I have been pretty desperate in my search for a good Thai food place since I moved here last year. I felt really spoiled in PDX with all the amazing choices and I've tried three or four places here and honestly I've disliked every single one...until this one. I always get the same thing, drunken noodles. Or in this restaurant's case #32 it was absolutely delicious. It had the perfect amount of heat and a hefty amount of chicken. I suppose my only complaint is the tomato, it's so large. I had half a tomato in there and that seems excessive. I cannot recommend two dishes specifically enough: the green curry is delicious! A little spicy for my taste, but I just ask them to add some extra coconut milk and it's perfect! The chicken lettuce wraps are amazing, obviously a number one seller for a reason. I was skeptical about the lettuce wraps at first because they have mushrooms, which I can't stand, but everything is blended nicely so I don't even notice them! The rice noodles that come with the wraps are perfectly crispy to add nice texture, and the sauce alone is 5 stars! The one reason I dinged them a star is because of the price... almost $10 for edamame is ridiculous, but I'd say most everything else is pretty reasonable. I also really enjoy their Thai iced tea, because it's sweet and spicy and a great add on for the whole experience. I usually order takeout just because it's busy in there, but the service is always great and the atmosphere is pleasant! To my taste Asian 1 is one of the best Asian restaurants in Bellingham. It doesn't look that promising when you walk in-- sort of half bar and half restaurant. But the food is excellent. I like the fact that they offer some low calorie dishes, with the calories actually on the menu. We've been here quite a few times, usually ordering the Panang Curry, which is excellent. We've also tried the Mongolian Beef and the Cashew Nuts Delight with Tofu and Vegetables. They were both very good, except we thought the Mongolian Beef could have been spicier (more on that later). Another really good dish is the Swimming Rama with Tofu, which features very fresh spinach and a ton of tofu with an excellent peanut sauce. We've twice had the chicken and crab fried rice which featured very tender chicken but the last time we had it the crab tasted like it was canned. Overall, we are quite happy with this restaurant. Dragon River serves up very good and authentic Chinese food, Busara is great for Thai food, and there are a number of newer Asian places in town that are competing for the top spot. Asian 1 is definitely in the running. A word on spiciness. When we mentioned that our Mongolian Beef, ordered 4/4 on the spice-o-meter, was not all that hot, she explained what's going on. 4/4 really means 4/10, but they won't tell you that unless you specifically ask (we're supposed to be mind readers, I guess). If you order any level greater than 4, they start adding Thai peppers. Also, you can ask for a spice rack to season it yourself. This changes everything for us. They gave us a sample of the Thai peppers which we added to the leftover fried rice and had for breakfast the next day. Wow, it was a lot hotter, and much better to our taste. read more

We went for the sushi. I can't remember the names of the first two rolls we ate but the salmon roll was just so plain. The inside barley had a chip of an avocado and some cucumber slices. My friend ordered two drinks. I had a Thai Ice Tea. It comes with one refill and I always take it to go. I'm giving this review a 4 because they're usually on point and delicious. Dropped by starving on a trip up to BLane for my gobsl entry. I called in for the pad mee Kao!! This was the first time trying it and the menu said it was a crowd favorite!! Wow!! Sweet and smoky. After almost two decades of the relying on Asian 1 for the freshest, healthiest, most flavorful, and always reliable Phad Thai (in our family's case, with tofu) I opened my take-out carton to something I had never had before from Asian 1: a blob of, obviously, day old noodles that were sitting in a pool of - and this is hard to say - greasy sauce. And the tofu was at LEAST a day old. Not only did I find it difficult to separate the noodles in the blob, but I needed a serrated knife to cut the tofu, an experience I had never had before. Never mind no julienned carrots or sprouts on the top. I took five bites and then decided I needed to take the rest home to show my spouse because I knew he would never believe me. He couldn't believe it. I can only surmise that Rick Phan no longer owns Asian 1 because he would never have allowed something like that to be served at his restaurant. I've been here twice in the past two days and I was here this past Sunday. The first time I ordered the spicy beef salad. The dressing they put on this salad is some like juice and chili paste mixture that's so delicious I almost asked the waitress to give me a straw so I could drink it off my plate. I've also ordered the red curry soup, the green green curry soup, egg rolls, and the spicy tuna sushi. As you can see I've been here quite a bit in the past 3 weeks. People waiting in the entry for takeout, no masks, walking to the restroom, no masks. So on top of the snail like service and mediocre food, I'd stay away. I walked here from Costco on a late Saturday afternoon while waiting for tire service. One of the Costco employees highly recommended this restaurant. It is in a strip mall next to a Starbucks and Vietnamese Pho diner, so I wasn't sure what to expect. The interior is somewhat dingy and dark despite the large picture windows along the storefront. I managed to be seated by one of the windows near the hostess stand. Despite being visible to waitstaff, it took some time before water was delivered to my table or a drink order could be taken. I was glad I took the time to order both water and Pepsi at the beginning because waitstaff slacked on automatically refilling my two beverages even though my water glass sat empty for much of my meal. The menu has both Thai and sushi. I opted for the former and chose green curry with vegetables and a side of jasmine rice. The spice scale is 1-4 stars, so I played it safe by selecting 2. It was just right. I'm glad I didn't choose 3, especially since my drink glasses sat empty and waitstaff weren't around much to make additional requests. The food was plentiful and tasty. It was served piping hot. The vegetables were fresh and crisp. I also ordered black rice pudding for dessert. It was served warm with a dash of coconut milk. It was a delightful.
