We ate lunch at the Palace with five friends on July 13. The diner is beautiful (both inside & out), our server was superb (including very personable), the food was delicious (my husband & I ordered the mushroom focaccia sandwiches with the sweet potato fries) and everything was really spotless (including the restrooms). Unfortunately the two of us fell ill after leaving the diner and we knew the "culprit" had to be the pesto mayonnaise sauce, since there was nothing else that could have spoiled. I decided it was important to let the owners know and I called two days later. The owners (a couple who have owned the diner for about 27 years) weren't there, but I had a very pleasant conversation with the manager. He was extremely concerned, had a very kind manner and said he'd have the owner call me. She called the next day and we had a lovely conversation. Like the manager, she apologized profusely - and also like him, she said they almost never have any problems (which I certainly believed, because the cleanliness there was unusually good). She was very grateful for my call, since (as she said), most people would simply never patronize their diner again. She SAID she'd already called the Health Department and then said an inspector would visit them, to figure out a better way to serve the sauce. She also SAID she would send us a gift certificate (which was certainly appropriate) "asap".
After *two weeks* elapsed and we hadn't received the gift certificate, I was really peeved and I phoned her. I was told that she'd "just" left for vacation and would return in 2 1/2 weeks. I phoned her on the day she returned and she said she hadn't sent us the gift certificate because she'd been on vacation (uh; what about the two weeks *prior* to her departure? It sure didn't sound like she was upset about our food poisoning....). She then told me my contact information was "sitting on top of her desk" (yeah, sure) and she'd get the gift certificate sent out "right away" (I should only live so long)....I told her that we looked forward to receiving it (hint, hint) AND that my husband had just begun working only a *half-mile* from the diner - twice/week - five days before that, so I "knew he'd enjoy eating at the diner" (hint, hint). After another *nine days* elapsed without receiving the gift certificate (!), I phoned her again (there was *no* way I was going to let that gift certificate "go by the wayside" after all that, and especially because we'd felt sick for about *five days* after getting the food poisoning)! I told her we still hadn't received the certificate and she *vaguely* said she'd mailed it "at the end of last week, by certified mail". Even if she'd been telling the truth (which she most definitely was *not*), I would have already received it by that point. She then (again vaguely) said she'd check with her local post office and call me. Surprise, surprise; she *never* called me (!). I left phone messages for her two & three days later and she never called me back (but I know from the person who answered the phone that she did indeed receive my messages). After all of the aforementioned had transpired, I had a hunch she'd even lied about having called the Health Department (much less, having them visit the restaurant "right away" and being "so concerned" about my call). I had a long and pleasant conversation with an inspector at the Dutchess County Health Department on September 2 (four days after leaving my last message for the owner), and indeed she'd NEVER called them (nor, obviously, did she have them visit the restaurant)! That woman is a pathological liar, to put it mildly....in addition, she's a lousy businesswoman - because my husband would have *patronized* the diner if she hadn't behaved in such a despicable manner (!). Anyway; I filed an official complaint with the Health Department and the inspector went there on the same day (the problem, of course, was that the incident was long past). Guess what happened in the end: On September 4, I received a gift certificate via certified mail and it was coincidentally mailed on *the very same day* the inspector visited the diner! The owner enclosed a very nice note, although without any apology for - much less an allusion to - all the insanity. My husband and a colleague used the gift certificate, but otherwise we'll never again eat there. read more
