Here with a group of coworkers and we all thought out meal was spectacular. I had the soft shell crab special and it was very nice. I would have preferred breaded and fried opposed to pan fried (it was served exactly as described- although abit on the oily side) but it was delicious. The salads were great. The service was on point. The beer selection was very good. Walking in you can tell this is clearly a seafood restaurant as well as selling seafood uncooked, retail to the public. Often when you walk into a seafood shop, you get hit in the face with a seafood smell, which isn't always appealing. None of that here. The fish was fresh, well prepared with friendly competent service. You can tell this is a place that caters to the locals (I love that). Pleasantly surprised in Ft Wayne. Service was incredibly slow and after waiting for 1.5 hrs to be served, we had to bounce due to prior bday celebratory obligations. Would never go back. 1) They may have the worst service in Fort Wayne. McDonalds has better service than this place. Terrible....I ordered fresh shucked oysters and king crab. The oysters were sticky so I'm assuming they had been sitting out for quite some time and the king crab was stuck in the shell like they were cooked then cooked again, I had a hard time getting butter for them. My date ordered giant shrimp with pasta...another disappointment. These big beautiful shrimp was served on top of tasty pasta but the shrimp had no flavor, it again tasted like it was cooked once then reheated as they needed it. I recently moved back to Fort Wayne from LA. Paula's used to be my favorite place to take guests. We went last night for a birthday celebration and I was so disappointed. My wine glass was brought to the table with some one else's lipstick still on the rim. My salad came with cheese that I specifically asked to be removed when I ordered. The scallops weren't cooked all the way through and a member of our party ordered the mashed potatoes and they were almost certainly from a box. I was so embarrassed that I had talked up the restaurant so much and it was such a disappointment. Sadly, I doubt we will be back. read more

I am a fan of fish. I'm from England, a place where you can get fish straight from the boat easily, fish markets and fishmongers are plentiful. So, for me, moving to Fort Wayne was a huge disappointment on the seafood front. I was told to go to Red Lobster, the seafood equivalent of McDonald's, and was horribly underwhelmed. Then I found Paula's. They sell real fish! They actually know how to cook it. It has great, interesting decor, as you walk in the door you are faced with the fish counter, just to really hammer home, "Hey Look, we really do have fish." Now, I really am a minimalist and traditionalist when it comes to seafood preparation, so I didn't agree with the whole menu (but then, why should I? That's why they have a varied menu) but was still very impressed. We had the crab cakes and the beer steamed shellfish mix to start, and both were amazing. Plenty of crab in the cake, and delicious broth with the shellfish. The waitress was friendly and attentive, not obtrusive. She recommended the days specials and was able to describe everything very well. I had the combo platter as an entree, crab cake (yes, I wanted another one to myself), scallops and almond walleye. The scallops were good, nice sear, not over cooked, but the walleye wasn't all I expected. A little bland, and just, missing something. My wife had the Chef's special of the day, but I don't remember what it was, to busy stuffing crab in my face I suppose. She liked it very much though. The only thing I didn't like, and I'm guessing this was just bad luck, was the table we were assigned. First, it was way too small and had me facing an unadorned wall, had the table been placed at an angle allowing us to sit to the corners - instead of directly across- like most fine dining restaurants it would have been fine. Second, we happened to get stuck next to the real loud group of 8 girls celebrating a birthday party. We were sat toward the bar section, but i would have much rather been in the main restaurant area. I had reserved a table a week in advance, so I feel I should have been in the main area. I love this place! The vibe is very beach and a bit eclectic. So definitely comfortable for anyone, and this is made apparent by the range of dress that is seeing on the patrons anything from t's and jeans to full business suit. I have tried a couple of things one special, that was fantastic very earthy (although I did find a bone or two...) VERY disappointed that they have a website but never get their dinner specials up until after 4PM. Even calling in to get it, you are told that is will be somewhere between 4-4:30PM before they will be ready. EXCUSE ME? Dinner service starts at 5PM and the specials aren't published YET. Not a major issue for locals but for those of us who would drive 90 minutes one way, it can be. The salad for starter was good along with the cream brûlée. I did think $7.00 for a thin dish of pudding was a little over the top, but if you come here, just open up your wallet, your here for a nice meal and those cost. We'd heard many good things about Paula's so we decided to give it a shot. I love the location, which is situated near some older classy-looking homes. The decor of the restaurant is nice and makes me think of seafood. There is also a seafood market there where you can buy all kinds of yummy goodies. We were seated near the bar, which was fine except they had MSN on the television. I really wish businesses would turn their televisions away from news channels. Put it on something less depressing. Anyhow, our waitress was really nice and had our drink orders in no time. The first thing I want to mention is the bread and butter they put on the table. The butter was amazing. I am not sure what they do to it, but it was the best butter I think i've ever had. For an appetizer I ordered one of the crab cakes since they are known for them. It was absolutely amazing, especially with the jalapeno tartar sauce. It was a tad pricey for just 1 crab cake, but worth it. I also had a cup of the clam chowder and loved it as well. It was delectable. For my main meal I ordered the fish and chips. Absolutely delicious. No complaints whatsoever. Originally, I was going to give this place 3 stars instead of 4. "But why, Fred? You have basically praised this place up and down, bro." The reason is because of my wife's meal. She ordered a steak (she isn't a huge fan of seafood). And before anyone says, "Well, don't order a steak at a seafood place." I'll head them off at the pass by saying, don't put something on the menu if you don't intend to cook it as best as you can. This is not what I think Paula's intended, i'm sure it was just an off night for whoever cooked it, but it was not cooked medium at all. In fact it "moo'd" when they sat the plate down (obvious exaggeration). She asked to get it fired again to cook it more and it took a while. In fact, I was practically done with my meal by the time the steak came back, and we just had it wrapped to go. My food was so good that I had to give it 4 stars despite "Steakgate".
