Giving this place a 3 star rating because of the people, but I'd give the food a 2. I wish I had checked reviews before spending $20 on a sub par turkey sandwich and a small 8oz cup of chicken noodle soup where the chicken was all fat pieces. Despite my coworkers saying to stay away, I went anyways in hopes of developing a positive opinion for myself. It seems that there isn't a good sandwich place in bellevue that DOESN'T grill them. I asked this place not to grill my sandwich and I'm assuming it's part of why it wasn't great. I had asked for the turkey club with no mayo and instead got a turkey club with no tomato- honest mistake, but not a fan of mayo in general. The chicken noodle soup broth was the winner of my whole lunch... and that was disappointing. I, unfortunately, will not be going back to this place even though I wanted to love it so bad. read more

I am very disappointed with my experience at City Soups. I love soup and this is within walking distance to work, so figured I would give this a try for what the reviews said was a good selection. Got there at 12:30 (apparently very late) and first ordered a grilled cheese, where I was surprisingly prompted to choose a size (that was not written on any of their makeshift menus, but decided on whatever the smaller size was since I was also getting soup). They were already out of the Lobster Bisque, the soup being advertised on the sandwich board outside, disappointing but not unpredictable (must be good?). The next one I wanted to try was the seafood stew, but when I looked at it I could not identify any ingredient and there was very unappetizing congealing. Honestly, nothing looked appealing, so I went for basic chicken noodle and upgraded to a 'larger' sandwich. My order got passed along from employee to employee, but not one person gave me an idea of what was going on (they have different stations but you pay somewhere in the middle and with people waiting around in different spots with no employees saying anything to anyone, it's a mess). I was at least kindly asked if I wanted a piece of bread (yes please?? Had to confirm it was free, which I would never turn down) however it got put into a bag that was not with either my soup or sandwich. After I paid, the cashier just started helping the next person. No food in my hand or words about where it was (some sort of acknowledgment would have been great - as one of the only men I saw working, step up your charm game!) Eventually, I heard someone call out that a grilled cheese and chicken soup were ready, so I grabbed it after more awkward shuffling and left. No employee had asked me if it was for here or to go, so it was all just thrown in a brown paper bag, and I mean that. Got less than 2 minutes away and due to a poorly closed lid, my soup had leaked on the bottom of the bag which was instantly disintegrating and everything proceeded to fall out. So I've got half my soup on the ground, but at least I have my grilled cheese! Unfortunately, it's not even close to delicious, with the exception of the bread. The cheese seems like a small upgrade from Kraft. It's also tiny (I'd really like to know what their sizes are, I still don't understand). The soup is not half bad, except it was cold by the time I sat down to eat it, and the noodles are super thick and fall apart (not a personal favorite). I'll give them at least a star for the broth and good portions of chicken and veggies. Seeing as I paid almost $15 for this meal which is OUTRAGEOUS, it had fallen on the sidewalk, and it was just not very good, I figured I should go back and say something, but alas, I have no receipt because I didn't want to deal with entering my email or phone number and I had already spent a fair amount just getting the food. TLDR; I do not have plans on returning here even though I'm sure the staff are nice enough when it's earlier and not so busy (looks like it may have even been run by a family, which I approve). I was personally shocked at the prices and lack of quality of their most staple food items, plus they have limited open hours and no website to check what soups are available. If you do go, go very early afternoon, get it for 'here', and you might luck out with chili or their salads. read more

Stopped by here for lunch and was craving a good soup and sandwich... Ordered a Rueben and a cup of chowder. My buddy got a BLT and tomato soup. Both our sandwiches were phenomenal, good bread, a hint of sweetness to the Rueben, not a heaping portion like I'm used to but a good enough size to fill me up at the end of my meal. The soup however - despite previous reviews - was not good. The chowder was very bland, which I couldn't understand why, as clam chowder is heavy cream based. It wasn't very chunky either, lots of just watery spoonfuls of blandness. I thought it was a fluke or the pot wasn't stirred up (still possible) but my buddy ate his tomato soup and said the same, just watery and no flavor. So I won't recommend that nor dock their entire business for it as I will try again another day to see if it was a fluke, but I will say the sandwiches are legit! Everything on the menu is pretty much $8.99-$9.99 so a soup and sandwich combo will set up back $20 + tip. Not the cheapest by any means but i don't mind supporting local and the fact that they are across the street from my work, it makes it super convenient. read more

I usually don't eat here as it is very overpriced. Today i was lazy, as this is in my building I figured id get the spicy chicken, which used to be good. It appears they have decided to switch out real chicken with some chopped and formed breast meat. You know the kind, think Tyson with the fake grill marks, comes presliced in a bag. Needless to say it turned the spicy chicken into an almost inedible sodium bomb. The only positive about this resturant is the staff. Visiting from San Francisco and you know what this place is a hidden gem in a corporate city. Here are a couple of reasons why. 1. Their portions are huge, I got spinach mandarin salad and I subbed out the grilled chicken with to not because I do not eat meat. I did not expect the salad to be so huge I am very grateful because I was hungry that day. 2. I'm impressed with the the mixture and dressing of the salad and how it was made. 3. Sian and her staff were delightful and helped us promptly and answered all of our questions. Amazing customer service and very quick. 4. My parents got the Tuna Melt and Clam Chowder and truly enjoyed the food. The clam chowder was delicious and she recommended her grandchildren try it. The Tuna Melt was excellent. 5. My partner got the spinach wrap with added tuna instead of chicken and he enjoyed it thoroughly. He also was surprised about how big his wrap was and could barely finish it, but it was so good he did. Please be patient during peak time, they had make their sandwiches, soups, wraps too. So it may take a while during the lunch rushes but they will get you your meal. I had my first visit to City Soups today, and I must say I was impressed! The service was quick and super friendly, even though I'd visited immediately following the exceptionally busy lunch rush. I'd expected to only see a few soups to choose from, but instead I was presented with a list of 17! I selected turkey chili, clam chowder and bulgogi, all to go. I took them home and saved them for dinner. My wife had the chowder and stated it was every bit as good as anything you could get at Pike Place Market. I had the bulgogi, which with the rice became quite the fulfilling meal! I had not had bulgogi since visiting Korea nearly 30 years ago, and it was every bit as good as I can remember. As for the chili, we had a sample, and it was great as well, but we'll be saving that for lunch tomorrow! In short, if you are in downtown Bellevue during lunch, definitely put City Soups on your list and stop in! read more

Bad customer service. Our company has been using CitySoups for catering purposes for almost 4 years now. Over the last year or so the quality of service and soup has gone down drastically!! I always used to email my orders in, and now emails don't even get read! They contact me a day after delivery was meant to happen telling me that they were away on vacation and could not read the emails. Try using an out of office reply??? The soup itself is not as flavorful any more. Last time we ordered the Butternut Squash & Apple soup, most people in the office told me to never get it again - it just tastes boring and watery. The Alder Smoked Salmon Chowder used to be amazing. Now its mainly potatoes and if you do find a piece of salmon, its fatty or just not edible. Its a shame. As soon as CitySoups changed owners the place went downhill. We will not be using CitySoups any longer. read more

I am glad I found a soup shop close to work. Its not bad soup, at least the varieties I have sampled. I usually come here on Tuesdays when its two for one stamp day and they have grilled cheese sammiches to go with your soup. You also get 10% off your order if you get a sandwich, which I find nice. A bowl of red pepper crab bisque and grilled cheese is less than 10 dollars. I definitely love the topping choices, its a nice touch. My favorite to go with the crab bisque is green onion, cheese and cilantro. Their corn bread is pretty average and unless you dunk it in your soup isnt really worth eatting. Even with a long line it moves really fast and the staff has always been nice and friendly to me. read more

Words of Advice #1-Stop by and sign up for their daily e-mail listing the soups of the day. They usually send it out around 10AM-ish, Mon-Fri. Words of Advice #2-You MUST MUST try the Coconut Curry Chicken soup. It's my absolute favorite and is HEAVENLY. I always ask for extra cilantro and green onions (you have the option to add additional toppings to all of their soups). It's a little piece of heaven in a bowl. Words of Advice #3-Their Clam Chowder is NOT good. It's one of the worst soups they offer. Avoid at all costs. If you're in downtown Bellevue, give it a try. You're bound to find SOMETHING you will like if it's not Coconut Curry Chicken day (they only serve it once or twice a week). read more

So we walk in, and the place is packed- huge line for the soups. We get in line and they have a good selection of soups. I decide to go with the clam chowder. She puts it in the bowl and says that its 10% off for a soup and sandwich. OK great, I was going to get one anyway. I pick a "chipotle turkey" sandwich. Here is what was on the sandwich: 2 pieces of wheat bread that you buy from the store, a piece (YES ONE PIECE) of turkey, a piece of cheese and a piece of wilted lettuce. There was a little chipotle mayo that was on the bread that caused it to be soggy since it'd been sitting wrapped up since this morning, I'm sure. I could have made a better sandwich at home, yet I still payed $9 for this "sandwich" and a small cup of clam chowder. The soup was a 3/10. We are this close to the water and they still can't get clam chowder right... My coworker ordered an Asian chicken salad. The lady was half way done making the salad and when asked why she didn't put the won tons on the salad replied with "oh sorry, we are out of noodles". Pretty average lunch spot for soup. They usualy have about 10 selections, varying from soup to stew. Not especially cheap for soup. But on the positive side they let you add in what you'd like from the 'toppings' bar. The likes of green onion, cilantro, salsa, cheese, etc. And you can choose corn bread or italian bread to go along with it. But if they have it, the artichoke bisque is to die for. For a simple, healthier option, they often have cilantro chicken and rice. City Soups has the best soups and stews in the Pac. N.W.; the absolute best. The Caesar salad there was the only one I ever ate! The extra touches such as Ciabatta bread served with real butter, the small side salads (the slaw deserved a James Beard Award) and toppings of different cheeses and vegetables made City Soups THE PLACE for lunch! Even though I was an avowed anti-shellfish eater, the Lobster Bisque owned my tongue! It was one of the most palate pleasing, eyes closing in bliss bisques I've ever experienced! I will never forget City Soups' Lobster Bisque. But as good at that was, the Jambalaya (I topped it with cheese) was the hands down favorite! It must be tasted to appreciate. The restaurant was clean and bright; the soups were visible & stimulated the eye as well as the scent evoked a Pavlov-like behaviour! Yikes, I think I'm addicted to their lobster bisque! Note that they're only open for lunch, don't try stopping by for dinner or on the weekend. And as Merrilee mentions, even if there is a line of a dozen people don't worry - it moves quick. They offer about a dozen varieties of soup each day, and you can sign up to get on their mailing to list to know what is available each day. These usually include a few types of chili. They will also offer a taste if you are curious about a soup but want to try it before ordering a whole bowl. Make sure to check the prices on the menu, you'll pay more for red pepper & crab bisque than for a basic chicken noodle. They offer a choice of cornbread or italian bread with the soup at no extra charge. Also, starting this year, you can get a little portion of either coleslaw or mac salad for free (I declined it the first few times thinking it'd cost more before discovering it's a new free inclusion.) I've never tried the sandwiches, I always get soup, so can't comment on those. The service is always friendly and smooth, and I've found myself stopping by a few times a week during the cold winter months and never encountered any problems. read more

They are pre-made - this makes for a soggy sandwich with less-than-fresh ingredients. My BLT came with microwavable bacon that looked uncooked and was mushy.
