Worth every penny. Pad see ew with tofu: 9/10. A solid pad see ew, worth the price. Large portion, many fresh veggies and many cubes of tofu. Khao Mu-Daeng: 9/10. Big portion, comes with extra rice and a side soup. BBQ sauce was the perfect balance of sweet and salty, and the soup had a little kick. Would definitely order this meal again. I'm super bummed about my experience with On's Thai because previously, I heard such incredible things. We found parking with no issue, which was great. However, upon entering the restaurant it took a while for a server to seat us. Service was slow. The establishment is quite outdated and I worried about cleanliness. I decided to still give it a whirl because sometimes hole in the wall places are the best. We ordered a curry dish, crab fried rice, and chicken satay. The food was inedible and appeared (and smelled) spoiled. The curry was oily and tasteless, the crab meat was gray and reeked of a fishy smell. The chicken was rubbery and also had a foul smell. Considering they pack it with undercooked bamboo shoots and eggplant, it makes me sad. The food here is absolutely awesome! The only reason I can't give them five stars is that they leave the tails on their shrimp. There are a few things less pleasant than fishing through a curry, or a stir fry, or a salad, and trying to remove the tails of shrimp. That should obviously be done in the kitchen. After all, they don't leave the feathers on the chicken, or the fur on the beef. Please remove the tails in the kitchen so that I don't have to do it myself, and get my hands filthy and splatter sauce all over my shirt and clothes. Also, there is not adequate parking. So it makes it very difficult even to come by and pick up takeout. Overall, the food is outstanding. Probably as good as I've had anywhere. But I hope that they will reconsider how they serve their shrimp. That's kind of a dealbreaker for me because I don't want to have to get filthy every time I order something with shrimp. read more

When my friends from outside Minnesota come visit me, this is the first restaurant I take them to. The food here is out of this world, both from a taste and from a price standpoint. I don't even recall how many times I have had the crab fried rice, the stuffed chicken wings, the chicken satay, the tom ka, and the pad thai. Today I went back, and had the massaman curry, and was once again amazed in the best way. Given this place's huge menu, there's gotta be something for everybody, unless you just don't like Thai food in general. This also means I have a lot more dishes I need to try there I am willing to give all my support to a small business like such who is a true representation of Thai cuisine, and I am very delightened about the fact that it is right here in Saint Paul. I went with a friend who had been there several times and raved about it...I completely understand why. We shared appetizers (cream cheese wontons and shrimp/pork buns of sort) plus sauces for each...yum, both so good! I ordered the yellow curry special...super flavorful...perfect heat (based on my request), and hot. My friend ordered a dish with tofu and noodles...don't recall what it was called - also very good. We both had a drink (they have full bar menu with some fun, unique mixed drinks). I'd absolutely recommend and worth the drive if you don't live in St. Paul (near Snelling and University, and new soccer stadium). Do not pass go...go right to On's Thai! read more

Summary: great food, okay service, horrible parking I wanted to give On's a higher rating because of the amazing authentic Thai food with a wide variety of selections since their menu is HUGE but I've had good and bad experience with the service that I think a 3 star is the most fair overall. I've had many dishes here but the pad-see-ew and any of the rice dishes are usually my go to! I loveeee spicy food and usually get a 10/10 and I still don't think it's spicy but honestly ofcourse it depends on your spicy tolerance and preferences. From my experience the curry are generally actually spicy while the noodle dishes are not even at the highest spice level. Personally- I wouldn't recommend the pad Thai as I think it's more sour than I would like it but it's definitely traditional flavors. I would also pass on the papaya salad as it's pretty plain and pricey compared to other places (but then I prefer Lao style). The environment itself could use some cleaning as the floors are very sticky and it's pretty dark but hey I also like that homey/hole in the wall feeling. The service has been a hit or miss. Usually I get a nice server but there as also been a couple of times where the service was slow and unprofessional (minimum eye contact, unfriendly and didn't seem to care). Now for parking...gosh this is my least favorite part about On's- even during non perk hours I struggle with parking in their mini lot on the side/back, maybe you will have better luck than me! read more

I absolutely love the Thai food here. Only reason I took off a star is because the spice level fluctuates so much depending on the day you go. My absolute favorite thing to get here is the #76 (I think it's called Praram Loang Song, I just have ordered it by the number so often I don't know what the actual name is anymore!) I just get a vegetable version and used to get a mild-medium (call it 3ish stars on a scale of 10). I do like somewhat spicy stuff, but I also know On makes it spicy. Now I get a mild and it's spicier than any mild-medium I used to get. Still tastes delicious, I just eat slower so I don't cry. Get a Thai iced coffee too, you won't be disappointed. read more

On's has been a fave until today when I found a very long black hair in both of the entrees I ordered for takeout. While the restaurant offered to remake, I was not up for taking a chance on more hair in food. All I wanted was a refund, but the manager refused. He stated his staff wear hairnets & basically suggested I put the hair in the food myself. It's time to find a new fave Thai restaurant. *** I'm not a scammer. As I mentioned on the phone, I order somewhat regularly. In fact, when I came in to pick up my food your staff brought it to me without my having to provide a name for the order. Plus I have short, brown hair. The timing of my calls to complain have to do with trying to eat while at work. Work is the same reason I couldn't return to show you the hairy food and/or pick up remade food. Nor did I feel like taking a third chance on your food... I realize losing me as a customer will have no impact on your business, but you might want to ask yourself why you feel the need to have a sign posted by the door regarding your "return policy." I cant believe this restaurant has fallen so far. What used to be one of the best restaurants in St.Paul is little more the microwave food. I mean literally microwave. The pad Thai had no sauce and what was there is no pad Thai Iv ever had, the spring rolls tasted like old noodles from the trash, and bad shrimp. They microwaved the sticky rice so it was hard as a rock and had hair in it. The only good things was the mango- it was freshly cut and the Thai tea was fine. There is nothing fancy about On's. It's kind of dark and divey, which I actually don't mind because some of the best food comes from dark and divey. Case in point: On's Thai Kitchen. I grabbed a corner table for myself and friends and was greeted by one of the friendliest servers I've encountered. Once the group was gathered, we ordered spring rolls and egg rolls to start off. I'm not a seafood fan so I stuck to the crispy and delicious egg rolls. There was only one each left on the plates so we definitely demolished these appetizers. We also got some of the Thai Iced Tea which was stout and flavorful. For my main entree, I ordered the Pad-See-Ew with chicken. This has the large, fried flat noodles and a mix of veggies. I'm a wimp when it comes to spice so I asked for the lowest amount possible. This dish did not disappoint! I cannot wait to finish off the leftovers tonight. Been thinking about it all morning. Gather 'round kids, let Uncle Keith tell you a story. Years ago, a group of us stopped in for a dinner at On's. We heard so many wonderful things. That dinner turned into a mess. The food took so very long. Upon arrival it was dead. It had sat in the window so long. Our apps came even after that. The food was just bad. Drinks were wrong. Check was wrong. Not sure what happened that night, but it was definitely not On, it was very Off. Years later we summoned up the courage to try again. And it was most definitely On. The curries were spectacular. A bit oily, but delicious. Noodle dishes were spot on and deeply flavored. They have a huge staff working. Cooks busting their humps. The food was quick. The apps were damn near immediate. Spring rolls glorious with a wonderful peanut and fish sauce. I knew it was an outlier initially, but with so many fantastic Thai places in the city, it took a while to circle back. We will surely be circling back soon. Places like these need support. Small business. Attention to detail. Damn fine food. The chains will always be there, but On's is something special. read more

This menu is awesome. There is so much variety outside of the typical American Thai faire. I had a rice porridge with ground pork and eggs that was a nice surprise to find, and a dipped pork appetizer that was high quality and both were unlike anything I've had in the states. It's seems to be more of a northern Thai style and as much as I travel in the states I haven't seen some of these types of dishes much since being in Thailand. This was a fun surprise as I was intending to get Ethiopian while in St Paul but it was closed, & I had thought this would be a lot less unique than it is. I'm sure they make a fine pad Thai, curry etc but with a menu this deep, it's worth trying something you might not find elsewhere. read more

We visited on a Friday night and there was literally a line out the door! Didn't look like much from the outside, but it smells amazing on the way in. I think it's a family-run restaurant. Service was very prompt even though they were packed. Fairly extensive cocktail and wine list, which was unexpected. We ordered Lychee martinis which were decent. The stuffed crab appetizers were amazing - served crunchy and hot with a really unique and slightly sweet / clear dipping sauce that looked like water but was very flavorful. Never had anything like it. They have SO many dishes to choose from. We tried the mango chicken and bacon stir fry, which were both served with rice on the side. The bacon dish was super delicious - the bacon was thick but slightly crispy - just melted in your mouth. It was nice to be served really fresh dishes that were not huge portion sizes - just the right amount. Ons used to be my favorite thai place in the city, but it's fallen behind in the ranks. There's just too much variation in quality. The curries are great, but the noodles are only just mid. The Praram Long Soang (the peanut curry) is excellent and one of my favorite in the city. But the Pad Thai and Pad See-Ew were both pretty disappointing. And I judge thai places by the quality of their noodles. The fresh rolls are solid enough (my absolute favorite fresh spring rolls are from Quangs). The wontons are delicious. I live in the neighborhood, so I usually just order take-out rather than sit in the restaurant. But the staff is always helpful and friendly and to go orders are fulfilled easily under 10 minutes. I wouldn't recommend them for delivery if you can avoid it...I've ordered there twice and both times they had issues delivering to the right place (despite my leaving instructions in the order). All in all, it's good but not spectacular. It used to be better than it is now. read more

Hands down the best Thai restaurant I have visited in the Twin Cities. Uninspiring decor is always my go-to indicator for ethnic restaurants, because the less money they spend on the bells and whistles, the more they have to concentrate on the quality of food. It's not a fine science but it's been a good barometer so far. The tables are sticky because of the varnish and the seats are not the most comfortable but I'll be damned if that distracted me from the deliciousness I was about to experience. Ordered the Cream Cheese Wontons ($5.99) and I'm no expert, but whatever they used must be the same ingredient that they include in McDonald's fries because I could not stop devouring them. Fortunately, the plate was small. The Pad-See-Ew with Tofu ($9.99) is worth revisiting with every protein, because even for the most tofu-averse, this dish would change your mind on how you feel about these sponges of flavor. Overall, would visit 10x over and although I don't live anywhere close to St. Paul, it's worth the commute (and missing half of a soccer game). read more

On's Kitchen is one of my favorite Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities! Their food is delicious, good portions, reasonably priced and has me coming back for more all the time. 5 stars for the food: This is one of the only restaurants I've been able to find that offers Mieng Kham - a very traditional dish with raw red onions, ginger, lime, peanuts, roasted shredded coconut and dehydrated shrimp served with broccoli leaves and a to-die-for sauce. I admit, this is not for everyone, but for me? I absolutely love the flavors all wrapped up in the green leaf. It's also a very hands on dish that has a bonus social element to it. Beyond this unusual dish that is probably too expensive for an adventurous try ($12), there is a long menu of dishes that do not disappoint. Some of my favorites include: Nam Tak, Mango salad, pad see ew (actually, I've enjoyed all of the noodle dishes), the eggplant dish (there's only one, so they'll know what you're asking for if you just say "the eggplant dish"... the stuffed chicken wings. I love them all! 3 stars for atmosphere: The restaurant is a little dark and if you sit along the wall with the windows, bring a little pillow because the benches are worn down and you can feel the spings when you sit. Also, this used to be a Best Steak House so they've got a semi open kitchen concept, which means it can get smokey and you're sure to leave smelling like a delicious Thai feast. I love the smell of food, but I don't like smelling like food. Finally, 2 stars for service: All the waitstaff is nice, but the service is slow and I've had mistakes with orders more than once. This is a true hole in the wall situated on University Avenue - Midway in St. Paul near the Hamline University campus. The atmosphere is nice and the selection of Thai dishes is a bundle. I did some quick research before coming here and heard good things about the pineapple fried rice and stuffed chicken wings. I ordered those two dishes and the cousin got the pad thai. We were asked for spiciness and said 'Medium.' Boy, was that a mistake! The dishes came out and it was very delicious. However, it was too spicy that it made the dishes a turn off. The customer service was bit a weak, since we needed a refill on our water to help alleviate the flames. On's Thai Kitchen is a gem, but I will give a 3.5/5 for now until I re-visit and order the dishes on a spiciness level that I can endure. read more

Sticky table was our concern. But than our stuffed chicken wing came and sat in front of us, OH MY GOD stuffed with goodness of mass flavors. So we proceeded to wait a total of about 8 minutes after we order to literally get our whole meal, and let me tell you huge portions. The Pad Thai Chicken at number 6 Spicy just enough to cleanse my palate. But my fiancé had the spicy seafood plate which came in a very large saucer with a small side of rice that was cooked to perfection. The flavors of both plates resin within all of our sense to help finish off our day. Originally I gave this place a 5 star. I want to be as honest as possible. I do love this place... correction I loved this place. My old review I raved about how wonderful the food was but how it lacked in service. I've probably either eaten or ordered ons god I don't know maybe even 100 times. It's a lot some days last winter I went each day for take out. I've lived near here for 3 years now and continuously come back. This sadly may be my last time. I ordered take out my normal Tofu Tom Kha spice level 4 (mild to medium) and my boyfriend got Pad Thai at spice level 5 (medium). When we got home we were super excited because we haven't had On's in a couple weeks because the last couple times have also been very disappointing. Not as disappointing as today. The spice level was a 10. Every single bite I had had multiple pieces of spicy pepper all I could taste was that. I quit eating it 15 mins ago and my lips are still burning. I understand a little variation in spice levels but this is ridiculous. It's honestly my favorite dish. (I even have it in my about me as one of my dying dishes) The reason why I rated it a 1 Star is not only because of this mistake but the way they handled it. I don't ever complain because I understand. But I've been here sooooo many times I would expect a little respect as a continuous customer that tells people to come here all the time. I called and told them what I had ordered and that is was close to inedible (also I love spicy food). I didn't even eat half I think I may have had 5 bites of it. My boyfriend had 2 bites of his pad Thai and started to hiccup because of how spicy his medium spiced dish was. So anyway I called and they took 8 minutes to connect me with the manager. He then told me that he could not do anything for me. He said that I could come in and they could possibly work something out. That meaning that I would probably have to just purchase another dish. Since it was closing soon that didn't end up being an option. He even said that the cook doesn't vary his spice levels and they always stay uniform on their spice levels. Obviously not. I even told him I come all the time and order this same dish ALL the time and he still refused. The conversation ended when he said that he couldn't do anything for me and that next time I should try something new. I said that I disagreed and for some reason said thank you and hung up. I'm speechless. And ridiculously disappointed and dissatisfied. It makes me sad that I've raved for so long about this place and stood up to others that talked shit about it. But after speaking directly to the manager I'm discussed by the way they treat their customers. Especially a returning one. I almost would have rather had this be the first time so I wouldn't ever return. It makes me sad because all I wanted was a new Tofu Tom Kha with maybe no spice this time or at least some sort of way to get a reimbursement or a compensated dish next visit. If I return. After I trash this dish I guess I have to make dinner for myself since they could not "help me". Sad to leave this and give them a 1 Star. But I've stood up for them for too long. We ordered a streamed whole fish today. The menu said $30, but we were charged $40. We asked a manager about the price difference. They YELLED at us from the start and said that the price has changed for a long time. At the end, they refused to adjust the price and said that if you don't like the service here just do not come back. They continued to bad-mouth about us in the kitchen, knowing that we would understand all (Thai) they are saying. Very very RUDE! We are super disappointed since the food here is delicious (a bit too sweet) for Thai standards. Shame on the manager! (The waitress is very nice tho.) They seem to do a huge takeout business, but the dining room has been full or almost full every time I've been there.
