For some odd reason I've been craving things recently, and tonight I really wanted some pho broth. I got the pho with five spice chicken and the garlic noodles as a side. I actually went straight for the broth-- without the noodles, it was a bit salty, as was to be expected. It was not the lightest broth I had, but left me feeling satiated. The green onions in it had been there for a bit, as they were somewhat waterlogged. This one lacked some of the complexity of flavor I've had in other broths (the lemongrass, different layers, etc.) but I understand pho is not their main focus. 3.25/5. Once in a while, you rediscover chicken that is just so juicy and delicious that it's hard to put down. This five spice chicken is exactly that. Crispy on the outside (with skin!), moist on the inside, and in generous portions. I'll definitely be back for this. 4/5. Wanted to order something for delivery and decided to try this restaurant. I ordered imperial rolls, garlic noodles with vegetables, beef and garlic noodles and thai ice tea. When the food was delivered everything smelled delicious. The noodles was great and not too garlicky. The beef was soft and tender. When i tried the imperial rolls there was a hair in it. Yuck! Kinda loss my appetite but was so hungry I skipped the rolls and ate the rest of the food. This is why this restaurant got 3 stars. It's kinda gross to have someone's hair in your food. Will I order again from this restaurant? I'm going to take a pass right now but maybe in the future I will. read more

If you had asked me before my most recent order, I would have given Perilla in the Haight a 4 or 4.5 stars. Their five spice chicken and garlic noodles is tasty and my go to side is some of their imperial rolls. I recently introduced friends to this neighbourhood spot. I can no longer do that after my DoorDash order last night. Everyone in my party who had the five spice chicken had intestinal issues and I personally got food posioning. While I can overlook a lot of things, this terrible experience cancels out any good I previously had to say about this restaurant. For a simple individual, the name of the restaurant sounds a bit trendy. At least the name does. But when you walk in it is not really, especially along the lengthy Haight Street corridor where majority of the businesess are casual and laid back. There are also some good restaurants and businesses too. Alnd you thought that Haight/Ashbury is all about the Summer of Love. "Rock on, dude!" This Vietnamese restaurant is operated by Cantonese speaking people. And these cats can make some good authentic Vietnamese dishes. I was here for an early dinner with the restaurant being quiet. You place your order through the cashier. Looking at the extensive menu posted on the wall and behind the cashier and right below the kitchen, every dish looked and sounds so good. After a lengthy self-debate, I ordered the Five-spiced chicken over garlic noodles. For $12.50, the chicken was marinaded and spiced with five different kind of spices. The chicken was moist, grilled very nicely and not overly burnt. I had garlic noodles from many restaurants, but this restaurant's version was very subtle with a perfect of garlic. The pasta was also cooked al' dente style, which I liked and strongly preferred in my pasta dishes. The restaurant also served bottled beers. I also added San Francisco's own Anchor Steam's "Go West" IPA for $6.00. This is a really good brew with my meal. Take outs, meal pick-ups and deliveries are also available and very popular with various ride-services doing deliveries. Despite the median rating, I really had a blast here. Really sad because I used to really like this place because of the garlic noodles. The stars you do get is for the garlic noodles. We ordered the chicken salad and pho as well. Pho isn't anything to write home about. The garlic noodles with chicken was good but all the chicken in all our dishes were super dry. Like dry and hard. Like hurting my esophagus on its way down, hard. One of the saddest thing is our salad was bitter. I thought it was just the cucumber and avoided it but something in there was bitter. It's sad because it's just a salad. It was supposed to bring me the freshness in the piles of meat we were gonna eat. I feel like maybe some of the basic prep work was skipped. I've been to Perilla several times, this location and the one on Mission St. and this location consistently fails to provide quality food. I had just eaten at the Mission location last week and was craving more garlic noodles and beef after work. However, the Mission St. location closes at 3 pm. Huge bummer because it's in a great, convenient location. Anyways, decided to go to the Haight location because I'd been there before and hoped that the food would taste similar-ish. Boy was I wrong. Not sure if management has changed or if the food had been sitting around for a long time but the food was straight up cold. Not even warm. AND the portion of meat was much less than the other location. The garlic noodles were barely flavored and the meat was not flavorful (as it's supposed to be). :( paid $15 and spent 20 minutes driving for meager portions and bland food. Definitely won't be returning to this location. Save your money for the other locations or for a better meal elsewhere. read more

This place was so busy when I got there with takeout orders but they were so friendly, serve large portions and it was the perfect way to end my Friday. The beef was perfectly seasoned and tender served with the homemade garlic noodles. Papaya salad with shrimp is light and fresh with a perfectly paired sauce. This restaurant is never crowded and you get your food quickly, so I like to come here once in a while for a quick dinner. Staff is nice and the place is clean. My boyfriend and I have tried the garlic noodles with five spice chicken, imperial rolls, fresh rolls with veggie and shrimp fresh rolls. The garlic noodles are good, a little bit oily but really tasty. The five spice chicken is ok, some bits are crunchy which I liked. For the imperial rolls, they misunderstood that we wanted it along the garlic noodles (smaller portion for a smaller price) so we got the full order. I don't really like fried rolls and those were no exception. I feel like I never know what goes inside and the greasiness annoys me. The fresh rolls, on the other hand, are fresh, crunchy and tasty. Not the best ones I've had but good! The home sauce that comes with them is great too, a little bit sweet. I will come back to this place for a quick and simple dinner. read more

I didn't even eat the chicken it was so bad. The garlic noodles were dry AF and bland. And they were the best part of the meal! Also had the Imperial rolls. I have never before had an order of rolls that I didn't finish. Like I love a good crispy roll. These were soggy and bland. And the sauce they served to dip it in added nothing to them. Simple and fresh. I get the shrimp spring rolls - crisp lettuce, mint and soft vermicelli noodles with delicious shrimp. So good with the peanut sauce it comes with (I add hot sauce and plum sauce too!). I get the BBQ pork chop with garlic noodles. I usually add a cup of broth. This broth is simple but packs a lot of flavor. I really enjoy soups and broths and it's just the right add on. The pork chops are full of flavor, they give two large thin cut chops! The garlic noodles are chewy and garlicky!! So yummmmmy. It is a lot of food and I always have leftover (which I'm so happy about). I feel like this place is under rated, it's really quite good. Got a Groupon deal to try this place out, & hey, it ain't bad at all! We got the chicken cabbage salad, some grilled pork fresh rolls, chicken & pork with garlic noodles, & added crispy veggie rolls & the imperial rolls to the noodle orders. Those garlic noodles are cooked well - mildly garlic-butter flavoured without dripping in grease. The chicken & the pork we ordered with our noodles are generously portioned & deeply marinated (we preferred the texture of the chicken over the pork). The real star of our meal had to be the imperial rolls. They were crisp, not greasy, packed with a very delicious filling of ground pork, taro, & veggies. The next time we're back, we're getting a full order of the imperial rolls, for sure! read more

I was a little disappointed that this place did mot have a garlic noodle, meat, and eggroll combo like Irving does. I did think it was cool that you could order the garlic noodles with curry chicken though. The curry chicken was good, but the pieces of chicken were really big and felt a little overwhelming towards the end. Can be a bit of a challenge to find parking here, but pretty much the same as Irving. I'll definitely come back to try more of the dishes. We usually call in our order and the woman who usually staffs the front is amazing. Always cheerful and friendly even when the rush is on. Grilled pork with vermicelli is my standard. #27/2016 I've enjoyed Perilla's addictive 5-spice chicken and garlic noodles for years: Juicy, flavorful, succulent slices of chicken that I've tried to duplicate in my kitchen but haven't (yet!) been successful. Paired with buttery garlic noodles studded with so much minced garlic, you could walk through Golden Gate park at night and scare away vampires. The combination is truly delicious and I seem to order only that for the past few years. But, I have broken from habit or ordered a different dinner for little one and we've had the grilled prawns and vermicelli (I recall it was light on the amount of shrimp), the grilled pork and garlic noodles (very good) and had my socks knocked off by the yellow curry chicken soup, comforting on a cold and rainy day. Appetizers are just ok except for the grilled pork rolls which are very savory, especially with the vinegary dipping sauce. Extremely disappointing are Perilla's Imperial rolls. Being a Vietnamese restaurant, this classic dish should be a slam-dunk but Perilla's are anything but: Rubbery, almost chalky, as opposed to crispy-crunchy and savory, there's something really wrong with their recipe and it's wrong in both the Irving Street and Haight Street locations. Conversely, their Thai iced tea is wonderful, the perfect meal accompaniment/dessert. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars for the extra good service (both at the restaurants and for delivery) and for their 5-spice "crack" chicken. The beef was tender and not too chewy, the five spice chicken was dark meat and had a nice crispy skin. I wish I hadn't shared my chicken, because the skin was that good. Ordered takeout. The beef pho broth was superrrr tasty! But it was heavily weighed down by the way the noodles were packed - soggy and melted together. If the owners read this comment, cool down the noodles before you package them so they don't continue cooking in the packaging. You can also wrap the uncooked meat in plastic wrap (like other pho places) so the blood doesn't bleed into the noodles. Overall really good tastes, the packaging just needed revision. read more

Overall I thought the meal was just okay the chicken's seasoning was fine, but the chicken didn't have a super even cook due to the different sized pieces. Some pieces were cooked fine but some were over cooked and dry-ish. All of the chicken skin was crispy though, which was a relief. The garlic noodles were too oily, this was especially noticeable when the food cooled down a bit. I liked that there were a couple pieces of broccoli; however the broccoli was undercooked. Would I return? Unlikely. I only chose this place for takeaway due to its proximity to a jazz band event. read more
