pho portions by now, but nevertheless since the small was only $5.49, I thought I could afford a Banh Mi sandwich to go along with it for only $2.75. My wallet had room, but my stomach did not. Almost. I chose a fairly simple soup of eye round steak and fatty brisket (Pho Tai, Gau), but simple it was not. I could smell the seasonings as the un-small bowl was brought to my table full of dark, rich, complex broth. The vermicelli was soft and the fresh cilantro and basil were aromatic, but the steak and brisket were out of this world. I venture to use an adjective much loved, though overused, by Anthony Bourdain - the flavors were ephemeral. If I thought too hard about what I was tasting, the fleeting harmony of seasonings were gone. It was like trying to eff the ineffable. About halfway through my soup, I was brought a perfectly golden brown baguette, soft on the inside, stuffed with fresh cucumber, carrot, cilantro, and jalapeño, along with some exquisite BBQ pork (Banh Mi Thit Nuong). I was no less impressed with the chargrilled pork with a tangy glaze, and battled an internal desire to return to the soup. With all of the above for around $9, I waddled out smiling contentedly. But Pho is not the only thing on offer at Pho 45: they also have a number of rice (Com) and vermicelli (Bun) options, special dishes, and quite an array of drinks, including Vietnamese iced coffee, tea, lemonade, and milk. I often go for the chargrilled pork rice dish, but I was sold on one that also had shredded roast pork and pork skin with a fried egg on top (Com Bi Thit Nuong Trung). I'm sure you could get a fried egg on any of the dishes, or the sandwiches, if you asked them, but I just stuck to the menu. The BBQ pork was just as delicious as it had been on the sandwich, the roast pork was savory and tender, though I didn't go for too much of the fatty pork skin. I thought it would perhaps have been fried and crisp, but it was soft and I used a few pieces to add a rich, fatty flavor to the other pork. As the egg yolk broke and oozed into the rice and pork, this was an exceptional lunch for only $7 and change. I know there are a lot of places I still need to try, but this is my first 5-star Vietnamese review. The elegant interior and attentive staff added that elusive element. From now on when I start to get hungry around mid day, I'll just look at my watch and see that it's about Pho 45. read more

I grabbed takeout for my parents and myself here yesterday afternoon. I called in my order from work without a menu. The woman who answered the phone didn't really speak English, which is a hallmark of most delicious pho restaurants, so I really shouldn't have been surprised. I ended up ordering three combination pho and spring rolls. I had a 20 minute drive over to my parents' house and the aroma of the soup slowly filled my car. The air became a delectable combination of beef, lemongrass, and fish sauce. My mouth was watering and my appetite whetted by the time I got to their place. They did a great job wrapping up the tops of the soup containers and even sealed the tops to make sure they would withstand the inevitable jostling of Houston traffic. The noodles were packaged with a generous helping of finely chopped cilantro and plenty of bean sprouts, basil, and jalapenos. They even packaged a small container of hoisin/sriracha. The broth itself is more similar to the Chinese beef noodle soup (ngo lam) than a traditional pho broth. The salty, meaty broth is infused with star anise, sugar, fish sauce and possibly cinnamon. The broth was sweet and dark. It is delicious in it's own right, but different from the expected clear, lemongrass broth I'm used to. Despite having a strong lemongrass aroma, the flavor was missing most likely masked in the broth by the heavy hand of beef. The cuts of meat included in the combination pho were of better quality than I've found in many other pho restaurants. The brisket was tender and felt apart in just the right way. The meatballs and tendon were delicious; however, they were pretty sparse. Strangely, the more expensive brisket seemed to dominate the majority of the meat found in this dish. I was conflicted because I personally love tendon and meatballs, but I know others don't share my opinion. The spring rolls were similar to ones that I've made at home with friends, but I don't think you can really expect anything mind-blowing about spring rolls. They were good nonetheless and the accompanying hoisin/peanut sauce mixture was alright. The price is right for the amount of food, the quality, and the big flavors. I have been coming to this restaurant for a couple of years. It was close to my job on North Houston Rosslyn and just a nice quiet atmosphere for lunch. I brought many co-workers to the restaurant and up until today had a great experiences. Today, I met up with a friend of mine that is still at my previous job location for lunch. We order the Vietnamese Egg Rolls, Iced tea, I ordered pho, and she ordered the vermicelli. When we got the second round of tea, I noticed a roach in my drink. We let the waitress know, and she took the glass. We waited for a while until I finally asked what are we going to do about this? They did not excuse the bill and only wanted to take the drinks off of the final bill. Keep in mind, we had not finished our food, not even half way done. It was at this time that we noticed two bottles of Hot Shot Roach Spray in the corner and roach baits under the refrigerator. I paid the bill of roughly 27 USD. But have gotten in contact with the Health Department, the local News, and newspaper. It really hurts to see such bad customer service. I have known the owner in conversation, they recently went to Vietnam in February of 2015, and have even spoken with a young waitress, I think the daughter, that attends U of H. And to get this reaction.... I have also posted this on my Facebook page and Instagram. I will not recommend this restaurant and I hope that this issue gets addressed by the Department of Environmental Health Services. The only thing clean in this location is the sign! read more

The authentic flavors in their dishes will leave you disappointed when you get to the bottom of your plate or bowl. The staff speaks little English, so it can be hard to communicate your order or ask questions. But the portions are plentiful, the prices are good, and the food is full of Vietnamese flavor! I wanted to try some places around this area and have always driven by Pho 45. I decided to give it a try after looking at the reviews on yelp. I was craving for some buon rieu and this place popped up. I was surprised by the interior decor. From the outside, i could tell it was small, but I didn't know it would look so homey and neat on the inside. The service was great! The lady that took my order was very sweet and polite. I think she might be the owner, but I'm not sure. I waited patiently for my food. EGGROLLS One dish comes with 2 eggrolls. These weren't good and they didn't taste very fresh. The meat inside had a funny taste to it and I couldn't even eat it. They gave like 2 cabbages and the plate just looked empty. BUON RIEU I was disappointed when i ate this. It had a sweet taste and was watery. The flavor just wasn't there and was flat. I thought it would be savory or at least have some salt, but it was just flat. PHO DAC BIET The pho was lacking in flavor as well. The seasoning just wasn't there and the soup was flat. The meat didn't taste fresh and had an oily greasy hue to it. This place has a big following because they have been around for awhile. They used to be located about 5 min down the street but they recently moved to a newer location (much nicer than the old one!). I used to have a business in the same shopping center as their new location and I notice the traffic for breakfast and lunch is very steady here. I am not a huge fan of their rice dishes, they are shiesty on portions (as you can see I'm very picky about portions on all of my reviews). Their pho is good, the broth is darker than most places but I like it. BUT there is a big drawback about this places pho...if you are sensitive to MSG do not eat the pho, its loaded with it. I have 3 people in my family that get body aches from eating dishes with too much MSG and this place is one of them that triggers it for them. Spring rolls are the same as any other pho place. Fiancé and I came here since we wanted to try new place. Prices of this place is not bad, but he food is. There is not a lot of options also. We tried Bun Bo hue and Bun Rieu. They were watery and full of artificial and paste taste, not the pure soup taste you get for food made from scratch, or partially made from real spice and ingredients, not a can soup or soup paste jar. The service is ok, the lady did not really understand English, but at least she smiles and answered with totally off topic lmao. This is definitely one of the best Vietnamese restaurants I've been to in a while. It's fairly cramped, but overall good. So far I've only tried the pho for my main dish, but I absolutely loved it. It's very flavorful and cheap. I went there with a friend, we got two bowls of pho, a Vietnamese bbq pork sandwich, and an order of spring rolls all for about $20. I will definitely be back. This is one of the cleaner places I've been to lately. That's a rare find considering these small strip center restuarants tend to always end up grossing me out. I seem to always find nats or hair in my pho at other various pho places :\ Hopefully this place doesn't end up the same way, but so far, so good! read more

Went in this past Friday for lunch. Small place nice and quaint. I ordered PHo, one of the appetizer sandwiches and the Vietnamese spring roles. The sandwich was very good. The bun was fresh and I loved the sauce that was on the pork. The spring roles were crispy and served with a sauce that went very well with them. I ate the pho that night and it was also very good.
