Pleasant setting, good food, and reasonable service make On Rice a pleasant spot for a meal. On this Friday night they had live piano. Not particularly Thai, but very pleasant nonetheless. Since I was eating alone I decided on an appetizer and soup. I tried the miang kum appetizer. It was a bowl of spinach leaves and a variety of toppings to make mini wraps. Toasted coconut, lime, peanuts, Thai chilies, onion (actually the hottest item), ginger, and a sweet sauce. Flavorful! The soup I tried was tom kah; a broth with coconut milk, mushrooms and chicken. Slightly spicy at the "two peppers" level and redolent of fish sauce. Perfect on a cool rainy evening. All accompanied by slightly astringent Singha beer to clear the pallet. We went here two days in a row for lunch because we loved the pad thai. The chicken curry was okay, I've had better elsewhere. We liked the complimentary soups that were offered. Great prices for the portions, however same menu to all other thai places i've been too, no different dishes offered, but somewhat different flavors. For starters my friend and I had fresh spring rolls, which came with great dipping sauces for sides. Their peanut sauce was nothing like i've had before though, very different from other thai places. I had the Emperors Cashew stir fry with chicken which came out fantastic, great flavor and sauce it was sauted in. My friend had the classic drunken noodles, and the chili sauce was hot enough to make anyones nose run, or at least the spice level in the dish was! Great staff, prompt service, worst drunken noodle I've had. The noodles were so over cooked that they merged into a few gelatinous clumps of tasteless starch. The reviews on the wall outside were from a decade ago and have different people on them. It seems like standards have slipped. read more

I went to On Rice on Wednesday Dec 12, 2018. The food and drinks were very good. The service was not good at all. The two waitresses on duty didn't have a clue about what they were doing. The waitress who greeted us to "find a table". It was lunchtime, the room was crowded, and I've never been there. It's her place, most waitresses would take us to a table. Then they brought us dirty cups for our tea. When they brought replacements, one of the cups was also dirty. I gave up, because I could see that these two waitresses were clearly out of their depth. There were other bungled tasks and misunderstandings....also, when they brough the check (I used my debit card) she failed to provide a pen for my signature, and to add a tip. Sheesh. The staff was incompetent, and they didn't know they were incompetent. The management would do well to fire these two ladies and get wait staff who know the basics. read more

We ordered takeout from their online menu and later discovered that their actual menu is different. I ordered a Pad Thai but instead, got this really oily disgusting dish that tasted like it was slapped together from the bottom of their grease pan. The chicken was tasteless, the broccoli was old and completely soaked in oil, and my wait time of "15 minutes" turned into 35 minutes. Well tonight was the straw that broke the camels back. We have tried over and over to give this place a chance but they continue to disappoint. On Rice isn't exactly an adventure into the most authentic Thai dining experience, but it is one of the most consistently delicious and high-quality Thai restaurants in Bellingham. Basically, there is something on the menu for everyone, and it is a great place to bring a friend who hasn't tried Thai before. Each main course comes with an option of brown or white rice (the brown rice can be on the dry side at times), and is preceded by a simple green salad drizzled with warm, creamy peanut sauce (not spicy). Some personal favorite dishes of mine include Phad See-Ew, Drunken Noodle, and the Mussaman Curry. If you don't like spice, then specify that you want ZERO stars. The drinks and the appetizers are very good, and the wait is never too bad. I selected the Fairhaven location, because unlike the other two restaurants it has a more cosmopolitan feel to it and the atmosphere is a little more chic. I have been a regular patron at On Rice for a number of years. Their Pad Thai and Peanut Sauce are the best in Bellingham(others seem to be too "tomato or Fishy")in my opinion. That being said here is my gripe~ unfortunately I can no longer eat gluten due to the onset of Celiac Disease(usually not a problem at most Thai restaurants). They have a gluten free menu but the problem is that at least one if not more items on the menu contain soy sauce(Wheat Gluten!) -the chicken skewers in particular have a thai soy marinade and even though they say that the Swimming Rama is Gluten free-they add soy unless you tell them not to?! Unfortunately I have gotten sick there too many times~I prefer my intestines to remain undamaged~ and last week was the final straw for me, so I will not be returning-but for all of you "non-celiacs" Great Thai food!!!!! read more

My review applies to all the On Rice locations as I've been to all and have taken out from each location as well. There is no better friend rice anywhere than the On Rice fried rice with fried tofu. The food is always consistent from Harris to Samish Way to Barkley. The ambiance/decor at Barkley is my favorite and sometimes Harris has live piano music. I had THE worst restaurant experience at the OnRice in Fairhaven Tuesday December 13. I went with a group of Japanese exchange students and was so excited to take them to Thai food for the first time. I had been to the location several times, and had some precautions because the workers had been a little stingy and wouldn't take student coupons. I put my doubts aside and went anyway thinking it would be just fine. From the moment we sat down until we finished paying, we got nothing but impatience, disrespect, and cheapskates. The waitress came and took our orders and it was very obvious these students were having difficulties pronouncing items on their menu. The lady wasn't much help and only talked fast, rolled her eyes when they couldn't say it right, and was down right RUDE. She even asked if they wanted "brown or white rice" and repeated it quickly when they didn't understand and hardly made an effort to help them. After our food came out the vegetarian Pad Thai dish I ordered had a huge piece of plastic saran wrap that had been cooked into my meal. I was appalled and asked them to remake it very nicely. A different lady took it back to the kitchen (which was two feet away, most likely because the mean lady serving us wanted to make it easiest for her and seated us as close to the kitchen as possible). I got no update from anyone letting me know they were remaking it, how long it would be, or even an apology for getting plastic in my food in the first place. She finally brought it out with no apology (at least no sincere one) and the rest of us finished our dinner. Only a few students actually enjoyed their food. I don't know if it was a choice issue or partly the food wasn't made properly. I mean, if they got plastic in my food, who knows what else could have been in the other dishes? When it came to pay the bill, the lady came by with one check (didn't even have the decency of asking if we wanted separate checks) to which I stopped her and asked for separate checks. She turned and walked away as if to be so bothered by making separate checks and having her do more work. Finally, she brought everyone their checks. When I got mine I was expecting to have some sort of discount. Any other restaurant with good service would have given me a free meal for their mistake, but I knew with this awful service that wouldn't be the case. However, I was expecting maybe at least 30-50% off. When I saw the lady charged me full price I called her over again and asked very professionally for a discount. She replied along the lines of, "I remade it for you, so it is not necessary." To which I started to get pretty angry that she was so resistant and said, "Having plastic in my food actually shouldn't have happened and I had to wait extra time for my food, so i feel like I deserve some sort of discount," She was so reluctant and ended up giving me a WHOPPING ONE DOLLAR off my $15 meal. I took it and all the students and I agreed we would give NO TIP! To what I thought was the most awful experience, only gets worse. I called the restaurant to complain to them-turns out our horrible waitress was the manager. The owner wasn't around, nor would they let me speak to him if he were, but she was just as bad on the phone as she was in person. I explained my feelings very nicely, at first. She only yelled at me, gave some bullshit about "Seeing them, actually makes me miss my Japanese friends", "I remade your order and gave you a discount, so I thought you'd be happy", etc. etc. Oh, and she made a crack about the tip situation: "I don't even care you guys left me no tip, I still like you." I won't get into any further, but unfortunately, I will not longer bring my business there. The Samish location has much better staff so I would recommend that place any day over eating at this one, however, I don't think I can support this business if they wouldn't even let me talk to the owner and got a "supervisor" person to substitute for the owner when they called back later because he was too coward to talk to me. I feel very satisfied with this review and hope you take my advice and no longer give your business to the OnRice in Fairhaven. read more

I brought friends to this restaurants to show them one of my favorite places to eat. Our meal started off lovely with our salads and Curry. About half way through our meal my friend complained about the texture of her chicken. With close examination the chicken was uncooked. The server looked personally disgusted and told her manager who discounted the meal by $2. After further complaint they dropped it to half off. Great Thai restaurant for a date, dinner with friends or take out! I only go here for take out, but the ambiance is always really cool and relaxing. The staff is very kind and welcoming. I get cashew chicken, which comes in a generous portion with your choice of rice and spice. The only problem I have is sometimes the spice level seems to vary even though I get the same dish at the same spice number. Either way, this place has negative reviews for no reason. Consistently inconsistent with take outs. If you call in to report a crappy meal, or come back, they "add" you to their book for a "free" dish, but it doesn't exist. They go through enough staff that even if you had the name of who you spoke with, she's gone by the time you call back to claim your meal. I used to like this place, but had a bad experience quite a while ago. I was eating my Pad Thai and bit into a large piece of plastic packaging. My meal was comped, but it was still pretty gross. Vegetarians and spice lovers beware. Usually, Thai food is a haven choice for vegetarians since the country itself is heavily Buddhist and folks at least understand vegetarianism and tasty plant-based cuisine. However, most of the dishes at On Rice use fish sauce and they say they cannot make the dishes without it. For any adjustments, they will charge you. All curries are off-limits due to fish sauce as well as most noodle and stir fry dishes. You are basically looking at Pad Thai and a stir fry here. If you are after flavor, you will be disappointed. We ordered two dishes "Thai Hot" and they were both so bland that even the taste of the vegetables themselves were non existent. We ended up with two dishes that tasted like oil and that's it. My partner and I have spent time in Thailand, but we try not to judge American Thai food too harshly for falling short of its origins. I got take out but from what I could see of the restaurant it seemed to have a good ambiance, well decorated, and provided that warm feeling. I got the Chicken Pad Thai and Chicken Panang Curry which was very well portioned and compared equally with other high end Thai places I've been to in So CA.
