After having read the mostly good reviews in Yelp and other places, I was really looking forward to eating at the Lobster Pound! The first night we tried eating there, our timing was bad and they stopped serving before we got there. No problem, we made it a point to arrive plenty early the next day. Not surprisingly, the wait line was long and the folks all relaxing outside waiting for their turn to be called, raised our level of anticipation even further. We ordered stuffed portobello mushrooms and the scallops wrapped with bacon for starters. Lobster Bisque for soup and for the main courses, we ordered a 1 1/2 lb lobster, the lobster stew and the lobster pie. The food was delivered quickly enough so that was not a problem. The lobster bisque, which came first, was pedestrian. I have had many lobster bisques in many places and this one was ok... nothing wrong with it... just nothing particularly notable. Perhaps 3.5 on a scale of 5. The scallops wrapped in bacon were delivered while we were having the bisque. Again this dish was ok... nothing particularly wrong with it, perhaps a lack of inspiration or uninspired execution. Normally, some of the flavor in a grilled scallops comes from the grilling and I would look for some color or grill marks on the scallops to reflect that preparation. In this case, the scallops benefitted from the bacon alone and had no flavor indicating they had been grilled in the preparation; the lackluster flavor reflected it.
The lobster stew was a huge disappointment. When it came, it was presented warm at best. It certainly had sufficient pieces of lobster in it. Unfortunately, lobster stew or any stew is not made by simply taking milk or half and half, dropping in the meat and adding a liberal amount of chive. That is what this lobster stew looked and tasted like; thin watery, tasting strongly of chive and with quite abit of smallish lobster pieces in the bowl bottom. If someone told me that they ran out of the finished lobster stew and decided to make some on the quick by throwing those ingredients into a pot, warming slightly and plating it, I would not have been surprised by the end product. When I mentioned it to the staff as I was paying the bill at the cashiers station (they asked me how everything was and then seemed very put off when I responded in the negative... *hint* an old lawyer's axiom says that one should never ask a question if one is not prepared to hear the answer), I was told that all stews were thin and watery; that was supposed to be how they are prepared, they suggested and as long as there was a good amount of lobster in the bowl, I really had nothing to be dissatisfied about. OK...
The lobster pie was good enough. Quite a bit of good size lobster chunks in it; definitely had a taste of sherry, good crust. From a taste perspective, very serviceable. Was it worth 29.95? Not even close.
Lastly, the 1 1/2 lb lobster. Seriously, a place that serves so many lobsters each day, week, season, would be hard pressed to screw up the prep of a fresh lobster. No problem there at all. The lobster tasted as expected. Was more than a little surprised at the charge for the steamed lobster. The receipt said the lobster weighed 1 pound and 10 ounces; Thanks, I appreciate the precision with which the weight was provided. That surely explained the $32.46 charge for the 1 1/2 lb steamed lobster!!!!
The sides that were presented in support of the main dishes were also lackluster. The rice pilaf that came with the lobster pie was good; the side of cold slaw was good. The string bean dishes were borderline; still trying to figure out exactly what seasoning was put on them to leave such an after taste.
All in all, my assessment of the first (and last) time eating at the Ogunquit Lobster Pound was that this place clearly gets so much business that they have turned into a factory whose sole focus is getting the people in, served and out the door and little regard for taste or quality. I don't know who is minding the cooks in the kitchen but if someone payed as much attention to the food quality and preparation as they clearly do to charging premium prices for their seafood, the experience I and likely many others like myself had at an establishment like this one would be much better. read more
