Visited this weekend for the first time. We were quoted 45 minutes or less for an indoor table for two. We accepted the wait time and headed to the bar area for coffee and bloody Mary's. After waiting for 40 minutes we decided to ask if we could order a side of potatoes to eat at the bar (we were starving!) and our request was declined. The drinks were tasty, but nothing to write home about. After over an hour wait we received a table and were so happy. Our happiness soon ended when we tried to ask our server a few questions about the menu. She was unhelpful and incredibly rude to us. I haven't experienced such poor service in ages. In addition to the poor service, our eggs were terribly undercooked. We will not be back and I would not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I went in for dinner last night with my girlfriend and had a pretty disappointing experience. I don't usually write yelp reviews, but as someone in the industry who lives in the neighborhood and has been here a handful of times, I feel compelled. Things started off fine, we ordered some appetizers and a couple glasses of wine. Our server was pretty attentive and we ordered our entrees, the salmon and the pork chop. When they arrived my girlfriends salmon was way over salted and my pork chop was raw. Literally raw. I had to flag down the server, who seemed a bit flustered, and instead of apologizing she basically made me feel like an idiot, telling me it should be medium rare like I've never eaten a pork chop before. She offered to throw it back in and it came back still a little under done so I ate what I could and packed up the rest. The server basically ignored us the rest of the night. We ordered some cookies to go that were pretty good, but I don't get it. This place seems to be going downhill and I hope they get it together cause the decor is awesome, but there's a weird vibe. In a city plentiful of amazing restaurants, I'd take your money elsewhere for now. read more

Rotating menu which is nice. Variety per day is always different. Good draft beers on tap. At times it can be noisy during a rush, but other times it can be a nice "chill" location. I've had the grilled cheese and tomato bisque before which was delicious. My only complaint would be about the amount of cheese on the amazing fresh loaf of bread. The other things we have tried are waffles, poached eggs, and for dinner a grilled piece of pork. read more

Holy shit this place is amazing. Do yourself a favor and try the almond butter toast with greens... this is an unbelievable breakfast spot.

If you're coming for brunch on the weekends, be here when they open! A party of four, we had the broccoli & mushroom egg dish with mushrooms and quinoa, the savory pancake (bacon, aioli, arugula, pear) with ricotta and a fancy version of what we called growing up 'bunnies in a hole', here called Eggs in Jail with bacon, arugula & pear. Went to dinner here tonight with my son who lives in SF, AMAZING!! Great ambiance, the bread is to die for, service was perfect. I had a pork with what they called "salsa Verde" but was unlike anything I'd ever tasted, so delicious! My son had salmon which he loved and their fresh baked bread is like eating a little slice of heaven- and the butter! Omg you can kill me now I'm so happy. We each had a super yummy cocktail of some sort that was citrussy, spicy & maybe a hint of coconut? All I can say is if you're in the neighborhood, check it out, I think you'll have a very satisfying experience! (& their desserts are great too!) read more

The place is nice inside with light,windows and open feeling. The bread is so good. Vegetarian pea soup and vegetarian asparagus dishes were good BUT not hot..had to send back soup. My friends had an eggy pasta dish and sturgeon also not hot so very unappetizing. The chocolate avocado dessert was interesting but salty. At these prices they should figure how to serve hot food.. as well as offering more vegetarian options. read more

I usually visit this part of SF because it looks a little sketchy and run down. But I was very pleasantly surprised by Outerlands. I first visited this restaurant at night and, then, more recently for brunch. The food here is outstanding! I love their pasteries and their breakfast hashes and waffles! The setting has an earthy, rustic setting which has a calming effect on me as I devour all my food! The servers are friendly and attentive, the space is clean and the dishes and glassware looked clean. I have to emphasize that the food here is really good! Great and interesting ingredients, great flavors and textures and nicely presented! I would highly recommend this place near the end of Judah Street to anyone who wants a solid eating and dining experience! read more

As residents of the Outer Sunset, my Wife and I truly love and value our community. We care about our neighbors and both enjoy and take pride in supporting local businesses. For this reason, it is very hard for me to write this negative review, but after the experience that my family had at Outerlands today I feel compelled to do so. I have eaten at Outerlands several times now. The food and drinks have been consistently excellent and although the price point is a bit high, the quality of the food would bring me back. If not for the consistently terrible service. To quote my wife: "Walking into this restaurant you feel as though your patronage is expendable and you are not valued as a human being." Today my wife, her parents, and our fifteen month-old daughter went to Outerlands for an early dinner and celebration of my wife's birthday. They arrived at 4:45 and waited until the restaurant opened at 5 PM. They were the first group in line without a reservation and while Outerland's website clearly states that "We set aside half of our dining room for walk-ins," they were not offered a table inside. Instead, Tiffany, the hostess, offered three adults and a FIFTEEN MONTH OLD BABY a choice between sitting at a four-foot wide section of bar, or sitting outside. In NOVEMBER. At least one group that got there after my family was offered a table inside while my FIFTEEN MONTH OLD daughter was made to sit outside after my wife had clearly stated that she would prefer to sit inside. I understand that it might be bad business to have kids in your restaurant, David, but is that the kind of establishment that you want to run? Is that how you see your customers and community? I hope not. But I promise you that I will never spend another dollar at Outerlands until this changes, and I will urge my friends and community to do the same. read more

I live a couple blocks away from Outerlands and I'm really thankful they're there. The food is really good, even if the menu is limited. My girlfriend and I usually each get a soup and split a salad. We don't leave overly stuffed, but we do leave satisfied. They have good beers and good vibes. read more

FAB-O. I went with 4 friend and we shared several dishes, all of which were very good to super awesome. Everything was seasoned perfectly and made of mostly local & organic -Endive salad w/ chopped egg was very tasty, and I'm not a big fan of endive. -Roasted beet salad was perfectly executed w/ beet-y goodness. -Heirloom tomato salad highlighted the season's bestest tomatoes ever. -Corn chowder- big ol' bowl of very satisfying, yet light soup. -Mac n cheese - this was very good, tho not as good as everything else, IMHO - I personally like mac n cheese w/ a crusty, cheesy baked top, but that's just me -Pork w/ canelinni beans - OH MY LORD - this is an updated, lighter version of pork n beans - pure buttery porkiness at it's finest. I could eat a ton of this. The only downside is they ran out of dessert (we finished dinner close to 9pm) - and they had peach pie on the menu, which I really, really, really wanted to try. This place is a find that makes me willing to drive all the way over from Hayes Valley. It caught my eye one night on my way to dinner at Thanh Long and since then I've been back 3 times. Each was well worth it. The preparation is as good as it is simple-- braised greens with potatoes and garlic was one favorite. This kind of food leaves no place to hide, it's either good or it's not. And thus far it's all been a great value for the money and the perfect casual quiet night out. I don't know who those people are who are dining outside in the Sunset but I think it would be cool if the outdoor seating came with blankets. Brrr... it's cold out there. read more

Unique in every way. It's a perfect place to go on a rare sunny day in the Sunset to relax and enjoy a tasty meal. You can' t beat friendly service with intriguing menus choices. Yes, the food is fresh, but the cooking is not that great. We had some bread pudding that was too salty. Grit with shrimp looked interesting, but tasted like baby food. I was disappointed, after making my out of town visitors wait for a table for almost an hour (when the waitress had said 20 minutes - just be honest with us next time). We had some friends go there recently too, and were not that impressed with the small portions and so-so cooking. Reasonably good service and good bread. Nice interior and vibe. But I am someone who places priority on the taste of my food, rather than how hipster a place is. Sorry - I really wanted to like this place since I live in the neighborhood, but I doubt I will go back considering the price for mediocre food. If I wanted local seasonal fresh dinner, I'd rather go shop for fresh organic food from the Other Avenue and whip up something at home. read more

I hear these guys learned to bake bread at Tartine. It shows. The bread is amazing and there is lots of it. I saw a grilled cheese come out that was at least three inches thick. The open faced egg sandwich with bacon was a winner, as was the one with tomato and roasted eggplant. The salted caramel has to be one of the best ways to spend a dollar in SF. The nice people in the kitchen sent out bowls of fennel bouillon on the house (the chef I was with knew them) and, not to look a gift horse in the mouth, it was really bland. Outerlands is not what it seems. Yes it is far out; but it is anything but a hole in the wall serving rustic or poorly plated food. Rather, it has a group of lovely and enthusiastic servers, a talented chef, and a sophisticated menu that is very fairly priced. The only drawback to the place is that being so small they do not take reservations. If you miss the first seating you are apt to have a substantial wait on your hands. A wait in what seems the middle of nowhere. So I got there before five to ensure seating when they opened at five thirty. I started with a salad of little gems, egg, fried bread and a mustard dressing. Everything here was very good although I thought the salad somewhat overdressed as the dressing was quite assertive. But the dressing was so good that it could have doubled as a dipping sauce. A bowl of early girl tomato soup with marinated bok choy was lovely. The soup was vibrant and nicely cut by the bok choy. Good stuff. A main of pulled lamb shank with wheatberry, dates and celery root was sophistication personified. The lamb was assertive but not aggressively so. The wheatberry and dates were a perfect complement to the meat. At first I thought the celery root was creme fraiche it was so sweet. A great plate of food. The wine pour was generous and the tab modest. A great restaurant in a great restaurant town. read more

Outerlands never disappoints. I've never waited less than an hour, but I've never had a mediocre plate either. It's fairly expensive for small portions at dinner, but worth it. Everything is so fresh and the flavor combinations are always new and delightful. Great for both vegetarians and carnivores. This is one of my favorite spots in SF. I particularly love it for a nice brunch/lunch. If you are thinking about coming here on the weekends, make sure you have a good 2 to 3 hours to kill, the wait is long, but well worth it. My suggestion is to write your name down on the list, ask the hostess how long the wait is and if you are looking at more than an hour wait, go down the street to The Pittsburgh (a dive bar two blocks down) and grab a Bloody Mary! Make sure you check in from time to time as the hostess will call out names to make sure you are nearby (if you aren't your name gets crossed off). The food never ceases to amaze me. They change their menu daily and all of their food is from local purveyors. What to order off the brunch/lunch menu: - Open Faced Sandwiches (the combinations change from time to time, but you can't go wrong with this for brunch) - The Grilled Cheese (their bread is to die for and this is a must try, especially if you are with a group because you can all split it for the table) I love everything about this place. The food, the service and the vibe. If you are an impatient person, do not come here, as it is a first come, first serve small restaurant. If you don't mind a wait (and aren't with a group of more than 4 people), this is a must try for foodies in the Bay Area! read more

This is a great restaurant. I love it, because for one, the food is outstanding, and also because the energy of the workers seemed so relaxed. This isn't your typical high energy, stressful fancy restaurant atmosphere- everyone was in a good mood, and seemed like they enjoyed being there. And they weren't slow- the food came out efficiently. The Oysters were hands down the best oysters I've ever had. There was a bread appetizer that was really good. The Halibut was juicy, and full of flavor. However, I don't recommend the Pork Chops. They were way too expensive, and I wasn't impressed with them. This is an Outer Sunset Classic, with a great Wine Menu and an awesome spot to hit after a nice day at the beach. read more

There's no breakfast like an Outerlands breakfast. Seriously, this place is no joke. The food is fresh, and the inside decor strikes the right balance between modern and rustic decor making for a relaxed foodie go-to breakfast spot. The ginger apple cider (delicious when hot!) starts the meal off right. I ordered the broccoli cheese quiche with greens and let me tell you the crust was perfection. Flaky and oh so buttery. Our table split an order of the Dutch pancake with ricotta and roasted apples which was just the right amount of decadent sweetness to go around. The portions and prices are all solid, too. Everything is within the $8-15 range. And as other reviewers have noted, you'll want to get here early. We had our names on the list at 8:30, a half hour before they opened. We live nearby, and have never waited the 2 hours it takes to go here for brunch. Few places are ever worth that wait if you're hungry! BUT dinner here is superb. Drinks are inventive, subtle and on point. The dishes in general are flavorful and well balanced. Service is attentive but not overbearing. But the bread. The bread! AHhhh it will blow your mind. You can get it with ricotta which is fabulous but there is not much that beats that bread with a slather of butter. And you can take loaves home as well! My husband and I attempted to go here as the menu items looked very good, but we didn't even have a chance to try them out. When we arrived, there were folks outside waiting to be seated. I stood in front of the hostess podium and waited over 10 minutes for someone to even address me. I understand they were busy, but there were times that someone was directly on the other side of the tiny stand and did not even look at me. I finally asked one of the two hostesses (I had to initiate contact) what the wait time was for two people. She said about twenty minutes and walked off. Uh, ok, so now what do I do, you didn't take my name. Finally someone else asked me if I had signed my name on the board. There was a clipboard on the wall behind the stand that apparently you had to sign in. I told the second hostess that the first one never told me this. And she said, "Oh, yeah, you have to sign in, but we close in 25 minute anyway." (It was lunchtime). And then she left to do her own thing. Didn't ask me if I'd like to sign in, no nothing. The place was full, I get it, and the hostesses clearly had no interest in customer service, only to make sure they didn't have to help anyone else. They closed at 3pm for seating. There were still tons of people in there and no way they would get everyone out by 3pm. I understand if we got there 5 minutes before 3pm, but we didn't. If I were the owners, I'd be irritated that the hostesses were so dismissive that it took business away from the restaurant. Rude and I never plan on even attempting to go back. It worked out great, because we wound up having fantastic pizza in Little Italy! read more

Really digging this place! A lighter healthier version of breakfast with the exception of this amazing homemade sourdough donut with fresh cherry glaze! I tried to keep it healthy but I had to add the donut! The coffee is incredible and the environment is very hip! I expected better considering the hype surrounding this restaurant. The food was presented nicely and the space is beautiful. However the grilled cheese sandwich was noticeably burnt, and the waffle was just okay. Nowhere near being worth the hefty price tag. The coffee was the worst part, it was $3 a cup and so bad we did not take advantage of the refills. No amount of cream and sugar could even make it drinkable. It was basically truck stop coffee. Other customers also walked out with butter which I was not offered. Just FYI. For those who take the time to fight for a parking space and have in the past paid $14 for a root salad consisting of 5 carrot curls and a few tossed salad leaves....this place truly has lost its vision and now cater to the yuppies who have deep pockets and want to impress friends who cannot taste anything. I tried the place because it is right next to where I live, and apparently the restaurant is one of the top in SF. I ordered the eggs in mushroom broth, and cannot be more disappointed. The broth was almost cold, topped with a few slices of raw cabbage, quinoa thrown in, and a poorly cooked sunny side egg. Please save your money to somewhere else. read more

This just might be the most overrated brunch in the city. Of course I came here with high expectations, and planned to wait for hour(s), but when the food finally came, I was disappointed. Not because the food was bad, but because it wasn't out of this world amazing like a place with this much hype and a 2 hour weekend wait should have. While we waited we walked to Devil's Teeth, waited in line, and ate a special breakfast sandwich which was amazing and the best part of our brunch that day. When we arrived, we were told a 2 hour wait, but could be less, so be here when your name is called. It's an interesting tactic because if everyone who showed up really did wait, it would probably take 2 hours, but they clearly know that less than half of the people who put their names down will end up eating there. They could provide a shorter estimate to get more people to go, but they don't. Understandable, but our wait ended up being about 45 min-1 hr so... Anyway, we got the veggie sandwich and marinated beets. Beets were really great. Veggie sandwich was a little strange and tasted like something I would make at home. The toast is dry, the sweet potato "bacon" is literally just sweet potatoes (nothing bacon-y about them). But the sunny side up eggs and all the other toppings make for delicious bites. We opted not to get the eggs in jail because the person sitting next to us said it was not very good. I guess if you want to try the most popular brunch spots in SF, this is on the list for sure.
