The establishment is a very small mom and pop shop with a few tables for indoor dining. They also even sell lottery tickets! You can peer into their "kitchen" which I'm pretty sure is a portable stovetop. The inside has very cute décor. The staff were extremely friendly. They accept cash or venmo only! We started with a mango slushie (a little watered down and icy) and a Thai iced tea (delicious and creamy). Pata Yum Gai Zabb (3/5): Sadly, the dish was salty beyond belief! Luckily, mouthfuls of the plain white rice helped to balance the flavor. It was otherwise, also very bland in taste. It just tasted like soy sauce. I was expecting more for a dish considered in the "Michelin Bib Gourmand" recommendation. Pad Kee Mao (3/5): The noodles were not fully cooked and therefore hard/chewy for most of the dish. This cafe is located at the end of a residential block, and I could never think it's a restaurant there. This place looks like a convenience store with rustic art installation. In fact, they do sell lottery tickets here!! The store has a mosaic wall of scrap wood, an array of objects like you find in a museum that includes buckets, silverware, books, statues of the Buddhas, and some plants. The food doesn't look like it includes a ton of ingredients but is packed with a punch of flavor. We asked for spicy and we didreceived it, one person at the table wasn't able to handle it, and that one person wasn't me. This michelin guide restaurant was run by an older lady by herself. We tried 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, and a cold coffee, all of which were amazing. If you are in Queens and want to get some great Thai food in a NYC residential neighborhood, look no further. Why Pata Cafe doesn't get more shine is beyond me. As a fun women-owned business in the heart of Little Thailand (#1), they have morphed from a drinks only cafe to a full fledged casual eatery focusing on simple Thai comfort food dishes. Born from the success of Pata Paplean (#2), they've made a real impact in the local area and make me wish I had a neighborhood gem like this in my own backyard. Big groups will struggle here as the place is small and limited seating. The layout of the place is cramped like any NYC spot, so folks will just have to make the best of it. The vibe is casual as it is homey, it feels like the perfect place to grab a drink and a little grub in good company. Speaking of grub, their options here are vast. From flavor packed curries to tasty noodle dishes, there is very little that doesn't merit a thumbs up. Their pad woon sen and pad see yu are lovely, as is the classic basil pork with egg over rice. OH. MY. GOD. YOU GUYS. This place is the best Thai restraunt I've been in my life. (I've been to many Thai restaurants in the past). We were getting on our way out of the city and the traffic to I-495 was impossible. So we just pulled over and found the closest restraunt. We ended up stumbling on this tiny restraunt down the street. There's plenty of free street parking and it's pretty quiet around here. We walked in and it seemed like a cute, humble little place. There were 2 tables inside that sit 4 people each. There was one lady behind the counter. This lady did everything, she ran the whole place all by herself! She mentioned that her daughter helps out, but she wasn't working at the moment. She was so kind and it felt like home. We ordered the Tum Poo Plara, I ordered it cause I normally love papaya salad, and this seemed like a more elevated version than the usual. We also got the Basil Fried Rice, Kua Gai, lychee Thai ice tea, and coffee with cream and sugar. There's 1 small bathroom inside should you need to use one. It's pretty clean, but small. Despite the whole restaurant being run by 1 lady while fulfilling take out orders at the same time, it took her about 10 mins to prepare everything. It was pretty impressive. But our party of 3 were also the only ones in the whole restaurant. We also went later on in the day around 2pm. Everything smelled amazing and the noodles and rice were steamy hot! The lychee Thai ice tea was refreshing and very sweet and tasty. The Tum Poo Plara was very very flavorful, spicy with the perfect mix of umami from the fermented crab, sweetness from the tomatoes and the sauce, and sour from the lime and fish sauce. It was amazing. The Basil Fried Rice was pretty good too. It was delicious and not super oily or salty. But the star of the table was the Kua Gai. I've never heard of it before or tried it. There were these thick broad rice noodles stri-fried with thin strips of chicken with flavors of coconut, peanut, spice gave the dish such an amazing complex flavor that was so deep and mindblowing. I think this dish could have easily been $30 in a NYC restaurant. It was so good. It came with a small dish of siracha too to dip the noodle in which just made the noodles taste even better! After we were done eating the plates clean, she suggested we try the sticky rice mango dessert. So we thought it sounded good and we got it. She prepared it fresh with the streamy hot fresh sticky rice next to the perfectly riped mango. The dessert was actually my mom's favorite part. When I tried it, I cut a piece of the mango and ate it with a scoop of the rice. And oh man. I just melted into blissful heaven. I felt like I was melting into the dessert. The mango, sticky rice, and coconut milk just dissolves into your mouth with no unpleasant textures. The flavors and textures just work perfectly with each other. I think the mango was the softest, most sweet mango I've ever had in a restraunt before. Overall this place doesn't deserve 5 stars. This place deserves 10 stars. She prepared the food with such love, and detail. The presentation was beautiful and the food was to die for. This tiny place is a hidden gem. We tipped her very well and left very satisfied. Great Mom and Daughter Team! This isn't a Michelin restaurant, not a destination restaurant, not a place for a large group, not a place where you will receive white glove service, not located near anything else you'd want to goto,... I could go on and on, BUT PATA CAFE is a great neighborhood restaurant. The mom and daughter team behind the scenes are delightful and sooo endearing. Every time I'm here both make it a point to greet and say hello even if brief. They cater somewhat to the nearby local elementary school with a snacks such as fried wings, hot dogs, fries, grilled cheese sandwiches and grilled marshmallows. These snacks including the fried wings are very good. I can definitely see the younger crowd making Pata Cafe a hangout for something before dinner. But this isn't the main draw for me of course. The main draw for me is the awesome Steamed Chicken and Shrimp Dumplings. The perfect appetizer, 5 to an order, loosely packed and set, these dumplings are great. They also have some great grilled chicken over rice with a couple of options for sauces including plain. Often times, the Thai Chili is really good without much heat. The fried rice isn't fantastic as it really lacks the fire in the wok but it isn't the worse fried rice I've had. They have a few desserts and bubble teas to satisfy the those with a sweet tooth as well. So the restaurant itself is not very large, there are only seats for maybe 10-12 with a large majority of seating at one large table. This café is a tiny space of about four tables with fun, quirky décor. There's a definite relaxed, casual vibe here. On the walls are lots of reclaimed wood, everyday Thai objects and twinkling lights. The tables aren't quite level but who cares! It's amazing to me that all the yummy food comes out of this tiny kitchen behind the counter. The Pad Thai was lighter in color, less sweet and less oily than what I'm used to. Nevertheless, this was quite tasty. The Basil Fried Rice was another delicious dish. This was by far my favorite dish during this visit. The Thai chicken wings were okay. They were really just fried chicken wings with the sweet and sour dipping sauce. For drinks, we got a mango slush and a strawberry slush. Both were a little too sugary for me but was okay. For dessert, we got the mango sticky rice. This was a nice way to end the meal with. The mangoes were perfectly ripe, and I liked that they give you the full mango (minus the pit). At some restaurants I've been to, they only give you half of the mango. The service is also good -- it's run by these two sweet women who are attentive and friendly the minute you step into the cafe. The dining area is small so it's definitely not made for large group gatherings, but is suitable for groups of up to 4 people. I got the Shrimp Tom Yum, which was mildly spicy and reminded me of a Singaporean laksa. I'd recommend this if you like coconut milk based broth. By far one of the best Thai food restaurants I've been to. I think what makes this place special is that grandma is throwing down in the kitchen. Her and her grand daughter are like dynamic duo's. I love the rolled up shrimp rolls and the basil shrimp friend rice. I had the pad swee ou (probably spelling this wrong lol) and that's also a favorite. The hospitality is amazing and food is great. They do take out as well as sit in however this is a small and cozy spot so if you plan on sitting in make sure to call and ask if they are not packed. Rounded up to 4 stars as it's very respectable that only a mum and daughter team operate the restaurant, their Thai iced tea was quite nice too ($3). Originally aimed to go to Khao Kang but saw that this place was well-received on yelp. Located in a very obscure part of Elmhurst which can make it hard to locate. I can't help but feel these guys would get a lot more service in a more visible location....Like many have commented, the interior in very unique and quirky, I like that they've recycled scrap pieces of wood. We ordered chicken pad see eiw and their shrimp basil fried rice (this place does not charge extra for shrimp option! :D). Both dishes were wetter/saucier than I've had at any Thai restaurant, whilst this was a welcome change to my pad see eiw, texturally it was off putting in the rice dish. The basil fried rice (mild) had a good background heat to it and was abundant with shrimp and fresh basil which I liked. Another letdown though was that 2 of the shrimp were undercooked which can be potential for food poisoning. The pad see eiw had well-balanced flavours, noodles were deliciously chewy, I was digging the extra sauciness, there were good amounts of greens,chicken and egg. Portion sizing was on the smaller side, compared to the serving of the basil fried rice. Price-wise, this place runs on the cheaper side compared against the average Thai restaurant. I wanted to call ahead and bring it back to office to eat, however the phone number listed went into voicemail immediately. She was glad that I told her Regarding to the restaurant and the food, I was a little skeptical when I saw the portable stove and home style rice cooker. In June, during Covid-19 time, I ordered food delivery on a Wednesday evening. We ordered 2 pad thai's with chicken, 2 orders of chicken wings and steamed dumplings (it looked like shumai). This hidden neighborhood gem is the place to go for truly authentic Thai flavors. I've eaten Thai from many places but never tasted such authenticity as the dishes here. Their food is absolutely delicious. The Tom yum goong soup is unlike any I've ever tasted. Even in the summer months its a refreshing meal. Also the basil fried rice is absolutely amazing! Not greasy at all , fresh flavors , and you choose how spicy you want it. I get it medium and it's just enough so u can still taste the wonderful Thai herbs and flavors with a little kick. For dessert our go to are the Nutella banana and fresh fruit crepes. My husband can eat 3 of these for his meal alone. What's wonderful about this place also is that it is a mother and daughter chef team that take great pride in their food. I am incredibly impressed with this cafe that serves the most amazing Thai food in a location that is tucked inside a neighborhood in Queens. I had to attend a conference at a school down the block and was heading towards the deli, when it caught my eye. Firstly, because I saw the sign that expresses how people from Yelp love it, and secondly because I saw the A rating from the department of health...that is something to be excited about!! Food here is pretty decent too. My wife and I stopped here on 2-17-18 for some some Thai chili chicken wings, Tom Yum soup, and basil fried rice. The Thai chili chicken wings were just fried wings with Thai chili dipping sauce. Better than your average frozen wings. It came with 6 pieces and was $5. Tom Yum soup was great. Flavorful, not too sour and a tiny bit spicy. They can adjust the spice levels according to your taste which is cool. Came with some lemon leaf, lemongrass, mushrooms, red onions, sliced grapes tomatoes, and galangal. $5. Basil fried rice was decent. It didn't have that garlic heavy taste that I typically look forward to with basil fried rice. Instead, the rice had light notes of soy sauce which was still okay. Came with a variety of veggies which I liked. The gentle grandmother makes the food, gave our meal a nice homemade feel. Will definitely be back to explore their menu and for more cups of Thai iced tea. read more
