One of the better Philly steak places in southern California in my opinion. I prefer a rather simple cheesesteak but they have a variety of sandwiches, including all the traditional variations of the Philly steak sandwiches. They also offer meats other than steak and have a nice selection of fresh subs (like Italian). The cheesesteak fries are loaded with goodness if you aren't counting your calories! Plenty of locations across the southland and usually fairly easy to find seating unless you just hit the busiest part of the lunch hour. read more

Everyone's always raving about this place so I figured I would finally give it a shot. I had the Phillys Best with provolone and my bf had it with cheese whiz. Both cheesesteaks were really dry, the meat was way too over cooked, it came out super chewy and ended up losing all the flavor. The cheese on my cheesesteak was nonexistent, which is odd considering that it is a cheesesteak. Johns Philly Grille is usually our number one spot but we wanted to see if there was a place near by that was just as good. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. The model upon which all cheesesteak eateries outside of the Delaware Valley should be based. Funny things is, there is now a whole chain of places based on this place, but the franchises lack the space and atmosphere of this location. The Irvine Philly's Best certainly plays to the base, offering all sorts of side items and drinks that can't be found elsewhere. The rolls, of course, come from Amoroso's: not the best roll to be had in Philly, but certainly the best mass-produced, preservative-laden roll capable of making the trip out west. This sandwich is made in the style most common in small neighborhood corner shops throughout metro Philly. My only real complaint is that their "Philly's Best" sandwich is some sort of unholy nonsense with mushrooms and peppers. Throw in some swiss cheese and put that shit on the menu at TGI Fridays. They should understand that they are shepherds leading the blind and it's unfair to lead them away from the minimalist bliss of steak, onions and cheese. If you don't know already, be sure to skip the fountain drinks and go for a Frank's soda or a birch beer. read more

I had high hopes for this place after reading the reviews on yelp, however, Philly's Best was more like Philly's Mediocre. I did a phone order for takeout instead of dine-in. When I got there to pay for my order, the cashier tells they're a cash-only spot and that there's an ATM around the corner. WTF? This place has like a dozen locations and they still don't accept credit cards. Since I still wanted to try the food, I did a withdrawal and paid in cash. The Food: I saw good reviews for the Philly's Best cheesesteak so I decided to go with that. The peppers were sweet, but the combination of grilled steak, onions and cheese did not blend well. I ended up removing the peppers which tasted okay after doing so. Nothing impressive about it though. My wife ordered the Meatball cheesesteak, which tasted fine as long as you weren't biting into the middle of the meatball. The middle lacked a lot of flavor, most likely because they were fairly large. I also ordered cheese fries, expecting it to be in a box with melted cheese and other ingredients included. What I got was a bag of fries like you get at any fast food spot, which were cold and unsalted, with two plastic containers of bland cheese wiz for dipping purposes I assume. My wife phrased it as "yellow goop" with no flavor at all. I think maybe the customer is supposed to add their own salt to the fries AND the cheese. Very disappointing. So if you want mediocre food and have cash on you, come to this place. Personally, I'd rather hit up Jack in the Box. read more

6 years ago was my last visit... boy how things change when ownership stops giving a crap about quality and service and instead resorts to sneaky tricks to save a few pennies. gone are the big sandwiches, clean and bright eating environment and customer service. in are much smaller sandwiches, canned ingredients and people cooking your food that you wouldn't trust handling edibles. no smiles... just chatter in Spanish making you feel like you did something wrong or asked the wrong question. we got home and opened the bags of food. I was disappointed to see a small thin sandwich that seemed more like an appetizer than a meal. for $23 for 2 sandwiches and two oily orders of fries I would have rather gone to a sit down place and at least wasted my money on something more deserving. safe to say will not go back here again. read more

I just got my very tasty lunch here. I liked this place from a to z. Although Im not a "burger" person, this was the best burger I have had during 3-4 years. Fist of all. Customer service was just perfect. These guys were working as a family, they were fast and careful. Second, the way they listened to me and gave me the best combination of this burger. It was delicious and juicy. The meat quality I think is pretty high, which is very important for me. Thirdly, Interior space was designed thoughtful, American 60's style tables and chairs with Philadelphia's mood as a pictures and decors. There are exterior seats as well. Ordered their standard cheese steak sandwich. Good portion of steak, cheese, grilled peppers and onions, and was tasty. Would otherwise give a 5 star, but when I was munching on my sandwich at 2:30 pm, place was not busy, so 2 cooks went on break in the customer seating area. I see one cook reach into the pickle/pepper bar with his bare hand, pick out a pickle and put it in his mouth. He did not use the tongs. The only place I used to go to in this plaza was Pho Bac located a few doors down from Philly's Best. Little did I know, there was this little gem hidden away! I love the decor and atmosphere of Philly's Best. It's casual, socially inviting, and definitely full of Philly pride. I ordered the Philly's Best with onions and it cost a little over $6. I'm no expert on cheesesteaks, but this was delicious. Sinfully delicious. The bread was a soft yet chewy consistency, the cheese was melted perfection, and I am a huge fan of the peppers they used. I ordered this to-go and I was planning on eating only half, but after much walking back-and-forth from the kitchen table I ended up eating the whole darn thing. It was too good to resist. Wayyyy back when I lived on the east-coast (Virginia / DC) I would sometimes make a trek all the way up to Philly to eat at this 1 particular cheesesteak joint right outside of UPENN campus (can't really remember the name now) and it was da bomb and I do mean NUCLEAR. [Fast forward x amount of years] Since I live in Cali now, I obviously can't make a simple trek to Philly to fill my cheesesteak needs so I turn to the next best thing - Philly's Best! This place is pretty authentic, well as authentic as you can get by Cali standards, they import real Philly bread and they even sell TastyKakes!!! GAWD I missed TASTYKAKES and the decor is SO Philly. Thank GAWD for Philly's best... it's like a ray of east-coast edgy blue collar sunshine in this mostly plastic, perfect Cali world... well perfect if you avoid the rough areas - oh! I've never been to Philadelphia, so I'm not sure what an "authentic" philly cheesesteak should taste like, but I do know that this stuff is delicious. i've had cheesesteaks elsewhere and none compare... as far as I know, this is the best place to get this kind of food in the irvine/orange county area. I always get the Philly's Best because I like the mushrooms and everything on it. The portions are pretty large since I can barely finish one sandwich - and on many occasions I've only eaten half for lunch and left the rest for dinner. I haven't had anything else on their menu but the philly cheesesteaks (I'm not even sure if there is anything else), but the way I see it, if that's what the specialize in, that's what I'm gonna buy. I wouldn't buy an louis vuitton watch or a fossil wallet, so yeah. The only downside is that the prices are a bit on the high side for a casual place, but if i'm craving it, it's totally worth it. read more

This review is just for the catering. So, one day my bf says "I wanna have a party." At first I was scared, but when he said he wanted an "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" viewing party, I was extremely relieved. And what better way to feed other Philly fans than with Philly Cheesesteaks? I had never had Philly's Best, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I've had Philly cheesesteak before at school (my then-bf worked at one of those chains) and wasn't impressed with the dry, paper-thin "beef" and even drier bread. But Philly's Best really does live up to its name (I'm assuming, since I've never actually been to Philly... cue Fresh Prince theme), or at least it exceeded my expectations. The meat is tender and not dry at all. It's also not overly greasy, which is the opposite of what you'd expect. And the bread... I'm not a carboholic, but the bread might turn me into one! It's soft and just the perfect texture. We still have about 4 loaves left (the party was this past Saturday), and it's still as good as it was on day one! The downside were the pickles. We got two kinds - dill and kosher. I tried one kind and I swear my tongue was gonna wither and fall off. Luckily it didn't. The sandwiches are delish on their own, so our fridge is packed with pickles still. We still have the warming tray and tongs, so a return trip to Philly's Best is imminent. It's a definite must try and completes the "Philly" experience. read more

While I've been to Pennsylvania a few times, I've never had an authentic cheesesteak there. I can't compare this place to a real Philly eatery, but I can compare it to the crappy Cali knock-offs. I had the Philly's Best cheesesteak (sweet peppers and mushrooms) and it was SUPER good. i mean, the bread was so soft and delicious! Steve said that Philly cheesesteaks (uhm, from Philly) are bigger and cheesier (therefore, yummier) but since I have never had a real one, I can say that this is the best cheesesteak I've ever had. I didn't actually go into the restaurant, but Steve told me that they have all kinds of Tastykakes and he brought me home some Wise chips. I don't know why, but Wise chips are so tasty. They have the best chicken cheesesteak I've had in southern California. The chicken is very juicy, and they don't skimp on the toppings (mushrooms, onions and cheese are what I go for). You can get your sandwich without the bread (in a little metal container) for $1 less if you're not manwich hungry. They'll also make it with lettuce and tomato if you want. I think the cheese fries are better than the onion rings, but that's just my opinion. They have a fountain soda machine so you can get refills galore, and there are lots of televisions to watch the game or whatever happens to be on. Best to arrive a bit before noon or between the lunch rush and when local schools get out or there'll be a line, but don't worry, it moves pretty fast. read more
