The Amoroso roll was soft and light; steak was chopped and tender mixing well with the onions, sweet peppers (that were sweet and slightly tart), and mushrooms. I've had a few Philly Cheesesteaks in LA and OC. The BEST cheesesteaks I find come from owners who grew up in Philly, forget the rest including bigbox and fastfood types (these are imitators), they don't compare. Authentic Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches should be "overfilled" with ingredients and "messy" falling apart in your hands. (I compare it to The Hat pastrami, if you know what I mean.) The only drawback at this location was how it smelled when you opened the door. More like cleaning liquids than food smell (I literally had to hold my breath while entering), but eventually went away. Well, if I want a ground beef sandwich, I know where to come. I hadn't eaten here in around a year because the last time I did, I was disappointed with the quality and taste issues with both the cheesesteaks and the fries that accompanied the seeming change in management. The cheesesteaks that used to be full to the brim had then been stingy and the fries reeked and tasted of oil that had been reused wayy too many times. To add insult to injury, the prices had jacked up a ton. But, before hitting a road trip, we decided this would be one step above fast food so decided to give this place another shot. Huge mistake. Somehow, and at some point, someone decided that the steak that goes inside the cheeseSTEAK could be swapped with what looks, tastes, and feels like ground beef. True story. From the crumbly texture when chewing, the watery taste that could stem from what I think was a hurried attempt to semi-boil and/or thaw frozen meat, and the fact that 25% of the meat fell every time I took a bite, I'm almost certain they are using ground beef. At a minimum, it is clear they switched their meat and it is not for the better. I can only speculate that it was in response to complaints of stingy meat because they had filled our sandwiches to the brim with this meat. Had a Philly Classic Cheesesteak it came with Thinly sliced steak cooked to order with melted white American cheese served on a genuine Amoroso roll it was so delicious and every bite you taste the melted cheese and onions. I've ordered from here a number of times over the years, and they've always been good. Then I got a steak and cheese with onions tonight to go, enjoyed the first half and decided to save the second for later. I just had a quarter, saving the rest for later and as I was rewrapping it, I appreciated that they provide a two-foil system. The first foil was damp, soaked in juices. It kept the bread and meat moist. Even cold, it was delicious. But no mess in the fridge, because that second layer kept it cozy, like a baby kangaroo in it's mother's pouch. Ordered pickup, had a nice conversation with Josh, and got home to find one sandwich was made incorrectly. Called and they would replace it. Got back and picked up order and to our surprise- some tasty cake treats, extra sauces and a gift card to make up for the incorrect order. On this one random day, my partner was craving a Philly cheesesteak, so we decided to order from Philly's for the first time. I've only ever had a cheesesteak once at a diner last year. We placed an order on their website, and got two of their Philly's Best and onion rings, which came out to about $44. Picking up was quick and easy, and they had our order ready on time. Now for the sandwiches. Y'all, when I tell you, the sandwiches were literally the length of my forearm and stuffed to the max! I was shocked at how much food there was. For the price you pay, you definitely get your money's worth in quantity. Quality-wise, I'd say it was okay. Maybe I'm just not totally into the cheesesteak idea, so it wasn't the tastiest thing in the world for me. I can definitely see this more of a bang for your buck to fill you up kind of lunch. I ended up having a quarter of the sandwich at a time, and was able to split it up into four eating sessions. I also liked that there were options to add in additional greens like lettuce and tomatoes. The Philly's Best comes with the meat, cheese of your choice, onions, and bell peppers. Not sure if the other franchisees are the same, but ever since Covid they've gone down hill. First of all, even before the recent inflation they kept raising the price of their sandwiches, I get it, costs goes up but dang higher prices and shrinkflation? We started coming here less. However this past visit, was the worst one and the last time I'll ever come here. Hard to redeem after this experience. To start: 1) Cheesesteak - barely any cheese. As you can see in the pic, it seems like they're using half the cheese they normally did or used to. 2) Dry meat - I know freezer burned beef when I taste it. And maybe cause velocity has decreased due to poor value or something, I guess they're trying to save every buck they can. 3) Onion Rings - what seemed like a smaller portion than before wasn't really the issue, huge cakey batter and over cooked. Like the onion was mushy. Eww. Taste was ok though. The only two reasons why it's not 1 star review is that the workers were nice and the pickled peppers and kosher pickles were still as good as before. A legit Philly Cheesesteak is a beautiful thing, and you can get one at this place, no cap. The drill is you order and pay at the counter, and they let you know when your order is ready. I have been to to the Irvine Philly's Best on previous occasions, and it was decent. I was planning on going again today with my small fam, and after adding everything to the cart and looking at the price, we were like, nope! Two sandwiches, one basic cheeseburger, one cheese fries, and three drinks were going to be $55 before tip. The drinks are the most egregious part- $4 each for a medium fountain drink, meaning we would have spent $12 for three drinks. Crazy. Anyhow, my feeling is that this place is pricing itself out of existence. I realize everything is expensive now, but $55 for two adults and a kid to eat a quick lunch (before tip) is a little over the top. And we were getting about the bare minimum. Needless to say, we went to Habit Burger instead and paid a little over half of what Philly's Best was going to cost.
