I was…read moreinitially a bit dubious of this place because their photos of their dishes looked a little _too_ picture perfect / social media ready, but Shaoshan Impression turned out to be one of the most authentic and delicious restaurants I've been to in the area so far. Our favorite had to be the duo jiao yu pian (two super tender, juicy white fish filets coated in two different sauces. One was pure spiced and the other had suan cai, a slightly funky and sour pickled veggie). We also loved the stir-fried eggplant and green beans, which was perfectly tender and intensely savory. It was great to have some veggies to break up the otherwise intensely protein-forward meal, and the veggies were all so well-prepared. Despite the menu saying the dish was spicy, I didn't find it spicy at all, so it was also a good break from the rest of the peppery dishes. We also had their stir-fried shrimp, which had an incredibly extravagant presentation, with mountains of red chili peppers and a burner to keep the dish warm throughout the meal, but I thought that the shrimp were a smidge overcooked and more salty than spicy. Nonetheless, the meal was delightful, and, even more importantly, it received the Asian parent stamp of approval! The service was also quite efficient and friendly. There was a kiosk near the front door to join the waitlist, but we ended up only having to wait ~5 minutes before being seated. We ordered off a QR code at the table, but the food all came out quickly and our server was incredibly attentive -- he preempted our every need and refilled water, brought new napkins, and cleared completed dishes almost the second we were ready.

First thing I noticed when I looked at the menu was that the prices are very LA, but before you let that deter you, hear me out: the portion sizes are significantly larger than what you'd get for the same price back home. So in terms of value, you're actually getting a much better deal out here in Redmond. One thing that genuinely caught me off guard; they let me bring my puppy. If you're from LA or the 626, you already know that's basically unheard of. Redmond, Washington is on a whole different level when it comes to being pet friendly, and I loved every second of it. As for the food, it was great overall. The mala wasn't too numbing, which I appreciated, it had just enough kick without overwhelming everything else. The garlic a-choy was perfect, honestly no notes. The braised pork belly was good but I wished it was a touch softer, and I personally felt like my dishes could've used a little more salt or soy sauce, but that's an easy fix and purely personal preference. Would definitely come back next time I'm in the area.

The Bravern does have its own underground lot that the restaurant will validate parking for and I'd say you can definitely walk in on a weekday no problem. The restaurant did seem extremely short staffed with service being extremely slow. We ended up taking more than 2 hours for dinner just because the amount of time it took to place our orders and wait for our food. Overall, the menu is a mix of American style Chinese food and some more traditional dishes. Most of the dishes were made well advance, but you can really tell. The Peking duck was insanely dry and the braised pork belly also wasn't braised quite long enough. The sweet and sour chicken wasn't super crunchy, but the flavor was solid; though I will say, the blueberries were just warmed blueberries on the plate and didn't add anything. The mushroom truffle fried rice was pretty delicious though as was the complimentary soup with the restaurant week set. TLDR food is a bit expensive with some standouts, but generally slightly subpar. Service is insanely slow.

About half the items were a-ok, the other half were fine and I would order it again (Garlic Pea Vines, Boiled Spicy Beef, and Hunan-style Soy Fried Rice). But the dish of the night was the Clay pot Bamboo shoot Pork Trotters and Chicken soup!!! That was sooo flavorful! Service was ok, we did come during the busy dinner rush hour, and they were really busy for a weeknight. Regardless, I want that Clay pot Bamboo shoot Pork Trotters and Chicken soup - it would be so comforting when it's cold!

When I was running my own restaurant, I often told my team: if a place has exceptional service but…read moremediocre food, it will still get good reviews; if the food is extraordinary but the service is terrible, it will inevitably get bad reviews. However, when both service and food exceed expectations, a restaurant becomes an industry benchmark. Service: The service here was truly, exceptionally outstanding. A friend brought me here today--he had only been to this restaurant once before--yet every single staff member remembered him, and even remembered what he had ordered last time! They were genuinely thrilled to see him return. The pacing of the dishes and the check-ins during the meal were both spot-on. Ambiance: A classic Cantonese restaurant atmosphere--full of character, dignified, and rich with Chinese design elements. The seating is comfortable, the restaurant is impeccably clean, and the management is clearly top-notch. Food: Great value for money, with very reasonable pricing. The fried rice was loaded with rich ingredients and seasoned to absolute perfection. The seafood tofu was mild in flavor and made with fresh ingredients--perfect for children. The green beans were fresh and had just the right level of spice. As one of China's Eight Great Culinary Traditions, Cantonese cuisine is defined by its freshness: fresh ingredients, vibrant flavors, and fresh execution. Preparing Cantonese food is far more trouble than people realize; because of the complex preparation, strict standards for ingredients, and a low yield rate, true quality is hard to achieve. Since this restaurant is run entirely by a team of Cantonese chefs, I believe it is ultimately their passion that drives their success.

We ordered shrimp rice roll, har gow, football, shrimp with eggplant, shrimp with bell pepper, spare rib, Xiao long bao, sautéed pea tips, chicken feet, meatballs, shrimp and chive dumplings, tripe, and mango pudding. I really liked the filling in the football, which contained ground pork and mushrooms, not so much the flour for the outer layer. I also liked the tripe, pea tips, and chicken feet. They were delectable. Other than that, it seemed a bit plain. I didn't really like the chili oil they used, it was more like a sambal. I'm glad we ended with the mango pudding for dessert. The mold for it was so cute. Hopefully next time I come here they change up the chili used.

We were craving soup dumplings and wanted to venture somewhere new outside of our usual West Seattle orbit. So naturally, we chose to make the drive during peak rush hour. Completely worth it. The vibe here is ridiculously cute, and the playlist had both guests and staff singing along lyrics to songs I probably haven't heard in a decade. (Hellogoodbye & all American rejects?! Yesssss) And for the food we started with FULL HEAT: Szechuan Spicy Xiao Long Bao -- AMAZING flavor and definitely packs a punch. So hot, but so addicting. Far exceeded expectations. I want to live inside one of these lil fire balls of magic Hot & Sour Soup -- We added extra spice and it was perfect. It's also a generous portion which is shocking for $7.50. It came out first and we knew after the first bite that the rest of the meal was going to be awesome Spicy Shrimp & Pork Wontons -- not too spicy, great flavor and very meaty. At one point, our server came by to refill our sodas and asked, "How is everything, spicy?" And yes. Yes, it was. Though nothing lingered too long and the heat did not overpower the flavor of any of the dishes. All was perfectly balanced. Our server came to the rescue with her recommendation for the Mini Pan-Fried Pork Dumplings. Imagine a soup dumpling that decided to put on a crispy little jacket. SO GOOD. And a huge shoutout to Melyna, who was absolutely phenomenal. She knew the menu inside and out, was incredibly sweet, and was somehow always two steps ahead when it came to service and prebussing. She was attentive and made us feel genuinely taken care of. Honestly, this was easily the best service I've had in Seattle since moving here from Los Angeles. I know there's a location closer to where I live, but after this visit, we definitely fell in love with this spot. Thank you Melyna for making an already great meal even better!
