I came here with a group of friends on a Saturday night for a pre-Christmas celebration. I made a reservation a couple of days or a week prior to our visit, and it was easy to get a reservation at a normal hour for our group of five. We got there a little before our reservation time and were seated immediately. At the time we came, they had both indoor and outdoor dining available. They did not check our vaccination cards as we were in the outdoor area, but you do need to show them if you're eating inside. The outdoor area was located in a section that was off the side walk. Perle managed to create a nice ambience despite being on the street. Once our friends arrived, we ordered food. My husband and I shared the onion soup and escargots. Both were excellent. The escargots were very garlicky, while the onion soup was hearty and cheesy. For mains, my husband got the truffle carbonara, while I had the coq au vin. Coq au vin is one of my favorite French dishes, and I loved Perle's rendition of it. The sauce had a strong red wine flavor, and the chicken was soft and tender. I left no food on the plate. My husband similarly scarfed his pasta down before I could even have a bite. One thing that I really liked about Perle was that they had a whole page in their menu dedicated to vegetarian dishes, including a vegetarian coq au vin that was made with braised soy drum sticks. Although I didn't try it this time, I will definitely try on another occasion. Would highly recommend eating at Perle if you're in the mood for classic French cuisine at a superb place. read more

My wife & I enjoyed a perfect evening tonight at Perle. First time here. Service was exceptional and the food was also wonderful. We sat outside to enjoy the comfortable temperature and the energy of the street, and I'm glad we did. Definitely recommended. What an experience. We finally took a date night and decided to take our time with a really nice meal so we went to Perle for their pre fixe menu. It was fantastic. The standouts included the truffle pasta, and the salmon. The flavors and textures on everything were just excellent. Cocktails were absolutely fantastic as well. My only negative feedback is that the meal was overall quite heavy. But what do you expect? It's upscale French cuisine. There's going to be a lot of fat. The beef was a little underwhelming, but I'm a huge snob when it comes to beef so take that with a grain of salt. It was probably the most expensive meal I've had in a couple years. I had an odd craving for French food and this place was very good at satisfying it! We didn't have a reservation but we arrived a bit before the dinner rush so they were able to sit my friend and I at the bar. Our server and bartender, Han Suk, was very nice, attentive, and helpful throughout our meal. She gave us food recommendations and wine pairings for our food as well. My water cup was never empty and all plates were brought in and taken away without us even wondering or needing to ask! The steak tartare was Amazing, like it blew our minds. If anything, I was The Most Impressed with this dish! I came here for escargot and it was very good! Not exactly what I was expecting and can't really say it was the best I had, but very good overall. The herbyness and the butter was really good and not too overpowering. I just wish we had some more bread to soak up the sauce! Lastly, the coq au vin was good but unimpressive! It definitely was not the best one I've had and just did not leave anything memorable to me. I had high expectations for this place given the Michelin star. I tried the vegetarian French onion soup. I was looking forward to this, as I typically do not eat beef based broth. I found the vegetarian version of the soup to be quite bland, and although there was, a nice generous portion of cheese, not enough flavor for the dish to sustain it. I highly recommend the Bronzino. It was absolutely perfect; cooked to perfection. The bed of corn and other vegetables sat on was tasty. I originally ordered Valentine's Day set menu, but seeing that there are too few dishes at other tables, we changed to order what we want The in the pot is a little oily, and the shell is stuffed with bread to absorb oil. I've been wanting to try Perle Restaurant in Pasadena since joining SGV Eats; however, it wasn't as most hyped it to be. Regardless of pandemic, we need to be honest critics above all else. We'll just agree to disagree on this due to different pallets. Happy to have tried it for ourselves and checking it off my list and enjoyed the date with hubby! French Onion Soup & Escargot we're great starters. Truffle Pasta, which was their "specialty" front and center on their menu was really not what I'd expect from $45 entree. Yes there were decent amount of truffle shaved on top a normal Alfredo pasta where the sauce broke (bit of a curd vs creamy smooth texture expected). The reason it was an empty bowl was due to the horrific Duck L'Orange, a classic French dish, that was just yuck , I had to spit it out as I couldn't chew nor swallow the half piece I had. It lacked major flavor and the duck fat wasn't rendered properly and was almost like duck sashimi - can you imagine that?! We chose to get a togo box rather than sending it back as 1. Pandemic and showing our support, 2. Hubby can repurpose it way better than the restaurant served. So Perle is like where the supporting actors get nominated instead of the main actors! Truthfully, I was initially attracted to the interior aesthetics which prompted me to get a seat, without having any clue the type of food they served. 'I hate French food'; that is no longer true after eating at Perle. OMG, this place is amazing! My wife wanted to try it out and I have to say, I'm glad I agreed to go. You gotta get the Escargot as a starter. It's just the perfect appetizer. We decided to order the Sole Meunière and the Coq Au Vin and both were definitely enough food for us to share. If you're a big eater, try adding a Steak Tartare. That was going to be our 2nd choice. The Coq Au Vin chicken came out in a bed of mashed potatoes and the chicken was moist and plentiful. The Perle onions in this dish were the best onions I've ever tasted. If all onions were cooked like this, I'll be eating onions by the pound. Sole Meunière was a huge portion of fish. It had the perfect amount of everything and topped with almonds, the dish was complete. My regrets for the meal was that we had to brown bag some of the chicken because we weren't able to finish our dish and we didn't get a chance to try other dishes especially their desserts. This was one of my favorite restaurants in Pasadena! Based on my recommendation, my discerning foodie friends of 7 decided to come here for dinner on a Wednesday night celebrating two friends' birthday. The evening started off fine, we were greeted warmly and seated promptly upon our 5:30pm arrival, it's expected considering we were the only customers at the time. Upon complementing the menu, all seven of us decided to order the "taste of Perle" tasting menus; I loved their tasting menu on a previous visit, if you have not tried it, you should. The service for our first 3 courses felt a bit rushed, but surely it started to decline as the small restaurant started to receive more customers around 6:30-7pm, our water glasses were empty, we were pouring our own wine, etc., the funny moment was that when I tried to waive down the wait staffs passing by, it was like I had the magic power of being invisible. By the way, up to this moment the foods tasted fabulous especially the 3rd course BRANZINO ET RATATOUILLE, it's cooked to perfection, we were so pleased we told our waiter to pay the chef a compliment; little did we now our compliment to the chef had a negative impact; there was a long wait after the 3rd course...... no water, no service, no food, imagine our delight when the long anticipated 4th course Coq Au Vin was finally served, all 7 of us breathed a sign of relief, it smelled like heaven! We digged our fork in only to find that the slow cooked Cog Au Vin, a true classic French dish, tasted like the chicken was slowly braised not in red wine, but in the saltiest sodium you can imagine, it's bitterly salty not only 1, 2 or 3 but all 7 dishes! I believe it's at this precise moment all 7 of us and the dishes became invisible because the wait staffs were completely oblivious about us until I finally got a chance to tell our waiter about the unpleasant taste, he looked at all 7 dishes and simply replied: do you want to send them "all back"? I must admit I was tempted to do that, but considering the poor services, the slow cooking method required for Cog Au Vin and we have a driver picking us up soon, we decided not to send 7 salty chicken back. Did my party have a good time at Perle? Despite the above mentioned, we did. We are all business owners, we are happy and gracious albeit discerning who appreciate good food and a good time, in fact we are still laughing about the salty chicken and the poor service the evening we visited. We think if Perle wishes to continue its success, and to have repeated patrons, and continue to automatically tag on a 4% fee for the kitchen and 20% service charge for large party, it ought to deliver professional service. read more

The perceived excellence of their cuisine and restaurant does not represent any vital part of French culinart excellence. Anyone familiar with French bistro culture is well versed in moules frites. The traditional basic preparation is "moules marinières"--fresh, live mussels are steamed in white wine, garlic and herbs, then heaped, shell, broth and all, into a bowl and served with a baguette and a pile of hot fries on the side.  After you've polished off your stack of mussels, you're left with the wine and garlic infused broth. I consider this the crowning glory of the moules frites experience, eating it by the spoonful or soaking it up with a baguette...wait a minute, there was no bread served with the dish. As a starting point, crisp, dry, unoaked whites work well with seafood dishes. The wine was more pronounced in this dish than it needed to be. Clearly, the chef did not cook off the all the alcohol and left the dish with an unreasonable amount of acidity. Perle serves mussels in a deep and narrow pot with a shallow pool of broth making you work excessively to get broth with each bite. Steak Frites may seem like the world's easiest dish (only two main ingredients), but the steak must be meaty and juicy, the potatoes buttery and crisp, and both must arrive at the table piping hot. Our steak was served at room temp with wrong amout of doneness. The Truffle Pasta ($45) was nothing more than alfredo with truffle essence. The portion is not what you expect for an entree. The French Onion Soup ($14) is a good version filled with savory, meaty broth and sweet onions, and it's topped with a baguette crouton and bubbly  cheese. This dish earned the third star. Perle has no bar, beer and wine only. Corkage is $40. Bistro food is much loved by Americans for its romantic yet unpretentious dishes. It doesn't take a trip to Perle to find bistro staples that'll make you feel like you're dining in Paris...just a few more searches online. OK, 4.5 stars. In a word: excellent. Contemporary and French-inspired food that's well-executed and delicious. The hamachi crudo is an explosion of flavors, the pate en croute is more of the same, and the steak frites (something I'm usually reluctant to order) was delicious. The strip steak (instead of hanger cut) is cooked perfectly and the spuds are twice-fried, as they should be. Opt for the bone marrow Bordelaise upgrade, you'll be glad you did. The peas were also really good, and the tarte tatin was tasty (and huge). Appetizer and entree prices are reasonable but they can get expensive with truffle and caviar upgrades, so be forewarned. Portions are OK, and you can't "pound" this kind of food anyway. The wine list is expensive and kind of weird, but the woman sommelier is on her game even if the wines are kind of out there (like a white from Armenia, not sure I'd want to take a chance on that one). Oh, and bread & butter will set you back 5 bucks, something they're seemingly all doing these days, but it's good, and the butter is spreadable and dusted with Maldon salt. The stemware is nice, too. Without hesitation I would go back in a heartbeat & also recommend to my most discerning friends. The lardons took me to the french country side, the yolk coated the frisee with the richness only a perfectly poached egg can bring, the cherry tomatoes balanced the fat with it's tart/acidity, the pan juice from the lardon tempted me to lick the plate clean. I didn't even mention the PERFECT crouton with chicken liver pate. Smooth, balanced, rich. The paté is soooo good. For the main, caper berries in the bone marrow demi glace cut the fat and again, balanced the dish perfecty. The NY strip was perfect med rare, the fries were absolutely perfect. Crispy, yet not hollow. I noticed the souffle in my peripheral and knew to order when my main was served. Fresh vanilla pod specks we're present throughout the creme angleise and creme fraiche, the souffle was light, strong dark chocolate notes pranced across my palette To my server Austin, you were incredible. Thank you for making me feel welcome and conversating with me at the perfect amount throughout service. This is a restaurant that I have long wanted to try. I didn't come until today because of the epidemic, but I am thrilled that I came. One of the things that made me happiest in the past few months. Charcuterie&wine, I like very much, especially a small snack with apples on it (I don't know the name) 's incredible. There are at least four ingredients in it. Several flavors are mixed together, the interaction is spread out layer by layer, and finally, the sweetness of the apple is finished. The oysters with caviar also have a unique flavor. The caviar finally raised the delicious oysters to another level. Other dishes are also tasty. Today's Tarte Tatin seem to be under fire. COVID-19: Social distancing is enforced at this establishment. All of the staff wears a mask and face shield. All customers are expected to wear a mask too when they are away from their table. The waitstaff do not wear gloves. There are some hand sanitizers available for customers to use. This place is available for take outs and has some outdoor and indoor seating available with limited capacity. They are also sanitizing the tables, menus, and high touch areas in between customers. Since this place is super popular and because they are limiting capacity, you MUST book a reservation ahead of time. While I was eating my food in this establishment last night, I asked if they had any special offers and they weren't offering any at the moment. They currently don't have happy hour. They also do not allow pets in their establishment. Parking: You can either find metered street parking or you can park in the parking garage right across from the restaurant for $6. Food: First, we started off with some sparking water. Next, my friends and I ordered the Golden State Punch. The Golden State punch tasted delicious. It was very fruity, which was perfect for us. I decided to take one star off because we had about 1/4 left of the bottle when a server took away the bottle. He had taken it away when we decided to order a bottle of Pinot Noir. He didn't even bother to ask us if we wanted to finish the rest of the Golden State Punch before he took it away. Kk. For appetizers, we ordered the charcuterie board, escargots, yellowtail crudo, steak tartare with black truffles, and oysters. The charcuterie board was meh. Nothing super exciting about it. The escargots were bomb though. The garlic and bread in the snail was so mouthwatering. Great job! The yellowtail crudo was okay as well. It didn't blow my mind. The steak tartare with black truffles was delicious. I think it was the truffles that really brought out the flavors. So fricken good! The oysters were very fresh and tasty. And as for entrees, we decided to order the black truffle pasta and steak frites with bone marrow bordelaise. The black truffle pasta was to die for. So creamy, rich, and tasty. I would come back just for their black truffle pasta. I mean, it really was that good. Their steak frites with bone marrow bordelaise was great too. We had our steak cooked medium rare and it was very tender and juicy. The fries were crunchy and tasty. The bone marrow bordelaise was perfect for the steak. It really added an extra layer of explosive flavors in our mouths. And as for desserts, we ordered the soufflé. The soufflé came with a side of ice cream, which was awesome. It was very soft, fluffy, and sweet. It was a good way to end the meal. Overall, it was a great experience. Staff: The staff here are very nice, friendly, and attentive. They catered to all of our needs throughout the evening. One criticism though. Can the waitstaff/host wear something that says "Perle" please? I was waiting outside for the rest of my party to arrive when what I thought was a homeless man came up to me and asked me if I had a reservation. After so much hype on SGV Eats, I was so disappointed with the service we received last night and the chocolate soufflé was more like a chocolate lava cake. I still ate the whole thing since I love everything chocolate and maybe I don't understand traditional French chocolate soufflé cake. Just the word soufflé let me have the expectation that the top of the cake would be more puffy and raised. I hate leaving bad reviews especially for a family-owned business and I loved their story. However our waiter never checked on us once. We had to flag him down every time when we needed something. Also neither my dinner date or I drank and it was such a hot night yesterday. We asked for ice water and our water was lukewarm and presented in these tiny cups. When we asked for ice we were given very little ice. To be fair, there were some pluses, the escargots were delicious and the steak and fries were good. The restaurant itself is cute. I just wish the service was more attentive and they need taller water glasses! read more

Better late than never review :) We had Perle takeout for Christmas Eve dinner, and it was absolutely delicious. The food came with an instructions sheet to reheat each dish. There was so much food that we had to save dessert for another day! - Fresh baguette was amazing (probably could have eaten dessert if we didn't eat so much bread!!) - Yellowtail crudo was fresh and refreshing - French onion soup with delicious sourdough and gruyere cheese - lobster was very flavorful with the mushroom, duck confit gizzard and black garlic - stuffed suckling pig was amazing as well, we saw on Instagram the amount of work that went into it (VERY impressive!!) the skin wasn't crispy, but I am sure it would have been if we had it fresh from the kitchen! The staff were all fantastic. Super friendly and helpful making decisions. The atmosphere is great for a date night but not overly formal. The truffle arancini tasted wonderful. Really amazing dish. The coq au vin was amazing. I didn't care much for the escargot. It kind of tasted the way the ocean smells and I got some shell in mine. It smelled and tasted very earthy but it wasn't great. The branzino had too much salt and it would have been an incredible dish without it. I love pâté and the one served here wasn't the best I've had. I wished they had a combination cheese and charcuterie plate instead of separate, because we got both and it was very expensive. Cheese plate was ok, nothing to write home about. Not really worth the price. The bread was cold and untoasted as well. The beef tartare was great. Perfectly seasoned and minced nicely, with a good texture and no sinewy bits. The frisée salad was decent. Our two last courses were pretty bad. The snails were very salty, and small. They were not meaty at all despite their size, and definitely not worth the price. The French onion soup was the worst I've ever had anywhere. I think they forgot the salt. The broth was bland, watery, and sweet. The cheese wasn't caramelized and just bad. I love cheese and my husband knew it was bad when I said the cheese was awful. There was way too much of it and i felt like I was chewing on rubber. I could buy a can of 99 cent Campbell's French onion soup and it would have been superior to this. Needless to say, we did not finish it. The service was inattentive. It was a small table, we ordered a lot of food, and we had to constantly look for a server to clear away finished plates or get a new round of drinks or to request utensils that they had forgotten to bring. Food: the food was great. My boyfriend and I ordered the caviar service ($110), steak tartare ($18), black truffle pasta ($45), steak and frites ($38), and a soufflé ($17) (pictures attached). Everything was presented well and tasted great. The best dish for me was the black truffle pasta; I'd come back just for that dish. It was extremely rich and creamy and just burst with flavor while also melting away in my mouth. Steak was cooked perfectly (we asked for medium rare) and the steak sauce was amazing, and the fries were crisp, seasoned, and absolutely delicious. Service: service was great. Our waiter was extremely attentive and made sure we never ran out of water. They replaced our small plates with every dish that came out, which I thought was nice. The food came out at a nice pace, not too fast, not too slow. Gave us enough time to actually enjoy our time out without making us impatient and annoyed and asking when the next dish would arrive. Ambiance: we ate outside and their outdoor setup was super cute. Unfortunately, we didn't get a seat next to a heater and we were right by the entrance of the restaurant so there were people constantly standing around us, waiting for their tables, and waiters going in and out. It's because of this that I gave it four stars. A table like that shouldn't exist. I asked to wait for a table with a heater, and the host said there won't be one. Parking: there is a parking structure right across from the restaurant. We were at the restaurant for about two hours and our parking bill was $6. Tip: make your reservations a couple days in advance to get a good dinner time. I made my reservation the day before and couldn't get a time before 8:15. read more

Perle Restaurant has been on my bucket list for places to dine ever since I saw a video on LA Times about how they make their Apple Tarte Tatin. I made a reservation and scored a table. I started with their Onion Soup, rich and delicious. For the main course, I went with the Dover Sole Meuniere, perfectly prepared, accompanied by little potatoes. At $80, it was a splurge. When I ordered, I thought it might be big enough to share if you were so inclined, but the size of the fish was a single portion, not large enough to share. To finish, I ordered the aforementioned Apple Tarte Tatin accompanied by a cinnamon labneh sauce. It was even better than I imagined when I watched the video. I chose a glass of Chablis. I sat outside, near a heater, which was OK. It was sort of chilly and would prefer to dine inside. The service was excellent and very well timed. read more

We ordered a regular prix fixe menu and a vegetarian prix fixe menu (!!). So thrilled to see a tasty vegetarian tasting menu and it did not disappoint! I adored my **Beetroot Salad** (gorgeous plating; I loveee beets paired with tart dairy), and enjoyed my **Squash Blossoms** (ratatouille was savory and flavorful, with punchy brightness from the bean sprout tops?). Plating of my Toffee Pudding was beautiful, but too sweet for my personal taste. Fun textures! I liked my partner's **Peach Pot de Creme** better (not too sweet). Had a standard Sauvignon Blanc with my meal. As much as I enjoyed the dishes, the overall poor timing killed the experience. We arrived at 4:45pm with a reservation and left at 6:30pm - 1 hour 45 minutes for 3 courses, agh! I thought about adding an a la carte dish (that truffle pasta looked foine) but refrained because service was already tediously slow, and I didn't want to wait another 20-30 minutes. Their seating is split 70/30 outdoors/indoors and it felt as if they were trying to maximize the number of guests in a night rather than considering how much their kitchen could actually handle. While I appreciated them making space for us (I called in for an early spot), I feel that they should have known they were at capacity and said no to me. I would much have rather gone to another establishment that could've given us proper attention - my time was not best used here, nor did Perle show their best service tonight. read more
