In the 2003 Korean film Oldboy, the protagonist Oh Dae Su is fed a steady diet of fried mandoo, a food that he detests the most, while he's imprisoned. After his release, he visits various restaurants serving the dish to get clues and determine where he was held captive. I don't know too many people like Oh Dae Su, that hates mandoo. But, I also don't know anyone that's been locked up in a room for that many years either. Still, I like mandoo in all forms and shapes, especially the Wang Mandoo (King Dumplings). Peking Dumpling sells just that and they're located inside the Hannam Chain Supermarket on Olympic Blvd in Koreatown. It's been there for years and much to my surprise, really untouched, based on 2 lone YELP reviews written a couple years back. The Wang Mandoo is decently sized, yet the bun is more fragile and thin. Less carbs, but the filling is still very tasty. It's about the size of my fist, so it's not too big. With less dough, it's not as thick, but I actually like that. Everything, is made in house, as the ladies were making them on the spot, during my visit. The Meat and Vegetable are both $6 per 6 dumplings, which is not bad for a dollar each. Honestly, these days I'm favoring the Vegetable Wang Mandoo at these types of places. They just taste better. I used to pass on the veggie option, but not anymore. If possible, Soy Sauce and Pickled Radish on the side would also be swell. Peking Dumpling also sells Vegetable Dumplings with barley mixed into the bun. It's supposed to be healthier for a buck more. The ones filled with Red Bean are also available as well, including regular Barley Bread and Corn Bread. Interesting, as I'm curious as to how the plain bread tastes like. They come in a pack of six for $3. One more awesome thing, if you like Jajangmyeon Sauce, you can get some for $4. With all this variety, doesn't this warrant a visit, especially if you're in the area?

Shoutout to the girl working that Saturday who answered all my questions about the different filled mochi flavors. The texture is soooo soft and chewy unlikely the weird powdery texture of many other store bought mochi. My favorite was definitely the ichigo daifuku, although I do wish it came with a whole strawberry instead of just a small piece because the bite with strawberry was AMAZING. It's been sitting on my saved list for a while, and honestly, this turned out to be the perfect opportunity. The space itself is bright, clean, and welcoming with warm woody tones throughout. Casual setup where you order at the counter and they bring the food out to you. I had already looked through the menu beforehand, so the real challenge was narrowing down what to order for one person. I failed at that... and I'm very happy I did. Started with the Pig Ear Salad 滷豬耳朵. Braised thin sliced pig ears dressed with soy sauce, chili oil, sesame oil, scallion, and cilantro. OMG. So good. Tender, flavorful, perfectly braised, with that satisfying chewy texture done right. Also got the Fried Peanut Salad 五味花生 with garlic, cilantro, scallions, vinegar, and Thai chili. Super crunchy, bright, refreshing, and honestly addicting. I added a cup of the Hot & Sour Soup 酸辣湯 too. Organic tofu, beech mushroom, carrot, bamboo, woodear mushroom, and egg. Super comforting with a really balanced tang and peppery heat. Not overly thick or heavy like a lot of Americanized versions can be. Exactly the kind of soup you want during a long travel day. For noodles, I ordered the Dan Dan Noodles 擔擔麵. Sesame-peanut sauce, cucumber, cilantro, crushed peanuts. Delicious on its own already, but I ended up adding some of the fried peanuts from the salad into the noodles and it became even better. Then the Three Cup Chicken 三杯雞 with sesame oil, soy sauce, rice wine, and Thai basil. I do wish it had a little more wok hei, but overall the flavor was still really comforting and savory. Extremely good with rice. Had a glass of Gewürztraminer alongside everything, which paired surprisingly well with the spice and aromatics. Their wine list leans more organic / natural wine focused, which felt very LA in a good way. Ended up sitting at a high top next to one of the managers and had a great conversation throughout the meal. She ended up hooking me up with the Traditional Shaved Ice 傳統刨冰 with grass jelly, red bean, boba, sweet potato balls, taro balls, brown sugar syrup, and condensed milk. I was already planning to order it anyway, and wow... I finished the entire thing. The brown sugar syrup was incredibly fragrant. Packed the leftovers to-go, and that ended up becoming my dinner after landing in San Francisco later that evening. Flight cancellation somehow turned into a really great food day.

Most of the products were displayed in big bulk cases, clearly labeled for easy browsing. The man working the grocery was friendly, helpful, and efficient. He got Mike what he needed and bagged it up for him right away. I love Mexican food and fantasize about making moles at home now and then, but like, my lunch today was a soup that came out of a pantry bag and a frozen Tupperware of brown rice that my mom gave me in early 2018. I finally was able to check it off, thanks to a hotel offer with a dining credit. Dahlia is the gorgeous petite space behind the larger ground floor restaurant space now called Cabrillo (formerly Caldo Verde). Dahlia opened as a bespoke cocktail lounge, then began to offer tea. Now it's just tea. There are five 2-tops and two 4-top tables. All food and beverage venues at the Proper used to be under the auspices of famed chef Suzanne Goin and her business partner/sommelier Caroline Styne. They are no longer affiliated with the Proper, but many of their dishes/contributions remain. The last named vestige of them is on the tea menu, "Suzanne's Deviled-Egg Sandwich". The tea menu has several options: Classic, with a seasonal mocktail, or with different champagnes. I opted for the Classic experience, because the mocktail had mocha, not my fave. Server Lluvia was clearly a Dahlia veteran; she offered a tea-smelling of all the teas that interested me as well as crowd favourites. I ultimately chose one of these faves, Mad Hatter's Tea Party, which had passionfruit and vanilla. I declined milk/cream, but did get lemon. There were rock sugar sticks on the table. It seems the selection of tea sandwiches and sweet treats changes every so often, although the vanilla bean scone, dried currant scone, Devonshire cream and apricot orange jam seem like constants. The sandwich selection at my visit were: cucumber, crab/creme fraiche, beet hummus on pita, smoked salmon and Suzanne's deviled egg. All were delish, the beet, crab and deviled egg especially. The sweet treats were: orange fig butter cookie, spiced apple brown butter crumble, cranberry frangipane hand pie, chocolate mocha macaron, pumpkin madeleine, plus the 2 scones. All were excellent. There were no leftovers. A bit pricey, but a relaxing and lovely experience. The room was not crowded when I visited, adding to the calmness of my visit.

There were no reservations available near 7:00, our preferred time, so we decided to try our luck walking in. We were pleased to find free lot parking and a light crowd, and got a table for four, no problem. It was a high top near the door, probably not the best table in the house, but it suited our purposes just fine. The restaurant was charming, cute and small with a European wine bar by way of Echo Park vibe. (The location is not what I tend to think of as Echo Park, but if you've been to the Clark Street, it's on that same stretch.) I guess it's a sandwich shop by day and an elegant bistro by night. It must be at least a little trendy because at one point a very made-up woman came in and recorded footage of the dining room on her phone (please tell me if you see me on TikTok). Service was great. We had a helpful, handsome waiter (another sign this is a trendy spot) who talked movies with us and attended to all our needs. We got a couple bottles of a French red blend, the Domaine La Grange Tiphaine Touraine "Ad Libitum," and enjoyed a fun, relaxing dinner. The menu was short, everything made to share, and we got eight of the twelve dishes (I'm counting the bread and accompaniments as one). Portions were on the small side, but no one left hungry, and the food was delicious. The bread was not free, but it was fantastic. Fresh Clark Street baguette, presumably from the bakery next door. We ordered two and added the cultured butter and chicken liver. The butter was rich, creamy, and yellow, and the liver might have been the best dish of the night. It was velvety and flavorful, finished with scallion, pickled onion, and some kind of jammy, vinegary sauce. The bluefin tuna crudo was firm and silky, served with blood orange, knob onion, and Fresno chile. The ricotta dumplings made a warm, rustic dish, soft and delicate in a dark broth with morel, English pea, shaved cacciocavallo cheese, and Madeira. We had a nice snap pea and avocado salad with tangerine, endive, and buttermilk, and two excellent vegetable dishes from the sidesy part of the menu. Fried broccolini came with green chile, honey, yogurt, and mint; grilled asparagus with pistachio, dukkah, and tahini. On the more substantial side, the rigatoni was quite good, doughy pasta with short rib, Bloomsdale spinach, Banyuls (a fortified wine), and pecorino. And the vermillion rock cod was rock solid, a beautifully cooked piece of fish served with cucumber, lime, pepita, and zhoug. We had a lovely time at this new restaurant and I'd be happy to go back, both for dinner and for the lunchtime sandwiches, which look outstanding. Henrietta is an elegant little place, well worth visiting for a leisurely night out.

Because it is in Koreatown, we expected more of a Korean or Asian-style night market vibe with themed booths, street-style alleys, and the kind of food atmosphere you usually associate with that part of LA. Instead, it turned out to be a general street-food market with mixed vendors. It was not bad, just very different from what we expected. Most of my family ordered hibachi bowls. The flavor was good, but the meat portions were on the small side. One of my sons got sushi from a different booth. I tried skewers and a baked potato from other vendors. The food was decent overall, but not something that feels worth dealing with LA weekend traffic for. Parking is across the street and can get chaotic, especially if you are not used to downtown LA parking. Between the traffic, the parking situation, and the difference between what social media shows and what the night market actually is, I would call the experience a 3.5. Since Yelp does not allow half stars, I am giving it a 3. If you are already in the area, it is a fun place to walk around and try different things. I just would not go expecting a Korean-style night market experience
