I was looking forward to stopping by Port Marina during my Cape May visit for a waterfront meal. According to the posted hours online, the restaurant appeared to be open, but when I arrived I was informed they were closed and that the online hours had not been updated. I rarely leave one-star reviews, but I feel compelled to share our experience. Months in advance, I planned a girls' beach day in Cape May for a group of 14 friends. Back in May, I called this restaurant to ask about making a reservation for our party. I was told they do not accept reservations for the outdoor seating area, which was exactly where we wanted to dine after spending the day at the beach. We arrived around 5:30 p.m. and added our names to the waitlist. We understood that a party of 14 might require a longer wait. However, after watching group after group be seated ahead of us, we repeatedly told the hosts that we did not need to sit together. We were more than willing to split into smaller groups and take the first available tables. Despite making that clear several times, we continued to wait. During the hour and twenty minutes we stood there, we watched numerous parties of varying sizes get seated before us. Since the outdoor area doesn't accept reservations, there didn't appear to be an obvious reason why our group couldn't have been accommodated in smaller tables throughout the restaurant. No one ever proactively updated us on our wait. Every update came because someone from our group approached the host stand to ask. Finally, around 6:50 p.m., we were seated--not at regular dining tables--but on couches with coffee tables tucked away in the back. The only bright spot of the evening was our waitress. She was kind, attentive, and did an excellent job taking care of us. She deserved much better than the situation she inherited. What made this experience so painful wasn't simply the wait--it was how invisible and unimportant we were made to feel. No manager came over to apologize for the excessive delay, acknowledge our flexibility in splitting up, or explain why we couldn't have been seated much sooner. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but after everything we experienced, it was difficult not to feel that the color of our skin played a role in how we were treated. As the host of this outing, I was embarrassed that I had chosen this restaurant to end what had otherwise been a beautiful day with friends. I truly hope the restaurant reflects on how guests are treated. Every customer deserves to feel welcomed, respected, and valued regardless of race. read more

We went back to the Port this summer after how good it was last summer. And they changed the menu. We absolutely loved the Brussels sprouts and they are no longer on the menu. They were out of the spring rolls that I really wanted to try. The whipped feta was good, I would get this again. I liked the grilled chicken sandwich but I think $22 is a bit expensive for a chicken sandwich. The grilled corn and avocado salad was okay. I think the dressing needed more flavor to it, it was dull. My sisters said the first tacos were good but better last year. My dad got a chowder and he did really like it. My dad also got the flounder sandwich and it wasn't good! The tap water literally tasted rusty, they shouldn't serve it to anyone. I had a big group so we did have a wait. So be prepared to wait. We got drinks and apps at the bar while we waited. I would go back because the vibes are good. The dj was good. But I might eat before I go. read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Cape May. I love the ambiance of the outdoor seating area. They have a nice cocktail menu and wine selection. On my most recent visit I tried the sangria, and it was delicious. The oysters were very good, as was the tomato and peach salad. I had the rainbow roll, which was good but I think I would try another type of sushi next time. The best part of the meal was the crab and lobster chowder. It was so good the notes I took just said "soup wow!" There are so many more dishes on this menu that I hope to try on my next visit! read more

The vibes were good and for the first 5 minutes were enjoyable but it all went downhill from there. They seated the us in the wrong spot multiple times and took 20 minutes of waiting before we had a table settled. The staff was split half and half some nice some terrible. By time we got our food they got multiple orders wrong and then made slick comments when handing our new correct food back to us. The place also has no air conditioning or fans outside at all. We have been outside for drinks. Love the vibe. We have eaten upstairs multiple times. Our server, somehow, is always Lauren and we are always at the same two tables. No complaints there! Lauren is attentive and friendly and everything you'd want in a server for a fun night out. We love the cocktails, the sushi, the lobster ravioli with the edamame whip- so, so good! We've been on date nights, with friends, and with our daughters for sushi night. Always leave happy, full, and excited to go again. The desserts are delicious. Is it cheap? Nope- but it's worth it and it's lovely. You can't beat the views! If you're local, sushi night Mondays in the off season are clutch! For having such an amazing experience the first time, we had a pretty awful experience the second visit only a few weeks later. I learned that you should come to Port Marina for lunch or when it is not as busy. We knew there would be a long wait and didn't even mind the 90 minutes since my husband and I planned to sit and enjoy being outside with a cocktail. Unfortunately when we finally sat, the food portions were significantly smaller than our previous visit, the service was extremely slow and the restaurant seemed dirty. There was unfortunately fecal matter all over the floor of the bathroom. When I reported this to the staff, it still hadn't been cleaned after 30 minutes when I returned. We sat outside and got a nice seat by the water. Sometimes when you dine with a toddler, restaurants will put you in a back corner tucked away, but that wasn't the case here. Ordered wine and my husband had a cocktail. Drinks were delicious. We ordered their crab cakes as an appetizer, they were good, even my toddler loved them. Husband ordered fish & chips and i ordered a lobster roll. Everything was good. Our waiter was attentive. I took off 2 stars because the outdoor bathrooms were absolutely disgusting. There was tissue paper all over the stall floors. The trash bin was overflowing and there was no soap. No soap!! I'm not sure of the bathroom conditions for those dining inside but this is unacceptable. I hope the workers have soap wherever they use the bathroom. Management, please, make this a priority! More effort should be made to clean the bathrooms and replenish soap and tissue paper. Thankfully, this was after we had already dined and I was grateful I had hand sanitizer in my car. read more

We had a very strange experience here. Half of which isn't their fault. I was SO excited to come here. We actually specifically scheduled this day of the trip around their opening for the afternoon. We go in and notice that there isn't really anyone sitting inside. While the outside was beautiful it was very cold and windy. We asked if anything inside was available and it was only the bar. I order too much food to be cramped up at a bar so outside we went. No big deal we had jackets. We were sat next to a speaker that was blaring house music. It was like 12pm noon. While this might make sense in the summer, but this was end of October, it was truly obnoxious. There were only like 3-4 other customers there. We couldn't hear ourselves at our table and asked to move or for them to turn it down. I mean y'all, it was insanely loud. Even the next table we moved to was still really loud. Then we get to ordering, our server was so sweet and I feel bad that everything here just kind of sucked that day. I placed my order, she comes back to say they are out of something I ordered, no big deal cancel it. Then my sushi gets brought out, we had a whole convo about how I'm Gluten Free, everything seemed fine. Then my sushi comes out with regular soy sauce (which is not safe for me) spilled all over it. Honestly, I've never received sushi with the soy sauce on the same plate. I waited and waited for her to come back so I could ask for a new set of rolls. We hadn't received any other food or drinks at this point. All good, it's being prepped. My husband had a soda and I had a hot tea while we waited.. Well, next thing we know, a fire alarm starts going off. Then they are coming out to let us know that we all need to go around front, wait for the fire department, etc. We handed her enough cash to cover the drinks and just said to cancel the order and left. Maybe we just caught them at a bad time but it was almost like we weren't supposed to eat here. I'm not sure we'll come back because it was just all so hectic from having folks outside freezing, to the super loud music with no one there, to the lack of GF understanding (or listening), etc. By this time it was like an hour and a half after we got there so we went back to our side of the Cape and had a great large lunch elsewhere. read more

We were in Cape May this past weekend visiting friends and we were looking for a place to get drinks and some appetizers before going back to their beach house for dinner. The winery was having a wedding so that didn't work out - we drove to the relatively new Port Marina and were surprised by the many cars in the large parking area and were concerned we might not be able to get a table. To our surprise, we were seated immediately and discovered they have A LOT of seating from a front deck area with high tops, to tables along the covered bar area, to tables and couch arrangement on the open air back deck. Many options for places to sit and we were so glad we chose the couches which also had a lovely view of the water and were protected by a glass from the wind which was picking up. It was also not very loud on the back deck (the bar area was definitely much louder with the music). The mocktail (strawberry basil sangria) was delicious and the other drinks were also very good. We enjoyed the: Local sea scallops - 4/5, large fresh scallops, the corn puree was just okay Ceviche - 5/5, we weren't sure what kind of fish but it was very fresh and came with tortilla chips (could have used a few more to scoop up the remnants) Port french fries - 4/5, solid thin cut fries, the dijon aioli was just okay Caterpillar roll - 5/5, excellent sushi with 8 pieces We'll definitely had back to Port Marina the next time we're looking for a nice place to eat outdoors for lunch or for appetizers in Cape May. read more
