3.5 stars OTTO's pizza combinations are for people who are tired of the same ol', same ol' (although they've got those, too.) I've had quite a few slices from here, but the two that stick out most are Butternut Squash, Ricotta, & Cranberry and Spinach, White Bean, & Roasted Garlic. Definitely unique & sounds like a full (dare I say, gourmet) meal instead of a $3.50 slice from a shop with no seating. I really enjoy OTTO's thin crust (yay, "less" carbs!) but it can sometimes be dry. For the most part, the slices are fresh, as heavy foot traffic keeps their rotation high, but once in a while I'll get a slice that has obviously been sitting on the rack. A good option when staples such as pepperoni or sausage & mushroom elsewhere start to bore you. read more

I headed over to Otto's for a quick bite before a show with a couple of possibilities in my mind for my first Otto experience: the Mashed Potato, Bacon and Scallion; the Butternut Squash, Ricotta and Cranberry; the Eggplant, Ricotta and Basil. The cashier asked the line of customers what we wanted, and promptly slid them onto a single large pie plate for a run through the heat before accepting our payments. When it was my turn, I asked if they had either the potato or the butternut squash and she directed my attention to the enticing pie of white with red speckles that was the former. Okay! When I got it to go, it was sandwiched between two paper plates and bundled up in a flat paperbag. The slice was thin crust, and crisp, but still with a chew, not like those stiff cracker like flatbreads I've have in other places. The sole bit of grease soaking the paper bag was from the cheesey tip of the slice that had peeked out from between the two plates. Good texture, good flavor; I liked it. For $3.50 (AFTER tax) for 1/6 of a pie, a satisfying meal. There are a couple of seats at the window counter inside, and a pair of tiny tables set outside - yes, this is mainly a take-out spot. *** 9/2012 *** So they didn't have the Butternut Squash, Ricotta and Cranberry as an option out front, BUT it turns out they had it in the back, so I ordered one slice to go for $3.50. My slice was dolloped with seasoned ricotta and peppered butternut squash, with dried cranberries scattered about. Other than wishing that they made it easier to have a single bite that included both white and yellow creaminess, I enjoyed my crisp-chewy slice. I did some pizza hopping Friday night and tried both Ottos and Pinnocchios. Both very yummy pizza joints with very different styles. If you are looking for more of a crispy crust and a fatty slice, go to Pinnocchios. If you are looking for a very thin crust with more exotic flavors, go to Ottos. I tried the Tomato Basil and Mango with Pulled Pork. Since the crust is so thin, the crust is crispy and flavors are very bold. There is just the right amount of crunch, flavor and grease in every bite. In my opinion, I enjoyed Pinnocchios more, but Ottos was also very tasty. read more

OTTO Pizza is a great to-go lunch option. They don't have any seating, so don't expect to sit and lounge. There are some chairs outside but they're not always available. They typically do a "by the slice" - pricing $3.75 per slice. They have a lot of interesting flavors! Don't be shy to try something new. My favorite is the mashed potato, bacon, and scallion pizza. I am also a big fan of the pepperoni and the margherita. The pizza isn't great cold, but pizza rarely is. The crust is thin and well baked, and has a really yummy flavor just by itself. I frequent the Harvard Square location whenever I can - the toppings and flavors are always so unique and delicious! The service is extremely quick, since they usually have a line out the door, which is necessary for the busy hours. I come here when I am about to catch a train and they will wrap up your pizza slice to go. My favorite is the Mashed Potato Bacon Scallion pizza, and I like the squash ricotta cranberry too. It's like gourmet pizza in the middle of Harvard Square! Many days they have their own lemonade in the drink case- and if you have time they have a nice little patio area with tables to sit. OTTO's is like pizza meets bougie restaurant flavor combos to knock out some killer pies (and slices). It's right by the Harvard Square T stop so I kept passing OTTO and getting enticed by the pizza. The actual space is super tiny; there's literally no where to sit and people constantly crowd the counter to buy and eat their pizza. I had the arugula, blue cheese and pear slice to go during my pizza adventure. They somehow puff up the bag for the slice and make it real easy to transport safely, important for a pizza-holic like me. While there was very little arugula, the blue cheese and perfectly cooked pears, along with some parmesan I believe, tasted epic. The crust is super super thin, maybe a little too thin along the outside, but that's more of a personal taste trait. While a slice is large looking, it's also not super heavy and more reminiscent of flatbread than pizza dough. But at $3.50 a slice ($3 for a regular cheese slice) and super fast service, there's nothing to keep me from coming back. read more

Great slices served up quick! The pepperoni is a staple but they also mix up some interesting combos for the daily specials. Great crust. The first location in Boston (Cambridge actually) was amazing when I first had it years ago. It was the closest pizza I've had in Boston to my favorite New Haven - thin crispy coal fire pizza. Since they had a diaspora across Boston into like 6 more locations, I'm not sure if it just lost its charm but it does not seem the same or as special as I once thought. I will go to the Cambridge location to get their mashed potato bacon scallion pizza (my favorite) if I'm in the area, but I won't seek it out like I used to. read more

Besides the traditional flavors, they are good at mixing up non-typical pizza ingredients, such as marshmallows, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, etc. Even though the combinations look somewhat weird, they surprisingly taste delicious. There I was, eating a slice of OTTO pizza on a bench in Harvard square, when some smiling man humorously asked if he could have some of my pizza. I'm all for jokes but I immediately barked, "ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!" and he scampered away. I'm usually a charitable person but damn that pizza's good. I popped into OTTO around 1:30pm on a Sunday, so there was no one else in line. It's a very small place so I imagine the lines would immediately go out of the door. But I lucked out, and the girl behind the counter gave me a run-down of all of the pizzas. I probably remembered 75% of what she said, but I felt safe to go with the one with the most meat on it. A couple bucks later and a quick trip to the oven and the huge slice was in my hands. My slice had a white sauce, herbs, thick bacon, onions, and mushrooms. The crust is thin, yet is very crispy and hold the toppings. There was nothing I would change about the pizza. I wasn't even that hungry to begin with and the slice was big, but I inhaled it happily. I just agree with others that they should definitely consider putting up signs for the pizzas. I can't imagine how much time is wasted when each customer has to wait for a full description of every pizza, only once at the counter. read more

Flippin flapjacks, this place was a total find! We were rushing to get to the T but needed some sustenance before a big trip. I went with the pear and chicken and split a sausage and onion and was totally blown away with the creative, but quick, options they had. Anyhow, we were all able to order and get our slices heated for us within 5 minutes--The girls were super nice when it came to explaining all the different types of pizza (I couldn't find a menu in the rush), and were happy to give recommendations. After walking by countless times, finally decided to go in and check it out myself. Liked the friendly, sturdy and somewhat butchy-ish (but not bitchy-ish in the least) women working there, and their pizzas LOOKED good and were not outrageously priced plus they're open very late. Well, the pizzas have some innovative toppings/combos worth trying out just to say you did, and similar to Regina Pizzeria the crust is super thin not soggy or breadlike (Chicago style lovers go elsewhere)...but just like Regina's, it wasn't very flavorful or filling. Toppings modest in quantity and taste. Similarly, the sauce was only so-so. Anyway, after snarfing down the super-thin crust part, you're left with these enormous thick crust-rinds that are way too dry and bland to eat...I hate wasting food, so I took ours home and had them with some cheese and wine a couple hours later. Anyway, looks like Whole Foods' pizza still reigns supreme in the Boston area. Rating = really 3 stars; 4th one is for the cool women behind the counter. read more

Delicious pizza by the slice. We are big fans of Otto in Portland, so we were excited to hear that there was a location in Harvard Square conveniently near a bus stop. I got my favorite mashed potato pizza, and my husband got a butternut squash pizza, and both were almost as good as the original. My mashed potato pizza was a little dry (I got the last piece before they switched out a fresh pie), but it was still pretty good. Prices were reasonable for the area. There is no place inside to sit down, and the selection is somewhat limited to 4-5 pies, but we are still excited to have a quick lunch option and especially one as near and dear to our heart! read more

I was craving a funky pizza, Zing style, but it seems Zing is close until further notice, so I removed the restriction that the pizza joint in question had to deliver and opted to pick up some pies from Otto. I knew I'd love them, since they have a pizza with butternut squash, ricotta, and cranberries. I love weird shit. We also tried the spicy pulled pork and herb, and an onion, apple, bacon thing. Yum! The small pizzas are $12 (large around $21), and I feared a small was a personal size, but one small pizza could comfortably feed two, maybe, with a side. That's my one gripe-- I wish a place like this, that makes "classy" pizzas, would also serve salads or healthy sides. Another up side though: they serve a good variety of options by the slice. I love pizza! I've said it before and I'll say it again. Due to my love for pizza I try it everywhere I go. I love seeing how the pizza is made from different cities and states. (NY, Chicago, and now Boston!) OTTO is set up right in Harvard Square which makes it the go to lunch spot in this area. I had this place bookmarked and was happy to try it. OTTO specializes in all types of thin crust pizza. I found it interesting that it originated from Maine so I thought I was getting the best of both worlds. A slice located in Boston but originally from Portland, Maine! The slice came out fresh and hot. $3.50 each slice didn't alarm me for the price because that's how much it is back home. I thought it was a good size for the price they charged. Thin crust is always a good thing in my opinion. This slice was well balanced with the cheese, sauce, and crust. It wasn't oily at all and simply tasted really good. Was it the best slice I've ever had? Probably not. Was I impressed by how much I enjoyed a slice while in Boston? Yes I was. OTTO is a great place for lunch or a late night snack when you are craving a slice of pizza. Wow, I cannot tell you how much I love OTTO Pizza. This is by far the best pizza place in the square. All the students love it, although we don't order as often because their pizzas can be too expensive for our poor college student budgets. I will say that it is worth every penny. Some of the best gluten free pizza delivery. The pepperoni mushroom pizza had a lot of topings. The delivery estimate was about 1.5hrs but they came in 30 to 40 min ! And they're open late at night for some 1am munchies. The mesh below the pizza keeps it from getting soggy. I'm not celiac but I'm very sensitive to crumbs etc and haven't had any issues with contamination from this location.
