Recommend you shop around before using Nova Locksmith. I had a small lock snafu when trying to tighten my loose cylinder on Thanks giving day. Unfortunately the inner key cylinder popped out as well as some springs and tiny slugs and while it might be possible to fix this, I figured it would be far easier to have a locksmith provide a new cylinder and key it to my existing key. In the meantime, I popped the cylinder back in and used the deadbolt if not at home. I'd rather not pay emergency prices over the Thanksgiving weekend. I did browse online a cylinder can be between $15 - $35 (basic no frills) but you still have the issue with re-keying it to match your other doors. The last time I had my (multiple) doors re-keyed, the total cost was around $65-$75 (sometime in the last 10 years) and I know I also got several keys and two new cylinders from a locksmith who made housecalls. So today I started calling locksmiths and Nova locksmith charges $65 to show up at your door and then stated the cylinder would probably cost an additional $50. So basically $115 for less than 10 minutes of work. Not a bad price if you have a real emergency and are locked out or are unable to lock your door at all. But my repair wasn't an emergency and I can disassemble and reassemble my lock in 10 minutes myself and my deadbolt was working fine so I wasn't too worried. Hearing the price, I let Nova know I would do a bit of price comparison before scheduling an appointment. He told me to beware of nefarious locksmiths who will quote a LOW price and then end up charging much more later. I mentioned that is why I was calling around and asking questions. Obviously no one can quote an exact cost of a part without seeing the part but a ballpark figure or range should be doable for someone in the business. Next call to a local locksmith "Mario's locksmith" who has a store front on Mission Street. Realizing I could just bring the cylinder in (vs paying a premium for onsite service), I asked for a ball park quote. Mario quoted me approximately $30 for the cylinder and $10 to rekey it to my current key. He stated it would take 10-15 minutes in the shop. Needless to say I took my cylinder out of my door and hightailed it to Mario. In the end I spent $27 (rather than the $115) and am very happy I decided to shop around. Sure this meant I had to disassemble and reassemble my lock myself, but it is only a 10 minute job (5 screws), but at less than 1/4 of the price Nova Locksmith offered I'm happy to do it myself. I assume Nova locksmith is very professional and worth every penny in an emergency, but if you aren't in dire straits and are somewhat handy there are cheaper alternatives out there. I will also state they answered the phone promptly and were very courteous and helpful so if you have money to burn they might be the right choice for you. read more
