My daughter and I went on a mini dinner date the other night and decided to try Little Tokyo. We had planned to have a full dinner, but the options were so uninspiring we decided on just a sashimi appetizer, miso soup (and I had a glass of plum wine). The salmon & tuna app we tried was fresh and delish. The wine and miso soup were good, too. And the service was friendly and fast. I don't know that this is a destination sushi restaurant for me, as their options are extremely limited in the fish department, with few if not zero creative options like you see at other places. I mean, they only have hamachi on certain days of the week (and sadly, not on the day we visited)! We have been to a lot of small Asian restaurants in shopping centers, but this one stood out and was worth the visit. Shrimp tempura, and calamari for our two appetizers to start. Followed by the ribs, a salmon, bento box and a chicken dish. All were well done, nice chewy rice, salad was a bit insipid and could use a stronger flavored dressing, but overall the meal was quite good. WORST SERVICE EVER! Tonight our family of 4 were seated at 6 pm. There was only one waitress for the entire (almost full) restaurant, so we waited patiently when she took several minutes to bring menus and other 5-10 minutes to order. 30 minutes later the waitress apologized and said our food would just be a few more minutes. By 6:45 my kids and I were famished. We did not order anything complicated! Just a couple of tuna rolls each, plain tuna surrounded by rice, and my husband had a basic udon soup. No changes or substitutions. The table of 4 behind us had come in 25 minutes AFTER us and were already served their food! Finally at 7:00 my kids and I were too hungry and restless to continue to sit there, so we asked politely why the table behind us came in so much later than us but had already gotten their food. My kids never even got their sodas in the one hour! All they got was their small miso soup 25-30 minutes after sitting down. The waitress said it was because "there was only one sushi chef." Well I've been eating at Japanese restaurants my entire life, and there is usually only one sushi chef, and it does not generally take one sushi chef and hour to make a simple tuna roll! FINALLY AT 7:00 PM I decided it was time to leave. I told the waitress we would pay for the miso soups and leave. Then she said the wait was so long because they'd been busy doing phone "to go" orders. WHAT KIND OF A RESTAURANT GIVES PRIORITY TO PHONED IN "TO GO" ORDERS OVER THE PEOPLE SITTING AND WAITING INSIDE THE RESTAURANT??? The waitress went back to the kitchen and came back out saying they were "about to start on our order after they finished the one he was on." WE HAD WAITING FOR AN HOUR AND THEY HAD NO EVEN STARTED TO MAKE OUR FOOD!!! The owner asked if we'd like some egg rolls while we were waiting but it had ALREADY BEEN AN ENTIRE HOUR at this point! If she'd come over with some food after 30 minutes we would have waiting, but there was absolutely NO EXCUSE for service this terrible! Over the hour we were there the restaurant began to empty out. The waitress said "Ok just pay for your miso soups" (She wasn't even going to comp them after her horrible service!) but the owner did at least have the decency to tell us not to pay for them, so I'll give her that. At that point we left. So disappointed in this place! I don't think I've ever had service this terrible at any restaurant. Also there was a nauseating smell from the time we sat down that my kids were complaining about, but I tried to ignore it. It smelled like a combination of a nail salon and bleach, very sickening. When I used the restroom over the hour, I noticed the smell was so strong in the back that I couldn't breathe. Have no idea what was causing this awful odor but between the stench and the terrible service we will not be returning. read more

Little Tokyo is a nice, family friendly restaurant. They have several Japanese as well as some Korean dishes & sushi. I had the Chicken Bento box, which had miso soup teriyaki chicken, California rolls, salad & rice. There is a deluxe bento box available that has 3 goyzas & tempura instead of California rolls. We visited Little Tokyo this week after a several year absence (due to the pandemic), and were very pleasantly surprised. We had remembered it as a casual neighborhood place with just okay cuisine. The first thing we noticed as we entered was that the somewhat updated restaurant was filled with customers (not common before), including more than a few Asian families. We, luckily, got the last available table and were seated immediately. Next, we discovered that the menu had been expanded, with more entrée choices (but less sushi choices). We chose the delux bento meals, at $18.99. It included miso soup (before the bento), a green salad, three goyza, vegetable and shrimp tempura with dipping sauce, beef teriyaki, and - of course - rice. All pretty typical of a bento plate (note: the regular bento, at $16.99, includes some California roll sushi slices instead of the goyza and tempura). The portions were more than ample, but that wasn't the best part: the food was absolutely delicious. The tempura was light and not at all greasy. It included a huge prawn, and large slices of yam, hubbard squash, large green beens, and a floret of broccoli. The goyza were filled with chicken and vegetables and were also deliciously light fried and ungreasy. The beef teriyaki was very ample and deliciously barbecued and seasoned like Korean bulgogi. Service was also attentive, efficient (especially for the number of customers), and very friendly. All-in-all, it was way elevated from years ago! It will now be our definite go-to Japanese restaurant in Bellingham! read more

A 'I need to go get groceries today, but I don't want to be hungry going in' staple! Little Tokyo has stuck through thick and thin over the years and there's a reason why- the food is good, the service is prompt and kind, and they've just always been a convenient location (with good-sized portions). As our family grew over the last couple years, the servers are always sweet and accommodating to our nearly two-year-old with high chairs and we discovered the kid's bento is just the right size. I recently had the beef bento. I like it much better than the teriyaki chicken (it's a little on the goopy side for me). Thank you, Little Tokyo! Always a pleasant visit. read more

Heard that it was under new management and that there was an improvement in the food and yes it true I am very pleased with my meal. The spider roll is one of the best I had in Whatcom County. Also the tempura vegetable roll had either kobocha(Japanese pumpkin) or sweet potato but it's amazing either way. The rice was seasoned well. I like this place a lot. It's pretty consistent and well priced. The gyoza are delicious and we get them by themselves as a snack before going to haggen a lot! This last time we went we decided to try out the teriyaki, I got the chicken, and my husband got the salmon. Both were very very good but I think I won ;). We tried the yam fries instead of the gyoza that time just for fun and they were so good they were gone before the food got there. (which is very very very quickly) The ambiance is cute. I like the wood pannelling for the enterance and the beer posters aren't American so they're interesting for at least a lil bit. The service is awesome. Everytime we have gone, which has to be around 5 times at this point, the service has been stellar. The food comes out fast, it's not hard to grab someone's attention, and everyone is very friendly. All in all this place is a go to for us. The food is fast and yummy. Doesn't taste like it's premade. Whoa, not sure how it took me so long to discover this great sushi spot in Barkley! I was initially skeptical, as I can be picky about my rolls. But these guys are the real deal. Menu was easy to navigate, plenty of choices without being overwhelming. Sushi was authentically prepared and beautifully presented. I had the Big Bham Roll (salmon, shrimp tempura, eel, avocado, crab mix, eel sauce, wasabi mayo) and the Rainbow Roll (yellowfin, salmon, shrimp, tobiko, avocado). Should have stopped, but couldn't help myself and ate everything! My waitress was amazing. I'm very disappointed in my take out meal tonight! I ordered the deluxe chicken bento box. The chicken was dry with very little teriyaki sauce. They changed their tempura batter and it is nowhere near as good as it was, it is now thick and doughy. There were only 4 small pieces of tempura and they used to give a nice variety of vegetables. Friendly servers. It was a packed house and they were on top of checking in with each table. I ordered the Vegetable/Tempura Udon. There wasn't much vegetables, which was quite disappointing. The broth was too sweet for my liking. Although, I'm glad they placed the shrimp tempura on the side. Also ordered the Takoyaki. It was good. They were fairly large pieces with a good amount of octopus inside. They didn't have the bonito flakes on top. I was disappointed about that. I've never been disappointed by Little Tokyo. Compared to places you'll find in Seattle it's not amazing but for Bellingham it's one of the best options we have though a bit pricey. It'll definitely satisfy your sushi cravings though. I'd suggest hitting them during happy hour (I think 2-5 mon-sat) as the prices are a bit better. Staff is super friendly and quick, the place is clean and during the summer I believe they have some outdoor seating. read more

Pricey! Friendly service, clean casual layout, good selection of special rolls. Plenty of saki choices but only house wine. They let me add cucumber and creamcheese to my roll which jacked it up to almost $16 - The outisde looked like it was completwly covered around in salmon but the actual roll just had a skimpy slice on it and was heavy on the rice. Side salad was pieces of iceberg lettuce with a tasty homemade dressing. Clean and fresh but i felt misled and ripped off. read more

Little Tokyo has got to be one of my favorite sushi places in Bellingham. The happy hour is pretty decent (albeit you have to buy a drink), the fish is always fresh and the service is usually pretty good. The chirashi bowl and crispy spicy tuna sushi roll thingy have gotten considerably smaller over the last few months, which makes me a little sad, but it doesn't bother me all that much. The eel sauce is a little gritty, which freaks me out a bit, but that's alright too. The lunch specials are a pretty good deal, particularly if you like nigiri. I usually get a spicy salmon roll with the special which I LOVE, but they've moved away from making the actual roll spicy to just putting some spicy mayo under it, which is not as appetizing. Yet another Asian style restaurant that has captured my attention. Little Tokyo of Bellingham is one of those Japanese-themed restaurants serving classic and contemporary Japanese food with a modern twist, and accompanied by Korean twists. The teriyaki bentos is affordable, filling, and food quality is superb. The tempura platter is brimming with unique veggies deep fried to perfection. A unique favorite of mine is the collection of Japanese street foods such as takoyaki (octopus stuff dough balls), yakitori (skewered meats), and gyoza (dumplings). Many of the dishes are served with rice, miso soup, and a small salad with sesame asian dressing...so be prepared to be stuffed silly. For those not so hungry, Little Tokyo also serves modern twists on sushi, but I often find their sushi covered with too much sauce sometimes. Simply ask for less in case you notice as well. The Korean Bibimbap and kimchi is also a go to favorite fo those in the mood for a Korean dish experience. To too it off, the servers are awesome! I have gone to 4 other sushi restaurants (so far) to compare their caterpillar rolls to Little Tokyo's and Little Tokyo beats the others every time! The tempura is darn good too! So crisp and light with the tastiest dipping sauce! Total comfort food! Oh yeah, and sometimes I hear the wonderful music from the Studio Ghibli movies! Love it! A satisfactory little place. Nice servers. Clean. Cute decor. A little too americanized and bland for my taste. I had the chicken teriyaki bento. Teriyaki lacked umami, tempura was a little too greasy. Still tasty though. My honey said the sushi was a little too warm. If you ever want bibimbap (a famous traditional Korean food) in Bellingham or possibly in the whole Whatcom county, this is probably the only place you can get it. Bellingham needs a Korean restaurant! This is also the only restaurant in Bellingham where the udon tastes like the street food udon in Korea (could be because they use instant mix) but if you're Korean/have been to Korea/have had Korean street food, you know exactly what I am talking about :p read more
