We made a day trip to Cape May during our two weeks in Atlantic City in June. I researched gluten free options for lunch and immediately bookmarked the $33 GF Crab and shrimp cake entree at Lucky Bones. The restaurant is in a super busy area, and easy to miss but has a parking lot accessible from one direction only based on traffic. It wasn't packed inside at lunch, since we arrived after 2pm. Dispensing with beverages and appetizers, we ordered our entrees right away. Husband chose the boat ramp tacos with blackened fish ($2 upcharge for blackened). On flour tortillas, there were three nice fish tacos with a little lettuce and tomato topped with a spicy drizzle of Baja sauce. Chips (thick and crunchy) and a green salsa rounded out the plate. He was happy! Although I knew I wanted to try the gluten-free shrimp and crab cakes entree, I found out at lunch time they do not have the herbed polenta mentioned on the menu. I discussed my various side options with the server, and decided on the mashed sweet potato instead and the seasonal veggies were green beans, a favorite. This was a stellar entree and very healthy to boot. I didn't care for the bland yellow pepper aoli that came with this dish. The crab and shrimp cakes had a nice texture, and were much better after I got some zingy red cocktail sauce to go with them! Very pleased with my dish. We paid our bill and got back on the road quickly, but wanted to memorialize the occasion with a positive review. Definitely worth coming back for another meal here! read more

The entrees have everything from seafood to pasta to sandwiches and everything in between. They do multiple daily app and entree specials as well, so always something new to try! Some of my favs for apps are the nachos (great for a big group!), fried zucchini, and bacon wrapped shrimp. For entrees, the shrimp and crab cakes, chicken bruschetta, Scottish salmon, and mussels are delish! Their polenta is my favorite side and maybe my favorite polenta I've ever had! This came up on a list of good options for early dinner with a baby as it's large and loud enough where a crying baby won't ruin the ambience. The only anti-baby downside was the lack of changing table but perhaps there was a family room that i did not try too hard to find. The service was quick and nice. I really enjoyed my shrimp and crab cakes which was more shrimp than crab with polenta and green beans. My husband liked his fish and chips. We searched comprehensively for a special dinner experience for our last night in Cape May, and initially we were taken aback because we could not get a reservation before 7pm on a pre-season Tuesday in May. So we went early (no problem being seated around 5:30 or so, but it did seem full an hour later) and were we ever rewarded. Everything was simply perfect, including Vicki, our veteran and down to earth waiter. When we are unsure of things, she provided expert guidance with kindness and wisdom. The mussels appetizer are an experience not to be missed - save the bread for lapping up its saucy juice. My wife loved the pork chop - its huge and she took half home for lunch. We ate here for lunch after my son's bootcamp graduation. We had a big party, 10 of us. The waitress was good and on top of it considering how busy the restaurant was. I got the carnitas tacos and they were excellent! So tender and delicious. My husband got a grilled chicken sandwich, I had a couple of bites and it was good. They comped my son and his friends meals which I thought was so nice (they both had just graduated Coast Guard bootcamp and were in uniform). There were a lot of options on the menu to choose from. Solid spot for dinner. We went on a Sunday evening around 5 and it was about half full. We sat at the bar. I got the gluten free Scottish salmon and my whole entree was delicious. My husband got the regular fish and chips and he enjoyed it but the fish inside the breaded could have used some seasoning. We loved our bartender. Service was the highlight of this meal. Scallops wrapped in bacon were delicious but the beet cream sauce didn't taste like anything. The BBQ shrimp wrapped in bacon had too much sauce on it - you couldn't taste the horseradish that was stuffed inside the shrimp at all. The beets in the salad were bland they needed some salt/acid - dressing was good. My husband enjoyed his seafood pasta dish. He said the cheesecake was delicious (made locally by another store). We had a great experience at Lucky Bones Backwater Grill. The service was incredible--everyone was genuinely friendly and made us feel welcome from the moment we sat down. I had the turkey dinner, and it honestly felt like Thanksgiving in April. The gravy was delicious, and the turkey was cooked perfectly. It was one of those meals that just hits right. We were there later in the evening, but you wouldn't have known it. The staff treated us like we were their first customers of the day, which really stood out. Visiting Cape May for the first time, it's so easy to fall into tourist traps and go to over commercialized restaurants. I'm so glad I did my research and found Lucky Bones, because this was one of the best outcomes for a spontaneous dining experience we could have had. Situated on the main road as you're entering Cape May, Lucky Bones has some amazing seafood options for an affordable price. Their regular menu is plentiful, and they also have an extensive specials menu (that our amazing server, Taylor, was able to recite off memory. How incredible is it she was able to remember 10+ items and explain each one!!) The standout of our meal was the lobster bisque, which my family cannot stop raving about. While many restaurants skimp on the seafood, this place does the complete opposite. We were so surprised at how much lobster meat was actually in their soup, and can say that that a large bowl of it would even be sufficient as a meal. This was definitely one of the top lobster bisques we've had. One member of our party has a blue cheese allergy, so we made this known to our waitress Taylor when ordering the mussels appetizer (which typically comes with Gorgonzola.) She was detailed in explaining to us that the cheese is next to the shellfish in the kitchen, thoughtful in ensuring that there would not be any cross contamination and went above and beyond for us. Skilled waiters and waitresses like herself are such an asset, especially with there being a gluten sensitive menu, I wouldn't have any concerns dining here with an allergy. Every dish we ordered was delicious, and we left happy, full, and already planning our next visit. Did we mention they didn't skimp on the seafood at all? I have been coming here for many years! This is one of the most consistent food places in the area. My favorite is the rocket salad, but I also frequently get their linguine and clams! The staff is very try knowledgeable and I feel safe coming here with an allergy (GF friendly too!) They have a dining area and a bar area. Both can get a little loud when busy, so I usually prefer a booth when it's crowded to help drown out some of the other noise. They have a great tap menu for any beer lovers. For my GF friends, they give you a special orange menu and orange napkin that designated you are GF. My wife has a severe allergy to all nuts and shellfish among other items, and our server was super communicative with the kitchen and managerial staff and made sure that she was able to enjoy a safe meal. Even among allergy-friendly places that "get it," few in our experience have taken it as seriously as Lucky Bones with clear and specific language throughout the menu, color-coded plates for the safe meals, and super personable and accommodating service. First time at Lucky Bones. Always hard not to turn left and go to the lobster house but this time we wanted to try Lucky bones. Had a 6:30pm reservation for the dining room, but for some reason, even though there were some open tables, they sat us in the bar. We let it go and figured it would be an interesting atmosphere. After about 15 minutes of being seated and still waiting for somebody to come by and say hello, I believe the supervisor of the waitresses came by and said she was going to help out. Terry was very nice, attentive, and professional. it was very nice of her to step in when she saw there was an issue. Lots of interesting cocktails and all were at very reasonable prices. The bourbon honey was a huge hit with my wife. Complementary "fresh baked" focaccia bread with dipping sauce, starts you off. Unfortunately, our "fresh baked" came out of the refrigerator and not the oven because it was cold in the middle and barely warm on the top. It was still good though. Directly out of the oven would've been fantastic. Lots of specials, and I had the scallops wrapped and bacon to start which were accompanied by homemade horseradish beet sauce. The scouts were OK, the bacon was exceptional, and I really really couldn't taste the horseradish in the beet sauce. I probably wouldn't order them again. For our entrées, my wife had the margarita pizza which she enjoyed and took most home. She was not a huge fan of the marinara, but she said overall the pizza was pretty good. Lots of basil, but not much mozzarella on it in my opinion. I had the fried oyster platter, which was excellent. The oysters were plump and perfectly cooked and the accompany.
