This was a takeout order during recent weekend in Bethany Beach with my boyfriend, and overall a great pick! We enjoyed the fish tacos, crab mac and cheese, and the boom boom shrimp - all of which were delicious. Takeout packaging here is really great which I always appreciate, especially in restaurants that are more known for their dine in service like this one. I want to like this place. The service is pleasant. The food is delicious. The reason why I'm not giving them full marks is because they don't mark their menu for food allergies. In my case, I'm allergic to gluten. I was told that I had to ask. Really? I had to wait to ask the waitstaff, they then conferred with the chef, then they got back with me. A large part of eating out is the experience. This routine dampens my enjoyment. It's frustrating and makes a five-star experience a four-star experience. The fire roasted octopus was seasoned and cooked perfectly. The shishito peppers were fabulous (yuzu mayo...so good). The crispy cauliflower was almost as tasty. The beet and arugula salad was not too shabby either. When you eat at Off the Hook (which you should)---please remind them to mark their menu for allergies and not to treat many of their customers (including me) like second-class diners. If the dish is naturally gluten-free, mark it, it's not that difficult. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our way to OC. It had been many years since we'd been there and it was so nice inside. We were seated right away and drink orders were taken. I got a berry mojito that was delicious! Husband got a delicious cocktail as well. I ordered a crab cake sandwich- it was good- not outstanding but it was fresh and had a lot of crab . We went to Off the Hook for the first time last night and the experience was great! The restaurant wasn't crowded when we arrived and we decided to sit at the bar to get drinks and appetizers. The bartender, Kelly, was extremely friendly and personable. For drinks, we ordered an orange crush and a Nanticoke nectar. For appetizers, we had the pesto fries and boom boom shrimp. Both appetizers came out very quick and were large portions. The boom boom shrimp had a very tasty sauce and it wasn't spicy. The pesto fries were very good, however pretty messy because they had a lot of oil on them. The inside of the restaurant was an under the sea theme and they had octopuses painted on the walls. The decor was very beachy as well. We will definitely be back soon! read more

My family had a great dinner here! We tried a few of their drinks and they were very tasty! The food was amazing and delicious and the waitress was very attentive. It doesn't have an ocean view but the food is so good I didn't care. I ordered the steak and a month later I vividly remember how good it was. To clarify: Food deserves 4 stars, all else is 2-3: inattentive and careless service attitude (we were not offered bread and we later noticed other tables were given bread), tired decor (old carpet needs a face lift). We wouldn't be as critical had the pricing been more reasonable and straight forward: We didn't appreciate the "convenience fee" of 3.5% for the convenience of using a credit card: is anybody paying cash at such an expensive restaurant? What a lovely dining experience in the heart of Bethany. You can tell this restaurant's ownership takes great pride in their attention to detail as every intricacy from the sweet bread and oil to start, to the delicious mixed drinks and cocktails. The food was a hit as well. Size-able apps, we ordered the mussels which were enormous and bursting with flavor. Could've used more bread to soak up he delicious juice. The smoked fish dip was excellent as well. For my main I ordered the shrimp and grits, which has a similar base sauce as the mussels but the pairing with the cheesy grits was a perfect combo. The ambiance is calm, and nice homey feel too it with very cool decor throughout the restaurant. The bar was packed from 3-6pm as the happy hour special seem to be great at the bar during that time. We had very high expectations of this restaurant given that it was touted by many websites. Overall, the food did not quite hit the mark for us although we did enjoy the experience. For the price, I'm not sure it's quite worth it. But if you order only one thing, The mussels are fantastic. A generous portion comes in a delicious broth soaked in garlic, tomato, and bacon. By far the best thing we ate and we gobbled it up, with extra orders of bread. The shrimp and grits was much appreciated. The sauce seems to be the same sauce as the one used in the mussels, which is fine since it was so good. I also had the grilled tuna on rice. It was pretty flavorless despite the pineapple salsa which accompanied it. Fish tacos were meh. The airline chicken with broccoli Was solid. But overall, it was not a knock your socks off kind of meal, especially for the price. Service was delightful and we enjoyed an outdoor table with gorgeous weather. Would I recommend this place? Sure. But I'm not sure it's necessarily the best seafood restaurant I've ever been to. Nevertheless, worth a visit if you are in the mood. read more

It is about principles, service, and integrity. That is the reason for lower stars. Off The Hook website states they have 1/2 priced entrees from Tuesday to Thursdays. However, once we were seated, we found out that on Christmas week this was not honored. They said there was a said beside the door. First of all, it is not about the money, it is about principal and service. Our waitress was a lovely young lady. She actually brought over the manager per the request of myself and my husband. He apologized and added by saying it is hard to change the website, I find that hard to believe, he then offered a round of drinks, we do not drink, he said dessert would be on him​. When the bill came only one dessert was paid for. If a restaurant advertises specials, they should be honored to show that they have integrity and care about a customer, whether local or not. It is only about principle. We also listened to another table talk about the same situation. Having knowledge of the food industry, this was not handled in the most professional way that an upscale restaurant should do. It is the whole package for long term continued success. Hopefully, they will step it up going forward. Unfortunately we will not be going back. Fortunately, the area does have many other great restaurants. With that said; Very nice atmosphere. TLDR: Do not trust these people, about anything that isn't written down. Our very charming waiter was deceptive about the house special and never disclosed that it was nearly the price of two entrees. Despite the food being good, we left our meal feeling lied to, feeling like these people were one step away from thievery. The food was pretty good, but our waiter was deceptive. He advertised the house special as being a surf and turf that combined the filet mignon with some of their seafood. He pointed out the filet on the menu, and started talking about the surf and turf combo without ever mentioning the price. No special menu was ever provided, so the only price we had to compare it to was the price of the filet. One member of my party even asked to substitute a side. The waiter said it would simply be $2 more, and she happily agreed, not knowing that the special was already $25 more than the filet: he conveniently left that part out. When the check came, we paid it, not wanting to make a scene, but it was disgusting treatment. The price wasn't worth the combo either, the surf part of the combo included the surf part of the entree, but we could have ordered the full entree with sides included for only $9 more. read more

Our server Brenna was great as she never left our drinks go empty, plus she was always checking in to be sure everything was good. Went to Off the Hook back on Fourth of July weekend with my partner and his family for our vacation "fancy" dinner. On a weekend night, they sat us outside almost immediately, but I watched a few families wait 30+ minutes for indoor seating. The way the neighboring buildings lined up, there was ample shade during our early evening meal, which made for a great July-at-the-beach dinner experience. It seemed like they have a daily-changing menu, just one page. 3/5 of us ordered the Crab Cakes, served on a bed of couscous salad. The crab cakes were fist sized and extremely delicious, but the other two in my party found multiple large shell fragments (half the size of a penny) in their cakes. The manager came out and apologized, and a few weeks later, they mailed a gift card. I also ordered a pretty cocktail off the menu, but I don't remember which one. The waitress was very knowledgeable and patient, and she was quite familiar with the food and drink menus, happy to offer suggestions for my father in law's wine. read more

Great... and not just for beach food. We were at Bethany for a week and ate exclusively at popular local hangouts along or very near the water. Some meals were OK, and others were dreadful. Nothing was good. Until we stopped at this place on our way out of town. My wife had charred octopus, and it was outstanding. I had their shrimp Po' Boy, filled with large shrimp, fried to crunchy deliciousness. However, don't expect to pick the thing up; this is a knife-and-fork kind of sandwich. The server was pleasant and honest. Wore his mask properly the whole time. When we asked what wine he would recommend, he honestly said that he didn't know and that's fine than just making up some wine he heard earlier. I got the spicy margarita and will go back to this place just to have that again. I highly recommend it if you're the adventurous type. I had the Pan-seared day boat scallops and was a bit disappointed with the sauce. BUT the scallops were amazing and fresh! Their Chesapeake Cobb salad is good. I would recommend that if you were to eat at this place. The place needs to be ventilated better. We entered and it was smokey inside the restaurant since they have an open kitchen. Another first time try, mainly due to the fact that every summer we come there is over an hour wait. Which is a pretty good sign if you ask me! We sat outside so as of now I am not an expert on the inside but it looked very nice. The service was fine and everyone worked in cohesion there. Our table started with the crab dip which was so good. A lot of crab and just the right amount of cheese. I found out that their crackers are made in house which gave them amazing flavor. Most of the table went with the fish tacos (if you choose fish it's fried cod, the other option is shrimp). I got the Blackened Swordfish which was heavenly. I 100% recommend getting this as the fish was juicy and the kale was just perfection. Another hit at the table was the wings, they were cooked just right and have a wonderful glaze on them. Lastly, the bourbon glazed salmon was also delicious. They don't take reservations so you kinda have to take a chance with the wait times. Overall a great spot with great food. read more

On our first night in Bethany Beach we took fellow Yelper's recommendations and tried Off The Hook. This upscale seafood place has a good vibe. While we waited for our table, we enjoyed cocktails at the full service bar complete with wine list, top shelf liquor and a specialty cocktail menu. Our server John was friendly and attentive. The focaccia and seasoned EVO arrived promptly. The focaccia was fresh and delicious and the EVO was as seasoned nicely and had a full body flavor. Fried Calamari appetizer was an excellent choice, tender and crispy drizzled with a spicy mayo. The BLACKENED SWORDFISH was tender and nicely seasoned and paired well with the kale sauté and hummus. The shrimp tacos were ok but nothing to write home about. The pico was bland and there was not quite enough spicy Mayo on the shrimp to provide flavor. There were 4 nice size crunchy shrimp in each taco but only real flavor came from the pickled onions. The dirt rice was very good with chorizo sausage it had a nice sweet heat flavor. Overall high marks for presentation, wait staff and atmosphere. The meal aside from the average shrimp tacos was quite good and I would highly recommend trying Off The Hook for a very satisfying meal. I would even consider going back and choosing from one of the many other seafood offerings, all which looked pretty amazing. No dessert tonight, we were too full! read more

Went to Off The Hook again while in town. This would be our 3rd time here. We have come here every year and every time we were extremely happy with the food. We started with Calamari and then had the Scallops dish and the Cioppino. Both dishes were amazing and we finished off with a special pumpkin bread pudding with vanilla ice cream and drizzled caramel. It was Off The Hook! It's sad when a good restaurant tries a bit too hard. Going to the coast means seafood. The Chesapeake is amazing since not only does it have fabulous seafood, it also has a long, rich heritage of preparing and serving it simply and deliciously. The food at Off the Hook is good, but it seems like there are added bits that probably aren't needed. The tacos have either deep fried shrimp or fish, when grilled or broiled would have suited them better. They also include both cole slaw and pickled onions which hide the taste of the shrimp rather than complement it. They're served with Dirty Rice, which would be nice on it's own, but seems like an odd complement for seafood tacos. Fish and Chips are generous with the chips, and the batter is light and crunchy. I'm not exactly sure what the pesto was on the fries since I couldn't taste anything other than fried potatoes. The crusted Mahi was also good, but was more New Orleans than Chesapeake, which is too bad, because you couldn't really taste the fish rather than the seasoning, peppers, onions, and other items. Service was good, and the ambiance was also pleasant (the very bright LED lamps on the table can be easily switched off) It feels like this is a place that wants to make a great impression, but doesn't quite know how to do it. read more
