My husband and I ate here tonight and will never come back. I've never had bad Italian food...This is his review.
"I really wanted to like Panciuto.
I found this place on Instagram and was genuinely excited to try it, especially knowing it came from the same owner as JewBoy Burgers. I've eaten at JewBoy before and think it's a solid burger place, so I went into this with pretty high expectations.
And just to be clear, this review has nothing to do with the building, parking, decor, or the casual setup. None of that bothers me. I'm reviewing the food.
We started with the Caprese salad. It wasn't the traditional sliced tomato-and-mozzarella presentation I was expecting; it was more of an actual salad with arugula, red and green tomatoes, mozzarella, Parmesan and balsamic. Different, but perfectly fine. It tasted good.
We also asked for an appetizer recommendation and got the zucchini fries with truffle butter. Again, they were fine. Not bad, not amazing, but enjoyable enough.
At that point I was still looking forward to the entrees.
The chicken Parmesan we saw come out looked enormous and absolutely beautiful, so expectations went even higher. We ordered our food to go, including the 14-layer lasagna and shrimp scampi.
Unfortunately, once we got home, things fell apart.
The lasagna was one of the strangest lasagnas I've had. I honestly could not identify anything close to 14 distinct layers in what we received. There was very little meat, the cheese had become hard, and the entire thing was absolutely swimming in red sauce. It was almost more like a bowl of tomato sauce with some lasagna in it than lasagna with sauce on it.
It wasn't good.
And somehow, the shrimp scampi was worse.
The pasta was noticeably undercooked and clumped together into a bundle, like the noodles had gone into the pot together and never separated. There was very little flavor other than lemon, and there was WAY too much lemon for my taste. I'll give them credit for the shrimp--they were very large--but the size of the shrimp couldn't save the dish.
My wife barely ate hers.
Then I got to dessert.
They were out of cheesecake, so I ordered a cannoli instead.
This may honestly have been the most disappointing thing we ordered. I love cannoli, and this was probably the worst cannoli I've personally had. The shell was soft instead of crisp, and the filling had such a strong lemon/citrus flavor that lemon was essentially all I could taste. After everything else, I was hoping dessert might redeem the meal, and instead it ended it on an even worse note.
What makes this especially disappointing is that there were pieces of the meal that showed promise. The Caprese salad was fine. The zucchini fries were decent. The portions looked generous. The shrimp were huge. Nothing about the place itself bothered me.
The actual Italian entrees and dessert were just shockingly disappointing.
I understand this is a brand-new restaurant and maybe we caught them on a very bad night. I hope that's the case, because I wanted to like this place. But based strictly on the food we were served, I genuinely cannot remember the last time I was this disappointed by an Italian meal.
For us, the lasagna, shrimp scampi and cannoli were all misses--and unfortunately those were the things we were most excited to try." read more
