Tuna Kimbap (5/5)
Phillip T.

The owners are so nice and kind. I got the tuna kimbap, so freakin good. The rice and banchan inside is perfectly cooked, and the tuna has a perfect balance between being creamy but still staying present. Will be coming back to try the other kimbap.

Menu. Love the beef.

This small hole in the wall inside the Korea mart store is amazing. They have like 12 things but so yummy. My favorite is the pork dumplings and that yummy sauce. Their glass noodles are amazing as well. They have kimbap which is way better than a ca roll. The soups are good. I have had almost everything and can say you won't be disappointed. Yummy!!!

Tasty restaurant in a grocery store. Very low key and small, has fresh tuna kimbap which tasted good. Yukejang is also good and not overly spicy.

fish cake kimbap

My rating is mostly for the kimbap, which I think is their specialty. This shop is inside of HK Market so you'll have to enter thru the market entrance even if you're not going to the market. Kimbap - had the sausage, fish cake, and beef kimbaps. The rice to other filling ratio is perfect, they're generous with the meats and veggies. The flavoring is good and the kimbaps are wrapped well. You definitely get value for your money as each box is filled with 3 rolls while other spots give you 1-2 for the same price. They have a good variety of main fillings too (the burdock one is near the register and doesn't have a sign like the others). Tteokbokki/toppokki - not the best tteokbokki in Ktown but I bought it here for convenience and its still tasty to dip kimbap in the sauce. The ddeok or rice cake is cooked unevenly - some pieces were a bit overcooked and some under (I prefer it under since it sits in warm sauce). The sauce is too watery and isn't savory. Spice level was ok, could be more spicey for me. They give you a lot of sauce but I think the intent is for you to dip the kimbap. There was sufficient ddeok and fish cake. Fried dumplings/gun mandu - highly recommended!! Perfectly crispy and stays crispy even after a few hours. The filling of pork and green onions is super savory, not too salty. I like dipping it in the sauce (soy sauce and vinegar mix) but the mandu is flavorful enough you don't really need to dip. Support this ma and pop shop!

For right now this is a solid 2.5 rounded to 3 stars for the friendliness of the owners. Just so you know... This is located inside the HK Supermarket. I can't really say if the other dishes are good or not. I can only judge on the tteokbokki that I ordered. All I have to say is that it was a huge disappointment. It ended up being more soupy which I would've been ok with as the broth was very flavorful and had a decent amount of heat. But the rice cakes...tteok... Was mushy. Very very mushy. #epicfail When I order tteokbokki, I expect the rice cake to be nice and chewy and these were so mushy that you could've smeared the rice cakes. Not good eats at all. I will never order this item again from here. BUT on the good side... The other dishes that I saw other customers eating looked really yummy! So I'll definitely be back to try these other dishes. And the kicker to this entire experience... The owners were so nice! Very friendly and very engaging. Says alot about a business when the owner is that nice. Loved it! :)

Love their spicy rice cake and fried black seaweed with glass Noodle. And of course their 7 different kinds of kimbap! The taste is always the same. Definitely recommend what I've mentioned.

Spicy Stir Fried Squid only $ 10!!!!

This place is a diamond in a field of diamonds. What I mean by that is that even with all the great food in Koreatown this place stands out! I used to come here for some really great king sized dumplings that they have discontinued sadly. Now I come for their awesome Spicy Stir Fried Squid. The meal is delicious, filling and cheap. You get a soup, white rice, banchan and the entree! It used to be really, really cheap but the price has gone up. Another reviewer mentioned the food is spicy and she is right. I hate spicy food yet I still enjoy their Spicy Stir Fried Squid! It's just that good! This restaurant is inside the Han Kook Market. It is pretty basic as you might expect. They have a few tables. They have their menu posted on a wall in big pictures. You can see what the dish looks like and the price is adjacent to the picture. Parking is no issue since the Han Kook Market has a big parking lot. What can I do without here? I can see no defects here! What makes Wool Um Ma stand out? The value! You truly get a delicious cheap meal here! Five stars! This place is really, really ridiculously good!

The soup was simply delicious with a smooth velvety texture and flavor. The ramen was so good (freshly made every day) in its finest al dente texture with a nice large diameter. Rare in The OC. The rib meat can be removed with chopsticks ! And the most tenderness of protein. The kimchi cabbage and radishes are so delicious. Spicy but not kickass (ok for me) biting into sweetness I've never tasted anywhere in the world that serves K-ramen. Service is most excellent as they immediately greet you, seat you, menu, then, the table top appetizers are served. I believe the owner or chef brought the entrees. That's different! He came out later to see how everything was! As I tried to visit him in the kitchen to compliment, he's gone! Inside has plenty of seating with booths on one side and bench seats on the other with chair seated tables in the middle. Highly recommend this place. Competitively priced. Nothing took away from the experience.

However, I was disappointed by their policy. The radish salad (Muchae) served with the pork jowl was very small compared to the portion of the meat. When we asked for a little more, we were told it would cost an extra $5. We spent around $150 including tip, so charging $5 for a basic radish side dish felt unreasonable, especially since most other places provide this as a complimentary refill. It's not about the $5 itself, but it left a bad impression. Also, regarding the service, the server was polite and even asked us first if we needed more radish water kimchi (Yeolmu), but they completely forgot to bring it, probably because they were too busy. Overall, the food is good and the staff is kind, but the stingy side dish policy and the forgotten order made the experience less satisfying. 3 stars.

They've mastered the art of keeping Korean flavors while dropping in modern twists that totally elevate every dish. The braised galbi served on a spread of mashed potatoes with various mushrooms is a total masterpiece. The zabuton is also one of my favorites if you like an asado and plenty of garlic. The golden chicken nuggets with seaweed powder on top are so perfectly crispy and packed with flavor. I have to admit the corn cheese egg rolls are probably my favorite thing on the menu, something as simple like a mozzarella stick type of appetizer just really hits it for me. And one of my favorite cocktails of all time. The staff is always so nice every time. They're attentive and honest with us if we are over-ordering. The ambiance is elite, even after renovation. Danbi is an absolute gem in Ktown. It's the perfect spot show off the city to out-of-town guests or for an incredible night out. 10/10 recommend!

We got the large bossam platter, kimchi jeon, bindae tteok, and mandoo guk. There was 5 of us and it was a lot of food. We had quite a bit of leftovers. Bossam platter was great, the meat was tender. I really enjoyed eating it with the radish wrap. It didn't feel greasy at all. Paired with the mandoo guk to take a break from bossam was the best. Service wise, we did hit the button for a server and it took a bit for them to come help us. It was a bit busy and we were in no rush. Service was never that superb here, as the servers always looked busy and they're hard to flag down. Today was a busy night for them as well, we came at peak dinner time, but by 20 mins into our dinner, quite a few tables had cleared up. It seemed like they only had 2 servers on the floor - same ones I see when we come in for lunch. The taller gentleman is usually nicer and more accommodating. For a group of 6 people, we got so little banchan. Usually when I go to a Korean restaurant with more than 5 people, we usually get 2 sets of banchan for each side of the table. With 6 people, 4 guys, we ran out of banchan almost immediately. Some of my friends' water cups stayed empty unless we asked for more. Never once did either of the servers check on our table. Every time we needed something, we had to flag them down or go up to the register to ask. Things we asked for were all reasonable: 1st round: - water refill 2nd round: - water refill - banchan refill - another order of soju - sharing bowls for the soup When the other server had brought over the bowls for the soup, he slid it against my soju cup and it spilled on the table and my lap. He noticed it too even turned around, but didn't offer any napkins. Our water refill, banchan AND the bottle of soju never came. I had to get up and ask for extra napkins to wipe the table/my jeans. My friends went almost the entire meal w.o water - at one point, it was SO hard to find & flag them down. We gave up on trying to get more banchan & soju, finally got water refill at the end, had to flag down for check, had to go up to the register to have them close the check, by this time the restaurant was maybe 50-60% empty. I'm giving them a higher rating because this is still my favorite bossam and doenjjang jjigae. However, very bummed to have experienced such an unpleasant service.

I dropped by for lunch around noon on a Saturday and was so happy to be seated right away. Our party was a table for 5. Although half of our party was running late, the staff allowed us to be seated and didn't rush us to order. It was a refreshing experience, especially in koreatown - and a busy restaurant at that. We ordered the banchan set for 3 and 2 mains - Galbi and corvina. The banchan came with a variety of side dishes - that are refilled if you need more. The galbi was tender, flavorful, and cooked perfectly, while the corvina was equally delicious and a nice addition to the table. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were incredibly generous. Overall, Borit Gorae continues to deliver on both quality and quantity. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Koreatown, and I'll be back again!

Honestly, this was such a crazy filling meal that we ended up skipping dinner and just having late night snacks at like 11 pm because of how full we were after eating here at 1:00 pm. I'm vegetarian, my 3 other friends are all omnivores so we got the set for 3 and then ordered 1 meat dish for them to share and even then there was a CRAZY amt of food. There is such a large variety of banchan + 2 soups (1 soybean paste soup or doenjang jjigae and the other a chicken soup). The banchan tasted fresh, healthy, and delicious overall. You can also ask for rice refills as your meal progresses in case you get low in comparison to the sides. Oh, and I almost forgot, they also gave us jeon/small pancakes which were deeelish. My friends loved their meat dish as well so all in all very happy and absolutely worth the price imo. We were all so stuffed by the end and just as we thought we were done, they gave us two different desserts and I definitely KO'ed on the spot. The interior is warm, inviting, and stylistically decorated with a lot of Korean touches. The center of the restaurant also has a variety of takeout containers so you don't need to feel like you're inhaling all the food at once and can take things to go. Absolutely swing by Borit Gogae if you are in the area!

If you're searching for some of the city's best pork, then those in the know will bring up Ham Ji Park. For 2 decades, generous platters of pork ribs and pork neck stew decked every table. Now, our Korean friends lament the loss of their favorite pork joint in the city. The Koreatown proper location is located in the Royal Plaza mini-mall, just a few blocks off bustling Wilshire. Discounted parking is available in a lot across the street from the Chevron gas station. From the street, the entrance is flanked by potted plants and an enclosed street-ery. Inside, stainless steel chairs are pressed up against wooden tables, each outfitted with a metal grill. Oppressive fluorescent lighting shines down on the stone grey walls, which are left undecorated apart from a few flatscreens. Multi-lingual chatter blends with the sizzle of platters. I visited with some friends for a weeknight dinner, and about half of the tables were occupied. We shared a spread of grilled platters and sizzling soups. The meal began with a carafe of barley tea and a mostly standard spread of banchan. Across our food, the best dish was the signature Charbroiled Pork Spare Rib. The ribs were flavorful without feeling gamey, and the meat was complemented by sweet caramelized onions. The pork ribs handily outdid the good-not-great Charbroiled Beef Short Rib. Lastly, the Milt and Cod Rose with Vegetables stew was fishy and briny, appropriately flavored for the Korean palate. The service was appropriately attentive, although I would've appreciated more intentional refills of our banchan ramikens. The rib plates cost upward of $35 each, while the soup was just under $30. The portions were hearty; a single entree platter could reasonably feed 2 moderately hungry bellies. It's a shame to hear that Ham Ji Park has closed; I'm kicking myself for not trying their pork neck stew earlier.
