There's a reason why they've been around for so long. They're one of the few bars remaining in Long Beach that opens at 6am, and it's surprising how many people you will see in there at that hour. Taco Tuesdays are where it's at, with deals all day and additional Happy Hour deals kicking in at 5pm. Old school drink prices and awesome food by Cocoreno's next door. It's clear the owners put a lot of thought and creativity into making their cocktails the centerpiece of the experience. That said, the execution didn't live up to the concept. The menu appears to rotate regularly, and while the drinks were certainly unique, most of the cocktails we tried were hit or miss. At roughly $22 per drink, I expected more balance and refinement. One cocktail started with flavors reminiscent of an Old Fashioned, but after the initial sip, the combination of bitters and fruit syrups created an unpleasant cough syrup like finish. We tried a mocktail as well, and it was mostly ice and soda water, with what seemed like a collection of syrups doing most of the heavy lifting. The drinks were creative, but many of the flavor profiles felt disjointed rather than intentional. The biggest issue, however, was the bar service and sanitation practices. I watched a bartender place a cucumber garnish into a glass using his bare hands, touching the entire garnish in the process. He then continued to take credit cards, cash, and other items before stuffing ice into additional drinks with his bare hands. Whether or not this technically violates health code standards, it certainly wasn't appetizing to watch and left a poor impression. Parking is another challenge. There is no dedicated parking, and unless you get lucky, expect to park several blocks away and walk. Overall, the atmosphere is a lot of fun and the cocktail menu is ambitious, but the drinks didn't justify the price point, and the sanitation concerns were hard to overlook. I wouldn't rush back, especially given the cost and parking difficulties.

Old school neighborhood bar. Two freshly re-felted pool tables for 50 cents. Free shuffleboard that is actually maintained. Very diverse crowds that range from long shore men to retirees to college kids to college dropouts. The last hour seems to be the busiest and seems quite popular with the food service industry. Last call is at 1:15 and they gradually get more aggressive to get you out the door by 1:30. It can be quite shocking being used to a two o clock kick out time. I have watched the Lakers, Dodgers and Blackhawks games here. The crowds are not overwhelming and the bartender will turn on just about any game you want. In the past year there have been quite a few changes with the tragic loss of Rocket, and Bob leaving. The new bartenders are friendly and help provide a stimulating, positive experience, and are accommodating. It is a cash only bar and the bartenders are sticklers for following the ABC laws, so be prepared. read more

You know, I just moved to the down town Long Beach area. Now, this is a total experience at times. I found this bar one night and went in for a beer or two. What I saw was so interesting, I kept coming back. I saw young people and older, getting along just fine. No arguments or asshole chicks who think their shit don't stink. The girls here were way cool. The crowd was mellow, partying hard and really cool. The man behind the bar was great. He looks like a football player or something. Drinks were reasonable, no assholes (like other bars on 4th Street) and really nice people. Even the older guy who was in the Marine Corp was way cool. I will go there again and take my friends. I now have found a bar. By the way, the drink I was drinking was a "Modified Guiness". A couple of these and you are doing just fine. read more

Women beware. Some female yelpers seem to have luck here but I've only encountered douche bag men and really rude staff. I've given it many shots since it's just around the corner from my place, but I've had enough nights ruined that I won't be going back. Too bad I still have the pleasure of experiencing street harassment from all the hick guys who stand outside when I walk to the restaurant across the street. The worst experience on St. Patricks Day. Bouncer, John or whatever his name was is extremely rude, woman beater and a poor excuse if a human being treated women with no regards. If you want to get into a fight, this is your spot. What ever happened to treat people with kindness? It's a place of business which should be shut down. We stopped in O'Connell's after some time away (like 4 months) due to illness and the brith of our first child. We came to find out that our favorite bartender was not there. The man who was working did nothing but bad mounth him and said he was nothng more than....well, that's another story. The big mouthed older man at the end of the bar (grey hair, chubby) said he was the owner and was quite rude, and yes, mean to most everyone. Without Bob, this place now sucks. My Mom and I celebrated St. Patrick's day here, and I went here every week for over a year for karaoke and many 49ers games. But what they did to me in the last two months is shameful and inexcusable. What riled me up is the owners decided to start using AI for their flyers and menus. I'm upset about it and wrote a review in response. I want to be clear about this, I'm putting the blame on THE OWNERS not the employees for this decision. They decided to make this decision and they were the ones who told an employee I greatly respect to ban me. Here's the kicker, a different employee told me "delete the reviews you wrote, or we'll ban you" so I did. I also offered to talk to the owners about this and also offered to pay someone to generate flyers and menus OUT OF MY OWN POCKET, but both offers were refused. I held up my end of the bargain and the owners didn't hold up their end of the bargain. The message has been clearly received, the owners are cheap, out of touch snakes. This is a minor point, but I told the managers here months ago to fix the men's toilet stall because the hinges are broken. I didn't get a chance to check tonight because of the banning, but the last time I checked a month ago, it was broken. Last I checked, it was broken for 2-3 months, which is just sad. Someone could get hurt if that thing falls. If that doesn't tell you the owners are cheap, I don't know what will. I'll use a colorful metaphor to describe how this feels; It feels like if the eldest members of a family told everyone else in the family "we're going to disown one of our kids for criticizing our decision". To add a cherry on top, tonight I was looking forward to celebrating the Assistant manager's birthday. Even a different bar I'm banned from made an exception to let me in for one night because a chosen family member of mine was celebrating his 50th birthday. After reading this, if you don't want to come here, I don't blame you. Seems Gallagher's has abandoned its favorite baby boy.

Our close friend passed away recently and they are having a Remembrance Birthday but unfortunately I will not be attending because I'm appalled at the way we were treated. Well anyway, I totally missed that a new place clearly opened back up a couple years ago, also selling vapor tacos specifically, until a few weeks ago, obviously on my way between The Hawk and Trademark, and decided to stop in and try a couple. As expected - they aren't too large, you could easily go through a whole bunch if you were hungry, which conveniently, I wasn't, particularly, so I got 3 and felt alright with that decision (though I would totally have gotten another birria or two anyway, as it was very good birria, but it was also almost 9 PM, and as it turned out, I'd gotten their last two tacos worth of birria already. It is very good birria though. (The asada I thought was just decent, but I'd totally come back for more birria tacos if I happened to be in the area on a Tuesday again.) Solid horchata, too. It had no flavor at all, the tortillas were stiff and hardly had any meat. The papa fron the tacos dorados had a wierd flavor. So, yes I was upset that I paid $107 for it to be terrible.

This is a simple dive bar but a big plus is they do have spectrum cable (the Dodgers games), so…read morethat's why I came here; they even had the game sound on. There's no food but there's a few free bar snacks with beverage purchase. Happy hour is 4-7, and the bartender was very nice and attentive. There's only beer and a few wine selections, just don't expect too much. Ample parking especially after 5pm. However, they're only open Thu-Fri-Sat-Sun.
