I visited Blue Collar Brewery on Saturday afternoon. I was visiting the Poughkeepsie area for the day so I could cycle the Rail Trail. I thought it would be fun to stop and visit some area breweries on my return trip. Fifth stop of the day: Blue Collar Brewery. It's located in an old meat packing building in downtown Poughkeepsie. I ordered a taster flight of various mixed styles. Decent selections; I think their Cream Ale was my favorite. It was a refreshing brew after a long bicycle ride. Blue Collar is actually a brewpub that normally has sandwiches and other various hot dishes, but I was informed that their kitchen was closed indefinitely. I wasn't too sure why the kitchen was closed, but they did at least have some bags of chips/pretzels to munch on per COVID rules and regulations. After finishing my beer flight, I hopped back on the bike and was on my way. Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. I would visit again if I'm in the area again. read more

Went here for a beer and a snack on Saturday night with my boyfriend today and sat at the bar. There are tables if you want to come for a meal. Their beers doesn't have names, just type or a number which is different. My bf had the #8 IPA which was pretty good, not bad but not amazing. There were a few different types of beer which is nice to have variety. We got the fries with horseradish mayo (special request and extra $). They were right out the frier which was great. For me, my overall impression of Blue Collar Brewery is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. I liked the beers (especially the ESB and their Smoked Brown Porter) though they aren't necessarily my favorite beers in the area (hey, gotta shop around). I didn't get to sample much off the menu my first time here, because I was taking advantages of their happy hour wings and their Monday night taco special. I enjoy the setting and the ambiance. Our waitress really took care of us too. My moment came at one point while I was snacking on one of the wings (I can't remember if it was a Buffalo wing or a Thai chili) followed immediately by a sip of ESB. It was one of those moments when the food and the beer paired perfectly... and that was just with the apps. I have to believe (or hope) that the same will happen here when I can return and order heartier meals. For all their goodness - when you get your bill, ITEMIZE IT. For some bizarre reason, if you order something for which there are multiple sizes/options, the information on your receipt may not correlate. The most recent time I was here, the itemized listing of our orders did not come up with the same total as the food and drink totals at the bottom. This was because while I ordered a large salad, it rings up as small under itemization but is correctly totaled at the bottom. Came here after seeing it opened on November 9th, just to give it a try. Although it's in the middle of downtown Poughkeepsie, this place stands out, and is warm and inviting. The brick architecture, mixed with Edison bulbs and iron, give Blue Collar Brewing a trendy, Gastropub feel, without pretension. The beer selection is limited to four options at the moment, which may attractive or dissuading, depending on your craft beer pub expectations. There are also wines available, all from LOCAL vineyards. I tried the IPA (awesome), the Smoked Brown Porter (light and bold at the same time), and the Cream Ale (goes down smooth with a light balance of hops). As expected during an opening week, the service was good, but kitchen was a little slow. The food is pub fare, served in baskets, and is tasty. We tried the Steak Sandwich (like a cheese streak) and the Fish and Chips (one of the best - not greasy) and were very satisfied! The menu is broken into "shifts" - first, second third... - depending on how much food you'd like. This plays into their theme very well. As soon as they hire an executive chef, this place will surely be a great spot for any occasion. After walking down the hallway entrance, you'll pass by the Brew tanks on your left, and the open kitchen on your right. There's a 15 person bar against the back wall, as well as tables and an upstairs. All seats have great views of the 8 TVs, and there's plenty of standing room in the event all seats are taken. The bar also has growlers for filling. Before you go, check out their website. Blue Collar Brewing explains their business model, which hopes to incorporate the history of Poughkeepsie, and service anyone who just wants to sit down and have a good beer. They've taken the time to upgrade this building, beautifully, and have preserved the atmosphere of the working factory it used to be. Prior to going, I knew exactly what to expect in terms of their goals for the business. They hit the mark. If you want a chill place to watch a game, or meet friends, or grab a bite, or do happy hour, this is the place. I've been to Mill House and Shatzi's many times, and love them both. However, this place is unique and won't disappoint. I actually prefer fewer selections of beer, knowing that the Brewmasters have taken the time to pick out only the best flagship beers to serve. Don't care for the selection here. Very meat centric and fried foods. Table ordered wings since they are on special before 6 and they were good. Buffalo and Thai - both were HOT! Others ordered the ground beef tacos for $1.50. Reports were they were ok. Hubs and I shared pretzel bites that were pretty awful. Pretzel dough was tough, some undercooked and some started to get hard after a few minutes. Cheddar ale sauce seemed to have too much flour in it. This was a pretty place to check out on a Tuesday night. From the outside it just looks like another building in Poughkeepsie, inside it was a pleasant surprise. When you first walk in, on your left, you can see their brewing machine down below, straight back is their bar and seating area. They do have a kitchen if you would like to get something to eat while you enjoy a beer. I was not quite sure what I wanted so I asked for their 5 - 5oz flight and this included all their beers except one. Every beer I tried was good with the Smoked Brown Porter and IPA #8 being my favorites. I have never had a beer quite like the Smoked Porter and enjoyed it so much that I bought a growler. The gentleman behind the bar was very friend and explained to me that him and his father own the brewery, and he helps make the beer. Great place to stop by, can't wait to try their food. read more

On my short trip to Poughkeepsie I was able to visit Hyde Park Brewing Co., Mill House Brewing Co. and Blue Collar Brewery. Of these each were respectively good places, however Blue Collar really stood out. They had an unique atmosphere, the beers weren't the typical "hoppy as hell" IPA's etc. They had a very unique flavor, and really took the time to understand their beers. The bartender was the Owner / brewmaster's (owner) Father. Who was not overly pretentious and understood that he may have gotten his son into brewing, but that the brewmaster knew about the beer. Both of the others were like 3-4 stars, but they were definite tourist traps that focused more on getting the people driving through vs. establishing regulars or their own identity. The steak sliders that they had today were amazing and balanced perfectly with the beer. The most important item that stood out to me however was the story about the location of North Poughkeepsie that they chose, the fact that many people look at it as a sketchy neighborhood (it definitely appears so) but that because of this project they are able to expand into other real estate projects around and give back to the community that they live in and hopefully turn the place back around.b read more

Can't see what all the hype is about. The beer was alright, tried the #8 Ipa and golden strong ale. The service was horrible, ordered food and took 40 minutes to get to our table (there were two other tables there one of which was already done eating and one that got their food a few minutes after we were seated). My buffalo chicken wrap looked like it had one measly chicken tender throughout the whole thing, a bunch of lettuce and they forgot to put blue cheese dressing on it. My wife's cheesesteak was decent but the beer cheese sauce that they put on top of it was ice cold, and the fries (which they charge extra for) were so salty she didn't even eat them. The Waitress forgot all about our appetizer that we ordered and only stopped by our table once. Got tired of waiting for the waitress so I got up and had to get my own drink at the bar. Waitress was too busy talking to another waitress over by where they prepare the food while the poor bartender was taking people's Drinks at the bar and busing tables. They ended up comping my buffalo chicken wrap that is the reason I gave 2 stars instead of one. We asked for the bill and the waitress took so long, even after telling her we were on a time limit, that we finally just got up to find her to pay. The waitresses definitely need To take more pride in their job. They should hire a CIA grad or student to take over the kitchen because the food is definitely lacking. Blue Collar is a relatively new Brewery that has done a fantastic job of incorporating old and new with their building. Located within an old factory type facility, they have maintained the old charm of exposed brick interior while modernizing it as well. I wasn't sure what to expect when walking in, but the first impression was absolutely positive. A group of us sat in the main bar section. Plenty of tables available for groups, and if you're into just sitting directly at the bar, you have that option as well. So onto what matters most, the beers. After trying the ESB and Cream Ale, my positive impression continued. The beers were fantastic and I'm itching to try the rest (wasn't in a flight mood this evening). The cream ale was bit on the lighter side, but went well with the wings I was eating at the time. The ESB was advertised as a more "bitter" beer, but I didn't get that impression from trying it. The food menu has several sandwich and fried options. This particular night was $1.50 beef Taco night, so that took precedence over the other items. I ended up eating 5 (what? I'm a growing boy!) And found them to be just ok. I don't think you can expect a whole lot out of $1.50 tacos, but they were filling, and grew increasingly more tasty with each beer (and with the addition of hot sauce). I'll definitely have to return to try the other menu items. Also, there was a vegetarian sandwich option for those curious. There's a small parking lot across the street and plenty of street parking available. Its not the worst neighborhood in Poughkeepsie, but certainly not the best either. The staff was overwhelmingly friendly and our waitress was spot on. Never had to turn my head more than once to find her. Blue Collar is a pretty upscale brewpub considering the name. Still, it does have an atmosphere of hard work and gumption which translates to the beer. The building itself it huge though the lot is pretty small, but the bar area and table room isn't that big. A lot of room is taken up by the long kitchen and the lower level fermentation tanks, which you can walk over on a catwalk that feels vaguely Star Wars like. The beer is pretty good, with a strong dunkelweizen offering and several hoppier beers. Service was pretty good and very friendly, though didn't check up that often. The several tvs above the bar made it a nice place for watching games too. read more

This place is great. Really cool open building plan kicks it right off. From there, I'm a sucker for IPAs, and I always go straight for the #8. I love the beer, but the food may be even better. I was one week removed from having what was maybe the worst Reuben sandwich I've ever eaten and needed to have one to recharge my faith. I was not disappointed. The whole menu looks delicious. The only bad thing about BCB is that I live 45 minutes away. I wish I was only five away. This is my favorite brewery in the Hudson Valley at the moment. Old converted factory, now housing this brewery/restaurant. They brew their own beer, which was really good. The waitress was excellent - upbeat, not pushy, genuinely nice, and guided our meal really well. The food was OK, maybe a 6 out of 10, perhaps a 7. It was good, but nothing great.
