Had this bookmarked for our trip because of all of the rave reviews. We stopped in for dinner Saturday March 21 and there was barely anyone requiring service. After we walked in one of the waitresses informed us that we can sit wherever we want. I instantly felt like I was inconveniencing her with my presence by the way she said it. Didn't take it personal just yet. What appeared to be the hostess came over a few minutes after we sat down and handed us menus that were very dirty. I looked at my husband and said I am ready to walk out of this place bc I am starving and it looks like they are too short staffed right now which is understandably out of a businesses control sometimes. But wait, instead of the waitress coming to our table to bring water or ask us if we would like a drink, she went to another table with a man and a child that she obviously knew well, and started eating their french fries and talking. That's when we decided to leave and spend our money elsewhere. So unprofessional. That couldn't wait? I hate to leave a review like this, but if I was the owner of this business, I would not want someone like that working for me, representing what seems to be a great place. read more

We love it here. I have to say the bike ride over the Hudson and landing here is half the appeal. The food offerings are pretty good and come in great big portions. They have a short tap list on a chalk board over the bar area but a massive bottle and can list. Truly a beer enthusiast paradise. Prices vary but pretty much run $6-$9 per beer. Outdoor, Indoor and bar seating available, and the option to seat yourself. The vibes are perfectly set, cozy interior and chilled out tunes. Servers are fast and always kind. This place has been on my go-to list for a long time since we don't have a lot of options for good veggie burgers in the area. This was our first time visiting to highland downtown too. We loved the chill vibe of the place. Our server was very sweet. We ordered the southwest burger with a veggie patty, a Swiss mushroom burger with a veggie patty, and tofu wings with Parmesan & garlic sauce. And we ordered a mocha frappe. It's really hard to find nice frappes with no ice cream in them and this is just how I love it. Overall great experience and would love to visit again during summer. read more

We found this cute little gem looking for a local option for breakfast. This restaurant is located in an old tyme downtown area just across the Hudson from Poughkeepsie. It was a short 15 minute drive from where we were staying. There is only street parking but we were able to get a spot up front. The restaurant has a full bar and coffee bar. The menu is interesting and expansive. Service was pretty fast. The ladies behind the bar were our servers. The food was good. We had the Spanish skillet, the potato pancake and a typical egg and potato breakfast. The Latte I had was probably the best coffee I have had in months. The food was tasty. The service was good. Fell for this place by the lure of appetite inducing photos of the burger specials. Upon arrival, we discovered this was more of a coffee place with tons of seating. Utterly empty on a Sunday evening. We were the only customers. The few stragglers who came in later, came for the coffee [which this place has an ample selection of]. The baristas seem knowledgeable and adept at coffee making. As waiting staff, they are not the most involved. Spacious and casual, this place seems to be devoid of customers except a few coffee seekers, here and there. There were no specials of any kind. Just a simple menu of easy & quick to whip up half frozen food. Should have listened to recommendations and went with the spicy honey chicken sandwhich, which my bf got and enjoyed. The chicken was flavorful and tender. Not too heavy on the batter. The crunchy bacon was a nice touch. Would recommend. The mushroom swiss burger was an utter disappointment. The worst burger imaginable. The pre-frozen fast food quality patty was still cold and not fully melted when it was served. It was utterly lacking in flavor. Absolutely zero seasoning. The toppings were bland and did nothing to save this sad excuse of a burger. A toddler could've whipped up a better burger with all the ingredients at hand. Skip. Fries were of the frozen in the bag kind variety. Same goes for the onion rings. You'll feel greasy and heavy afterwards. I ordered a burger from the Underground in Highland, NY. It was the worst burger I ever ate. I do not know if it was the meat or preparation, or both. Not to mention the presentation, wrapped in paper tin foil. If I was not as hungry as I was, it would have gone in the trash. It was bad. The server was not pleasant and the cook keep giving me looks. I am not sure why I was just looking at the decor nd the different beers on the shelves. What a waste of $20.00. read more

New owners. I am so glad they finally have a solid breakfast, too! The coffee is still just as good, they have a great beer selection, and the staff is super friendly. When the best part of your dining experience was the parking - it's a problem. Whereas no one was rude, the service was terrible. The highland location is understaffed and poorly ran. Everything took forever: getting a table, getting menus, ordering your food, food to be served (came out staggered). my meal was undercooked, food was served without utensils, and we waited an eternity for the bill (even going up to them and asking for it they made a few coffees before they stopped to ring me up). There's zero opportunity to complain about your undercooked food bc once the food is served you don't see them again. I still gave 15% tip bc the reality is they need at minimum one other person to stay stationed strictly at the bar. I hope I don't get sick from the undercooked food. What's wild is that the highland location was packed and the one in new paltz is great (and one of our favorite restaurant in town). Oh and if you're going with a young child, don't expect printed menus with crayons (that's only in new paltz). Will never go to the highland location again. Cherry on top is that the coffee was just okay. So disappointed in the highland location. read more

I ordered a PLAIN burger & added avocado, onions, tomato, lettuce, and bacon. Pickles & mayo was on it which I did not ask for. So they remade it, but it was still wrong with cheese this time.... I would've just said whatever because they already remade it once but i'm lactose intolerant. I call back to ask for a refund and hear a woman in the background saying "No! She didn't say no cheese!" With a nasty attitude. The woman on the phone was kind & refunded me $21, (that's crazy price for a burger but whatever, not the point) I used to love this place but I will not be returning it's just been going down hill consistently. read more

Underground is open again! And... breakfast is back! There is a huge breakfast menu (see photo) and the kids' scrambled eggs and huevos ahogados were delicious. Coffee is great too. (I had a drip coffee--haven't tried the espresso yet.) Ambiance is pleasant and the new chairs in the front are so comfy. We could have stayed all day. Our servers were very friendly and helpful. We stumbled upon this place while driving around and exploring the area. We were glad to see outdoor seating and decided to have a quick lunch. The staff was great and accommodating especially since we were eating with a toddler. The hot chicken sandwich with salad was delicious. It could have been a bit more spicy, but it was juicy and tasty. We also had a burger with onion rings and a grilled cheese. The onion rings? Amazing! Soooo goood! They had a nice selection of beers on tap and a cute little beer store to take some stuff home. I was excited to do a little shopping while waiting for our lunch. I was so excited to go here based on the reviews. Sadly I did not have the experience and meals others have had. A place that has beer in it's name I would think would have, but they are under new management, so zero beer. The ambiance was cool, but very dirty. Bathroom smelled horrible. Service was nice. Our waitress did the best she good but it felt like she needed more training. And my chicken sandwich tasted old, dry, and twice fried. Onion rings were great though. I've been to Underground a few times...usually when after a bike ride on the trail trail, but decided to stop in on a Friday night. While they were busy, the service seemed to be really lacking. The waitress didn't know/offer specials and also never checked in while dining to even suggest another round of beer. I had the fried chicken sandwich special that had mashed potatoes, gravy, corn and slaw on it. The chicken was perfectly fried but was fresh and could have used salt. The French fries made up for it. Stopped by here on a long voyage upstate. Checked around for a good coffee shop and saw this place had the highest reviews around and made a deliberate stop to try it out. First thing I noticed was that it was a brewery as well as a coffee shop. I am not much of an alcohol enthusiast so much of the appeal may have been lost on me. The barista didn't seem too aware of their coffee menu items so I just got what ever was in season. I ordered the apple pie latte which was recommended and it tasted like any ordinary latte with apple cinnamon syrup. Unfortunately, I did not enjoy this place too much but don't let this review discourage you if you are interested in their alcoholic menu. read more

My mom recommended we hit up Underground Coffee and Ales after ogling their many delicious sandwiches on Instagram. Let me just say they did NOT disappoint. The staff was super friendly and all the food looked so good. They had so many different drinks to choose from. My mom ended up getting a to try some of the different beers on tap. We split a pesto chicken sandwich and it was so good. We got a side salad with the most delicious champagne vinaigrette. It doesn't look like much when you're passing by, but Underground has really good food and drinks. Their portions are pretty big and the burgers and fried chicken sandwiches are incredible. Any time I was looking for a good burger/sandwich without too long of a drive from Poughkeepsie, this is where I would go. Underground is one of those reliable places you can always count on for good coffee, beer, and food. I had to be in Poughkeepsie for an appointment, so I thought I'd give this place another chance this morning. I was surprised, when I walked in, to see only one woman sitting at a table. Well, turns out they don't have Wifi. The gal behind the counter said the owners don't want people just sitting there on their laptops. I explained to her that the places that have Wifi have customers who come every day and eat and drink and spend money. No one stays all day or takes up a space someone else wants. This has become one of my go to spots for a snack and a beer. I love the staff, their on tap choices rotate but are never disappointing and the food is always delicious. You can't go wrong with any of their burgers or sandwiches. And the house cheese for the pretzel is superb. read more

My husband and I went to lunch last week. I was very hungry and ordered, I think it was called, "The Highlander". If you are a fan of poached egg dishes that are over the top, I highly recommend. It was on grilled brioche, grilled halomi cheese sauteed spinach, avocado, dressed cherry tomatoes along with the eggs. I ate the WHOLE thing. Plus! It came with spanish style breakfast potatoes which I had to take home. Our server, Erin, is one of the former owners and she is one of the sweetest most accomodating people around. We stopped here after walking over the "walk across the Hudson " bridge on the Highland side. It is a wonderful place for coffee & they serve bar style food. I do wish they offered dessert items to go with the coffee. We had three different types of hot beverages & was pleased with all of them. They even kept a tab for our drinks! You can buy a round for the kitchen for $7 which we did although we didn't eat anything. I like that they cater to everyone & will go back because that was meaningful to me & of course I enjoyed the drinks. The staff was wonderful & they checked on us from time to time but not too much. Forget a Popeyes Chicken Sandwich! This place has the most tastiest, juiciest, crispy, flavorful chicken sandwich that I have had in my life! There was more chicken than bread! I order the Maui with and extra side of Polynesian Sauce and my mouth is still watering just thinking about it! I love food that make my taste buds tingle! They also have a great selection of ales from on tap, to bottle, to cans! I had an amazing Banana Stout. I also sampled a Rose Cider, and a cheesecake sour. This super cute family friendly cafe/bar, is a great place to grub, play board games, study, whatever floats boat really. They have plenty of options for beer, and if you happen to find yourself stuck between a couple options, the bartender may likely let you give them a try. I was out exploring with a friend who moved to the Hudson Valley from the Bay Area, I also just moved back, so finding a spot like this was a pleasant surprise.
