Malaysia meets France is the theme here from what I was told regarding the background of the couple who opened Petite 4 years ago. Upon entrance, the space was cute, clean but small. Few tables to dine in. Service was lackluster--our simple order of 2 tapas-like dishes took a back seat to a party of 4 whose entrees arrived at their table in record breaking time. They arrived after us. It was pretty late and our order included Shrimp Har Gow and Taro Gratin (cake like). The latter turned into a second order a short while later along with a pot of weak Jasmine tea. We didn't care for the Shrimp dumplings because the seafood taste was quite strong and overwhelming--if that makes sense. Something I'm not accustomed to. We certainly liked the Taro which was steamed and included some good flavors though the Five Spice Powder was overdone. The tea was good but I'm used to experiencing a more floral, distinct Jasmine flavoring that makes this tea one of my favorites. It was absent here. Overall, I appreciate the effort and spin on Chinese Dim Sum, and this business makes a genuine attempt as an imposter. However, call me a snob, but I love Chinese Dim Sum. This was the perfect spot for our lunch! We ordered several shareables - chicken siumai, pork belly bao, pulled pork bao, cucumber salad (spicy!), pork and chive dumplings, and scallion pancakes. Served with appropriate sauces and all delicious! We ordered conveniently on an iPad (paper menus also available), and were served by and efficient and friendly server. We sat is the window looking out at the busy street. The restaurant is quite small (petite!) and cute. We walked there from where we were staying in the vibrant neighborhood. I like to eat here after getting chiro for my arthritis because it's hard to immediately travel back to Queens without resting & having a meal first. The spinach tofu congee with egg is very comforting and has protein and veggies I need for recovery. Sometimes it's hard to find vegetarian congee options if it's not specifically a vegan restaurant, so I'm happy they have this option. I also love the walnut cream bao buns for a dessert. Finally crossed this place off our neighborhood list. So many things on the menu we wanted to try, but on a financial and caloric budget, we had to be strategic. Ordering is usually through a QR code to their ordering website, but you can always ask to place your order in person. There was only one person serving the whole dining room (5-6 tables). We ordered the chicken sticky rice in lotus leaf, roast pork gua bao, sichuan ban mein, mee fun noodle soup with chicken broth, roast duck, chicken wonton, mixed vegetables, and salted egg custard bun. Food was served in an odd order. Soup and noodles came first, then the dim sum and gua bao were served second. Would have preferred the reverse order but at least our salted egg custard bao came out last for dessert. The noodle soup was nice. Nothing to write home about but it was a very clean broth with two pieces of roast duck. Sichuan ban mein was probably my favorite dish. Noodles were the perfect bouncy and chewiness from fresh knife-cut noodles, good spice level. Gua bao was a little disappointing as the roast pork was very dry, almost rubbery and the little amount of sauce in the bao couldn't save it. The sticky rice was ok, a little wet, the filling was only chicken, and would have loved lap cheong. We were walking down 5th when we decided to give this spot a try. The interior is really cozy and minimally decorated. There are QR codes to order the food and the service is fast and friendly. We ordered the tofu puff, har gow, and the veggie rolls. We really enjoyed the texture of the veggie rolls as they were deep fried rice paper. Didn't love the tofu puff but the har gow was great! Love it! Park slope finally has decent homemade authentic Chinese food! The noodle and dim sum dishes brought back childhood memories for me. They may not be fancy but taste homemade. We had mala cucumber salad, Sichuan Ban Mein, crab and pork dumpling and coconut curry noodle. I thought all were very good and flavorful except for curry noodle which needs more salt. Daoxiao ("knife shaved") noodle is a specialty of the Shanxi province. It is thicker and chewer in middle and thinner on the sides. I love the texture. Incredibly impressed with this place. Coming from someone who considers himself a massive dumpling snob (XLB's in particular), I think these Xao Long Bao's/soup dumplings are right up there with Din Tai Fung - no joke. We also had the roast pork bao's and chicken shumai which were also both fantastic. You really felt like everything was made fresh and not just pulled out of a freezer bag. Lovely outdoor table on a buzzy Park Slope 5th ave. Also, fantastic and very pleasant service. They've got a pretty good menu with a variety of options for vegetarians and pescatarians alike. I got the Har Gow shrimp dumplings and the Mala spicy noodle soup with veggie broth, thin rice noodles, and shrimp, sliced fish (tilapia), and mushrooms as my toppings! I also added a black tea egg. Overall, a great meal! I was definitely satisfied. Although I've had better dumplings, these do the job so if I came here for some of the other menu items I'd prob still order the dumplings again. I really liked the Mala broth, it hit the spot. I'm very excited to try the Ban Mein noodles & the fish and veggie congees next time!! What could have been! Just to start the review out on a positive note, the service is good! It was just one woman working at a pretty empty lunchtime and we chatted a bit. Props to her. I also thought the noodle soup was pretty good! Not the best egg noodles but loved the leafy greens. The fish balls were great and while I like my bbq roast pork a little sweet this was still good. Now to the unfortunate part. The dim sum is bad. Objectively bad. I judge most places off the har gau and Shumai before ordering more interesting things. There isn't actually a ton of dim sum? There's dumplings and soup dumplings and some buns. And then there's a list of 6-7 things that are their "dim sum". The har gau was quite small and the shrimp inside was just mashed to hell. Completely bland. That was the better of the two. The shumai is some of the worst I've had. The top part of the wrapper had dried up and was skewed at odd angles. The meat inside was salty and just tasted kinda weird. And there were chives in it? I think they actually just took their pork dumpling mix and put it in a shumai. Guess what?! It doesn't taste good! This place touts itself as a dim sum place, something the neighborhood and most of Brooklyn desperately needs. It's even decently priced. They have signs outside explaining the deliciousness and importance of dim sum and Cantonese cooking. But when you sit in the small space, listening to French jazz over the speakers, after eating their food you realize that it's all talk. You never want a place to fail. But this neighborhood (or maybe just me) was so excited for this place. It's easy enough to order frozen dim sum from a variety of places or if you're more adventurous, make some yourself. A small no-frills restaurant with nice enough staff. Reason for two stars instead of one: First time went in person, the dumplings were really good, thin skins, both filling and sauce were tasty. Decided to order pickup and this time it was disaster. The "potsticker" pork/chives dumplings were burned and smashed up together in a row with no separation between them. I don't know how burned dumplings made it out of the kitchen of a place called Petite Dumpling, much less into a pickup container. The edges were black and peeled off like rubber bands. Same order decided to try the shiitake shumai. Utterly tasteless, and the mushroom caps were kind of rubbery and did not seem fresh. Ordered the crab cake. My advice: don't. Did not eat it, as it smelled horribly fishy. Like the dumplings, it was charred. $13 in the trash on that one item alone. To top it off the sauces were bland. read more
