I can't believe I haven't written up a review yet for this spot because I have been here countless times. The duality of the place is exceptional because you can get customized malatang with all the add ins you could want but also a whole chicken, shrimp burger, and even chicken feet. One of my biggest pro tips is getting their spicy chicken rolls for the plane when traveling. It's super compact, can last overnight, and is flavorful without having a strong smell. I'm also a big big fan of the spicy chicken sandwich which is pretty simple with just lettuce added on but so good. Don't miss out on the popcorn chicken either. It's all fresh made-to-order and the breading, especially the spicy blend is delicious. Parking can be tricky but I often get lucky finding street parking.
Food was fast with options for varying levels of spiciness as well as different soup bases. However the selection of vegetables and meat were limited. Some the veges, meat, and tofu were not very clean. The popcorn chicken was surprisingly good. Probably one of the best I've had. Service was fast. The name of the place is actually Overlord Chicken.
My partner and I came by overlord chicken after I mentioned repeatedly that I would like to try their fried chicken & mala tang again. Service is good, more self service leaning, you just go and order at the counter and cashier will bring the order to you. The mala tang process goes, grab a bowl, pick out desired items, choose broth & spice level, they will weight, you pay, they prep and bring it out. Their selections for the mala tang is less than before and is now 19.99/LBS, with a 0.9lbs minimum. We got the traditional spicy level 2 and it was solid, not too spicy and good to enjoy and even drink the broth. We also got one spicy chicken leg and 2 drumsticks. The chicken were all very crispy and juicy. Not SUPER flavorful as I would've liked but good enough to stand against other standard fried chicken spots. It was clearly fried and made fresh though, as it was piping hot. We would definitely come back again, it was solid semi fast last night "comfort" food.
It's all about the food here at Overlord which is very good. Known for their fried chicken, this is an absolute must. The menu is diverse so feel free to be adventurous. While parking is limited, you can find street parking in front of the restaurant and on surrounding side streets. Service here is friendly and the restaurant itself is intimate. Definitely get a whole fried chicken and some sides. Really really delicious. It's BYOB here too, so if you want to to enjoy some...bring some.

I would want more higher options for that price. got their Tomato base with spicy level 3 and Bone broth spicy level 2. both were good but the bone broth one is a little bland. Spicy level 2 and 3 are both spicy so be careful. Also got their Combo #4 chicken, comes 4 ways which is a great deal and great amount. also really good flavors too. young lady in the front doesn't speak much english, so anything out of her script, she won't understand. Food takes about 20 mins to come out during 6-8pm so be prepared to wait a little. Tables inside are limited so grab a table after you order
Mixed bag... We came here because a rave review from a YouTuber. Good news is their Combo #6 is a great deal which is more than enough food for 3 for less than $60. This comes with popcorn chicken, strips, sandwiches whole fried chicken fries and drinks. Out of all of the food, chicken sandwich is hands down the best. Crispy and moist and even has a hint of heat. One of the better sandwiches out there. Popcorn chicken is ok... Nice balance of meat and coating. Same for strips. Whole chicken came out temperature hot. Skin is very crispy and meat is moist. What's wrong? No flavor at all in the skin or meat.. as if trying to reduce the sodium for the meal. Very disappointed. Fries is ok.. Took a while to get the food and AC was broken. Summer months will be brutal. Recommend take out. The place is new so decor is nice and clean. Interesting.. most of the diners opted for their make your own soup (btw is by pound and minimum is $20).

Obviously her mind is somewhere else . I walk out . No time with deal with ppl like that . Walk down Vietnamese noodles place much better service and great food .
One of my FAVORITE restaurants! I personally love mala and anything Chinese herb (numbing sensation) so I was happy to find out that they reopened in Kapahulu. The restaurant is joint with the Overlord Chicken. Parking is available on Kapahulu or we usually find a spot on Date street and walk over. The ingredients seem to be fresh every time we go in and the service is quick and friendly. They charge you by the weight (you choose what to put in your soup) and for a pretty big amount, we were charged about $20 per person. I definitely recommend this place if you enjoy Chinese hot pot!
Drove along Kapahulu Ave and noticed the signs for Mala Tang at 'Overlord Fried Chicken'. We wanted to try and found street parking - a stall available right in front. It was our first time there, so we took time to figure out the picture menus and concept for the Mala Tang. Slight language barrier with the worker but we ordered 2 bowls of Mala Tang with fried chicken & sausages to share. Asian bottled drinks available in the fridge. Casual seating area available to eat there. We waited as our food was freshly made to order. I had the Spicy Beef Noodle Soup... spice level 2 was perfect for me - slight kick. Hubz got the Spicy Bowl with rice... spice level 4. Bowls were great... and the standout was their Fried Chicken - perfectly seasoned and fried with a beautiful crispy coating. No wonder they are called 'Overlord Chicken' - their chicken is truly supreme with masters in the kitchen. We enjoyed the fried Taiwan Sausages too. All in all, a wonderful 1st experience here, and we would definitely return.
This was a wonderful late(ish) night place, however, there is a lack of parking. There's street parking but that's always a hit or miss. They were completely empty when our party arrived, but that was worked out in our favor as we didn't realize how small the dine in area was. We were able to push almost all of the tables together and fit our large party of 25 people. There are so many options offered and we ordered a bunch of options to split amongst the table family style. We also got the build your own spicy hot pot which was delicious! Unfortunately, you also have to walk outside to the back of the restaurant to use their bathroom which isn't super clean, and as it was late at night, I needed someone to walk with me around the corner for safety.

Great to see that they now have their own restaurant with an expanded menu including fried chicken and Mala Tang + Free street parking along Date St, or metered street parking in front of the restaurant on Kapahulu. + Build-Your-Own hot pot / Mala tang / noodles is a lot of fun. + Choose your own numbing and spicy options. Tucked into a spot with serious dive bar energy with loud flavors and great tastes, this place feels like the kind of place you stumble into at midnight and never want to leave. The kitchen here is a straight-up flavor laboratory run by mad geniuses in aprons. The fried chicken is not just fried it's baptized in flavor. Perfectly crisp on the outside, gloriously tender on the inside, and seasoned like someone dared them to go too far and thank God they did. You can go classic, get lit with the hot, or go full Overlord and let the spice obliterate your taste buds in the best way possible. Their crispy, spicy, juicy excellence comes in steaming hot with serious intentions to conquer your hunger and burn your tastebuds. But wait, it gets better. The dumpling soup here is criminally underrated. Big portions with insane flavors! This is not the place for a polite salad. This is where you roll up your sleeves, destroy a plate of wings, sip something strong and cold, and leave wondering what just happened (but in a good way). Come hungry. Leave conquered. All hail the Overlord.
* Food poisoned* 4am in the morning and still in the toilet:( Went here around 11pm with co-wokers after a busy night of working. I ordered a comb 2 which includes a chicken sandwich, fried chicken leg, a French fries and a soda. I asked for spicy for my sandwich and fried chicken legs. After first bite of the sandwich, I realized that it's not spicy at all, so I asked the guy, are these all spicy? he said yes, and I told him it's not spicy at all. Guess what? He just ignored me and walked away. So I left no tips for him. ( I was gonna give cash after eating) Never come back again, not just because of food poisoning, but also because of bad service, and the way they handle the situation.

Always hits the spot if you want a hearty soup. They have a lot of the standard protein options (like beef, pork, tofu, fish balls, etc), veggies, and various types of noodles. I usually get the traditional broth which is soo flavorful and robust. I tried the pork broth this time and it was still good (like tonkotsu ramen), but prefer the traditional. Workers are friendly and service is quick. Parking is tough since it's in kapahulu. You might get lucky with the street parking right in front of the restaurant, but if not just park by the golf course and walk. read more
Their noodles had the perfect amount of spice and you could adjust the spice levels. I also love the service here! The waiter is very attentive, and he pays attention to your needs and if you need something and he is very helpful and kind. I also love how they had some Chinese music playing in the background as well. read more

Chinese style fried chicken -good late night spot when you can't decide what to eat! Also serving noodles and tea/smoothie drinks. Food: Around $26 Total Spicy & Original Chicken Sandwich $7.99 each Spicy Chicken Popcorn $5.95 French Fries $3.69 The Chicken was surprisingly very juicy and crispy. Love the bite size popcorn chicken. The chicken sandwiches come with mayo and lettuce inside. Three sauces provided: ranch, ketchup, BBQ. The fries reminded me of McDonald's French fries, but better. A good portion to share as well. It did get a little salty near the end of the meal, but overall a solid meal. It satisfied my craving for fried chicken. Service was nice and efficient. Food only took about 15 minutes. They serve your food in trays and provide water and sauces. Clean space, bright lights inside, cameras, comfortable chairs. About 5 tables. Parking: really hard to find since it's mostly street parking available. We ended up parking at the Safeway lot and walking 5 minutes over. Food: 4/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 4/5 I would come back! I decided to check this place out today at 6PM and had a great experience! The staff are very sweet and helpful. I had to wait for a table, but the staff kindly gave me a lollipop for waiting lol. Good amount of toppings to choose from, but in the future I hope to see more meat options. My bowl weighed a bit under 0.9lbs, and I paid $16.20. I had level 1 spiciness of the traditional broth. Personally I'd say my spice tolerance is good, but I thought it was pretty spicy. Overall I really enjoyed the flavor of this broth. I had trouble finding parking, as there are only 4 street parking stalls in front. I parked at the Jamba lot and walked over. Also FYI, this location is shared with Overlord Chicken. Happy to recommend this location! read more

Ordered with uber eats. Came packaged well. Spicy beef broth was flavorful a bit salted. Beef brisket was tender. Ordered the corn and it was unique cheesy and creamy a little sweet. Overall ok - I think it would Be better to dine in. read more

Overlord chicken opened a couple years ago on Kapahulu where a Thai restaurant used to be. It's pretty conveniently located for me, or anyone else traveling into Waikiki on the Kapahulu side, but there is no parking. There are maybe 5 street parking stalls that are free, so I only have been to Overlord chicken a couple times when I was able to snag a parking spot. The great thing about this place is that they're open late. I believe they're open past midnight, which is basically unheard of in the Hawaii restaurant scene. Would you call this a restaurant? It's more like a take out place that happens to have some tables and chairs. I also like that they have milk tea and fruit teas in addition to fountain drinks. In my most recent visit, I got the combo 4. Mostly because it didn't come with a fountain drink and I knew I wanted to get an iced tea. Secondly, combo 4 comes with a bunch of different things to try and I love trying all the things. The popcorn chicken and chicken tenders tasted pretty much the same... I'd get those again. I liked dipping them in the spicy powder. The wings were also good. The non battered wings had an interesting, slightly spicy flavor. I liked the variety in combo 4, but my husband wants to try the chicken sandwich next time we go :) I also got a side of the spicy sausage skewers. It came with 3 sticks and the sauce was kind of like a sweet ketchup? It wasn't very spicy. I'll probably pass on this next time. The lychee Jasmine tea was good. A little s wet but I liked the lychee jellies and canned lychee fruit. The food took about 15 minutes to prepare. I would have called in my order, but I wanted to see the real menu before I went in. I noticed some of the sides and drinks were different from the posted menu. The prices were also different. My only gripe about this place is that there are hardly prices anywhere. I don't know how much my drink or sides cost and even though I got a receipt, it wasn't itemized. read more

Finally got to try overlord chicken, and it was delicious! Service is great, and if you like mala (numbing) spice, you'll love their noodle/dry pot selection. The chicken is also very tender, breaded lightly, and crispy. The beef noodle soup is delicious and gets spicy if you want it to be, and the veggies & noodles are authentic. The only comment is the beef cuts weren't the best and were more tendony, but if you like that then you will love the beef noodles. Inside has limited seating but it moves pretty quickly. Parking is tougher but you can find some around the neighborhood. read more

Such a funny name but the chicken was seriously good. I've had the fried whole chicken (I asked them to cut it for me) and it was cut in quarters. Tender and juicy chicken that cooked to order (it would take 15 minutes) but it was worth the wait. This is a fast food casual restaurant that specializing in chicken but they're also serving the Yi Pin Mala Tang hot pot (you pick the ingredients / meat / vegetables, soup base) and they make it for you. Next time I will try the hot pot, but with the name like this "Overlord Chicken" I knew I've made a right decision. read more

I eat here so often...not sure how I have yet to post a review. I often crave malatang and this is the only option on island. They don't have a sauce bar, but I like their options for noodles and toppings. Only meat option is beef; they don't offer pork lamb or chicken. Soup and spice is very yummy. Wish there were more malatang options here or if they added more meats and a sauce bar that'd be 10000000000/10. Love this place nonetheless. read more
When I heard the same OVERLORD Chicken, I was surprised by the name as I've never heard the word in a long long time, and let's be honest, it's a random name. But don't let that stop you as they may very well be the Overlord of Chinese style fried chicken in Hawaii. This place is located along Kapahulu Ave., across from Taco Bell and next to Da Ono Hawaiian Foods. This space was previously a Chinese restaurant, then Thai, and something else that didn't last long. Only metered and street parking here. A majority is fried foods at Overlord Chicken. Besides fried chicken (grilled is an option), there's sandwiches (fish and shrimp available), wraps, and fried skewers. There are combo meals. The best one of you want to try most of their chicken items is #4. You get 4 Spicy Chicken Wings, 4 Grilled Chicken Wings, Popcorn Chicken, and Chicken Tenders (no soda). The Spicy Wings were good. A really nice spice kick, and the chicken meat is juicy, tender, meaty, and tasty. Battered and fried very well to a nice crunch. Look out Popeyes! I like the Grilled Wings better. Quite tasty and flavorful with the meat tender and juicy. Chicken Tenders were okay. Least favorite. Not much meat, not much taste, dry, and more batter than meat. Best was the Popcorn Chicken. These are usually dry and bland at other places, but the one here was tasty and flavorful. The meat was warm and tender. Also had a nice spice kick. Overall, Overlord Chicken was surprisingly very good. Enjoyed the combo meal, and will definitely come back to try items. Service was solid and quick. Another plus is they stay open quite late--past midnight. So any late night snack hankering can be satisfied! read more
I love fried chicken and the fried chicken here is pretty good. Wings are my favorite and I wish that they had them not spicy. Unfortunately, all their wings are spicy. It's mixed in with the flour that they batter the wings in. The cashier told me it wasn't that spicy, but it was. I ordered Combo 4 which came with 4 wings, 4 grilled wings, popcorn chicken and chicken tenders. They were out of grilled wings, so they subbed it fried wings instead. They told me when I ordered and I was ok with it. I got the popcorn chicken non spicy and it was delicious. I love their bbq sauce. If you remember Pioneer Chicken from back in the day, it tasted like that sauce. My hubby dislikes fried chicken. You know there's a stigma about African Americans and fried chicken. Well, I think that Asians like fried chicken more. I certainly like fried chicken more than he does. The only three story Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant that I've seen in my life was in Taiwan. True story! I couldn't believe my eyes. This is the first Chinese fried chicken spot to open up on the island I believe. They said that it's from China. I also got their Mango Sago drink. This was magnificent. It was so good that my eyes popped out of my head. The best mango drink that I've had in my life and I drink a lot of mango drinks. Happy National Fried Chicken Day! I great and real reason to finally give this place a visit woohooo!!! Located right in the busiest part of Kapahulu parking is the real luck of the draw and it did take me a few circles to find one (all are metered stalls) though if you're willing to walk nearby Date Street does have a few street parking as well. What a cute bright and airy spacious place as soon as you enter the vibe is an modern artsy filled with what looks like KAWS characters with a happy astronaut right beside the multiplex drinks station and fun airplane lighting fixtures. Fried Chicken!!! Yass all kinds from popcorn, skewers, wings, tenders to wraps, sandwich and yes what they're know for the whole "Overlord Chicken" deep fried or grilled ala carte or get a combo deal from the stardard sandwich, fries and drinks or the "off the above" set that literally has it all!! I was just looking for a snack and decided to get a couple of things..."Chicken roll - Spicy" and "Chicken Leg" and understandably it's all made to order so if you're in a time constraint ordering ahead is recommended as there was only one other person there yet my two items did take awhile. The Chicken rolls was good nothing I'd really get again it came with a couple of tenders lettuce and tomatoes...no sauce which is probably what the ketchup packets given was for I assume but did remember they had some BBQ sauce and ranch at the condiments area so it was my haste and not asking it had some sauce. The chicken leg was just exactly that, a nice size piece fried beautifully crispy and so juicy it was very nice. Staff here is friendly and patient as I was so indecisive making sure I don't get too much but not as informative on wait time just basically there to take my order but did love their chicken and will be back here besides the usual chains restaurants as getting more than what's needed is not golden. This place is super fun because you can choose your own ingredients to make a bowl or choose a pre made bowl. I opted to pick things from the bar that had meat, vegetables and noodles. You need to have a minimum of 0.9 lbs if you do this option. I believe it was $17.99 a lb. You can choose your broth and the spicy level, I opted for medium which was actually pretty spicy. The only thing I wished for was a more temperature hot broth. But the workers were very nice and friendly. The restaurant also has some seating inside so it's nice to be able to dine in if you can find street parking. read more

Discovered this place via yelp, and decided to give it a try, as my friend was craving fried chicken. I ordered 2 spicy wings, spicy popcorn chicken, and Jasmine lychee tea. The food came out relatively quickly, and it was piping hot when it arrived. The chicken was very crispy. My only complaint is that it wasn't very spicy and lacked flavor. Popeyes is right across the street, and I'd prefer a chicken wing or drumstick from them instead for the spice. That said, the chicken here is a good price. The Jasmine lychee tea was mid. I'm glad I got a drink to wash down the crunchy chicken, but I'd just get their free water next time. read more
All this time I am reading this biz as "Overload" Chicken, when I pass by after Popeyes but after stopping by, I realized I read the business name wrong. It is "Overlord" Chicken. hehe.Overlord Chicken, very interesting business name. Another chicken spot right across of another chicken spot, competition and I am confident Overlord will survive. After reading the great reviews and seeing the photos, I had to stop by to give it a try. I can see it is totally different type of chicken, Taiwanese style as I read. I placed my order, a little after 5 pm, probably didn't catch the rush yet. Food was ready in 10 mins. when I arrived they were about finishing up so not much of a wait. I ordered spicy popcorn chicken, spicy chicken sandwich, and fries. I requested for sandwich to be cut in half which I was happy to see they didn't miss that. The prices are reasonable. Yep. couldn't wait, we munched on the spicy popcorn chicken and fries in the car, on the way to our destination and WOW, I loved the popcorn chicken! I didn't see any spicy seasoning as its already marinated in the chicken. The spicy chicken is spicy & crispy! I think this is the best popcorn chicken I've ever had. The fries are not as crispy, but I love that it is soft and soggy. lol We had the chicken sandwich an hour later so it wasn't as fresh and I don't recall the sandwich was spicy. The restaurant is nice and clean, there are tables to utilize. Service was great Call in order for less wait and best to eat enjoy your Overlord Chicken hot and fresh, right out of the fryer! Don't forget to grab the condiments near cashier. I needed ketchup, ranch, & BBQ sauce. All in all, I am happy I got to give try this local biz a try., made me curious every single time I pass by. I will be back especially for the popcorn chicken and I think I am going to get one of the combo sets, the one that has all of the different chickens for $19.99. Thanks to my elite friend Toan, I have been hearing how good this fried chicken with a kick is! The other evening a bunch of us found ourselves within a block away and happy to graze a sampling. So glad we did! Overlord Chicken has now earned a place in my top few fried chicken places! Four of us arrived and ordered the combo #4 which is THE PERFECT combo for sampling. We enjoyed trying the regular chicken wings, the grilled (BBQ) chicken wings, chicken tenders and the milder popcorn chicken. All delicious. All super crunchy. The chicken tenders with a panko crusted crunch. Full of flavor. The chicken is tender, moist, CRISPY yet not oily. Love that the chicken is nicely seasoned but not as salty as some others. Love also that there are a few tables/seats, nice strong air-conditioning, and restrooms on premise. The only thing little lacking is only street/metered and residential parking. Small problem. It's Kapahulu, the East gateway to Waikiki! Located just across the street from Popeyes. The convenient late closing hours makes this the perfect place to grab a bite almost any time of the day/evening! read more

Overlord Chicken is located on Kapahulu (across from Taco Bell). This Chinese chicken place serves an assortment of fried chicken and grilled chicken as well. I have tried a lot of their things already and I was surprised how crispy and tasty their chicken is. Some of my favorites are the popcorn chicken, chicken fillets (taste like chicken katsu), Overlord chicken (whole fried chicken) and their shrimp burger. You also get dipping sauces and spices. I thought the prices are pretty reasonable and they make it fresh which is why it can take a little long sometimes. They're open late till 2am which is awesome because we're always looking for a late night spot to grab food. Customer service is friendly and the place is nice and clean. Seating is available inside. Only downfall is the parking which is just street parking. Thankfully we were able to find one pretty easily. read more
*3.5* If you like chicken this is the spot! They make everything to order so it's guaranteed fresh. The only additional side they offer is fries. The service is good and they are open really late, 2AM I believe. They were a little light on the seasoning, I found some items bland while others had tons of flavor - but overall it was good. Chicken wrap: good amount of chicken and tastes better than it looks. Definitely needed the sauce. Popcorn chicken: we got the spicy and it was a very subtle but good level of heat. You don't feel the heat until after, like a slow burn. Could use a little more seasoning (salt?). It was very bouncy, crispy and the chicken was good quality. Grilled wings: didn't have much flavor. Pistol Leg: we got spicy and this was loaded with flavor! It reminded me of Popeyes spicy chicken (flavor wise) but fresh and not as oily. The spice was different on this one, much more heavy and I could feel it in my stomach. French fries: fresh fried potatoes! They look similar to McDonald's but taste better. Crisp with pure potato flavor and it does not have that signature oil/fry smell like McDonald's. They offer ketchup, ranch, bbq sauce, and some powder seasoning, although I think it would be better if they had more dipping sauce options. Some of the chicken was lacking in flavor but very good overall! Next time I'll try the whole fried chicken. read more
