No bells and whistles that's for sure. But hubs was eyeing another restaurant in the area and it didn't knock me off my feet. Neither did the other eateries. We were actually in the thick of it right in the center of Stockbridge, MA- so settled for the underdog. On Main St, Once Upon is located in an interesting but disjointed alley with a couple of other small businesses around it. I reserved for outside seating after we purchased a few things to bring home across the border, but by the time we came here at 5pm, sun was down and it had gotten chillier. Our server Adriane worked solo and accommodated us inside on one condition: we must wrap up with dinner by 6:30 before the next 6:45 reservation comes in. It gave us more than enough time to enjoy our meals without wolfing it down and when everything was all said and done, it was 6:15. Bar area was closed due to COVID and the seating area's 4 tables were actually spaced accordingly. Designed to impress? Not at all- but seems like they're going for a "French" look with yellow walls. We shared an Escargots "Pot Pie" that was very tasty. Don't see this as an actual pot pie because it's not: there are about 6 snails in a garlic-butter sauce and that's it. Honestly, the puff pastry makes this dish look bigger than what it is but it's so freaking good. My medium-well Miso-Glazed Salmon was very tasty and hubs enjoyed his Roasted Beef Tenderloin (and said it was actually better than the Ruth Chris' steak he had a week prior). A terrific little farm-to-table restaurant, it's located in an alley right next door to the Red Lion Inn. There's outside and inside dining -- we must prefer the pleasures of being outside in nice weather (which we had on our recent visit). The menu is very limited, and diners are warned about that up front. Only a certain few dishes are prepared each evening, and while choices may be limited, tastes are not. We loved everything from the tangy gazpacho to the perfectly prepared flat iron steak to the sumptuous Mac and cheese and the house-made roasted hummus. Yummy. We wanted to try the peach salad aunt weeds dressing???) but didn't have room for it. The servers are delightfully friendly, and we got a nice chat with one of the chefs. Entree prices are in the range of $25-37. Reservations are really important especially if you want to dine outside. The interior looked nice, but we didn't venture there. read more

Our first time under new ownership and we are not disappointed. We started with the rosemary potatoe dinner roll with farm butter! For entrees I had the Halibut with summer squashes, fregola, herbs, garlic scape aioli. The garlic aioli made the mild halibut pop. My wife had the lentil ragout garam masala, chili oil, pea shoots, fried farm egg. Liked the chili oil heat. Service attentive to us outside on the patio. We had a group of 7ppl on a Saturday night, and thankfully we made reservation in advance as it was full house when we arrived. We start off with Cheese & Prosciutto and Curry Pumpkin Soup. On main course 4 of us ordered Flat Iron Steak, and the others had steelhead Trout, Squash Polenta and Roast Chicken Breast. The food were flavorful and the steaks were perfectly cooked, however we all agreed that they were a bit too salty. We arrived to Stockbridge on a Wednesday and we were recommended to try this restaurant 10 minutes from our inn. I called to make reservations and they told us there was one seating available at 5:30pm. We took it and glad we did. The food was Amazing and service was great! It is small place but very quaint. We had a house salad to start and it was colorful and very fresh. I had seared chicken with a he'd of lentils and an amazing sauce. My honey had grilled salmon with veggies with Asian sauce. Both were delicious and to top it off we had chocolate mouse for dessert. We love everything and it was a great experience. read more

When I experience such a fabulous meal and ambience at a small restaurant, I can feel my hesitation to write a review. I'm fearful that I will add to the popularity in such a way that it is hard for me to go when I want to go. Let me put my selfishness aside. The food at this little gem is absolutely amazing! My sisters and I each had the flank steak with a special blue cheesy sauce (not a typical blue cheese sauce, more delicious, on it that was dropdead fabulous. It came with the broccoli rob which I had, but my sister was able to substitute asparagus We ate outside in beautiful Stockbridge and had a chance to catch up with good conversation. They did not rush us. There is good spacing between tables (we sat outside). When the mosquitoes kicked in, they brought a citronella candle over. The owner emanates positivity and love for the quality of the food and experience. This restaurant earns my highest rating. DO NOT GO IF YOU ARE IN A RUSH. it ain't that kind of place. Once Upon A Table is intimate and feels homey. Reminds me of small cafes dotted throughout Vermont and New Hampshire. I suppose we could call it a New England cafe. They have an interesting menu here. Dinner appears to be an extraordinary bargain (I'm looking at you Australian rack of land for under $30), but I was there for lunch. They make a delicious carrot soup that I want to say is a coconut curry based. I wish I had room for the "pot pie" escargot but opted for a sumptuous grilled chicken sandwich. It seems simple but all the elements of caramelized onions, Gorgonzola cheese and herbed ciabatta bread melded so perfectly that the sun was greater than the parts. Tucked away down an alley, this tiny (make a reservation) restaurant serves locally sourced food that is perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. We split the cantaloupe salad (original, divine, and don't be afraid of the heat) and then one had the polenta and the other the mussels. The polenta came in a bowl topped with an egg and the mussels came in a light cream sauce beautifully seasoned and accompanied by a big slab of homemade bread perfectly toasted. Y'all...this place was INSANE! The food is so fresh, the ingredients are from what seems like regional farms, and simply delicious! I am not exaggerating when I say, this place might be one of the best eats I've had, perhaps ever. When I was eating, I straight up had an existential crisis. The waitress at one point asked if she can take something away when it was close to being done, and I straight up said the words, "No you may not." because I was determined to finish everything. It was so good. I forget the first thing I got, but one of them was the mussel dish and another was a dish with a lot of beets. They were all very solid. It's a very small and unassuming place, but something under that roof is cranking out happiness. Try this place, I don't think you will regret it. read more

I was by myself, so the very capable and efficient Head of House said there was room for and set me up with a single table even though the reservation list was full. The two wait staff were friendly and helpful. Now we get to the food. The Cod had orange zest and other accoutrements and was prepared perfectly. The potatoes had a wonderful spice. The summer squash, broccoli, and other vegetables were el dente to the perfect balance of still crunchy but cooked just enough. It was a perfect balance of slightly sweet on the cod, slightly salty on the potatoes, and the vegetables balanced them out. I give this restaurant a 5 out of 5 because of the excellent staff, the excellent cooks, and the excellent food. Well, that was disappointing.... Menu on Yelp is not the limited choice one at the restaurant. I realize the smaller menu is probably a result of Covid. Service was good. Appetizers were yummy. Short ribs were not. They had too much fat, meat was too tough. I suspect that the problem was the ribs were not slow cooked long enough. When I cook them at home, the meat is tender and not in need of a steak knife. The fat gets cooked off with a slow cook. Management did take off one of the short rib off of our bill. With a smaller menu, it's important to make the entrees offered, excellent. Last night it was not. read more

This dinner was the most delicious, fabulous dinner I have had in a very long time. The service was incredible and the dining area was quaint and perfect for an anniversary dinner! We started off with a bottle of red, fresh rosemary bread, the kale Caesar salad and mussels and it was to die for. The broth that the mussels were in was absolutely drinkable. I am a sucker for ANY Caesar salad, but this one was unforgettable. The bread was hot and so flavorful. For our entrees we got the flat iron steak (cooked to perfection) and the Chicken, also just as delicious. The garlic mashed potatoes were out of this world. We also got a side of their hash which was sweet potatoes, brussel sprouts and kale. All so very, very good. We ended with the French pressed coffee and panna cotta. We will absolutely be back next year for our annual trip! What a night to remember. read more

The most awful experience ever！He's a racism. We went to the restaurant this morning right before they opened. My husband went in and ask them if will need a table for 7. （because we were told by them that they don't take reservation）The owner just rudely told my husband they hadn't opene-come back later. we waited for the restaurant to open and went back. he just told us "we don't have a table for 7！" My question was why didn't you tell my us at the first place. He made us come back and tell us no table for us？ He didn't even write down name or try to make reservation for us at the first place. He treat people unfairly and disrespectfully. Not to mention this was NOT the first time. last couple times when we tried to get a table for my husband，my daughter and I，the owner just brushed us off by simply saying "we don't have a table！" AND he literally told us they don't take reservation while today I found out they do take reservations，because he was on the phone taking reservations while we were there today. Our family loves Tanglewood. we come to this area a lot all year round. it's like our second home in Berkshire.We bring our friends here all the time. we love and recommend a lot of good restaurants here but NEVER THIS ONE！ read more

This cute place is tucked in the alleyway behind The Red Lyon Inn. This was our first time actually eating here although we have seen it a few times and it was always very busy. During this Covid time on a damp cool spring day people were eating outside and we found they also had a small annex across the courtyard with a few tables in a handicapped accessible restroom where is in the main restaurant you have to go upstairs to access the restroom. The hostess was very welcoming and our server was very attentive relaxed and accommodating. They had no problem splitting items and provided extra spoons and side plates. Unfortunately I didn't take enough pictures. For starters we shared a tomato basil bisque. My other half declared it as pizza sauce soup but it was hot and comforting especially on a damp cool day. We asked for a side of Parmesan which was accommodated quickly and gracefully which improved the soup. We would've liked it to be a bit more bisque like-emulsified more with Basil forward but the flavors were fresh. We next share the escargot puff pastry which has a beautiful presentation as you'll see in the picture. It was piping hot when I came out beautifully presented the only downside was we would've liked to have a little more broth with the snails and we found that the extra Parmesan that we had from our soup made a lovely addition to the flavor. We did have some lovely Prosecco at $7/glass which is the going rate. We decided to split the Reuben sandwich and substituted the bread for sourdough rather than rye as we saw it was on the menu-again without a flinch from our server. The sandwich was grilled hot and well-balanced served with a side of house potato salad which was perfect-the small red potatoes and dill were well-balanced and servedServed at room temperature so all the flavor came through. I am a huge salt seasoner but none of the dishes needed any additional seasoning here. We ended our meal with a homemade gelato which was very reasonable two scoops for $4 we got a scoop of chocolate salted caramel &vanilla. We will definitely be back this is a win-win for atmosphere,great service,timing of the meal and quality food don't miss this hidden gem. read more

I don't have unreasonable tastes and expectations but the food my family ordered, both in presentation and palatability, was very "home cooked style" average presumably by cook who never had formal culinary training. While that may be okay for prices in the $10 range, it is not acceptable for a restaurant that charges 25-$30 a dish. To sum it up, the food is like a meal you would begrudgingly eat at a friend's house who just invited you over after a night of clubbing. At least it's free! Another important and relevant note: I was seated next to the kitchen and saw everything the chef was cooking. He does NOT follow Covid protocol. We were visiting friends in the Berkshires for the weekend and had tickets to see a show at the Berkshire Theatre Company so we were interested in having dinner in downtown Stockbridge. Our friends recommended that we make reservations at Once Upon A Table and that turned out to be a brilliant idea. While the restaurant's dining area is very small, with tables in close proximity to each other, their friendly staff, exceptional service and delicious courses made our evening both memorable and a culinary feast. I have to recommend that you should order their Australian Baby Lamb Chops, served with fresh zucchini, broccoli and mashed potatoes! Wow! That was an amazing dinner! If you're in a rush, you're in the wrong place. I don't mean just this restaurant, I mean the entire Berkshires region. Everything is leisurely, here. Once Upon A Table is a laid-back spot with simple, tasty food. It's one of the best spots in the town, so at prime lunch or dinnertime there will probably be a wait. Read the signs they have posted. Write your name down on the list. Don't try and jump the line, seat yourself, or generally be obnoxious. They've got salads, sandwiches, quiches, soups...just about everything tastes delicious. Order whatever sounds good, enjoy it and the slow pace of life here, and then go back to the city where everything moves too quickly and you want to strangle people for little to no reason. read more

Stopped here on my four hour drive from Providence,RI, to Utica,NY. Exactly halfway. Thanks to my fellow-Yelpers, I enjoyed a lovely dinner at this place. Reviews were spot on.... small quaint delicious food. Started with the pulled pork on polenta - yes! Stopped here for the lamb and I was not disappointed! Cooked perfectly (medium-well)! Two minor disappointments: no outdoor seating (it was a lovely evening) and the beer selection is not that great (plus my beers were not that cold and no chilled glasses). I was hoping they had BBC beer here (Being so close)- but I came here for the lamb! Service was excellent - thank u Daniel! Finished w smooth cup of coffee and the must profiteroles!
