Before checking out Lighthouses we had to travel back in time to what it was like during the time period they were built. What better Time Machine than the Cold Spring Brewery at the edge of Historic Cold Spring Village. Our excellent bartender was kind and very knowledgeable about the beers. We had these following; my flight was the Dennisville Inn Porter a 5.6 abv, Eli Foster's Fruited Ale 5.0 abv, Cold Spring Pumkin Feative Ale 6.0 abv and the NA version. My spouse had the Not Ye Grandpappy's Sarsaparilla 3.8 abv and a N/A was also available. Very pleasant, calm , relaxed and comfortable place to drink beer. I'm not necessarily a big fan of pumpkin beer but they did something I got a kick out of of . The rim of the glass had a margarita style coating with pumpkin spice and sugar. It worked. read more

CAPE MAY: Historic Cold Spring Village is an outdoor living history museum which is open seasonally and is pet friendly, but happened to be closed when we visited in late September. The village reopens on June 15, 2024. Luckily on the property, and opened year-round, is Cold Spring Brewery, one of the most unique breweries we have ever been to! Located inside a restored beautiful barn is a tasting room full of so much character, great beer, and a friendly atmosphere. It is NJ's only non-profit brewery that helps support the village to preserve history. The awesome beertender, Bill, made some great tasting suggestions and we had a fun time drinking the Hildreth German Wheat, Cold Spring Red, Cape May Farmhouse, and Pumpkin Festival Ale. There are 15 varieties on tap including non-alcoholic options. Most importantly, leashed dogs are allowed inside and there is also a great outdoor space with firepits and peaceful views. Stopped in on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in March with my girlfriend while on a whirlwind tour of breweries in the Cape May area. It has the distinction of being the first (and only?) non-profit microbrewery in NJ. It's located in the Historic Cold Spring Village, a living history museum, and all proceeds from the brewery benefit the museum. As a major history lover, this for me is reason enough to visit. The brewery is in a beautifully restored 19th century barn. It is, hands down, one of the most beautiful taprooms I have ever been in, and I've been to just about every brewery in South Jersey. The man pouring beers was exceptionally friendly and helpful. My girlfriend and I sat with our beers on couches in front of a gas fireplace and a giant tv showing pictures of dogs (the place is dog friendly and allows dogs inside). It was extremely pleasant. Everything about this place is five stars, but I think the beer itself brings it down to four stars. We each had a flight, so we tried eight different beers between the two of us. Nothing really stood out to us. It was all decent but nothing extraordinary. In terms of beer alone it is nowhere near the top breweries in the state. Another random nitpicky thing is that all beers - pints and flights alike - are served in plastic cups. It's a shame to be in a beautiful rustic barn and to have to drink out of plastic cups like I'm at a frat party. read more

It's raining...or maybe it's sunny...and you're looking to do a brewery tour in Cape May County...feel confident skipping Cold Springs Brewery. I've been here three times now, and somehow the beer keeps getting worse. I'm not sure if it's the water quality or overall lack of attention to detail that keeps their beer low quality, but whatever it is, the beer is terrible. I gave them a pass during Covid, but the failures keep adding up. In addition to the taste of the beer, they continue to insist on serving everything in plastic cups. I'm sure that's more convenient for the bored, lazy, and overall disinterested staff, but every other brewery has returned to glassware, so telling customers that plastic is "...for the pandemic..." Is a lie. I want this place to succeed. Find someone willing to work hard from another local brewery and give them a chance. In the meantime, I'm going to CoHo, Cape May Brewery, or Slack Tide. read more

I have such mixed feelings about this brewery... on one hand, the atmosphere is great. They had a live band playing inside and the indoor space was beautiful. They also have a huge outdoor seating area with lots of picnic tables in both sunny and shady spots. However, the beer itself was really just okay. We started with a flight including a few IPAs - I really didn't care for the Hazy NEIPA, which is normally my favorite style. The Grog was alright and the Finley was pretty good - but they all seemed to lack the right about of carbonation. We got a few to-go cans of the Finley and when we opened it, it was basically flat. Hardly any bubbles and no foam...we tasted it and then dumped it. I did enjoy the German wheat taster and the farmhouse was also tasty. I'm just not sure if the lines need checked and this was a one off- or if this is consistent. Regardless, I would highly recommend for the atmosphere (5 stars) and feel ambivalent about the beer (3 stars) read more

Love the cause and I especially love the building that its located in. But in the grand scheme of things the beer could use a bit of work. Cold Springs Brewery is New Jersey's first non-profit brewery, raising funds for the Historic Cold Springs Village, a stretch of 27 restored vintage buildings from the 1800s that include a museum and plenty of yearly events. Funds from every beer that you drink go towards their events and preservation, so deep down it is a symbiotic relationship that I can respect. The brewery building is an English-style vintage barn from 1804, and almost every section of it is fully adorned with tools, weapons, artwork, and then some from the time period. It's definitely the perfect spot to start or finish the exploration of a historic village in and it definitely gives you plenty to look at. The beer on the other hand is what could use a bit of work, even if I appreciated the versatility of what they had to offer. It could be the sulfur or sediment that some people alluded to, or it could be that the tools that they use as a non-profit brewery could be a little more homebrew based (which isn't to say that there's anything wrong with that), or that the beers are served in plastic cups, but there was something that tasted a little off about more than one of the brews that I tried. Picking up an inexpensive pint or mason jar glass that you can use at the brewery before taking it home takes care of one of the problems and goes towards the cause. And despite some of the issues at hand, it was easy to appreciate the versatility of a brewery that served lagers, IPAs, saisons, porter, stouts, Irish reds, and then some. They even had a hard seltzer and sasparilla! read more

This is a cool brewery at Cold Sprint Village. The beer is all sold for non profit to support the museum and grounds of Cold Spring. The brewery is in a barn with plenty of seating and sells some small snacks if you need something to eat while drinking. There is a good selection of beers here and each beer we tried was good. They do not do full flights - only mini flights that are two beers in small cups. Cold Spring is a nice stop when in Cape May! read more

Cool atmosphere both inside and out. Live music is usually pretty good too. Don't expect much from the beers though. There are many better options in the area including Behr just down the road. The Red Ale is probably the best in my opinion but I find most of their beers to be flat and lacking quality. Favorite brewery hands down. So tired of the echoey concrete and block tap rooms where I can't hear myself think. I have tried hundreds of beers and these are pretty respectable all things considered. Don't go in expecting Uber-hopped west coast DIPA's or beers with all sorts of fruity additions. They are trying to be semi period correct. Was in Cape May four days last summer and came here three times - very relaxing environment. Perfect place to grab a growler before heading over to Beach Plum Farms for an outdoor lunch. Keep up the great work folks. My only complaint is I wish they stayed open later. I'd love to Uber over after dinner and sip one around the fire pit in an Adirondack lounger. Yes, they have both of those, another plus. read more

Cold Spring Brewery is super cute in a historical way. Expect to feel like you're transporting back in time when you walk inside. Lots of wood accents and what not. It's on the grounds of the Historic Cold Spring Village, so it makes sense. Admittedly Cold Spring was my third brewery visit in a row. My friend was driving (thanks, MK!) so I had a bit of a buzz going. To be fair, it was also my birthday weekend. It made sense to stop here because it was en-route to Cape May, which is where we were headed so she could take some scenic photos. I walked inside alone originally, as MK was busily snapping photos on the grounds. I didn't receive a super friendly welcome. They were busy and didn't seem like the kind of guys who enjoyed chit chat. I quickly ordered a flight, which came in little plastic cups [ugh, not very sustainable -- please get glass!]. When my friend walked in, she asked to try their flagship red (which I hadn't ordered), and they gave her a free sample the same size as one of my paid pours. I also later overheard the other guy behind the bar give a different party the whole brewery schpeel, which I would have also appreciated hearing firsthand. I like learning about the background of breweries and I know this one is fairly new. Oh well; maybe another time. The beers I tried were only okay. Nothing wowed me in the slightest. I tried the Cresse wheat, German wheat, red (MK's pour because she didn't like it), pale ale, and farmstead pale. I rated the German wheat the highest, at 3.75 bottle caps via Untappd. Maybe there wasn't enough variation to excite me. They were all very standard and traditional, without much creativity. I'd like to see them branch out a bit more. I feel like they'd do well brewing a blueberry beer this summer. Or a strawberry wheat. That'd be fun. I think if I return it'll be on a day with fewer visitors. Perhaps in the fall. I bet the grounds will be extra pretty then. read more

The brewery has a great story - it got started brewing beer recipes from the era of the living history museum who's ground it sits on, but after realizing that beer didn't taste great, switched to more modern recipes. We did two mini-flights (they offer mini flights, half pints and pints) to start. Of the four we tried, the "not ye grandpappy's sasaparilla" was my favorite but BOY could this one be dangerous. It tasted like a homemade root beer with a kick at the end - absolutely delicious. The living history museum is open Thursday through Sunday, so we missed seeing that, but you can tell the folks who work at this brewery care deeply about preserving the history and educating customers. This is certainly a place worth a visit - for the vibes, the beer and the history. read more

If this review was simply based on charm, Cold Spring would get a five, hands-down. This quaint little brewery is located within the historical town of Cold Spring, where most things are no longer operational. Cold Spring Brewery reminded me of a bed and breakfast mixed with a local watering-hole. It was a hole by no means. The staff also exhibited this local charm. They were sweet and older than the typical 20-something's you'd find behind the bar. They were very polite, and I hate to use this word again- charming. They had about 7-8 options, which unfortunately were just so-so. The Dennisville Porter and Cape May Farmhouse Ale were my "favorites" however I've had better in both flavor styles. All and all, this brewery isn't worth its own trip to visit; however it's right on the bike trail and not too far from other establishments. If you feel like time traveling into another era, this is a perfect way to do it. Bonus that you can bring your pups inside, and they give away free chips and pretzels as bar snacks. read more

The NEIPA they describe as juicy and hazy literally tasted like someone ashed their cigarette in it and the Jamaican blonde ale tasted like nail polish remover. When I went up to confirm I had the correct beers, the beertender said "yeah I tasted that earlier, I thought more people would have come up but you're the first one to come up about it." Do what you will with this information. 2 stars for non-profit and ambience. read more

Great rustic setting with friendly, welcoming staff and beers that, with one exception, are good but not yet great. The seltzer was good, but I could detect a very faint hint of the sulfur that's found in the well water down in Cape May County. While I'm sure they have a water filtration system in place, even that little hint can affect the quality and character of beer. The sarsaparilla, I have to say, was really phenomenal. It's something for which I need to remember to bring my growler on my next visit. read more

There are a lot of existing reviews already on Yelp about how it's a beautiful ca. 1805 farmhouse, etc... All that is true. So, I won't repeat what is already said. However, I disagree with some of the other reviews and with the word on the street in Cape May County, that the beers are sub-par. I actually enjoyed the beers a lot upon my visit. Although the beer aficionados may find finer beer elsewhere, I really think that the beer that Cold Spring Brewery serves is appropriate for the venue. Their beers tend to be creamy, wheaty, and filling, but not very hoppy. The one thing that can be improved is the plastic cups. Finer beer tastes better in glasses. I understand that they may not have an industrial dishwasher yet. All the staff is extremely welcoming and friendly, too. I recommend to go on an offseason day, as I did, to avoid the big summer crowds. My pics that I took with the snow turned out nicer than I thought was possible with just my iPhone camera. read more

This was my favorite brewery around Cape May! What a delicious selection of beers and beautiful barn space. The atmosphere here is amazing and the place is located near a historical museum. There are restaurants in the historical village as well. I love that this brewery has an extensive outside space and a fire pit in the back. We played some outdoor games which were set up and cooled off drinking our beers in a beautiful air conditioned barn. The decorations were great and service friendly. Highly recommended. read more

I try and try and it's just terrible. After living in the area for 2 years, I wouldn't recommend this brewery for your craft brewery outing. They don't use any "historical" recipes as far as I can tell and the beer is quite bland. If you are near Cape May, try Cape May Brewing. If you are willing to drive a few miles North, SlackTide is ALWAYS trying out new beer recipes and their brews are delicious! (I do NOT work for these breweries- I'm just giving them a few props. Not something I usually do!) In all honesty, you really shouldn't waste your time here. They won't be in business for much longer, IMO. They don't know much about beer. (I'm sorry. I usually support local breweries but this place is not welcoming. The location is cool. I wish the beer was better.) read more

At the door, the most adorable little girl gave us a beer list and a self-guided tour pamphlet. Nice welcoming touch. The atmosphere is very relaxed and very family friendly. There is plenty of varied seating which include a long bench against a wall, table and chairs, and a ledge on the back wall with stools. There are no bar seats standing only, likely to avoid congestion. Also, very appreciated by the non smoker (me) they have a designated smoking area AWAY from the entrance and tasting room. They have a total of four beers at this time and I was able to try 3 out of the four. The German wheat had kicked however we were able to pick our favorite out of the three to fullfill our tasting. You can choose between a flight of 4 tasters for $6 or the $10 option which also includes a souvenir glass. While I didn't find a must have this every week beer I found the beers light and easy to drink. The American wheat was dangerously light and too easy to drink. The cold spring red was my personal favorite, while it was light it was slighty malty. The Porter was light for a porter and just a little smokey. See all lighter easy to drink beers. This brewery is under 10 minutes from the Cape May Brewery making an easy target for a little brewery crawl while at that end of the shore. Another option is to make a day of the Historic Cold Spring village equiped with a store for souvenirs and a restaurant. read more
