Duane Reade is ok. They carry a decent range of items, and are reasonably priced. But considering a pharmacy sells stuff that is used primarily on your most important possession (that would be your self), is ok really good enough? Pasteur Pharmacy isn't ok, they are superb. Their product selection and pricing are among the best in Manhattan. Considering the floorplan is a fraction of a Duane Reade, it is rather amazing. (And a good thing it doesn't get too crowded because gridlock would set in after the 10th customer browses the aisles). The reason I go there is for shaving supplies. Every 6 months to a year I run out of my alum block, tub of Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream or a similar item which I can only get here, on the internet or a couple other random pharmacies (none of which compare on price). The staff is helpful and the wide range of products has lead me discover new brands, not just in shaving, but in dental care, body wash, and other body products. I took my girlfriend by one time, and she found an item that she had been special ordering online, and for a bit more money. If it was a little closer to where I lived, the place would be perfect. read more

Visiting NYC for the week and forgot my hair gel! Horrors! Found this place through Yelp, and I've become a believer. The best part was, they had a huge selection of travel sizes of everything. Thought I'd have to buy a gel and toss it before I got on the airplane, but found just what I was looking for -- AND in 3 oz. size. People are friendly and helpful tool although I didn't find a nail product I've been searching for -- Daby. But they seem to have everything else. read more

The men's selection here is REALLY GOOD, particularly for shaving products. Easily the best selection that I've found in NYC. It's so hard to find really good shaving soaps, and it's so good to choose a soap/cream in person, keeping in mind the accompanying lotion/soap/shampoo/cologne because they carry it as well. I also really appreciate that they carry more obscure items that I've never seen before from common brands (like a daily hair-product-removing shampoo from American Crew to go with their hair-wax which I use). read more

I love L'Oreal Elnett hairspray BUT I only use the kind made in France - most places ONLY carry the one made in the USA and they are totally different formulas! I am a new DE shaver and read about this place online. I traveled 5,000 miles to come here and was not disappointed. Pasteur Pharmacy has all of the shaving supplies you could possibly need and the customer service is excellent (at least it was for me.. then again, I spent mucho dinero here). Steve, the manager, even introduced himself to me and offered some shaving product recommendations. The only downside of the pharmacy is the wee narrow aisle ways that can be difficult to navigate while customers are passing by. Often I found myself trying to get out of people's way in the middle of my shopping. If you are into double edge safety razor shaving, you absolutely MUST come here. The prices for some of their products may seem steep, but that is because they sell premium high quality shaving supplies...but they also stock affordable cheaper items as well. I also enjoyed the variety of unique oral healthcare products such as Botot, Couto, and Marvis toothpaste. Highly recommended store. read more

If you are a shaving aficionado, you MUST visit this store. It's exactly like another reviewer stated, "...it's like walking into every product mentioned on the Internet ". This store has almost everything you could want. They have at least 8 shelves jammed with EACH product line out there. i.e. Taylor of Old Bond Street. The entire line of their products are there including every scent. Same with Truefitt & Hill. But what really sets them apart is that they have many, many sample bottles of items that you can try. I have been looking for awhile, trying to find a good scent from pre-shave to after shave. But did not want to just take a chance and buy something. They've got it and you can try it. They even have some of the finest razors out there along with brushes (even Simpsons), puck scuttles, blades, etc. Amazing store. read more

My husband needs a prescription that Duane Reade and Rite Aid don't carry and can't get. When our local specialty pharmacy where he usually gets it didn't have it, and couldn't get it, I googled "best pharmacy in New York City" and Pasteur was the first hit. I called and they had what was written on the prescription. However, when I faxed it over to my them they realized it was incorrect. So they called the doctor and got it straighten out. (Can you imagine Duane Reade doing that?) and then it turns out they also had the correct medicine. And they deliver! Their staff is an absolute pleasure to deal with -- very friendly and accommodating and they all speak English perfectly. I am so happy I found them. This is how every pharmacy should be. read more

I've been shaving with a safety razor and high quality soaps for a couple of years now. I was buying most of the necessities through Amazon, which worked well enough, but I didn't realize this place was right in my backyard. They have just about every shaving soap/balm/splash/razor you could think of. Sure beats Amazon if I need to pick up a pack of blades quickly. My wife has pulled the plug on these guys. Our first visit was a pleasant surprise. The manager on the floor was totally knowledgeable and we found several products that we had been looking for since moving to New York. Second visit, with a perscription in hand, was a nightmare. Pharmacist was full of himself and couldn't be bothered. Even the girl assisting rolled her eyes about his attitude as though it was an everyday thing. Just in case management cares it was Friday eve, 14 November, 6:30 pm. It was so bad that even though my wife had given written down our address and personal details she asked for everything back and left, with the pharmacists shouting "Well have a nice day then". While they have amazing inventory, the dolts who work in the pharmacy are a nightmare. (The pharmacists, btw, are harried, but nice.) One of the three women constantly bickers with her co-workers. Another, is an insolent child who could not be more unprofessional. She spent about 5 minutes today talking snark to me (I know you are, but what I am? kind of thing) because she apparently felt slighted. I am pulling my prescriptions from Pasteur. read more

I used this pharmacy because it was recommended by my doctor as a good compounding pharmacy. The quality of the medication they provide may be good but it's not worth the aggravation of having to call and deal with their apathetic and rude staff. If you want good service, go elsewhere. read more

I was so excited to see all of the great named products they have here. Like the Paul Mitchell and nioxin products that are totally expensive on line. The prices in this store are "discounted" but not by much. In addition to that the products are old. I opened my nioxin to use this morning and the smell was completely off. Not at all like the bottle I ordered from the nioxin site. This worries me a bit. Also my Paul Mitchell products say to discard after 18months of opening. These products didn't come with a seal and I'm not sure as to how long it has been sitting on their shelves. I do not recommend anyone buys any soaps, shampoos, lotions etc. from this place. Hair brushes, nail clippers, nail filers: sure, why not! But the other products?! Please... Keep your money and buy the product from the retailers themselves or a trustworthy/reputable drug store. I spent 100 dollars here on only four small items yesterday and I'm completely unhappy with the expired/old stench my shampoos have. I love Pasteur Pharmacy! I've never picked up an rx here but I only go for the skincare and haircare selection. It is a an "old school" kind of pharmacy as opposed to Duane Reade. But it reminds me of the pharmacies in Europe with a huge cosmetic appeal. The shelves are stocked very tightly and the store space is fairly small. It's a lot of take in if it's your first time. I work in fashion and spend a lot of time in Europe. I fell in love with a lot of European skincare which is extremely hard to find in the US. Pasteur carries the entire line of all of my favorites like Bioderma, La Roche Posay (Euro), Avene (the Euro line, not the US line Duane Reade and CVS carries), Vichy (Euro line), Roger and Gallet etc. They also carry a lot of other hard to find skincare lines that I usually have to order online like Aqua Glyolix. As far as haircare, you can find the usual names like Paul Mitchell, Redken but they also have Shu Uemura, Leonor Greyl and Kerastase. Essentially, this is what I hoped Ricky's would be and I'm glad it's here in NYC! I don't live in the neighborhood so I'm devoted to my semi-annual treks to stock up on items I love from Europe. read more

Pasteur Pharmacy unarguably has the largest selection of shaving products the city. If you are new to wet double edged shaving or want to explore the art this is THE place to experiment with with different blades, soaps, brushes and creams to find out what combination you like the best. This place had me believing it was the reliable neighborhood mom and pop operation and alternative to the big chains. It DOES have something of the apothecary feel but dealing with the pharmacy is pretty much the worst of both worlds. Med prices are too high, they don't recognize return customers, the pharmacy staff does not make you feel comfortable. Honestly I would make this place a last resort, might as well hit a duane reade. read more

This my first Yelp review. Even though I am crazy busy, I am taking the time to write it because these guys are life savers (literally at times.) Even though I have a Duane Reade and a CVS on my corner, I still walk an extra ave. to bring all of my RX's to them. Both pharmacists (esp the lady, whose name I wish I knew because she is AMAZING!!) go out of their way to help you. They mitigate insurance drama, they always have good brands of meds in stock, and you never have to wait an hour and half like at the big chain pharmacies. They usually fill it on the spot in under 10-15 min. And you can browse their amazing collection of beauty supplies while you wait. After living abroad I got used to my European toothpaste and deoderant & shampoo; and this place has it all. And if they don't they will custom order it for you. Oh and the best part, they will DELIVER your rx to your home for free! In sum, this place rocks. Long live the mom & pop shops- no chain will ever take their place.
