I don't drink coffee much but when I do, I drink at penny coffee roasters. As well as having incredible coffee, which started me on my coffee journey, the staff are incredible, the managers Adam and David do an amazing job to make the place feel like a warm and caring environment. Employees there are very kind and seem to take an interest in everyone who walks in the door. Recently an incident occurred that I have nothing but respect for how the staff handled. A now former regular, who I will be keeping anonymous for obvious reasons, was banned from the store for openly racist remarks and verbally harassing staff. I was not personally present for it, but that is accurate to my experience with said person. They have repeatedly made racist and classist comments and have pretty heavy handedly push their ideological views to me. After banning said customer, they proceeded to threaten and harass the staff, from what I saw in regards to the banning, the manager Adam handled it with more respect and elegance than I believed necessary. Despite his tact, she took that as an opportunity to go on a tangent of excessive profanity and slurs. I think it's very telling about the type of people who work at Penny that they value maintaining a safe and welcoming environment even in the face of bullying and harassment. I've never felt more inclined to go to penny than I do now. Thank you guys for what you do and keep up the good work. You guys are rock stars fr!! read more

I've been a loyal customer of Pennys Coffee since they opened in Azusa. Over the years, I've spent thousands of dollars here and have recommended the shop to many friends and others in the coffee community. Unfortunately, my experience with the shop changed because of repeated interactions with the store manager, Adam and the event that had just happened. I want the owners to be aware of concerns I have regarding the atmosphere created by management. On multiple occasions, I have heard Adam speak negatively about the owners and other baristas in front of customers. I have also experienced him bringing personal and political opinions into conversations while working, which I feel creates an uncomfortable/unprofessional environment. He works every Monday so I can't even sit on the only couch and drink my coffee in peace, he's always talking nonsense and forcing his personal opinions down my throat. He never stops talking, and if you try to share your opinion, he talks right over you. He has a veryyy hard time accepting viewpoints that differ from his own. He's honestly on some sort of power trip. The most concerning incident occurred recently when Adam yelled in my face while inside the coffee shop!! Then the other barista, David got involved with his encouragement during this interaction. They surrounded me and were trying to intimidate me together and at that time there were no other customers in the store, and when I tried to speak to them to tell them to stop yelling at me- they went at me harder to the point I had to literally run out of the shop bc I didn't feel safe there. It's the first time I have ever had two men corner me and yell at me- it was honestly traumatizing. After leaving, I informed David that I would never be returning. I believed that would be the end of the situation. However, David provided Adam with my personal phone number without my permission, and Adam contacted me by text after I had already left the store in an effort to intimidate me further. During that exchange, Adam also accused me of being racist. I found it completely inappropriate that my personal information was shared without my consent so that a workplace conflict could continue outside of the store. I also want to address an issue with David. Throughout my visits, you have repeatedly attempted to hug me or touch me when I came into the shop. Regardless of your intentions, this made me uncomfortable. Customers should not be touched without their consent. I also work in the business of customer service, and I understand the importance of professionalism. I would never speak negatively about my employer to customers, push personal or political views on people supporting my business, yell at a customer, or use a customer's personal information to continue a confrontation after they leave. It's disappointing because I did like this coffee shop and wanted to continue supporting it. However, my experiences with Adam and David traumatized me. I hope the owners take these concerns seriously and address them so other customers do not have similar experiences. read more

Stopped here before my sons game at the university. Parking was easy for a late Saturday morning. Service was friendly and quick. I was sad they ran out of scones but I got an almond pastry that did not disappoint. I ordered a latte with almond milk and a pump of vanilla and my husband got a drip coffee. Everything was delicious but for $18 I am not sure I would go back. The cup size we got was pretty small and even though everything was good I am not sure I can justify the extra charges for using almond milk or 1 pump of syrup. I got an iced matcha latte and my friend got a teddy graham latte. The matcha is okay; it's not too milky but the flavor is kinda weak. I personally didn't like the teddy graham latte but my friend liked it. I got a chocolate chip cookie which was really good! It's a really good place to study/work in but there are not a lot of tables so keep that in mind. When we went it was really cold inside even though it wasn't that hot outside. But the best part is that there are books for sale! A good amount of books to pick from and they're under $10. I visited Penny Coffee Roasters to get new coffee beans since I was running out. This spot is located in downtown Azusa. I went to this location at around 10:00 AM on a Saturday morning. It was moderately busy but many folks were primarily ordering and going. There were plenty of indoor seating and a few right in front. I tend to prefer dark roasts, so I decided to grab the standard issue coffee beans. I saw they also had pour over options, so I ordered one of the Ratnagiri. This was ready in about 10 minutes. I was able to grab a window seat with great natural lighting to enjoy the coffee. They have an outlet nearby, so I felt this could have been a great study spot. For parking, there is street parking available right in front. It could be a bit difficult to back out into traffic. There's also a parking structure nearby as well. I ordered the Honey Graham Specialty Coffee ($6.50 - Large - 16oz - Iced). I froze in utter wonder. It's silky, soft and releases a cuddly honey aftertaste. I felt awake and happy. One of the best coffees that I've tasted. I arrived at Penny Coffee Roasters (Azusa) on Friday (around 7:45AM). Parking is convenient because there's options. There's a hidden parking garage a few feet away with no visible time limit. There's also street parking spots across the street; its sign says, "3 Hour Parking - 6AM to 6PM - Monday to Friday." Staff is professional, welcoming, and very knowledgeable. Staff happily answered my questions with detailed responses. Staff also gave many good recommendations and explained all the shot amounts. My drink took two minutes and 43 seconds. Very quick!! If I had to nitpick, the displayed menu needs to be updated. The menu didn't match my receipt, and I informed Staff that I paid 50 cents less. Staff politely refused when I offered to pay more to match the menu price, and Staff eagerly explained that the menu needs to be updated. Staff even whispered that there's secret menu options that's not even listed on the menu. In addition, this location felt like a local community hotspot. As 8AM approached, waves of customers started to arrive. Staff welcomed many customers by name, and Staff didn't shy away. Staff also cooed and cheerily welcomed a leashed dog as its owner approached the counter to order; this location is pet friendly. As mentioned, I enjoyed the Honey Graham Specialty Coffee ($6.50 - Large - 16oz - Iced). The drink firmly woke me up while releasing a light sweetness. This coffee is a wonderful option for picky guests that dislike bitter, potent brews. The Honey Graham tasted high-quality. This brew is silky, fresh, and crisp. This chill coffee gently carries the flavor of Honey Graham Crackers. The flavor felt natural and distinct. There were moments where I wanted to just swish and savor this heavenly taste. Regarding ambiance, Penny Coffee Roasters (Azusa) is a phenomenal study/work spot. There's about seven electrical outlets. There's customer internet with password; the information is only available by asking Staff since there's no sign. There's also a self-service water station and book cabinet. There's a gender neutral restroom in the back. And the location sparkles with its clean floor, tables, and windows. Penny Coffee Roasters (Azusa) is also fairly comfortable. There's nine interior tables, and there's two outside tables. The interior is well-ventilated. There's also smooth, soft music. Overall, I had a magical experience at Penny Coffee Roasters (Azusa). It's miles better than the Glendora Public Market location. Penny Coffee Roasters (Azusa) has passion, high-quality brews, and a special connection with its community. This is a must-try. 5 out of 5. This Penny Coffee Roasters location is the heart of Downtown Azusa. I've been recently to the Glendora Public Location and wanted to check out this store front location. Upon walking in, we were greeted by the staff who was working solo making other drinks for the few customers already inside. The location is very spacious and could be a good place to work or wind down for a coffee of matcha or coffee. There's a handful of tables for seating. This location offers complimentary water, merch and coffee for sale and there mobile rack of books on display. We came in to order the Nilla Houjicha since it was hit for me at the other location. The staff was very personable and had positive energy the entire interaction. Our drink was made in no time and had the same consistently of taste and flavor as their other location. The Houjicha flavor of matcha is slowly becoming one of my favorite options. I like the smoky and toasty flavor notes of Houjicha. I'd come to Penny Coffee for one again in the near future. The Spanish latte here is hands-down the best I've ever had, and the espresso tonic is a great choice if you're into tonic water drinks. Pastries are excellent too, sourced from a bakery in Long Beach. The staff are friendly and clearly passionate about coffee. Special shoutout to David for always making the visit great. Plenty of seating and free WiFi make it perfect for studying or getting work done, and it's clearly a favorite with APU students too. Only minor note: a few of the chairs were a bit wobbly, but that didn't take away from the experience at all. I'll definitely keep coming back! read more

I came to Penny coffee roasters after recognizing the coffee I really enjoy from Colossus in Long beach. Penny coffee is so delicious. I got a latte with the tiramisu cold foam and the foam was perfectly creamy and had the right amount of sweetness. We also tried their match latte which was also very tasty. Really like this location over their Glendora one, if you're looking for a nice space to maybe get some work done it's pretty quiet most days. The creativity here when it comes to their seasonal menus though is always top tier. It reminded me of Old Town Monrovia. Penny Coffee Roasters is new to the area, so we were here to check it out. We walked into the sound of Depeche Mode playing in the background and a friendly greeting from barista Paul. She was an absolute doll. We all know that photos of coffee beverages are better in mugs as opposed to paper cups. Unfortunately, no mugs here. Leonard got a Pour Over in hopes of receiving a set up for better pics. I was running on little sleep, so an Americano was sorely needed. Unlike the Glendora location, this place is a sit-down café, so Leonard and I grabbed a table and spent the next 90 minutes catching up on the chisme. PCR roast their beans inhouse but for some reason my Americano tasted bitter. Maybe it was an off day for the roast or, as coffee afficionado Sam B suggested, it could have been a result of the espresso pull. Aside from that, the service was great, the atmosphere is nice, the pastries looked good, the 80's playlist was great, and Leonard enjoyed his pour over. I'd give it another chance. read more

First time trying this location! I have had penny roasters in the Glendora eatery location. My latte was great. I really do believe my barista knows their craft! I think the downside was like there was only one person taking orders and making so many drinks. It did take awhile even know it was during slow time. The coffee shop itself was very spacious and had a lot of tables. Good for studying or hanging out. The matcha latte was good. They use ceremonial matcha and whisk it too! The second location for Penny Coffee has soft opened finally! They are on a limited menu at this time focusing on espresso-based drinks and lattes until their grand opening later this month. I stopped by earlier and got an espresso and matcha latte and both were delicious! The shop itself is quite barebones right now with seating available on the side but not much else right now but they are working on it over the next few weeks until they open. The inside is well-lit and gets plenty of sunlight from the huge windows and it is quite spacious overall. Parking is readily available on the street or in the parking structure nearby. My mom and I love exploring great coffee shops together, and since I just moved to the area, we have a new town to explore! I yelped and found Penny Coffee Roasters in the heart of downtown Azusa and it looked like they just opened in February of this year. I love supporting local coffee places, and I had a great feeling about it, and I'm happy to say - the place is mom-approved and indeed, a coffee shop to return to time and time again. We enjoyed a Hot Americano w/ cream and sugar on the side, an iced Matcha, light on the sugar, with almond milk, a Ham & Cheese Croissant, and a blueberry donut. My mom was able to grab a cute table by the window, with a view of the beautiful downtown Azusa, to our left, while we enjoyed catching up with our coffee and matcha drinks on a Saturday. They have indoor and outdoor seating with huge plants (it is always a bonus if there are plants). As the trusty photographer daughter I am, we even got to snap some cute pictures. My mom loved her Americano, especially their cream. I 100% will tell everyone that the matcha here is top-notch, ceremonial grade, so I definitely would recommend it to matcha-lovers like me to give it a try. Their ham & cheese croissant is *chefs kiss* delicious - with a side of melted crunchy cheese if you're into those lil bits like me. Their blueberry donut will be the death of my summer abs, but honestly its totally worth it since it's the perfect blend between a blueberry cake and a glazed donut, and just plain delicious. Just try it. The two staff members I got to talk to are so friendly and have a great smile to match. They look like they really have fun and love what they do, and just loved being around people. #155 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. I didn't realize Penny Coffee Roasters was the same coffeeshop as the one in Glendora Public Market. Had I known, I probably would have skipped this one altogether. Anyways, I ordered two drinks - the Honey Graham and the Strawberry Dreams. The honey graham is a honey and cinnamon oat milk latte, while the strawberry dreams is a strawberry coconut matcha latte from the seasonal menu. Both drinks were lackluster - neither the espresso nor the flavor stood out in the latte, while the matcha drink tasted watered down. Azusa quietly has a real one. I've been on Yelp for over a decade, drink coffee all over SoCal (from hole-in-the-wall to high-end), and I'm not "Elite"... but I do know good coffee when I taste it. And this place qualifies. Had the champurrado latte and it was excellent -- smooth, balanced, and actually tastes good and not overly milky and Not overly sweet, not burnt, not trying too hard. Just well-executed. The space is clean, calm, and feels intentional -- which already puts it ahead of most spots in the San Gabriel Valley. Outside of a few places in Pasadena, real specialty coffee is rare around here, so this was a pleasant surprise. They also sell quality beans to go (huge plus), and the staff is friendly enough -- maybe a little edge here and there, but that's basically part of the modern coffee shop experience at this point. I came for the coffee anyway. Bottom line: this is one of the very few places in the area actually doing it right. I'll happily keep coming back to -- Elite badge or not. read more
