First time trying food here. Ordered chicken egg rolls, chicken pad Thai (ss&s), yum nuah salad and combo fried rice. Salad juices spilled out the Togo box. There was a 1/4 wedge of cabbage. Wasn't expecting that. Not the salad I was expecting. Fried rice was ok. Ordered combination, only had two pieces of shrimp and barely any beef. Lots of chicken. Pad Thai was good but I've had better. Eggrolls were alright too. Have better. Portion sizes are skimpy for the price. A little different, but that's a good thing. The chef clearly takes pride in his recipes, which are not the usual in all cases. I had the Pad See Ew and my friend had the red curry. Both were very good. and my friend had the curry. Both were very good. I like my Pad See Ew dark, with plenty of sauce and a little extra time in the wok, to allow things to caramelize. The chef actually came out to my table, to explain his take on the dish and his 10 ingredient recipe, explaining why his ingredients are more healthy (less soy sauces) and therefore couldn't be made darker. Impressed, I said, go ahead. It turned out to be different than my normal preference, but it was excellent. Spring rolls were fresh, and the accompanying sauce was good. I have now been to the Thai Garden a half dozen times and they never fail to impress. I've had several different entrees and they were all tasty and well seasoned. My friend who is vegetarian, has also enjoyed all of his dishes. I was in the mood for Pad Thai and their version was great. Very well balanced. There are only a few parking spots right next to the restaurant, but there are billions of spots behind the restaurant, so park in the large lot The interior of the restaurant is small but attractive. The service is wonderful and the owner is also the chef. I would rate the food at Thai Garden near the top of Thai restaurants I've dined in and I don't feel they are as well known as some lesser quality Thai restaurants. Give it a try! read more

Gluten free Thai food? I'm in. I've been eyeing this place for a while and finally got a chance to try it out. I decided to take it "to go" so I called in my order of gluten free chicken pad Thai. They were courteous on the phone and said the order would be ready in 5-10 mins! That's FAST! Though the area of town can be sketchy at times, they have a huge parking lot in the back of the restaurant which is a must for businesses right on University where street parking isn't available. The people who work there and I presume are owners went above and beyond with their hospitality when I showed up. Love that. The food was very delicious and fresh even after taking it to go and driving a bit out of the major TC area. I look forward to coming back and trying other gluten free delights! read more

This has been my favorite Thai place in the Twin Cities for years since moving here in 2012. I have never had a meal at this restaurant that was not satisfying and flavorful. Very consistent. I now live in Northeast but still make the trip here even if other places may be closer. The best part of the experience is the management. It's a family run restaurant and you can truly tell that they care about the quality, flavor and service. This is a great place to check out if you support local businesses. Also, they have very reasonable prices and are very punctual with the times they give for take out. They make it easy. Plus, there is free parking in the back, no worries about busy University Ave :) I've been coming here for almost a decade, I really can't recommend it enough. My husband and daughter both got the pad see ew which my husband said is his favorite yet (he's on a mission to find the best pad see ew in town). DE-LI-CIOUS! Went here to get a quick celebratory dinner with my husband and Thai Garden didn't disappoint. We were seated right away and were basically out in roughly 30 min. Everything came quickly and was delicious. we got the Thai style spring rolls (forgot to take a pic), shrimp pad Thai (sweet, sour, salty version), and medium spice chicken yellow curry. We usually get this trifecta when trying a new Thai spot. The spring rolls were decent. I liked the sauce they had. The pad Thai was very yummy and had plenty of noodles and accoutrements. The yellow curry was a standout! We wanted so badly to drink the broth because it was so good. The spice level is true to medium. The service was great! Our server was helpful and quick. My family has a tradition of getting Thai or Chinese food someplace new every Christmas Eve. Having never been to Thai Garden before, I didn't know what to expect when my mother decided we'd be grabbing dinner there. Any expectations I did or didn't have were blown out of the water with our experience there. We were the only people in the dining room, but they were backed up with takeout. The owner made sure to let us know that there would be a little wait with the food, and brought us out several appetizers in addition to the ones we ordered during the wait. The food was absolutely delicious as well-- the Thai beef jerky was such a highlight. Really unique blend of flavors, it was such a culinary adventure. Can't wait to return! read more

It's hard to find good Thai food in the Twin Cities, but Thai Garden is definitely the best! They are a family run business and the flavor profile is the most authentic I have tried here in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area. The service is a little slower so I wouldn't come here if you're in a rush, but it's because there is only one cook that cooks everything. The portions are very generous and you're able to save some for a meal the next day. Prices are also quite reasonable. I will say that they do run pretty spicy, so if you're not good with spice, stick with mild. I got medium and it was pretty spicy for me but an awesome little spot read more

Thai Garden is a ramshackle mom-and-pop spot that I wish were slightly better. It has so much promise. For one thing, it is accommodating to vegans and notes what dishes can be made vegan (most can; a few, like the khao soi, unfortunately cannot). It's also one of few places in the Twin Cities where you can get a legitimately vegan (no shrimp paste) red, yellow or green curry. On the downside, they charge an extra $2 to make dishes vegan, which is both strange and a shame. We got the Thai style egg rolls ($4) and thought they were fine, but nothing special. The pad lard na ($11 + $2 vegan upcharge) was good, though it comes served in styrofoam, which was terrible. Predictably, the heat of the dish warped the styrofoam container, making me wonder how much plastic I ingested. The pad kra pow ($11 + $2 vegan upcharge) was fine, but not all that memorable. Same for the pad cashew nut ($11 + $2 vegan upcharge). Lastly, the kanom jeen ($10 + $2 vegan upcharge) is a red curry dish with rice noodles. You can't easily find truly vegan/vegetarian Thai curries, so it was nice to see this one, though I found it really salty (maybe the chef compensated for the lack of shrimp paste with too much salt?). I'd probably come back to Thai Garden if I were in St. Paul. If you're looking for other vegan-friendly Thai spots, check out Sen Yai Sen Lek or Khun Nai, both in Minneapolis. read more

In summary- GREAT FOOD, CUTE SPACE, OK SERVICE I am ALWAYS down for Thai food- especially authentic Thai cuisine with bold favors, which Thai Garden can usually deliver. But there are also other good Thai/Southeast Asian places around the area/on University Ave as well so it's hard for me to say if this is the best or not. I enjoyed the tofu stir-fry, egg rolls and drunken noodles from here. The egg rolls are small though and basically just tasted like black pepper. The main thing I didn't care for was the rice- I believe they use refined white rice instead of jasmine rice (not authentic), otherwise the food is great and there is a mini weekday lunch menu for $7. HOWEVER the service has been a disappointment...always has been unfriendly for me. The last time I went our server wasn't too friendly and I definitely felt rushed even when we were there for less than a hour. I did notice that they were short staff, so maybe she was just stressed?? Anyways- still think they could improve there. PARKING: There is a good size parking in the back. read more

Picked up a beef panang curry on my way home earlier today, and I was unfortunately disappointed with the food once I got home. The curry itself was extremely thin and not at all creamy. When poured over rice you simply get wet, soupy rice rather than a delicious curryrice. Panang curry should have hints of coconut and peanut flavors, both of which were entirely absent here. Portion was quite large, however it's mostly veggies. I have eaten dozens of panang curries from different Thai restaurants around the country and I think this might have the most vegetables of any I've ever had - probably 85% vegetables, 10% liquid, 5% meat. Slices of zucchini, carrot, peppers, and onions dominate the dish. It was more like a vegetable soup than a curry dish. read more

I walked in to pick up my to go order, not a single Asian diner in sight. Uh oh. I already knew, I made a mistake. I have yet to find a great authentic Thai restaurant in the metro area and today was not the day either. Egg rolls were really slim and mostly cabbage, it was more like a Chinese egg roll, not a tasty, thick, crunchy Thai egg roll. I also ordered coconut soup and spicy level "hot" green curry. The coconut soup was super sad. It was watered down coconut milk with lots of fish sauce, sliced up button mushrooms, and bamboo shoots. Not visually appealing or worth a second spoonful. My rice for the green curry was yellow with brown bits, not glistening white and welcoming. The green curry was not green, I think they forgot the curry paste, it was seriously lacking curry flavor. It really just looked like the coconut soup with some chili flakes and a few more vegetables. It wasn't even spicy. I was super disappointed in this meal. The restaurant was packed...but not diverse, and my Asian peeps know if there's not a single fellow Asian in the place then it caters to a specific group and not going to be authentic. You see a healthy level of diversity in an ethnic restaurant and you'll know you're in for a good meal, this is just a fact. The servers were nice though. read more

PHO: Thai Garden has the best pho I've tried in the Twin Cities, hands down. They have the perfect broth taste and their prices and portions are super fair. This is surprising because it's a Thai place but I crave pho from here all the time now that I've discovered it. Any other pho I've had from here on out is just okay. I've tried their pad Thai and curries as well. They're not the best ever but they are priced well. Pad see ew had broken noodles which I didn't like that much, but the flavors were really delicious. I have yet to have a bad experience here (not that I'm hoping I have one). Every time I've come in, the staff has greeted me and my guests, promptly offered us a table, and collected drink orders. The atmosphere feels incredibly authentic and I've been fortunate enough for it to not be too crowded when I've gone, which makes me return multiple times. For the food, it has incredible flavour, as well as a wonderful appearance. During my most recent visit, I have ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice with Chicken, which come with an generous portion, especially given the cost. There is a strong sense of freshness and variety of flavours that makes the dish one of my absolute favourites and I would definitely recommend it. Toward the end of our meal, the chef came to our table and asked how everything was. When we offered our highly positive feedback, it was apparent the chef genuinely cared that we enjoyed the food. Ordered pad kee mao (drunken noodles) and thai kao poon, along with the thai tea and mango sticky rice. Firstly, the drunken noodles. Portion was sufficient, flavor was really good, and presentation was pretty. If anything, the only gripe was the raw bean sprouts. I don't know if the dish is supposed to come with raw ones, but the flavor was a bit strong. I feel like they should have at least soaked in water a bit. Next, the thai kao poon was something new for me. It was a curry soup like dish with noodles. The soup was good but I would have preferred a little more curry or sweetness. The thai tea was the only bad part... it was way sweet, and not the flavor I was hoping for. The color was an interesting pink as well. The mango sticky rice was very flavorful and a saving grace. I was so excited to try this place out though I was a bit disappointed. This rating is solely based off of the food. The service was great. They were all very kind. I almost didn't want to rate it because I know it's not a terribly good rating. But I'm very opinionated and thai food is my favorite. First off the atmosphere is cute and quaint. It was very slow when we were there around 3pm on a Sunday. There was only one other table seated. My classic order at any Thai food restaurant is Tom Kha with tofu, pad Thai and pad see ew or drunken noodle. Since they didn't have Tom Kha I ordered the closest to it which was there coconut soup called Tom Gang Kai. It was very mediocre. Honestly to me it tasted like they poured the watery part of the bamboo shoots into it. It was just too bland for my liking. Also I would have liked a soup spoon to eat with rather than just a large metal spoon. Also side note if you want chopsticks ask for them because they don't have them out. The pad Thai was also something I was pretty disappointed in. It did not fill my pad Thai craving. It didn't taste much like pad Thai. Also they fill the plate up with bean sprouts and veggie shavings. There's so much of that and so little actual noodle. I felt like it was pad Thai noodles mixed with coleslaw and a lot of chili paste. Good but if it's that different just don't call it pad Thai. Sorry that was harsh. I did say I was opinionated. On the other hand I ordered shrimp with it and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. Something I don't see often. Props on that! The drunken noodle was delicious though not enough noodle. Same thing as the pad Thai. You're loaded up with shaved veggies I felt skimped on my actual order. It's so good give me more noodle not veggie :) Also the tofu is great! Lastly the fried rice. We got pineapple fried rice. It was a great price $7 and some change. It was delicious! We loved it. I'd definitely order more of this. Though it didn't taste very pineapple-y it had like 7 or 8 pieces of pineapple in it. Still delicious. They do their fried rice some justice. Overall I don't feel like it filled my Thai food craving. Though I still believe this place is the bomb and I can't wait to come back and switch my 3 rating to a 5. I really want to learn the menu and see what they do best! I wish I lived closer and can come here all the time. We found this place due to the high reviews on Yelp and I am very glad we did. We decided to splurge and order three entrees, a red curry, a drunken noodle, and a pho dish, which were all delicious. I especially liked the two Thai dishes. We got medium spice for the red curry and drunken noodle. The red curry spice packed a nice little punch, while the drunken noodle still felt mild. I really appreciated the pile of fresh vegetables on top of the noodle dish and the portion size of the curry.
