    The salmon entree. $35.
    David L.

I wanted to enjoy this so much more. We live full-time near Bethany Beach, but just got around to trying Off the Hook for the first time last night. The highlights (and lowlights): The service was awful: We arrived at 5:17 and were seated at 5:22. Drinks took 26 minutes to deliver and the order was wrong. My FiL clearly asked for a Pinot Grigio, but a Sangria was delivered. Cody, the server*, politely repeated that he ordered the Sangria, but that did not happen (my FiL drinks only dry wines). We waited to toast my in-laws anniversary, but had to wait another 7-8 minutes for the correct glass of wine to be delivered. There is no attention to detail in the dining room. The staff are on island time. The first appetizer arrived at 6:08--46 minutes after we sat down! At 6:20, I bussed our table. (After dinner, I bussed our table a second time). Even trying to pay the check Cody was MIA. He came by the table perhaps six times from 5:22-6:45. *There seems to be a lot of summer hires here--folks that want to hang out at the beach, but need to work to pay the rent. The training has be to incredibly minimal. I would guess no family meal, no 5-minute daily wine pairing rundown...basically no front of the house training. When the customer has to stack dirty plates and get a busboy's attention to grab them TWICE...not good, especially for the prices at Off the Hook. The food was quite hit or miss. The good: the crab bisque was excellent...really amazing! The scallop appetizer was also delicious with a base of grits and bacon underneath. However... The bad: we wanted to share the scallop appetizer and asked Cody how many scallops came with that. He said "three". The app was delivered with TWO scallops (Yes...TWO scallops for $19). They were not huge scallops...so 16/20 count. Wholesale, $18 a pound, less than a dollar each. To charge $19 for an appetizer with TWO scallops? Wow! The dish cost perhaps $3.25. A bottle of wine that retails for $15 is $30 in a restaurant. I get it, but marking up TWO scallops with some grits to $19 is insane. I asked the manager about the missing scallop. He advised that the entree came with three scallops--the app two. The entree was $39!! $39 for three scallops! If these were U/8 or U/15 scallops, I maybe could see it, but two 16/20 scallops for $19 and three for $39 is nuts. The pappardelle (appetizer portion) was completely flavorless. It was not cooked with any salt and pepper. It tasted like buttered noodles you find on a kid's menu. Adding salt and pepper (at the table) did little to fix it. My wife's pappardelle entree was equally bland. She tried mine; I tried hers. She looked right at me and said "There is no seasoning on this!". My thought exactly. My FiL had the salmon. He reported that it was tasty. While it was cooked well, $35 for an approximately 5 oz portion is again nuts. As a local, I really wanted to enjoy this meal. It was an anniversary dinner for my in-laws. $260 for four people with bad service and hit-or-miss food and the portions described is not good. I'm not a tourist. Lastly, I cannot forget to mention the FLIES. This is an INSIDE, white tablecloth dining establishment with $30-40 entrees, NOT a beachfront bar. 3-4 houseflies, accompanied by a gnat, joined us for dinner. Crazy. Bethany Beach, Delaware has limited options for dining and cars lined up 100 deep on the main road into town. This can be the only explanation for Off the Hook being so busy, so often. Tourists from NYC and Philadelphia don't bat an eye at paying $39 for three scallops. I don't know what other explanation makes sense.

We had a wonderful experience! Our server was so sweet, friendly, and attentive throughout our meal, making sure we had everything we needed. The manager also stopped by our table several times to check on us, which really showed how much they care about their guests. We had the short ribs over mashed potatoes , shishito peppers, mussels and Caesar salad . Food was great only reason didn't give 5 stars was the mussels were super small. Great service from start to finish--we'll definitely be back!

Local seafood spot with a nice, oceanic vibe! Chandra provided great service the Wednesday night we dined here and took advantage of off season discounts. We enjoyed the swordfish dinner and cioppino dinner-both delightfully prepared and delicious!

OFF THE HOOK IN BETHANY!!!!! I'm reviewing this on behalf of my lovely daughter and my family vacationing in the area. In short, she simply loves the spot and "ordered the kung poa calamari, tuna tataki , her meemaw got a shrimp spaghetti in a vodka sauce and her mom got some salad. All was at minimum a 7.5/10. Drinks were also amazing. Service was good and quick and good atmosphere". Pretty sure my grandson got the scraps and crumbs. GO GET HOOKED!

As you can see from my more than ten past reviews over 4 years and my last review in August 2025 this is now one of my top three happy hour restaurants during the off season. I will summarize my four most recent happy hour off season visits. We were first here at the bar with my six family and friends. Well finally the off season happy hour half price dinner entrees have finally returned here starting around mid October with pretty much the same entrees and menu as last year. They subsequently updated the half price entrees in early November. All items have pretty much returned here except for some new entrees. The good news is that at least two new half price happy hour dinner entrees were added including the surf and turf with espresso encrusted 4 ounce demi filet mignon with two skewered shrimps, yukon mash, tomato garnash with blue cheese in the middle of the tomato for $40 or half price for only $20. I never had espresso encrusted filet mignon, therefore I ordered and enjoyed mine medium rare. I could barely taste the encrusted espresso. I ended my dinner with my favorite Fiddlehead's draft honey porter for $6. My total bill was $111 with half price discount of $36.50 so my final bill was $77. On my second return I enjoyed my ahi tuna rice bowl with broccoli, ginger fried house rice, sprouts and ginger vinaigrette for $36 or half price for $18. My total bill was $72 excluding gratuity. On my third return I again enjoyed the espresso encrusted 4 ounce demi filet mignon, which I had ordered medium rare, but was over cooked to medium. I did not complain about returning my filet for a replacement, however I did show it to bartender Dennis. Next time I will order my filet rare. On my fourth return I enjoyed my usual cosmos and my ahi tuna rice bowl which was always properly cooked ahi style. Bartender Dennis always remembers I prefer a little extra spice, without me even asking for my Sriracha. Dennis recommended both of the above entrees. See my most recent pic of the new menu. Chef Cowan waved to me at the bar. Bartender Dennis served us very well supported by our usual excellent recommendations and conversations. Chandra and Cameron also said hello. The staff here are very professional, knowledgeable and friendly. On Black Friday I purchased another $1k in gift cards for the off season from Off The Hook and Hooked in OC. Needless to say we will continue to return here for happy hour to spend our $1k.

    Halibut with wild mushrooms
    Stuart M.

One of several hook restaurants . We started with a beet and arugula salad. Fresh ingredients with a nice vinaigrette got us off to a good start. Complementary bread slices and seasoned olive oil accompanied the salad spoke to the generosity of the restaurant. Speaking about largess, the restaurant started its buy one entree, get a lesser priced one free on Tuesday through Thursday. This deal is off season only. October through May. I had the halibut. It was cooked perfectly leaving it moist and tender. It was a humus for texture, wild mushrooms and onions that popped. My wife had scallops over polenta and corn chutney. The latter was great, and the halibut was excellent (i am allergic ) according to my wife. Both of our entrees had generous port Alas, too full for dessert, but it should be obvious. This is a can't miss restaurant.

    "Shrimp n grits"
    Greg S.

This restaurant is anything but: ( add name of restaurant here) The food was an over compensation of style, taste, and execution. Let's start with my drink. I order a raspberry mint julep. First off...no. A mint julep just needs to be only..... My first dish ordered was there "staple" shrimp n grits w pulled pork. Again...no. At this point that's called a variation of shrimp gumbo. Ain't no shrimp n grits has any beef in it whatsoever. Also, the ration to shrimp n grits was 70/ 30. Last bit on this dish: All art, no flavor. Dish #1 sent back Dish # 2 ordered: jerk checkin wings w an added side of "sweet potatoe pie". Wings? Yes those were good. The "pie"? A) not a pie B) not sweet. Nor a potato. This one tasted sour. The claims were of notes w nosh, nutmeg, and Cinnamon. Ummm, when 3 people taste it and don't taste said notes....that ain't it. Side dish #1 sent back. Service: I do appreciate the patience with me since I had made several sent backs. So I thank you said staff for working with me Ambiance: listen..i get that here in DE it's the season of Flys...but to have them indoors and constantly flying around my legs....not only is it annoying.... At least we had a citronella candle brought out to our table to sit on top (if you the reader is curious...it didn't help)

Ask the Community - Off the Hook

    Do they take reservations?

No they do not take reservations.

    Is there outdoor dining available?

There were a few outdoor tables, maybe 4 or 5, by the entrance and effectively next to the car park, and there are some planters around to make it look nice, but the majority of the seating is indoors.

Is there parking available near restaurant?

Yes. Never have a problem with parking. It's a smaller resturant, so less cars. Hope that helps

    Do they take reservations?

No, but might might for large party's.

What are the gluten free options? Also, do they still do 50% off fish entrees on Tuesday?

I believe the offer that deal in the winter months. There are plenty of gluten free options. Lots of fresh fish, vegetables.

Any vegan options or accommodations available?

Hi Emma! Thank you for reaching out. We are happy to modify most dishes to provide a vegan meal.…

What is their happy hour specials?

Mojitos, certain drinks, Rockfish tacos, crap dip and more. So good!

The location is wonderful, located right in the town of Bethany. We sat outside on a nicely done patio that was relaxing and perfect for the weather. The waitress was very accommodating and well trained. She asked about allergies and made sure we had what we needed. When we did not like a dish, they did comp us, which was unexpected. The negatives unfortunately outweigh the positives as we do not intend to eat there in the future. First, it was very overpriced for a tapas place. Each tapa was about 22-25 dollars. These were not a reasonable price for tapas. We ended up leaving hungry. The food was presented very nicely, however, the food lacked in flavor and execution. The tapas all had good concepts but none were great and some were simply bad. The cauliflower was coated in something that made it taste burnt. The gnocchi were not even gnocchi and the dish lacked balance as it was super sweet. The scallops were well cooked but the mushrooms and corn had no flavor. The bison sliders were decent but the buns were hard and burnt and the slider had no sauce. The tuna crudo was probably the best one but it was very oily. Again, good concepts, just poor execution. Cocktails were upwards of 16 dollars and a glass of wine was about the same. I could walk down the street and get a drink for much less. We got other people's food twice as they have people carrying out food that aren't our server. I wish I could rate this place higher but it is not worth the money they are charging.

This remains one of my top five spots for happy hour at the bar or dining with family, thanks to…read moremore than ten past visits showing how great it is inside or out. Here is a breakdown of my two most recent experiences. During a solo outing with a friend, we arrived just before 4 PM to grab two coveted bar stools right as happy hour began, which now starts at 4 PM instead of 3 PM. I went with my usual two happy hour pepper creek punches and paired them with the happy hour fried chicken sandwich, adding a side of very good hand-cut fries for an extra $2. The portion was large enough that I brought half of the sandwich home for lunch. Bartender Trevor offered a sample of their malty nitro center of gravity english mild draft beer (4.5% ABV), and I loved the notes of toffee, chocolate, and toasted bread so much that I ended my dinner with two full glasses. Thanks to excellent service from bartenders Bill and Trevor, my solo total came out to a reasonable $36 before tip. On my next visit, I brought my family of four on a Wednesday around 6 PM. We were instantly accommodated at booth table 53 on the right side of the restaurant. They had recently updated their regular menu, and I decided to try the Korean beef bowl for $24, which features soy marinated sliced steak, vegetables, greens, an umami glaze, a fried egg, and spicy mayo served over basmati rice. Our server, Cate J., took wonderful care of us, and the total bill for the family was $152 excluding gratuity. Whether for happy hour or dinner, we will absolutely keep coming back.

Our first visit took place on Mother's Day around 4:00 PM. Because brunch was still being served and dinner didn't begin until 4:15 PM, I booked a table for two, and we passed the time at the bar. We caught some live music while I enjoyed a $16 Maker's Mark Manhattan before settling the bar tab. Once dinner service opened at 4:15 PM, we were seated inside at table 45 to escape a breezy outdoor deck. It turned out to be the debut day for their new menu. I ordered another $16 Maker's Mark Manhattan and the $36 seafood stew--a rich combination of fish, clams, shrimp, fennel, pepper, onion, Spanish chorizo, and tomato seafood broth accompanied by grilled bread. It was a generous portion, so I brought the remaining stew home to enjoy later that evening. To conclude the meal, I tried the Lucky 7 porter from Evolution Craft Brewing Company ($7), which featured dark dried fruit and sweet toffee tones balanced by notes of chocolate, coffee, and smoke. Our server, Brendan V., did an excellent job caring for us and demonstrated great knowledge of the new menu, even while managing a large outdoor table with five children. Our total bill for that evening came to $114, excluding gratuity. We returned on Memorial Day for a second dinner, this time in a group of five that included family and a friend visiting from Scottsdale, AZ. Since the outdoor fire tables were completely full, we secured a table on the left side of the restaurant. I began with a spicy mango margarita for $14, which featured tequila, mango, lime, agave, jalapeno, and a tajin rim, and opted for the $36 seafood stew once again. Unfortunately, the cocktails were inconsistent this time; I ordered a Maker's Mark Manhattan up, but it tasted like watered-down bourbon. When a second Manhattan tasted exactly the same, I decided to cancel the order. Nevertheless, our server Nadine K. provided excellent service throughout the evening, and our bill came out to $92 before gratuity. Ultimately, we all agreed that we would gladly visit again.

Entrees were crabcakes, a Caesar salad topped with a crabcake, seafood bucatini, and seafood stew. Service was indifferent at best. Server did not offer any specials until asked and did not know how to handle problems (see below). The appetizers came out and were fine. The cauliflower was fried, but not as crispy as a really good fried cauliflower. The chipotle aioli had a nice flavor. Calamari was well fried, but the sauce was overly salty. Then came the entrees. The seafood bucatini was the highlight in that it was perfectly acceptable. For $52, I expect a meaty crabcake with lots of jumbo lump. This crabcake was loaded with filler. As for the caesar salad, the menu says it comes with "Shaved parmesan, anchovies, croutons, house made caesar dressing." But the salad came out with no croutons. When we asked the server, he said they ran out of croutons and he needed to bring the manager over to offer a solution (which turned out to be sunflower seeds, smashed cashews, and leftover bread from the kitchen - when we said we'll take them, the server said we may be charged for keeping all three). Lettuce was also the top of the romaine, which was mushy and needed the non-existent croutons to save it. Then there's the seafood stew. The bowl came out with no spoon and no bread (and no plate for shells, but I guess that's not a necessity). They brought a spoon when asked, but said it doesn't come with bread, and we would need to order bread if we wanted it. Seemed odd, but okay. The broth was ridiculously salty and borderline inedible. We paid and left feeling like it was fine, but we probably won't return on future visits to Bethany. Then we checked the menu to see what it said about the seafood stew. Sure enough, it is supposed to come with "grilled bread." Perhaps they ran out of it with the croutons, but to say we would need to order it separately reflects a lack of knowledge of the menu, complete indifference, blatant lying, or all of the above. Beyond that, the pop music was far too loud for a restaurant that wants to be a decent restaurant. The view was nice, but I feel like I just threw my money into the ocean.

Surfin' Betty's Burger Bar is an absolute hot spot for Bethany Beach... and any other local beach…read moregoer that desires AMAZING food!! On our annual Bethany Beach vacation, we searched for the latest restaurant openings and Surfin' Betty's looked like a place worth trying... WOW- IT CERTAINLY IS!! The menu is mind numbingly good!!! We had such a hard time picking our meals because everything sounds amazing from the burgers to the fried chicken sandwiches to the wings to the hot dogs. The abundant toppings, the clever names, and the clear passion for food jumps off the page!!! Maybe it's called Surfin' Betty's because you will keep Surfin and Surfin through the menu on a tidal wave of salivation!!!! We did an online order for takeout. Modifications were simple and the entire ordering process was a breeze. The restaurant is down Garfield Pkwy inland, but only a few minutes from Bethany Beach. The parking lot is jam packed as a few good restaurants are all in the same plazas. But patience is a virtue and spots open up! FYI it's a good thing if a popular place is popular... just remember that! The food pickup was even simpler. Clearly tagged and bagged.. even with a Bag 1 of 2 to ensure that I grabbed both. The order had hand written notes on each container to even make handing it out so easy with an order for a large family. THIS FOOD was THE BEST that we ate all week at Bethany Beach!!! Unanimous decision from the entire family! Highlights - Jam Good Bacon Burger - with two smash patties crisped and greasy, a gooey bacon jam, and applewood bacon that was utter perfection, this burger is still in my dreams!!! Pittsburgh Dawg - my hometown represented 7 hours away, I had to order it! The beef link with creamy coleslaw and crispy French fries all held by a buttery Texas Toast - I hate to say it .... But Primanti's should take notes Sweet Thai Chicken Wings - crispy wings with the tastiest sauce ever. Perfect balance of sweetness, savory, and spice!!! I'd eat Sweet Thai as a salad dressing or use it as a toothpaste - I loved it!! The restaurant itself was super well decorated too. This location has been through new occupants for the past few vacations, but I no doubt will see Surfin Betty's next year and for years to come!!

I was looking for a good burger place in Delaware when I saw the high reviews for Surfin Betty's…read moreBurger Bar and I decided to give it a try. With that known, I found it to be a bit overrated. To begin, I ordered the mozzarella moons for an appetizer and they were excellent. The breading was crispy and the cheese was fresh with a great pull. These were easily the best part of the meal. After that, I ordered the Jam Good Bacon Burger with fries and the results were mediocre. To explain, the burger was overcooked and the meat was bland. Similarly, the bacon jam was over the top sweet and just didn't work well with the burger. On the other hand, the bun was fresh and had nice flavor. But, it was still a below average burger. On the contrary, the fries were pretty good. To intricate, the fries were thin, crispy, and tasted hand-cut. To finalize, Surfin Betty's offers mediocre burgers, but the fries and mozzarella moons are worth your time.
