an undiscovered gem just west of the loop! friends told me that the primary reason to go here was the chicken tenders. and they are partially right. the tenders here are as close to the old fry's (out westheimer @ eldridge) as anyone has come... BUT. just about everything else there is good as well. as a houstonian since 1993 and I-10 west resident since 2010. my first visit here was about october 2012. which is just a crime! i have had the tenders, the burger, wings, chicken fried_____ and a variety of other offerings and ive yet to be disappointed. you drive by and think its a tiny place (due to the 8-10 parking spaces out front. but there is a lot more to the place behind the facade. no more yappin' just go! it's like chili's for people with taste. read more

I'm not gonna lie, when I first saw the place I was scared it was going to be some hole in the wall joint with roaches crawling on the walls. Went here as a kid 30 years ago and loved it. Went today for Sunday lunch. Food is still decent, but they were completely overwhelmed with having a full lunch crowd. Took 10 minutes to have waitress come to table and another 30 minutes to get our food. And another 20 to get the check. So disappointing. Will not be coming back again. read more

Came here because of a chicken fried steak craving. It's was at best, okay. Thick batter and super thick gravy. But worse yet, was the terrible service. The hostess was unfriendly, and the waitress was horrible. She passed our table at least 4 times and never asked once if we needed a refill on our completely empty drinks. The only time we saw her was when she brought our entrees, and even then, I had to ask for the refill. We watched as she passed by several times chomping on something, which was either gum or nibbles of food...either are not appropriate for a server. All in all, will not be returning. read more

This is one of my go-to places for home style, Americana, comfort food. Their daily dishes are very good and provide good variety for your culinary diversity. Everything has been good so far, but I wouldn't come here for burgers. I especially love their shrimp and grit, and their blackened catfish dish. read more

Love this place, I've eaten here several times and it never disappoints. Portions are huge-great for sharing, and I've never had anything I didn't like. The shrimp poorboy is probably my favorite but I've also had the grilled chicken sandwich and it was excellent. Realized I have never written a review, which is an absolute travesty! I must take the greatness for granted. Pappy's is evvarythang and I am there at least once a week. I have never ordered an entree that wasn't the bomb. I have never had a server that wasn't overly friendly and warm. (Holla Terry!) The drink specials are great, favorite is Friday Long Beach & every day frozen Margarita. Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad, Bubba's Chicken, Fried Jalapenos, Chicken Fried Steak, the only reason I don't come every day is I would weigh 1,000 pounds. This is our go to place! Great food at a great price, and amazing staff. If you like home style cooking, this is the place for you. I've had their tex-Mex too and it is real good. Terry is hands down the best waiter. After only a few visits he remembered me and my boyfriends names and is always joking around with you. The one bad thing would be the drinks. They aren't that good... The margaritas taste like a mix from the grocery store and I feel like they don't have any liquor. First went to Pappy's in the early 1980's and finally went back to retry at their new location. First not many changes in terms of decor and seating from Texas Land and Cattle. Some of the kitsch from old Pappy's made the trip, but seems swallowed up in the new digs. We all commented that still looks like TLC and not all homey like the old Pappy's. Same menu as before, classic Texas diner with lots of choices. I had a Chicken Fried steak with smashed potatoes and a Caesar salad. My friend had the mushroom burger with smashed potatoes. The CFS (once rated as 4th best in Texas) hasn't changed much. Very large size, freshly battered and real white pepper gravy. I would rated it 8 out of 10. The Caesar was a disappointment, served on a flat plate (I prefer a shallow bowl/saucer), dressing unremarkable (I loved the old TLC red pepper Caesar dressing), clearly bagged romaine, and no fresh pepper or Parmesan served at the table! The mushroom burger looked excellent. At least 1/2 pound and flat top grilled. Lots,lots, lots of grilled mushrooms. My friend ate every morsel, spoke little but was grinning the whole time. The Star were the smashed potatoes - potatoes with green onions, bacon, sour cream and cheese all smashed together. The new location is convenient and has ample parking, no wait even though we were there at 6 pm on a Saturday evening. Packed and very loud but with the number of people eating there it was not unexpected. First let's start with the positives, seated in literally seconds and the booth was more than big enough for the 3 adults and 3 kids in our party. Waitress Ashlea was fantastic and got us our drinks within a few minutes of sitting down, just an OK selection of draft beers but it is super ice cold. Ordered our appetizer of the spinach artichoke dip and the entrees at the same time (our bad should have known better). Three side salads along with the meals ordered and of course the 2 of the 3 salads came out well before the appetizer did. Spinach artichoke dip was very good, hot and tasty with plenty of tortilla chips to go along with it. Entrees ordered were kids mac and cheese with fries, chicken fried steak and the shrimp and grits. Food came out before we had even finished the appetizer (really got the feeling they were rushing us), third salad never did come and had to ask for it to be brought out. Salads served in hot bowls so lettuce was wilting, dressings were nothing less than awful. Blue cheese dressing was sweet, not like a little sweet but like so sweet it was inedible and had to order a different dressing. Ceasar dressing was so over the top spiced with garlic and something we couldn't even figure out that it was uneaten (we eat a ton of caesar salad and this was the worst we have ever had). The chicken fried steak was just ok, hot and portion size was great but the mashed potatoes almost tasted like instant, but the country gravy was spot on. Shrimp and grits were very spicy which we loved, but the grits were completely overcooked and the shrimp had been grilled to death. Overall a very disappointing place that we had truly looked forward to trying because we had so many people recommend it in the new location and it is super convenient to get to, but it did not live up to the hype. read more

I am leaving the parking lot now after waiting for 40 mins. It was busy and we expected to wait. After waiting for 25 mins a group of 9 ( we were a group of 6), after agreeing to be sat in separate booths they saw a bigger table of older ladies about to leave. So the grabbed the manger and complained about there waiting and wanting to move to be together. The host did ask if they were cool with seating separate - they agreed. So as our name grew closer to being up, the first big group that left the manger moved them to the big table. This was after we heard that same manger tell the host he did care if people left mad yet he was willing to help them. I loved pappy's and would come quite frequently never leaving disappointed. This place reminds me of spots my grandparents took me to when I was young. It has just the right mix of divey and delicious that makes it fun for anyone. Whether there with clients at lunch, or after a long week of work with the family, this is the perfect place for any occasion. This is one of those places that you have driven past a hundred times but for whatever reason, have never stopped and checked it out. Fortunately for me, this time we stopped. It was Friday night at about seven thirty and we were seated right away. The menu was diversified and easy to read. Pappy's has a little bit of everything, so finding a dish for a picky eater (like my son) was no problem. I chose blackened catfish and asked for some grilled shrimp as well (for a few dollars more). The entree came with two sides, I selected green beans and coleslaw. The fish fillet was served on a bed of rice and those big beautiful shrimp were keeping it company! My request for both tartar sauce as well as red sauce brought a smile and was easily accommodated. The green beans were cooked with a little onion and were very good, the coleslaw was your basic creamy style slaw. The fish was cook just right! Well seasoned and spicy enough for me without masking the sweetness of the catfish. My son had a chicken fried steak with fries and ordered a Black Cow...a root beer float with vanilla ice cream. He was rolling his eyes back into his head as he sucked down the float and growled at me as I attempted to sample his CFS. He ate 90% of that huge chicken fried steak, which is saying a lot considering he also polished off the Black Cow, a salad and most of the fries. Not bad for an 11 year old who is pretty picky. My wife had cheese enchiladas and loved them. My brother in law had Chicken Florentine and made lots of Mmmm sounds between bites. It's also a great place to go if you don't know what your in the mood for since they have a variety of good ole fashion comfort food. Had lunch at Pappy's Café last Saturday and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and wait staff. Ashleigh was very attentive to detail and made sure food came out in a timely manner and the iced tea stayed topped off. Ashleigh even recommended the peach cobbler at the end of the meal which was some of the best I've ever had...and be sure to take it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
