We really wanted to like this neighborhood spot. We ordered the special crepe and pork/spring roll vermicelli bowl. They both took quite some time to come to the table because this was a one- woman shop. As time passed, the odor of uncleaned toilet permeated the space (bathroom was out of order). I also noticed that the chef/proprietor was sick - she couldn't stop sniffling while she went about preparing our meal and several takeout orders. Our dishes finally arrived. Sadly the seasoning on the pork & vermicelli was too light and uninteresting. As for the crepe, which she took so much time to prepare, it arrived burnt. We left as soon as we could. Got two vermicelli bowls after climbing nearby at Mission Cliffs. The food was fresh and very tasty, but seemed a tiny bit pricey for the serving size. Guess that's SF for you. It also took a little while to make because it's just the one lady who serves as chef and front of house. We got baited by the supposedly great score on yelp, but the food at the restaurant is not good at all. The owner of the restaurant is a sweet Asian lady, but regardless, the food is not 4.5 stars. The beef vermicelli was bland and the beef was so dry, it was like eating jerky. For this beef pho, the broth tasted like a wonton soup. This visit would be the second time I've come to this place. I ordered the beef pho the first time. Saddest bowl of pho I've ever seen in my life. It was just sliced beef, noodles, and broth. No garnish, no condiments, and no flavor whatsoever. I was working on this building today and figured I give this place the benefit of the doubt and try another dish. Ordered the pork belly kimchi pho. And once again the flavor fell short. I asked if I can have a side of duck. She bluntly replied "no" with no explanation. Ended up at Bobo's for dinner before an event at KQED around the corner. The tofu/mushroom banh mi I ordered surpassed my expectations! The baguette was crusty yet chewy and not too flaky, it was filled with a good amount of tofu, and came with a tasty mayo/butter-like spread rather than pate. The sandwich came out to around $15 and took about 20 minutes to serve - note that the restaurant may only be staffed by one person in the evenings, so service can take time. When we asked for pork belly, the lady sort of sighed and went back to check again, and said that she'd found pork. Suspicious, but it was kind of hard to communicate. I ordered Pho Beef. Strange: there's only one cut of beef available. Pho beef: First things first, the soup! Mmmm. It was cold outside and the pho soup was so satisfying. It was rich and flavorful. There was plenty of meat. Sorry, I've forgotten how the noodles were. But! I was missing the side plate of lime, jalapeños, etc. Soup had green onion, but was missing actual onions. The beef was a different cut than expected (checkout the photo). Hmm. I'd order this again just because I love soup but it was a weird experience. Maybe she felt guilty and gave us food which wasn't marinated or thawed enough? But regardless of all that, what would keep me coming is delicious food so I'm disappointed. This place is a little gem. We had the pho (roast duck, and also a tofu and mushroom) and the fresh shrimp spring rolls. Every bite was a pleasure for the senses. The spring rolls were bursting with firm crunchy lettuce and noodles and fresh tasty shrimp. The peanut sauce was just right, with fresh roasted peanuts (I normally don't even think of peanuts as "fresh" but wait until you taste them). Both pho's were perfect. A very clean but rich bone broth, with just the right level of salty and aromatic and sweet. Served with fresh chili oil, and juicy duck and noodles with the perfect consistency. The tofu was not fried, and tasted freshly made and tender. The chef is meticulous. I can't wait to try everything else on the menu. It is also in a quiet out-of-the-way but trendy part of the city near other great places like Tartine and True Laurel. read more

Located in a quiet neighborhood of the mission is a cute little Vietnamese Bistro. Parking is super easy after 5pm and on the weekends, however during work hours it might be a bit more difficult. Since I live in the neighborhood and I'm Vietnamese, it was pretty much a no brainer for me to try this place. I ordered the chicken noodle soup, chicken vermicelli bowl, and fresh spring rolls. The chicken noodle soup was NOT what I expected. It was my fault that I assumed it would be Pho which is a traditional Vietnamese soup. However, the flavor of this broth was not quite there and it had grilled pieces of chicken in it. It was far from authentic which they never claimed to be, but as a disclaimer to those who want Pho, this isn't it! The chicken vermicelli bowl was tasty and a good portion size. The spring rolls were a little overpriced however I was craving something light for lunch and this satisfied that requirement. The vermicelli was pretty tasty, good portion of well-cooked chicken (I think it was a fattier cut, like thigh). I had initially ordered the roast pork, but they were out (at noon already?). A co-worker got their shaking beef special, which looked really good (large portion of tender-looking beef chunks and hefty-looking noodles). I would try that if I come here again. I walked by when it was still under construction and the grandmother that owned it came out and told me to come back when they were open. I was excited to try a Vietnamese spot near my work and I finally had a chance to try it a week ago. I ordered the pork banh mi and it was delicious. It wasn't the usual greens that are traditionally used but the baguette they used had the most additive crunch, reminded me of the banh mi I had when I was in Paris. My coworker ordered the duck salad and said it was amazing so I will definitely be going back to try that. I imagine visiting Bobo's for lunch a lot more often. The bread was fresh and the perfect oblong vehicle for the sandwich's contents. The chicken was plentiful and flavorful. And the veggies were bright and fresh. The price was a little high for a banh mi, but rising prices are understandable at this point giving all of the challenges that small businesses are facing. Nice little neighborhood spot. I was excited for a new Vietnamese restaurant to open up nearby. Their imperial rolls are amazing- they are super crispy and packed with flavor. I recommend trying the pork vermicelli bowl with imperial rolls. Their portions are big and ingredients are fresh. The dish almost has a homemade feel to it.
