I asked for penne and the cook made fettuccine and the owner apologized which was fine but the $11 garlic bread was not very good and the pasta was not very good. YES! LATE NIGHT PASTA! Just having a late night place open, that's not a bar or cuisine centered around drinking (think some Korean restaurants, skewers, etc.), is a rarity and greatly appreciated. Pastaphony is a new franchise where you can build your own pasta or order the presets combinations that they already have. This location is open until midnight/1 AM on most nights (aside from Sunday), which is a GOD SEND. There's outdoor seating and indoor seating. I believe they share a space with another restaurant, since the restroom is in between to the right side if need be. All of the drinks are canned/bottled in the small fridge that they have and you can see that they're trying to make it into a hang out spot as they have board games and such here too and it's quite close to Fullerton College. The owner, I believe, Aybek (sorry, if I spelled wrong!) was super friendly and welcoming, shook both of our hands and introduced us and welcomed us into the restaurant. Super courteous and friendly and explained the entire menu to us. Food came out decently quickly and was delicious as well, can't go wrong with some pasta, garlic bread, and carbs. He was nice enough to throw in some complimentary Nutella bomb desserts as well. He also mentioned that his wife made all of the sauces. It's neat that there's a mom and pop shop vibe even for a franchise. For our late night visit, we got the: 1) Build Your Own (BYO) Pasta: -For BYO, you get a pasta and sauce of your choice, unlimited toppings, and you just pay a small extra fee for any premium toppings (the proteins). -We got the penne pasta with pink sauce (mix of the red sauce and Alfredo sauce), garlic, parsley, and basil. For the premium toppings, we got grilled chicken. -Comes out piping hot, very creamy and a generous portion as well. We had to take it to go since it was more than enough for 2 hungry adults in the dead of the mornight. -Grilled chicken was interspersed throughout and the flavoring from our toppings choice tied everything deliciously together. There's also parmesan and crushed red pepper packets if you need to add in more seasoning, but it was perfect the way that we had it. 2) Garlic Breadsticks: -This comes with 4 pieces and served with marinara sauce. -Super garlicky and fragrant. Delicious and a staple you can't do without. Fine on it's own and with the marinara sauce, but super addicting and delicious dipped into our pasta sauce. 3) Nutella Bomb: -Super cute that the owner drew 2 Nutella chocolate hearts on the pastries. It's bomboloni (fried Italian donuts) filled with Nutella. Soft and completely filled to the brim with Nutella. Best eaten fresh as the warmth makes the filling more gooey. The meal is bagged very well, with utensils, extra cheese, and pepper. They offer build your own bowls with certain mix ins for free, and others at an additional charge. There's an Italian spot nearby named Mamma Mia that I love but had to try this place out because they offer a Build-Your-Own (BYO) model of ordering that's very affordable! When I arrived, the man working the shop gave me an ETA of 5 more minutes because they were busy for the lunch rush which was a-okay. The man offered me coffee on the house but I declined only because I had coffee waiting for me in the car already. 5 minutes go by and an additional 5 extra minutes but I was in no rush. Everything was freshly made to order and it was nice seeing him prepare my food right in front of my eyes. There is nothing more to say other than that this is a flawless and spectacular new pasta spot that I'd feel guilty to gatekeep. There are tables in side and a few outside but I think this spot is more designed for takeout orders. I will be returning again in the near future to try out more of their menu. You can DIY your own pasta by choosing the type of noodle, sauces like pink sauce or truffle cream, then any complimentary toppings--yes, you can get all of them if you want. I highly recommend adding on some premium protein, like the breaded chicken they can make into a chicken parm. But if you're indecisive like me, you can't go wrong with their signature pastas like the fettuccine truffle mushroom and spicy penne arrabiata. Heidi and crew were very welcoming and explained their store menu and concept, a fast paced pick and choose pasta made to order with some preset menu options if you're not sure which combos works. I would say the restaurant space isn't that large so it is made for the busy work environment that downtown workers who go out for lunch. Wife wanted fettuccini with pink sauce and spinach so that's what I ordered! Food was ready within 5-8 min and a big portion it was! Brought it home and we shared it together. Pasta was slightly pass al dente but that could be from just bringing it home but the sauce was nice and thick and all the pasta noodles were covered in sauce but not stuck together! I also got to try one of their desserts which was like mini donut with nutella which was sweet and great after the pasta! Ive tried a few spots known for their pasta, but this place has been the best. Portions are really good! The added chicken is really soft, juicy, and TASTES good. You can tell the chicken has been prepped beforehand. The sauce is also not insanely heavy like most places so you cant stop eating. The flavors are balanced and the sauce is verrry good. Will be coming back! Im quite picky and have no complaints. Emphasis on the chicken though. I usually would avoid adding/eating the chicken because you can tell its either been frozen for a while, dry, or not even prepped. The fact that even the chicken added into the pasta is given that much attention says a lot about the owner and the food. He also feels quite bad on behalf of the customers who dont get their food on time when things get busy. They only have 4 ovens and it seems to weigh heavy on his heart that he cant provide faster service. I thought I overpaid and had instant buyer's remorse. My total came out to about $33 with a 15 percent tip after adding chicken parm to the fettuccine Alfredo with truffle, parmesan, and parsley.
