I was craving pizza with my girlfriend and we were in Harvard Square; so we stopped by Otto's. This is a good option for pizza in the area if you're on the go. They unfortunately don't have any indoor seating, but there's a bit of outdoor seating out on Massachusetts Ave. Our large pizza was ready in about 15 minutes, and it came out hot and fresh. My girlfriend and I split their famous mashed potato, bacon, scallion and buffalo chicken, blue cheese, scallion pizza. The mashed potato pizza was so unique and I honestly really liked it. It was served as a white pizza, though I think it would've been even better with a pesto base. The buffalo chicken pizza was a classic, I liked the blue cheese crumbles on it and the scallions as a topping. This is a good option for takeout if you're in the Harvard area. A large pizza with 8 big slices and lots of topping came out to about $26 and can feed 2-3 people, which is pretty decent in Boston. read more

This is a small place on the inside, but do have a few tables set up on the patio out front. The menu was quite different than any pizza joint I've been to. They didn't have vegan slices available, but they could special make a small vegan pizza - which is what I did! The entire order was relatively inexpensive and the pizza was AMAZING. I feel like people really sleep on Otto's when it comes to pizza in Harvard Square. Pinnochios this, Joe's that...lets talk about Otto's! I personally think that Otto's is the best in the square, and here's why. 1. The sauce. When it comes to pizza, it is my FIRM belief that it is the sauce that makes the pizza. At Otto's, their sauce is unbeatable. It is delightfully tart and creates a wonderful tomato y kick to the other flavors in the pizza. With bad/mediocre pizza, you never really notice the sauce. It's just kind of there because thats what goes on pizza. At Otto's, the sauce presents itself to you in a very pleasing way that really makes the pizza memorable. 2. Thinness. I personally am a fan of thin pizza, and Otto's does this well. The proportion of sauce to cheese to dough is just right in my opinion. It doesn't feel like bread with a topping of cheese and sauce, it doesn't feel like sauce soup with a little bit of bread and cheese mixed in, and it doesn't feel like I'm just eating cheese. 3. Creativity of flavors. At Otto's you can get your classic Margarita or Pepperoni pizza, but if you're feeling adventurous they've got more than enough creative options for you, such as roasted yam, applewood bacon & fried sage, or caramelized pear, blue cheese, & arugula. The only slight negative to Otto's is the inside. There are no tables and one meager little bench area with enough room for four people max, but even then it is super squished and just not great ambiance. Before I say anything more I should say that I do plan to return to this place at some point in case they had a bad day when I was here. If when I return the experience is better (or worse) I will update accordingly. The pictures do seem a little more appetizing than what I had. Also, take note that while it is possible to eat at this location, it is quite tiny, the table is the kind you stand at, and three, maybe four people can fit at it. Anyways, I ordered the special, which was bacon jalapeno. The slice of pizza was fairly large, and fairly inexpensive at 3.50 (could be off by a quarter). It went into the oven, and then came straight out perfect temperature quite quickly. More good is that the heat level of the jalapenos was perfect, and the flavors were more or less on point (a question of balance though) I really liked that the dough was thin. I don't typically like a mouthful of bread when I bite into a slice of pizza. However, there were two serious misses that cost Otto those two stars. First, pizza should be a little oily/greasy. I am not saying there should be enough to put into a car, but some oil adds that moistness pizzas have. Alas, I found this pizza was on the dry side. This ties into the next miss well. There were very little toppings on the pizza. As such, while the crust was very thin, the layer of toppings was probably equally thin. Additionally the two star ingredients, jalapeno and bacon were seriously lacking. There were 5 slices of jalapeno, and even less bacon. Consistency is something I am always screaming in my reviews... I know that with pizza it is a little different, but each bite should be more or less similar to others. I would also like to note that I would have liked the tomato sauce to be more present in the slice. There was ample ricotta though. While I never met a pizza I didn't like (outside some school cafeterias) this pizza is just okay. Good flavor, but lacking toppings, and moist-ness. read more

I reserve the right to change my mind and I do so right here. I was going to go for a sausage and onion pizza slice. However, just as the man at the oven was about to take my slice, he pulls out a freshly baked spicy pulled pork pizza with scallion. I called an audible and went for that. I also asked for the pizza to be extra hot. So the benefit of having the pizza be extra hot was that the crust became super crunchy, since it was in the oven longer. The wafer-thin crust tasted like a delicious savory cracker. The cheese isn't heavy but it's noticeable. The scallion provided a little earthiness and sweetness. Lastly, the pulled pork melted in my mouth and the spice-level was just right. Otto definitely redeemed itself big time. Only minor gripe is that they need to have signs for their pizzas since I'm sure the workers at the counter get weary having to explain the rotating cavalcade of pizzas offered. read more

Otto's is a tiny little pizza joint sandwiched between Bank of America and CVS. You can usually identify it by the line that goes out the door and wraps around the front. As expected with such a tiny space there isn't a lot of room to sit or eat inside. They have a small counter with some stools but with the number of people going in and out it isn't really the most desirable place to enjoy a pizza. The staff seems to be comprised soley of dudes in varying degrees of hipser-ness, which makes sense for a pizza chain originally from Portland. They're always very nice but tend to be quite to-the-point and quick, especially when they're trying to sever as many people as possible. They have a large selection of different pizzas, ranging from regular to bizarre. The three cheese tortellini pizza seems popular for it's weirdness factor, but I personally don't think it tastes that good. They also have pies with eggplant, and another with pulled pork - all are pretty good and worth a try. Otto's also does a mean lean pepperoni very well too. The crown jewel of their pizzas (at least in my opinion) is the Mashed Potato, Bacon and Scallion. To die for. If you want to buy a whole pizza you should absolutely call in early, because it's going to be a long wait if you don't. I am a little sad sometimes by their selection - they only ever have 8 pizzas on rotation to sell by the slice, so if the type you want isn't there you're mostly out of luck. The pizzas don't really come fresh out of the oven - they're premade and on display, and when you order a slice they'll heat it up in the oven for you. Otto is definitely my favorite pizza place in the square, but it's also probably the priciest. A slice of pizza will set you back 3.50, which always struck me as strange. Their whole pizzas range from $15 to $21, but yet their by-the-slice options are all a flat price. Definitely worth a try, especially if you can catch them on an off hour when they aren't as busy! CON: Their large trash can by the door perpetually seems to be overflowing with trash. As a native BosAngelino, I have an innate ability to switch my pizza palate from traditional Boston to funky LA (a la California Pizza Kitchen). But these two styles remain mutually exclusive. As much as they try to cross over, it just doesn't work. Then one day in between classes, I discovered upstart Clubber Lang in old school Harvard: Otto Pizza. Otto, from what I understand, is originally from Maine, but as far as I'm concerned, is the first to successfully blend the two distinct styles into a hipster-traditional ("hiptra"?) offering that is so good that I don't actually eat pizza anywhere else in Boston. That's a sign of respect from a part Sicilian Bostonian from LA. Pulled pork pizza is my favorite so far, though I have to admit that I really dig the one with cranberries (I know, right?). The slices are huge but flat so it evens out to be as filling as a normal slice. There was outdoor seating available on a first come first served basis.
