I am so glad I found this restaurant. I came here on New Year's Eve, and it was very busy, but we were seated right away. The service is wonderful and attentive, and the fish is so fresh and beautifully prepared and displayed on the plate! I ordered the sushi and sashimi platter for two and shared it among three hungry girls, and we could still not finish it all! Also, the portion of Edamame was very generous! This is a tiny place, but it seems to be quite popular. Osaka is located right across from the movie theatre, which makes it a great spot for friends to have a night out! Delicious! It used to be: 1) Hasaki 2) Nobu for sushi. After 10 years of this opinion I now amend my list: 1) Osaka 2) Hasaki. Allow me to explain..Nobu is of course amazing but unless you have De Niro's cash on hand one looks for divine fresh fish elsewhere which all of the above have. Osaka has taken the 10 year title from Hasaki because it is a little less pricey, portions are bigger, and they are a little less traditional so they make the funky rolls and such that have turned me into an an american sushi diner but what can I say...God Bless America, and God bless Osaka for that respelendent Mexican roll...it's like the UN up in that piece. read more

I'm torn. Up until last summer, Osaka was my go-to sushi place. Nothing pleased me more than to enjoy their delicate gyoza, delicious sushi, and a glass of white wine while sitting in the garden on a warm summer evening. Then one night it all changed. The roll I ordered tasted off, the service was slow to the extreme, and the chicken in the yakitori was as dry as plywood. After that, the bloom was off the rose. Terrific sushi and very friendly service. I recommend! GF and I had plans to see a movie in Cobble Hill and wanted to stay close to the cineplex.....lucky for us Osaka was directly across the street. I have been there a few times with friends, and have had good experiences in the past. The restaurant is clean and quiet. The staff is helpful and very patient with you if you have questions about the menu. I usually get Rainbow rolls but decided to try something new. I had a mango and salmon roll (special), edamame, and hot saki. Absolutely terrific. Look forward to going back. read more

I went this place with my hubby last Thursday evening. I was craving for lobster tempura roll. It was a good surprised how good the roll was! It was unique that was wrapped by cucumber, instead of seaweed. Spicy miso with mussel was excellent. Seafood tartar, futomaki was very good as well. I live a couple blocks away and it's across from the movie theater so...yeah...awesome. But the secret is that this place serves reliably yummy sushi at a reasonable price. The waitresses are super nice and attentive -- you don;t wait for anything, always a smile and the food is super fresh thanks to the joint's local [popularity. Osaka looked so promising based on the yelp reviews. I should have run away once I entered the restaurant and it smelled super fishy, but then I had already told my friend to meet me here since we were going to the theater across the street. Against my better judgement, we stayed for a meal here and ordered the sushi and sashimi for 2. The fish was not fresh at all! The hamachi which should have a firm texture was kind of soft and the texture was weird like fish that was past it's prime. Some of the other pieces of sashimi tasted really cold like it was just defrosted. After a couple of bites, I was so scared I would get food poisoning and did not finish my meal. This has never happened to me before at any sushi restaurant since that is my favorite food. Please do yourself a favor and go to Ki Sushi on Smith St instead if you are in the mood for good Japanese food. Stay away from Osaka. read more

This place is beautiful for date nights, but the food is okay. The sushi is nothing special, so although it's hard to disappoint, it's also hard to impress. I have to admit with a below yelper that the staff is not always very friendly. I usually don't have a problem with them since I go there regularly and am on good terms with most of the waitstaff. One night however, I got a newbie and she gave me the toughest time after taking down my order wrong and giving me something way different than what I asked for. ("You asked for this! You told me this!") Luckily one of the waitresses I know came out quickly and fixed that sticky situation. read more

Sadly with better Ki Sushi, Mitsoushi and others you should pass. After being sat it was 10 minutes before asking for a waiter to order while they get take out orders ready. Been here twice, loved it both times. Friends always get a huge variety of rolls and rave over every bite (from what I can tell, the Green River and White River rolls in particular). I'm vegan, and they make me a nice little vegetable roll wrapped in cucumber that is tasty and doesn't make me feel left out. Garlic broccoli was also great. I love Osaka. I live blocks away from the restaurant and I never tire of the place. The fish is always fresh and of top quality and, unlike many of the newer sushi places opening up, a couple can have a nice meal with sake for well under $70. Service is always great but it's small so you often have to wait--take a chill pill, it's worth it. Try the Millenium Roll! They also do first-rate tempura and have a good selection of sake. read more

Well, let's put it this way... From 2005-2008 I ate at Osaka at least 1-3 times a week. It was a magical restaurant... Had everything on their menu (more than once). It was the reason I loved my neighborhood (Carroll Gardens). Then late 2008-2009 something went really wrong. All of my favorite servers started leaving (one by one) and I didn't know why. I believe that someone bought the place, but never really got the info. Every experience got worse and worse, until about 8 months ago, when I decided I'd never go there again. Well, tonight I went there with my wife for the first time in 8 months (because we were bored and didn't feel like cooking). We ordered all vegetarian because we were very hesitant to give them the ol sashimi college try. Seriously? How can you mess up Edamame, Japanese Vegetable soup, and avocado and cucumber rolls? How is that possible?? Nothing was fresh. What a mess. I give them a year from today before they go under, unless management fixes whatever they messed up. read more

I got a bento box with chicken teriyaki. The portion was HUGE! It came with gyoza, six pieces of California roll, miso soup, and salad in addition to the teriyaki and rice. It was all delicious, especially the miso soup which I have to say was the best I have ever had. It was fresh, light, and flavorful. My friend also got a bento box and neither of us could finish our sushi! So I took six pieces home with me. Not bad for a $9/person meal. I have to say though that the service was quite inattentive. My friend wanted a fork and eventually had to stand up and get it herself. So minus a star for that. Soon after I recommended that my fam go for dinner one night after seeing a movie across the street at the Cobble Hill Cinema. We got to sit in the awesome front window table where you have to take off your shoes. We ordered some miso soup (my dad got the spicy version which was even better than the regular, but came in a ginormous portion that we couldn't finish) and a bunch of sushi. My brother also got a duck special entree. It was all delicious and again, large portions. The special rolls were inventive and tasty. The service this time was very attentive and friendly. My only complaint is that the dinner prices are a little steep. Overall I would definitely recommend this place. Go for the lunch special and be sure to try the miso soup! read more

I've been to Osaka many times. I think the sushi is pretty fantastic. The fish is always very fresh and the rolls have only a little rice with tons of fish. I love the hot and sour miso soup too. Unfortunately, the ambiance of the restaurant makes the dining experience go downhill. It is bright, usually pretty empty and there is always weird, techno-opera music playing. I also find most of the staff quite rude and unaccommodating. As a local, I order delivery regularly from Osaka and sometimes stop by for lunch. Would not recommend it for dinner because of the ambience issues. read more

This place is fantastic. Amazing miso soup filled with tofu and lots of nori. Super yummy sushi made fast but not too fast that you worry about. The tuna with the rubbed black pepper seared to perfection with avocado is TO DIE. TO DIE. Best black pepper roll I have ever had and I love me my pepper. On one hand, it pains me to give Osaka a three-star rating. On the other hand, it doesn't. Hence, the 3 stars. The first hand (let's say the right hand since that is my dominant hand and this is my slightly more dominant feeling about Osaka): the food is great. The white river roll and classic roll are addictive and unlike any sushi rolls at any other restaurant. Their mexican roll (still misspelled on the menu for years) is also deliciously smoky and surprisingly difficult to find other places. Although it is usually superb, the last time I ate there, it tasted more like a regular spicy tuna roll. The edamame and miso soup, while common and simple japanese dishes, are that much more flavorful at Osaka. It's like they put crack in everything they make. That brings us to the other hand: the prices, which you have to be on crack in order to agree to pay. I understand charging more for the extra special rolls (the white river and classic rolls are both $13), but everything on the menu seems to cost more than it needs to. Their regular rolls range between $5 and $13, and basics like miso soup and seaweed salad are all at least a dollar or so more than at other restaurants. It adds up. Everything else about Osaka falls somewhere in between the two hands. I like the ambience, but I could see how some would argue that it is not as aesthetically pleasing as some other sushi restaurants in the area. I find it quaint and comfortable. Although the place is small, it always seems to be fairly empty when I go, and I never have to wait for a table, which is strange since I know they do good business, and whenever I am walking by and not in the mood for sushi (I can't believe I would ever not be in the mood for sushi!), it is packed. It's as though the place empties out just for me (if I really believed that, I would give them more than 3 stars). The service is usually quick and attentive when you dine in, although the last time I was there, our waitress was almost too attentive in an uncomfortable, socially-awkward kind of way. When you order delivery, however, it is extremely slow and a $20 minimum. I try not to order from here, but sometimes I really want a white river roll and, like I mentioned earlier, no other roll at any other restaurant is going to cut it. But, if you are sitting at home with no plans of moving and want standard sushi bar fare, you are better off ordering from Jpan, Hana, or one of the many other options on seamless.com. I like Osaka's white river roll and their lunch specials are hard to pass up. I usually just stick to that roll or sometimes my fiance will order their peach roll. All in all, their rolls are decent except for their signature Osaka roll, which I have to say is just not good. Plain and simple. The salmon skin was really fishy and compounded with the mix of seaweed salad and caviar, the roll tasted of old, discarded fish with a mishmash of other flavors that was simply not pleasant. I had one of the best spicy maki combos ever. And it was huge! I couldn't eat it all. My husband tried the bento box with beef negimaki and tonkatsu. He also really enjoyed the food. If you get delivery, then soup/salad comes with your entree. However, if you dine in, it's $3 extra. Never been to a sushi place where a sushi dinner doesn't come with soup or salad. It's just lame. Since their email address conveniently no longer works...i've posted my message below. Saturday night some friends and I dined at your restaurant. The food was delicious, but we made the terrible mistake of sitting on the back patio...with the crazy huge rats. It was mortifying to see these things running around in circles inches from our feet. Obviously we should have left immediately and in retrospect regret not doing so. It was incredibly disappointing to bring an out of town guest to dine in what felt like a new york city subway tunnel. It was even more disappointing that no staff member said anything to us about this even though we sat with our feet up in the air and with the obvious look of discomfort. At the very least it would have been nice if someone recognized this problem and gave us a discount on the food. I hope you all are taking care of this problem and I would advise you to close your patio until the rats are gone. I saw 6 of the foulest and most fearless vermin ever in your establishment. Gross. I can only imagine what the kitchen might look like or what the Department of Health might think of this. read more

The service here was great. So friendly and accommodating. I've been to Osaka many times for their great bento box lunch special and loved all the food and the fair price. For under $10 I am stuffed on soup, salad, tofu teriyaki with veggies and rice, 2 dumplings and a california roll. WOW! read more
