Breakfast buffet with Santa was a great disappointment. We were a party of 11 for a reservation at 12:00, we were so excited to create a new memory for this Christmas season, but this breakfast buffet was total failure. If you wanted a bagel, the only choice was an everything bagel, that's all they had left, the French Toast Soufflé or I should say, what was left of it, was stuck to the bottom and we were told, more was coming out, but instead it was replaced with just regular French toast that was very bland, the scrambled eggs were cold, have to say the omelette station was the only saving grace along with fresh pancakes, the only muffins were banana nut cut up into pieces, desserts were just about gone, so for a little less than $40.00 per person, a diner would have been a better choice for sure. My family went to dinner here last night after unsuccessful attempts to make reservations elsewhere. We are on vacation this week with our entire extended family and wanted one night to be together for the first time in 2yrs. The experience at Aleatheas ruined our gathering. Our server Gina started off well but quickly lost sight of us as a customer. We asked for a group photo at the beginning which she was happy to do however only on her terms. I wanted a picture near the windows but was actually told "no" that she would take it the way she wanted to take it because she has other tables and this was all we were getting so instead of a picture of my family, I have a picture of our table as if we are strangers at a wedding. I couldn't believe she spoke to me in that manner. Then when she came to take our order, I indicated that we wanted to order appetizers, well she wanted to take our dinner order as well but I said we weren't ready. Too bad for us because she was taking the whole order anyway. I had ordered a Mai Tai and what came from the bar was this brown watery rum beverage that was awful. We also ordered wine and she asked when we wanted it and we said with the appetizers. She brought out glasses but no wine. It finally appeared after dinner was served. Let's talk about the dinner. Several of us ordered steak. The runner came out with the first plate of a medium steak. No one ordered medium. We stated that and he told us that his paper said we did. He kept circling the table trying to get us to take it. We sent it back saying it should be mid-rare. After all the plates were served, he came back out with that same plate but now calling it mid-rare. We cut into it proving it wasn't. He called Gina back and she actually picked up my sons fork and stabbed the meat and said "well this piece looks mid-rare" arguing with us again. Was he supposed to eat it after she did that? Also the lamb special was overcooked and that was sent back as well. She started avoiding our table after that. I went out to the front to find a manager. The hostess said there "really isn't one" and stuck her head behind the hostess stand and a man in a tee shirt (Tai) came out and said (said, not asked) "is there a problem" I began explaining as he stood there expressionless. No words of apology or explanation. He said nothing at all, just looked at me disinterested. I finally said to him, "you have nothing to say do you?" and he said no. He then said that they remade the meals and what else did we expect? Again, no apology, no empathy, no change of expression so I walked away. Needless to say, our dinner mood was ruined. I can honestly say we were willing to forget about the early issues so that we could enjoy our family but the hits just kept coming.. Afterward I walked to the hotel lobby to ask if the restaurant was under separate ownership. The two ladies at the front said it was owned by the same family so I asked for an owner. They looked at each other and with confusion. Then the one asked if she could help with something so I told my story. Laura & Kate were very engaged in listening, they were empathetic, and offered sincere apologies. They said that the only "manager" was Tai, the person I already experienced. Laura then asked if they at least took off the price of the one dinner and my horrible drink but nothing was done which surprised both the ladies. She asked for my name and phone number and said she would try to do something. I have no hope of hearing from anyone as the "management" clearly does not care. Dined at Aleathea's this past weekend with my family. We were a large party (including 3 kids) so we were happy to be accommodated there. We were seated, and the woman at the front desk was extremely rude. She came over to me and started moving my stroller without asking. Whatever. The food? Meh. We ordered the sweet potato chips, they were soggy and on a lake of blue cheese. I ordered a burger, cooked medium - it was well done. My sister in law ordered an "ahi tuna" sandwich...it came out completely white, way over cooked. Gross. One positive thing is that they have a nice vegan selection. Our server was nice, but very inattentive. Sure, the kids (3 years old and 3 months old) got a tiny bit noisy, but we didn't deserve the daggers from the hostess. The rolls were delicious - had olives in the rolls served with good quality olive oil and wonderful roasted garlic. So delicious. We had two delicious salads - one house salad with a champagne dressing and a spinach salad with beets, walnuts, goat cheese, and other good toppings. For entrees we had the special roasted chicken - good free range tasty chicken in a Cabernet gravy. The other food we had was the ahi tuna appetizer - I had this as my entree and it was a great amount. Good sesame crusted tuna - delightful presentation - with a refreshing seaweed salad in the center and a generous amount of fresh ginger under the salad. Even thought New Jersey is not considered to be New England, stepping into Aleathea's was like stepping into a dining establishment on the coast of England in the early 20th century (I imagine of course, having never visited early 20th century England). We called ahead with a group of nine and they not only accommodated us, but told us they would keep the kitchen open for us. There are several seating areas including an outdoor deck that had some live, acoustic music, an indoor area that was somewhere between a covered porch and beach shack feel that included a bar area, and finally, a formal dining room with carpet, chandeliers, and white table linens. Even with a group of our size, we were waited on quickly and the food was fresh and came in a timely manner. I ordered the crab-avocado salad which was wonderful. Aleathea's is listed as $$ but is on the upper border. If you come for just a salad or burger and beer, your bill might be $20, but most main course entrées were close to $30 on their own. Overall, great service, setting, staff, and food. It is appropriate for both a mid-range priced burger outside, or a more upscale dinner indoors. read more

Menu that was posted outside had tuna poke but was not available for lunch.--the chips that were served were stale for the avocado dip. Tuna sandwich was a big piece of meat and had good flavor. The oysters had a slight odor to them but overall good but we had to request cocktail sauce. They had a happy hour special listed on the menu for cocktails that said it was two dollars off but when the receipt was provided she told me the discount only applies if you were in the bar. Made no sense since it was on the menu she ha fed me. Only--$2----but was more of the principle of it. Below average service. We stayed in Cape May to celebrate the end of summer and this was the worst meal we had all week long. We had forgotten to make reservations for one evening and after trying 3 other restaurants, all with an hour or longer wait, we found this place. There's a reason this restaurant had tables available while others were all booked. I do want to point out our waitress was very nice. I wish I'd caught her name. About 5'5" with brown hair in her 40's. Very nice. So, this restaurant comes across as more "upscale" than many others with their fancy linen tablecloths. Dont let that fool you. The hostess doesn't know how to smile of be welcoming at all. Some older cranky-pants woman. Then we were seated in the "porch" area where there are 4 tables all different like they bought them at a garage sale. If you're going for a casual, shabby Chic vibe, that's great, but don't line up 4 mis-matched tables when you're pretending to be upscale. It just looks cheap. Onto the food. The calamari and the coconut battered shrimp are both deep fried that they buy frozen. The cocktail sauce and chili sauce are both from a can. The dressing on the Caesar salad is fresh and flavorful, but the salad was overdressed and limp. We ordered the flounder sandwiches. Or was it grouper. I forget and I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference anyway. Just terrible. Again, deep fried from frozen. Overcooked and dried out with bland breading. Awful. I've had way better food in a bar drinking a pint of Guinness, but I was in a cloth napkin restaurant just feet from the Atlantic Ocean. Shameful. They pretend to be a good restaurant, but this is not the case. I advise you to avoid Aleathea's because there are many other options in Cape May and the surrounding area! read more

In this time where eating out is limited to outdoor only and the summer crowds mean a longer wait, takeout is our new norm. Take out is hard. Not everything survives crating in Styrofoam and a car ride home. Often we get cold, soggy or overcooked food. Here is the answer! We got the Tuna Poke bowls. Wow. We had had it before in the restaurant, but it was every bit as good in take out. Our daughter got the pan seared scallops. They we're perfect. Been coming down here for years and there's so many great places but finally made it here for breakfast on a September Friday. We sat on the outside patio with perfect weather. Fresh Squeezed OJ! But on vacation ...I saw a fund raiser adult beverage called Crush COVID - yummy. Ordered a California omelette which was nice except the avocado was unripe and turned to plastic in the omelette-easily removed but it should not have been submitted to a guest in the first place. ( we understand the restaurant supply chain issues so just come out and say the order came in sub par and make the rest of the omelette) I really like omelettes which aren't browned on the outside so this one was perfect otherwise. I had a lot of the nice tater tots on the side too. Hubby enjoyed a beautiful eggs Benedict and I doubt that flavorful hollandaise came from a box! I had to keep dipping my tots in some of his hollandaise lol. We will come back for dinner some time. One other note- the service was great I saw the help wanted sign but breakfast came out within 10 minutes of ordering and hubby's coffee was filled regularly like it was precovid! We used our Happy Cow app to find vegan breakfasts in the area. When we walked in, it was packed. We had to wait to be seated (which to me, is a good sign). The hostess was very nice. The server was great, too. Hubby and I got the "tofu scramble" with veggies. I got it on an English muffin. Hubby got it on a bagel. The food arrived and it was basically two triangular wedges of tofu with veggies on the muffin. It came with potatoes. I didn't know what to expect. But, honestly, it was great! The tofu was cooked and seasoned perfectly. The potatoes were excellent! Update: when the server was taking our card to pay, she said, "Come back... Next time you want tofu." Then rolled her eyes. We made reservations for their Mother's day brunch. We had to pay in advance but the menu and description sounded wonderful and we couldn't wait to celebrate. At $60 a person we were expecting a top-notch buffet with homemade baked goods, fresh fruit and hot food stations. What we got was a cheap motel 6 buffet, I wouldn't have paid $10 a person for. The "carving station" was a tray of pre-sliced ham and turkey under a heat lamp without a knife in sight. You could enjoy cold quiche and pre- packaged baked goods. I didn't see any fresh fruit except for the garnish on my mimosa. My personal favorite was the omelet station that was decorated with fresh herbs. Unfortunately, they were still wrapped in the supermarket packaging and the table was sprinkled with potting soil where they'd been knocked over and no one had bothered to clean up. I'll have a cheese omelet with a side order of dirt... no thank you. I could go on, but you get the point. Honestly, the only good thing I can say was that the servers were very pleasant. They probably felt bad for all of us moms who'd been scammed out of $60. I would never go back here and honestly they should be embarrassed to charge anyone for this "experience". read more

The food here is phenomenal. I never order shrimp scampi. I had a craving for it, and came across this restaurant online. While my boyfriend and I were waiting for our table, we grabbed a drink at the bar. Bartenders were professional, laid back, hospitable, and friendly. Not to mention, stools are extremely comfortable. The shrimp was very clean, and fresh. Pasta was cooked Nicely. The large Caesar salad was perfectly dressed. I loved that they provide shaved Parmesan cheese, and roasted garlic with the bread. The bread arrived perfectly warm. I do not always ask for the names of our servers but I needed to ask the names of two individuals that worked here. Melissa, and Bernie were phenomenal. They had a wedding, and a show event at the venue (extremely busy), and we still had remarkable service. Cons: We did order the mussels and needed to send them back. They were overly fishy. The way the restaurant serves the mussels is by separating the shells. Personally, I like to see the way they open for myself to identify if the mussel is "a good one." Aleathea's is a restaurant attached to the Cape May Inn. It is in a huge Victorian house with a big sweeping porch. The menu didn't seem overwhelming when I looked at it online and it was not a BYOB, but the family wanted to try and I am glad we did. There was some activity on the patio and lawn as we walked into the restaurant. An acoustic guitar band was playing while people sat in chairs and rockers on the porch and listened. The restaurant inside looked to be 2 enclosed rooms. A porch and another inside the building. We sat on the enclosed porch which was perfectly fine. The waitress was very friendly and answered any question about the menu. Despite looking at in online, I still wasn't sure what I was getting. I saw a lot of entrées come out which steered me. I started with the beef carpaccio app which was spot on. Nice portion, topped with some greens. Delicious. My wife tried one of the soups of the day and loved it. We both got salads. I love Caesar salad but it seems there is never anchovies on them any more. I asked the waitress about their salad and she said no problem. They threw a nice amount of anchovies on top and it was great. My wife got the Spinach Salad which was great as well. I was unsure of my entrée. I wasn't feeling steak or pasta and I'm not a fan of Grouper fish and such. I was thinking scallops, but I saw some entrées come out and it looked like 6-7 scallops with some mashed potatoes and asparagus. I did not have this and it could be outstanding, I was just looking for more. I went with the Salmon over risotto and it was the right choice. Glazed salmon was done perfect on top of a bed of spinach and risotto. My wife got the Shrimp scampi with pasta (you can also get it over risotto) and loved it. Aleathea's has a nice children's menu. My son got Mozzarella sticks and chicken. We passed on dessert since ice cream shops galore are 2 blocks away at Washington Square. In the end, the bill ($140 with tip) was beyond reasonable for the meal we had with some drinks. There was still a ton of activity on the porch as we left by both families and couples. I think they'd benefit from a smaller menu, with freshness as the priority. My salad was perfect and our entrees were made with a bit less love. That being said, I would give them another shot opting for outside dining, and maybe a burger. They might want to embrace some change and celebrate their strong suits. read more

I absolutely love this little gem. Granted, this review is for the patio and bar/food service area, and I've never sat in the dining room. But, why sit inside when you can enjoy the beautiful outdoor patio and overlook the beach?? The bartenders are some of the nicest people I've encountered in Cape May. I've always been greeted with a warm smile and friendly conversation. This weekend I walked three miles up the beach from the Point with my Pitbull, Mr Sir. We were hoping to stop for a drink at Congress Hall (also dog friendly) but their outdoor bar was closed so we kept walking to the Inn at Cape May to eat here. We sat on the patio and ordered wine and a margarita pizza. Both were delicious! My dog was served water in a crystal bowl (oh, Cape May!) and we sat outside. The woman who was serving us (tan with blonde hair) was so friendly and she loved my pup and treated us both with such warmth and kindness. Came here with the wife last weekend. Had a great time drinking Coronas on the patio and watching the ocean goers walk around. We had dinner here too and the food is surprising delicious. We had this amazing spicy seafood soup I can't remember the name of. But it was amazing. The hot bread comes with fresh roasted garlic cloves to smash and spread on your bread. Forget butter this was an amazing idea. My main was the sirloin burger topped with poached lobster. Let me tell you they do not skimp on the lobster. I must've had at least three claws plus body meat on top of my burger. Check out my picture you can barely see my burger! Every bite was heavenly. The wife had the fish tacos which were perfectly spiced and delicious. I would drive all the way down there just to eat here again. The service too was fantastic; friendly and timely. As an appetizer, we had mussels, an avocado and crab salad, and baked brie. The brie was the best dish of the night while the others were just okay. A charming Victorian restaurant with a very pleasing ambience. I took Lenny Y.'s advice and ordered the Dr Loosen Dr L Riesling - it was wonderful. The rolls came with a dipping oil and garlic. The oysters on the half shell were very light. The chicken francaise was topped with the best crab meat I have ever had. We usually come her at least once a visit as we always have the dogs and Aleathea's is very dog-friendly. We typically will get one of the seafood dishes as they are always fresh and well prepared. I particularly like the crab cakes as there is very little filler and they are quite large. All dinners come with fresh baked bread and salad so for the price you always leave full. Pretty good selection of beer although the wine list could be better. Drinks are priced reasonably and I like to stop in and sit at the bar for a cold beer during the day. read more

This evening, I went there to eat with my parents for the early bird special and We are all home now belching and bellyaching and out $100 to boot. Terrible food selection and haphazardly thrown together. The food was the worst part. The olive oil dipping sauce was more dried herbs and salt than olive oil. As for appetizers, my baked brie was barely warm, my father's clams were massive, chewy, and swimming in a tart red sauce that looked more like tomato paste, and my mother's sweet potato chips had blue cheese dressing that looked like it was poured straight from a Ken's dressing bottle. Quite possibly the best meal I've had in ages. We started with coconut shrimp. They were light and succulent, with a sweet chili dipping sauce that contained the right balance of sweet & chili heat. I nearly fell off my chair, it was that good. Every course that followed, the crab rangoon flat bread, the crabmeat poutine, and chicken marsala were just fantastic! I may be in love with this place. The manager and waitress were attentive without being intrusive & conducted enough light banter to make us feel welcome. Nasty to us for being 20 min late for a 7:45 reservation and with attitude saying she gave our table away that they were very busy and we have to wait 20 minutes, yet half the restaurant was empty. The food is usually pretty good, we come every year but not sure what happened to this place? The coconut shrimp had no coconut in the batter, should have been just called fried shrimp. My risotto was a mushy pasty lump that was not eatable but the shrimp and scallops were ok. Hubby had Tuna which he said was good but the sides weren't. I called to make a reservation this year as I have been enjoying their Vegan options over the last few years, to my extreme disappointment they removed them from their menu this year. Terrible decision, to alienate customers who care about animals and their health is not smart. Many people I know will not be going their anymore, take a tip and learn from the Mad Batter and many other restaurants in Cape May who understand the market. read more

We had an outstanding dinner here while in Cape May!! The scallops were to die for! Can't wait to go back!
