I've been to Philadelphia and I've sampled their cheesesteaks. Marvelous stuff, that. I was told by the owner of Sonny's Famous Steaks that the ultimate in cheesesteaks is a steak with sweet peppers and Cheese Wiz, so that's what I got and I don't regret it. Tonight I had the pleasure of ordering from Philly's Best and I was not disappointed. I ordered the Pepper Steak with Wiz and it was delicious. I love how Philly's not only cuts the sandwich in half, but also double wraps the sandwich in two sheets of foil paper wrap. The cheese was perfectly melted throughout the sandwich, the sweet peppers were moist and juicy and had the perfect sweetness to complement the steak. I also got an order of onion rings...thick and scrumptious batter goodness. Perfect with ketchup. I don't live here, but I'm visiting a friend as I do every summer and I'll be sure to make Philly's Best a stop at least once next year. I only wish there was one near me in Florida. read more

I have had better cheesesteak at Subway believe it or not! I don't know if it was an off day or what but it was not what I was expecting. I read the reviews before we went for lunch and was looking forward to having a cheesesteak w/shrooms and cheese. What I got was meat w/canned mushrooms and barely any cheese. The onion rings are why I gave it a whole nother star ! I would have rated just a one if I hadn't eaten those wonderful delicious onion rings ! If you're in Irvine and want to eat a good Philly Cheesesteak, Philly's Best is the place to be. In a city where you tend to see a lot of same restaurants over and over, this is a nice little gem located on Barranca & West Yale (1 block off of Culver). I can't speak for too many of the menu items, because I almost always order the Pepper Steak - but it's what keeps me coming back. Their onion rings are really good too. The atmosphere inside is generally pretty laid back and relaxing for the most part (just avoid going around ~12:30 on weekdays). My only complaint is that they don't take credit cards. I've tried the chicken with the same toppings, which is also pretty good, though not as flavorful. I don't really care for the fries and onion rings here. They do accept credit cards. Best cheesesteak spot I've ever had, and I've been here so many times since my first because of just how good it is. All sorts of cheesesteak options that are delicious and they gave great fries as well. They have somewhere between 3-5 TVs so you can catch any game that may be on live at the moment. The inside is Philadelphia inspired so there's sports teams and icons from Philadelphia everywhere. It's an awesome divey cheesesteak spot with a few locations scattered around Orange County! So disappointed. This has been our go to spot for 20 + years. Today upon entering no one even said hello. A worker walked in the door right in front of us and walked behind the counter and was throwing French fries in the fryer without ever washing his hands. My cheesesteak was a hot mess. Hardly any cheese on my cheesesteak and the beef was shriveled and dried out as if it had been cooked ages ago and merely reheated. The bread which is always tasty was tough and chewy as if it had been microwaved. The cheese fries were burned to a crisp. The workers (who were a bunch of kids) were mostly standing around talking and at one point yelled out an obscenity because they realized they were burning the cheese. They pulled a wad Saran Wrap out of the burned cheese and proceeded to refill the cheese container on the stove with it anyway. My husbands Italian Hoagie was a soggy mess. None of the food was worth the calories. Still trying to be polite, upon leaving we thanked the workers and were met with no response. This never would have happened with the seasoned employees that were usually there. Sorry to say won't be back. read more

The sandwich is overpriced for the quality you get. Also, the people that work here make you feel guilty about ordering food. I asked the person I want a "Philly's Best" for "here". He asks me 3 times if I want it to go and I'm like "no sir I can eat here" and when my order is ready he says he "accidentally" made it to go. Came here for the first time today. Had a Philly's Best and onion rings To-Go. Everything was awesome and they would've gotten 5-stars if not for the fresh onion rings in a small styrofoam container. It's a nicel little location, I've always enjoyed a good cheese steak. It's one of the better places to get a cheese steak, and the staff is always polite. I've never had trouble finding a parking spot, even though the parking lot is designed pretty bad.. There are a few items on the menu that seem to have been done wrong, they get a little too experimental, and sometimes it's not worth trying new things out. The price seems fair to me, and I like the television sets they have. It's a place you can sit down and enjoy your food. My only problem is the orders are usually done wrong, the guy working the grill doesn't seem to pay too much attention. My solution to this, I order items how they're normally made and pick off the stuff I don't want. The tables usually need to be cleaned, so combine that with your orders getting messed up and it's a decent place. I only drop by there for a cheese steak once a year or so, it's not that bad I guess. read more

The food here is amazing. My favorite is the pepperoni cheesesteak. I've also had the cheesesteak fries, burgers, and other various forms of cheesesteak . TO clarify, you don't go here for fine dining by any means. It's a cheesesteak place; greasy, yummy, cheesy sandwiches. The food is always quick. (5-15 minutes) even when it's busy; the great thing about this style of food is that it's hard to mess up. Bread+chopped steak+cheese. Just tried this eatery for the first time today. We ordered a Philly cheesesteak, Italian hoagie, turkey hoagie, onion rings and Birch beers. We all loved our choices. I'll confess - this was the first cheesesteak I've ever eaten, so I can't do any comparisons. I got a cheesesteak with provolone and a side of onion rings, and it was delicious! The juicy, warm sandwich hit the spot on a cold day, to the point that I somehow managed to polish off the entire thing. The onion rings were nice and crunchy, and I could taste the beer in the batter. I practically had to be rolled out of there. My family has been coming here since the Irvine location opened some 20 years ago. Sadly it has gone WAY downhill. My husband went today and got cheesesteak sandwiches and brought them home. They seriously tasted like they were dunked in dirty dish water. I called and asked to speak to the manager (said he was Raul) who promptly decided to argue with me about how our sandwiches tasted. I told him how long we've been customers and that the chef who has been there forever knows us for decades. He then claimed all the employees have been there as long as the grill chef. All of us long time customers know that is a flat out lie. No one else has been there half as long as that guy and recently there are tons of new faces who seem to not even understand the menu. Not to mention that my husband watched the cashier handle money then wrap up the food w/o washing his hands and with NO GLOVES! The health dept really needs to pay a secret visit to this place and see how things are being done. It pains me to say it but since management obviously has zero interest in fixing what is clearly wrong, we will not be back. Avoid! read more

Being from just outside Philly, I had to know. Big let down :( Steak was too dry and rather tasteless (did you even add pepper?). Also, come on guys, you don't put the lettuce/tomato underneath the steak it goes ON TOP. Keeps it from cooking as much. This place has REALLY good cheesesteaks, but thats not the thing that i get. You should get the cheesteak fries. Its basically a platter of fries topped with steak, cheese and onions(if you want them). Ive been here twice in one week, and the first time i went, the cashier was a really friendly guy (prob a college student). I went in today and the guy that worked there wasnt the friendliest i have met. If you like chicken, get the cheesesteak fries, but instead of cheesesteak, get the buffalo chicken. Straight and to the point; aside from going to Philly yourself, you're not going to find a better cheesesteak in SoCal. They import the bread from PA, the steaks and onions are grilled to perfection, and they use the only cheese that belongs on a cheesesteak- good ol' American. Don't come here if you're counting calories. There aren't any wraps or lettuce cheesesteaks. But, this is the place to go if you're looking to indulge. Don't forget to add some cheese fries to your order. And, treat yourself to a Tasty Cake- you might as well go all out! The staff is awesome, too. They treat you with true Philly respect- lots of sarcasm and jokes. It's also a great place to watch sports. Good food, but don't ask if there is onions in their tuna salad. I asked, one person said yes, the other said no, finally they both agreed no. I asked for a tuna salad hoagie. It said on the menu the hoagie was made with tuna salad. I got a glob if tuna served on lettuce. (Tuna salad) I was wondering why I got such a weird look when I asked if I could add pickles. He was probably wondering why I gave him a weird look when he asked if I wanted ranch on the side. This on top of an already bad day. Not the relaxing lunch I wanted.
