The positives: Food is tasty. Location is easy to get to. Rice, brown or white, included with meal. The rest: We were the only ones dinning in. Host / server was reserved. Meals arrived and one was clearly left out while the other one was being made. It was barely warm. Portions for lunch are charmingly small. Was not a fan of having to pay extra to make it vegan. (which amounted to no fish sauce). Host / server never checked on us and we had to go to the counter for them to come out of the back to take our money. First visit to Any location on On Rice, we were promptly greeted and seated in the window. The decor was rustic (a lot of wood) and very cozy and comfortable. We were there on a Saturday and our server pointed on no lunch specials (those are Monday -Friday) and pointed to dinner menu as opposed to the regular lunch menu. We were there around 1pm. We both ordered Pad Thai with tofu and it wasn't an issue but now Reading what others have written, I am pretty sure we were charged for the "dinner " Pad Thai which comes with a small but very delicious salad with peanut dressing. The lunch version comes with soup. Hmmmmmmm anyways, the service was great and the food was excellent! We are good eaters but each of us could only eat half and we took the rest home. Additional problems: - to reiterate: very, very small portion sizes - chicken satay was very dry - not marinated (no seasoning), just a small amount of peanut dipping sauce - halibut was also very dry, overcooked and insipid (lacked seasoning) - such a small amount of duck we thought they forgot to give it to us - the papaya salad smelled like fish sauce (like something else actually, but this is a g rated review) and I was worried that if I ate it I might get sickened - when we called to discuss whether our order was correct, the manager was dismissive and rude (and wouldn't even spoke directly with us when requested -- instead, the restaurant's policy was relayed to us through someone who clearly lacked authority to be helpful) I have never left a bad review, nor have I challenged a charge with my credit card company. The decor of this place is really quite nice. Beautiful wood all around the entire restaurant. You have a clear shot to the back watching the chefs whip up all the dishes for their customers. Pad Thai is a pretty amazing dish when done right. You blend sweet with sour flavors and the backend of some spicy hot flavor bites at your tongue. The server asked how spicy to make it, of course, light it up to the top a No. 5, please! In just a few minutes I had a steaming plate of Pad Thai in front of me, plated nicely. The texture, smell, and color were right on the mark. The taste was off, as it's usually equal parts of the sauce. The real key to good Pad Thai is balancing the flavor of all the ingredients. They went had way too much sugar in it and it almost tastes like candy. The overall flavor is good, just that far over the top with sugar makes it not taste right. It may be because of the area, Washington might like it sweet. The entire meal the server was very attentive, and they didn't include a gratuity for her. I gave her the 20% she really deserved. My recent visit reminded me why I stopped coming here. A friend invited me out and chose this restaurant. This is a tough one... it feels like parting ways with a dear friend. This was my go-to for Thai for several years. Great food and quick service, the beautiful location in Fairhaven completed the experience. Well, On Rice, you USED to complete me. Lately, not sure what is going on here. We walked in at 2:40 just in time to catch the tail end of Happy Hour. There were only a few customers and no waitress to be seen. When she finally arrived, she told us that Happy Hour had been nixed for unknown reasons, but we could still get lunch pricing until 3:00pm. The waitress brought our drinks then went MIA for several minutes and we had to flag her down to place our orders. It's now LITERALLY 1min. after 3:00pm. She told us, "it's dinner prices now." Seriously? She said the kitchen wouldn't adjust the price even though we arrived before 3:00pm. She said she would "try" to do something about it. Looks like she was taking heat from the kitchen to do right by her customers, and she was able to give us lunch prices. But...who wants to go out for dinner after a long week and feel that you're not valued as a customer? I won't be returning here, I'll stick with the Samish Way On Rice. The prevailing impression here, the customer's satisfaction is not priority. Maybe this is why their business is dwindling. I have also noticed over time the portions are shrinking and the meat dishes have left me searching for the meat :-( read more

Overall, I would not recommend for vegetarians. Quality: for one thing, the only item on the lunch menu that can be made vegetarian is the phad Thai, because they use fish sauce in everything. I get that this traditional Thai, but if you are a vegetarian like me, it sucks. Even the phad Thai I got was burned (it had charcoal marks and the noodles were clearly burned at the bottom). Quantity: standard Thai quantity, not enough to take some home, but enough to fill you up Price: it was over $10, which seems high for Bellingham Service: I will give their service praise because they told us it was not vegetarian upfront. read more

On Rice Barkley is one of my favorite restaurants. The staff is always friendly and the owner works hard to provide yummy dishes. There is no in-door seating and they are following protocol for pick up. My all time favorite dish is Bamee Hung, aka everything but the kitchen sink. I ordered Pad Se Ew for take out last week. The Pad Se Ew was so tasty and I only waited for 5 minutes to have my food ready! I was waiting outside of the restaurant and the stuff was nice to go outside to give me my food. Some of the Thai restaurants I tried before either did not cook broccolis long enough or over cooked. This restaurant had the broccolis cook in the perfect condition with their wide rice noodles. The broccolis look green and soft enough to eat. Best Thai food I've had in a long time, if not ever. I came here several years ago and remembered it being good, but I forgot how good! We arrived around 2:30p which was great because it was during their happy hour so appetizers were cheap with the purchase of a drink. My favorite trying was their lunch combo of red curry and pad thai. Normally I have such a hard time making up my mind between the two, so this was awesome. The curry was only available with chicken, but the flavor was fantastic with just the right amount of basil. This place is definitely worth checking out! read more

Wife and I were on an impromptu date. On Rice at Barkley and Samish had been our favorite for a long time but it was our first visit to this location. We were seated promptly by the kitchen which was noisy but it was fun to watch the chefs. The place moderately busy and the owner appeared be our server for the evening. We ordered tea, drunken noodle 5 stars and pad thai 5+ star along with oolong tea. The tea was delicious. The server (owner?) forgot our order. barely apologized. The food here can be tasty but my meal last night was poorly cooked so it was a disappointing meal. Our phad thai noodles had hot to warm (temperature wise) portions and some very cool to cold parts . Not sure what the cook was doing here. I would have asked for a change but the wait staff never checked up on us nor made any eye contact in passing us the one time he did. I mentioned it when he came to deliver the bill. In order to stay unbiased we will focus primarily on the food and not the service or management. The upside to this though, is that we've tasted nearly every single dish on the menu! See our "FAVORITES" section if you want to see what else is good here OTHER than Chicken Pad Thai :p PROs: * Tasty tasty tasty! We've been to plenty of other Thai restaurants after leaving Bellingham, and we agree this place is still the best in terms of taste. And just to reiterate, we've had nearly every item on the menu. * Free side of rice with your entrée! Many dishes come with a side of white or brown rice with your entrée. Most places do not do this. * There is a large back room in the Fairhaven location. It is not visible from the main area of the restaurant. This room is great for booking a meeting or party. Make sure you request the room ahead of time. Ask your server for details. * Thai music is played throughout the restaurant. It's set to a relatively low volume so it's a nice addition to the ambiance. CONs: * A little pricey? We wouldn't call the food expensive, but it's definitely not cheap. * "Authentic Thai Cuisine" is a VERY relative word. We'll put it this way... Do you have any Thai friends? Yah... we'll bet money that few if ANY of their parent's home cooking tastes like this haha. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... as we have stated, the food is great! This is the newest location of On Rice in Bellingham, I believe there are 4 in all. We went heer for a birthday celebration, with 14 adults and 2 crazy kids. Lucky for us there is a seperate room, outside of the immediate restaurant that they let us use. The room is actually big enough for a group of 50. The service was great and the food fresh and delicious with the right amount of spice for requested stars. We started with Spring Rolls, Fresh Rolls, and Calamari, then had Chicken Drunken Noodles (aka Phad Kee Mao) Green Curry, Duck Curry, Hot Basil Beef, and much more, no complaints on anything, and good size portions. And they have a whole martini menu, yum lychee martinis, as well as a good selection of Asian beers. Highly recommended for parties as well as lunch and dinner. read more

This is good Thai food, I'm not gonna lie. I have loved the flavor and the service every time I have been here. However, I'm a vegetarian which makes eating at a Thai place pretty scary. The first time I ate at On Rice, I asked the server to make sure my Massaman curry was vegetarian--made without fish sauce or shrimp paste. She assured me that it was. It was delicious. A few weeks later I returned with my boyfriend and we had a different waitress. We explained to her that we were vegetarians and then proceeded to order. I ordered the Massaman curry again and she immediately stopped me and informed me that they use a pre-mixed base for that curry which has shrimp paste in it. WAH. I got something else, but didn't enjoy it because of the little shrimp ghost sitting on my shoulder whispering evil things to me. So now, as delicious as On Rice was, I can't eat here anymore :( I just can't take my chances with a server who doesn't know what is in their dishes. I'm so appreciative of that one informed waitress we had who cleared everything up for me, but I can't get over it. Maybe someday I can pretend it didn't happen and I will go back. I really want to praise On Rice, I really do. But I can't. Their food is so inconsistent I don't know who they are nowadays or if their food can still be considered "Thai" by east Asian standards. Is it authentic? What the hell is that thing? Should I call the Health department and have them check into this? Sometimes the food is good, other times it's absolutely awful. Last night I ordered the standard phad thai with chicken satay... over $20 not including tip. Price is ok in theory but what you receive in value is nowhere near what they charge. The satay is really small in portion - four skewers of bland, extremely thinly-sliced chicken with watery peanut sauce. Most of the phad consisted strictly of their rice noodles and ketchup with about three tiny pieces of meat hidden throughout the dish. It was over seasoned with salt and not spicy at all for the four stars I had requested. The white rice that it came with was mushy having been cooked with way too much liquid. I couldn't eat it. Service is pretty good. Friendly enough, nice atmosphere. Sadly I don't see myself going back in the near future. Maybe I'll give it another go-around once I check up on the status of the Health Department's findings. read more

I've had consistent food between both of their samish and harris locations every time I have gone. They have great prices for the serving size of their food, and I always have some to take home with me; or I can share it with a friend. What I really appreciate is that they can tone down the spice or raise it to the max for both me and my boyfriend. Plus their peanut-sauce is to die for. I've only been here twice, this past weekend and about a year and a half ago. Both times I really liked this place! I love their starter salad with the peanut sauce on top. I ordered tofu pad thai as my main dish and it was very good. However they charge you more when it's dinner time which is unfortunate. My sister got the Massaman curry and loved it. We took some pretty picky eaters here and they also really enjoyed it. The only thing that turned me off from this place was that this last time the waitress was very cold and did not even make an effort to pretend to be happy. Slowly making my way to all 3 locations of On Rice. I usually go to the one on Sammish. The fresh rolls were quite fresh indeed but over priced for the quantity received and ingredients in the wrap. $8 for mostly noodles and lettuce... No thanks! The sauce was decent but I would have preferred a peanut or sweet chilly sauce versus the almost hoisin like sauce that came with the rolls. Little starter salad were great as usual. The magic is all in the peanut sauce. I wish they sold that stuff in a container! My entree, the spicy eggplant dish, was not spicy at all (3 stars- should have gotten 5). I did like the eggplant and veggies. I got mine with fresh tofu. The sauce was flavorful and went well with my brown rice. My friend got pad see ew. Way too oily... And the egg was burnt. At least the broccoli tasted good and gave the dish some color to the otherwise brown pile of oily noodles. Overall the food was mediocre for the price but the service was great!
