Visiting John's Philly Grille never fails to hit the spot. The fries are always super fresh as are the sandwiches. It's overstuffed with meat and perfectly melted cheese with grilled onions. I am glad I don't live too close there because I would go there all the time and die from a heart attack!! It's no health food but something I enjoy very VERY MUCH. Also.....there's free parking right outside the shop and outside seats to gobble down the yummy piles of food right there and then. The service is quick and efficient. Hardly any waiting needed although placing the order ahead of time helps. Just go to their website and submit the order about 10 minutes prior to arrival.

Almost burnt down my entire mouth. Staffs are nice and gets the job done in a timely manner! Outdoor seating only so be prepped for that. Haven't been to Philly but this is the best I've ever had so far. I'm afraid to try the famous joints in Philly because I feel like I will be disappointed there...

The best spot in OC for a cheesesteak! The sandwiches here are huge and a half size portion will fill you up. They also have hoagies and plenty of sides to go along with your sandwich. This place has a very casual vibe and it's a well-known local spot and they give you generous amounts of meat in your sandwich nestled in soft bread. My go to is the green pepper cheesesteak and they load it with peppers and onions. They bring out your food fast and they also have tables right there so you can sit and enjoy your food. The staff keep the tables clean and will happily take your order at the counter. If you are a fan of cheesesteaks, you have to drop by when you are in the area!

Hella good. Definitely not beating the prices anywhere. Local. Never gets old. Make sure you add the hot chillies.

They don't go shy on the portions, as when I ate, I had stuff falling out with every bite. The customer service is always exceptional. I tried visiting on a Monday, but they were closed. This time, I stopped by on a Wednesday early evening after the gym. The young man at the window was very helpful and friendly. The cajun chicken fries were filling and tasty. I have so many things to try, so I will return a lot! The variety of beverages was impressive too! read more

Drive past this place all the time & finally got to try it! Well shaded outdoor seating with a very chill vibe. Got "The Works" Cheesesteak Half Sandwich & the combo plate (appetizer sampler) and holy moly! So much food!! The sandwich is LOADED. My three go to's: original w onions no peppers and extra cheese. The godfather or the "works" with extra cheese. The flavor of the beef and the fresh rolls are always consistent. And it's in a quaint little shack. It's a place you'd see on diners, drive ins and dives. Surf City staple they've been feeding the neighborhood locals for decades. read more

I made the hour-and-half trek from Marina del Rey all the way to Huntington Beach just to try this place. Definitely worth the drive! As a New England transplant, I'm always on the lookout for the top dog of cheesesteak subs, and this place doesn't disappoint. I can't quite give it top ranks yet, but it definitely deserves an 8.7/9 out of 10. The perfect cheesesteak has a certain drippy-to-dry ratio so that your bread isn't completely soaked and falling apart by the end of your meal. They're pretty close to the top, but don't let this one factor take you away from everything else that's great. Meat quality? Awesome. Portion? SIZE. Value? Absolutely. They lost me as a customer. Showed up to get some food to go 10min before they "closed" at their posted times of 8pm, and was told they actually closed at 7:30p so they can put stuff away and go home. So, then change your store hours to 7:30p. Your store hours are when you're open serving customers, not when the staff goes home! Not returning because who knows when the staff wants to close and go home! The owner needs to update the store hours or have better training of the staff! Either way, great way to run a business! Been eating the cheesesteaks here since 1995. Grew up eating this and was always a stop after hitting the beach. Always hits the spot. Always remains consistent. I moved to Vegas and always come to visit and make a stop here. Forever in my top eats of my life. Haven't had a Philly beat this one yet. So if you drive by this place and you haven't stopped by yet, you are missing out. Yes they have very good cheesesteaks, but they have Fantastic burgers and hoagies too. They have a comfy pation to sit down and enjoy your food, but usually do take out. One family member is super picky of their turkey sandwich, but thoroughly enjoyed it from John's. The burgers here are fresh and hot , but also good sized burgers. Even though this may not be my goto for cheesesteaks, they are still super good here, and i just can't day a bad thing about their burgers. You have got to try it out. Hope you enjoy it. Oh and the tasty cakes are good too, but they don't make those. read more

Good variety of items on their menu. We ordered onion rings and the works philly sandwich. It was good with lots of flavor but a little greasy. The onion rings were 5 out of 5 stars. Service was interesting. The young man working the register was really friendly and talkative and had a lot to say lol. There isn't a bathroom for customers. Okay I won't say it's the best Philly's but I will say it's one of the best I've had and without a doubt the most packed ever, if your hungry they got you ,fry's hot n fresh steak style I suggest bring some banana peppers like I did and hit it with the Frenches mustard couldn't get past the first half ! My friend had a need for a sub sandwich at lunch today. I immediately brought him to our favorite sandwich in Surf City! The Philly Grill! Zack was manning the order window at noon today. That guy is really good at providing the very best customer service and entertaining show! He may be the best in the business. Great food great service. My go to place for Philly Cheesesteak. No indoor seating or bathrooms, but the food makes up for it. The one in Seal Beach is by far my favorite, but they only stay open till 6:00. This one is open till 7:00. read more

I came here with my friends after our half-marathon. Fun fact Kobe Bryant visited this place! They have a photo with him on the wall haha. The Philly cheese steak here is great! They really pack it on with the chili peppers so it was really spicy. We also got the pizza fries and those were 10/10. Service is pretty quick. They only have outside seating. read more

The mall had a lot of surface, uncovered spots, so parking wasn't a problem around lunch time. One orders and pays at the counter, and the sandwiches are brought out to you when dining in. The menu consists of both cold and hot sandwiches. There is a self serve ice water jug, along with a self-serve pickles (sliced kosher dills) and peppers (both pepperoncini and cascabella). It's a really nice touch and we took advantage. One thing that made me do a double take was the offer of $3 anytime pints of the house lager on tap. It was confirmed by the owner that it was correct, and each of us got a glass. Clover is the payment system used here, and was able to get a text with the bill. It took a bit of time for the sandwiches to come out. Our friend and I split two hot sandwiches. First being a Mock Ruben ($12.50) consisting of Corned beef, swiss, sauerkraut, and mustard on rye. I thought it was good, with a nice meld of flavors and well grilled/toasted bread (not a strong rye). Friend thought it was dry. We both agreed my sandwich was much better, Cousin Eddie ($14.25) consisting of pastrami, swiss, deli mustard, 1000 island, and pickled red cabbage. It came on a soft hoagie roll, and the flavors really melded together well. My wife got a Messi ($14.25), a roast beef with pepperjack with chimichurri and onions on ciabatta. Since my wife is not a fan of neither chimichurri and onions, I asked for it on the side, which was recorded that way on the bill. For some reason, a custom item charge of $0.75 was put on the bill (thinking it was for the side of chimichurri), and unfortunately there was chimichurri on the sandwich which my wife gamely tried to pick off. None of the sandwiches were large, nor were any of them stacked with that much meat. In fact I was able to eat half of each of the sandwiches, but for the price, I thought it was very reasonable. The pickle and pepper bar is a great idea, letting anybody add some zing to any sandwich. The service was friendly, as the owner genuinely seemed to care what we thought (though my wife didn't feel like complaining about the chimichurri). And the pints of the house blonde on tap was a bargain. They seem to have a pizza night on Thursday, and the beer would absolutely hit the spot then.

I have to say, you get your bang for your buck here. I usually get the South Philly and then take half of it home. Philly Grille really makes you feel like your in Philly, which is part of the reason I like it. The patrons and employees really give you that vibe that if you get some mustard or cheez whiz on your hands, just wipe it on your jeans and keep eating. I've only been to this place a couple of times, and surprisingly the same cashier was there! Nick is awesome. Super friendly, and knows the menu well. I left the fate of my lunch in his hands, and was not disappointed! He ordered me a #4 works cheesesteak, and told me that that Jacob, the cook, would have it out as soon as possible. Sure enough, I didn't have to wait too long, and by the time I was at my car, I was already digging into my bag for the sandwich. The choices of different types of steaks could be a little overwhelming, keeping it simple I got "The Works". The bread is Cheese-steak perfect and good luck eating a whole in one sitting, it made a great dinner and leftover lunch. I love how the guys behind the counter are kind of unpolished and brass. "what you want?" "I got an order for Sandy!!! Sandy, orders up!!!!" But at the same time they aren't a-holey at all.
