Yelp Mad Batter really impressed me. There we were, in Cape May on Thanksgiving Saturday looking for parking nearby. After finally finding a space, we walked up to Mad Batter, where there were already a number of people standing outside. We were a party of seven, so this wasn't looking good for us. Well, we had a Thanksgiving miracle. They had a table ready for us in less that ten minutes! The food and service here were both very good. I had the crab cake sandwich. It was very mild in flavor but still good. I recommend it, but I'll try some of their other offerings before I get it again. My sister-in-law had one of the specials, the Fried Tomato & Cracked Black Pepper Bacon Sandwich. She and my brother agreed that it was messy but delicious. The lobster mayo set it off nicely. Our server was really friendly and accommodating. She made sure we were taken well care of. We pointed out an error in the check, and she was very kind in taking care of it, and gave no attitude. I visited for brunch during my birthday trip to Cape May. The atmosphere is charming, and it's easy to see why it's popular. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the reputation for me. Nothing tasted bad, but nothing stood out either. The biggest surprise was the water, which had an unpleasant taste. The biggest disappointment was with a reservation issue. After my brunch, my reservation wasn't marked as attended or released in the system, which prevented me from making another reservation elsewhere for dinner. When I asked for help, Alfonso was dismissive and came across as unnecessarily rude instead of helping resolve what should have been a simple issue. It ended up affecting the rest of my evening. I wanted to like Mad Batter because I heard some good things about it. It's a cute house turned into an Alice in Wonderland themed restaurant. The staff was excellent and we ordered mimosas to drink. I was excited to try the clam chowder since it was free of all of my allergies. I then ordered the arugula and mozzarella salad with an addition of their lobster. The mimosas were excellent! The clam chowder was very good. But the salad was awful and the lobster was rubbery and overcooked. My wife's Chicken Margarita Flatbread had to be sent back for being undercooked, and even hot, it was unremarkable. I had the Fish and Chips. Though the fish itself was fine, the breading was nowhere near traditional...reminiscent of fish sticks from the grade school cafeteria. And the fries were soggy. The worse possible service ever! TO THE OWNER: Please remind all waitstaff to ask customers about any allergies before serving food, to ensure their safety and prevent any potential harm. I ordered the harvest salad with candied walnuts. I have no idea what candied walnuts are, so I wish the waiter asked if I had any allergies because they can SOMETIMES contain cinnamon in it and I am allergic to cinnamon. When the salad came out I started to eat the salad and noticed my throat starting to feel funny. I didn't mix the salad well so I just ate the arugula with the sauce and the chicken. Half way through I noticed there were walnuts and I took a bite of it and my throat immediately started to swell and I can feel my face and tongue getting itchy. Thank god I have my allergy medications on me, but what if the next person this happens to doesn't... We immediately told the server about my cinnamon allergy and the waiter looked at me like I was joking because I ate half of it and then asked me "So you're done with that?" and I said, "Yes I can't eat it anymore, I'm allergic to it and it's contaminated with everything else. I felt my throat starting to close up, but I am okay because I have my allergy medicine. " He asked if I wanted anything else and I said no just a hot tea to help with inflammation. I appreciate that the server was trying to help us out, but he still came back with the bill and said the owner is still going to charge me because it says candied walnuts on the menu, implying that it's my fault...I really expected this place to have better service, but looking at past reviews I can see how this place has overpriced underrated food and terrible service. They don't care about their customers and certainly just focused on making money. Hopefully after today they include that their candied walnuts have cinnamon in it! It's a juicy decent size burger on a brioche roll. The pickles are standout. Comes with what looks to be hand cut fries. I would love to try something else but when you know something is the best I tend to go w what I know. My wife gets different things this time she got some fluffy blueberry pancakes that looked right out of a magazine. So big I knew I was getting some. Only thing I can say is a little more syrup would have helped me. She had plenty and if I had asked our wonderful server Dillon I'm sure we would have gotten it. I can't believe I haven't reviewed before! This is our fave place in Cape May! Why? The food, the portion sizes, the staff. It all comes together in this beyond charming building. My husband and I visited The Mad Batter in Cape May based on a recommendation from a colleague, but unfortunately, it didn't live up to the expectations. We ate here this evening, the restaurant not too busy. Kelly, our server was pleasant, professional and attentive, but not overbearing. We sat on the enclosed porch/patio in the back behind the bar. It was quiet which we were looking for. My wife started with the clam chowder. It was more a soup than a chowder, but it was chock full of clams and some bacon too, and very tasty. I had the the cheesesteak egg rolls, nice and crispy. I liked how the cheese was in a dipping sauce. Very well done. For our entrees, my wife had the soy Glazed salmon, on a bed of fried rice. Clean plate club says it all. I had the Half-rack honey glazed St Louis Ribs. They were sweet and perfectly cooked, not fall of the bone, but melting in your mouth. It was served with fresh Cole slaw and macaroni and cheese, the cheese sauce velvety and quite delicious. We ate here several years ago, hence the return on this getaway. Had about a forty minute wait when we got there at 10am, which was before the real line formed. I suggest trying to go there as early as possible. Once we were in we could see why it was worth the wait. I ordered the French toast and I can honestly say I've never had better French toast in my life.
