Yesterday, was Chinese New Year celebration so I wasn't about to go over the bridge. I decided to order a special with the same usual toppings, this time I got something new, garlic bread (it was delicious) Any ways, the pizza was not good at all. "Tradition!" (Tevye, "Fiddler On The Roof") One of our traditions is for me to take the day off from my job, and we go out to eat at the girl's choice, on her first and last days of school. This is 2020, and the govt tyrants are seeing how long they can keep our options limited, so there's not much available. But there is takeout pizza, and there is North Beach Pizza. My first big job was in the SF Financial District, and my coworkers raved about North Beach Pizza. I ate it, and agreed: this is good! Since then, they've opened other restaurants around the Bay Area, so others can enjoy it. I went onto Yelp and placed an order for two pizzas: a small build-your-own with pepperoni, bacon, and olives, and the medium meat lovers. No drinks; cans of Coke are $2.50 each, and why buy that when you can get Big Gulps three times bigger at the 7-11 one block away for less than half the price? (which is what we did) Said we'd be there at 1:00, and when we walked into the empty restaurant (the dine-in option is now against regulations), the pizzas were sitting there waiting for us. To quote our favorite burger place, we were In-n-Out, and off to Tilden to wipe the pizzas out. North Beach Pizza is not a greasy, salty pie. It's well made and healthier. The meat-lovers was loaded with pepperoni, ham, salami, and sausage, cheese covered some of the toppings, all of the toppings had a fresh taste to them. I ate some slices later in the day, and even after microwaving them they still had that good strong taste. As for the girl's pizza, it was so loaded down that you could barely see the cheese. She loved it. It's not as good as Zachary's, few pizzas are that good. I didn't get a good look inside, but it looks like a great place for large groups. Good sized parking lot, and you should be able to find parking on the street. Convenient location on University, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a favorite with students from Berkeley High and Cal, both which are less than a mile away. North Beach Pizza took their magic and planted it in the East Bay, so come on over if you want to see what the fuss is about. read more

This place use to be really great when it was on University. I order online so that I don't have to wait extra long in the restaurant to pick up my food. There's rarely anybody else in the restaurant. For the second time today I came around the estimated time for pick up (after). The guy at the counter was nice, and then he told me it would be 15 to 20 more minutes for my order to be ready, that's almost 20 minutes after the estimated time, again I know they may have a lot of takeout orders, but the restaurant is absolutely empty. The same guy at the counter gets 5 stars for customer service, he saw that I was sitting in my car out front and brought me my food. I really don't think it's the employees fault. I'm really disappointed in how this shop handled a recent mistake on their part. I teach in Berkeley Unified and I've ordered from this store for the past three years we've had school in person for our end-of-the-year class party. The pizza is good quality and they're usually really good about handling customer requests, like cutting slices thin to make the kid-sized. I placed an order for almost $250, and it was for kids, so I thought I'd get some extra attention given to make sure we got our order in a timely manner. Just to be sure, after placing the order online THE DAY BEFORE, I called the store, talked with an employee and confirmed all the order details, INCLUDING THE DELIVERY ADDRESS. I hung up feeling confident I'd once again get my order in a timely manner with no problem. Fast forward to the next day and when we finally got our delivery, the food was fine, but the driver was over 40 minutes late. THE STORE IS LOCATED LESS THAN A MILE FROM MY SCHOOL. Turns out the driver ended up in Oakland - he tried to blame the store for giving the wrong address, the store tried to blame the driver who had a less-than-stellar performance record. My kids had to scarf down their food, the parents I had invited to join us stressed out as their kids waited not knowing when the food would arrive, I stood in the street texting and calling the driver and the store the whole time and I had to send my students late to their after-lunch music class. All in all, when I spoke to the manager and they said they'd refund 20% of the order and the delivery fee, I thought that was fair as they said they'd been having an issue with the driver. However, after getting only $4.50 refunded I called again and asked what happened to the rest of the refund, they said the store owner said they received a "bad address" on the online order - after I called the day BEFORE the order delivery just to make sure they had everything right. After getting no further response from the store, I'm sad to say I'll never be using this shop again because at this location apparently it's the customer's fault when they make a mistake. I'm finally done with North Beach Pizza in Berkeley - never again! I used them off and on for many years when they were in my neighborhood. "Off and on" because sometimes the pizza came fast and was hot, fresh, and delicious but at other times it was extremely disappointing - a thick layer of gloppy cheese for example, and next time if you asked for light cheese, it would come with almost no cheese at all. It seemed like the quality of the food depended entirely on who was working there on a given night, so it was kind of like a lottery. And the delivery (ordered through the Slice app) was often hit or miss. Once, for example, we ordered half-and-half toppings but it didn't matter because when we opened the box, ALL of the toppings including all the cheese were piled up in one corner of the box, leaving just bare crust. Someone must have tipped the box on its side. Then last night we ordered a couple of pizzas before 7:30 and were told to expect delivery between 8:27 and 8:42. That seemed like a long wait, but whatever. At almost 9:00 we still had no pizza so got on a chat with Slice. We got an apology, a discount, and a revised delivery time of 9:35. At 9:50, still no pizza, I went to the Slice chat again and was told the store had delivered the pizza. Maybe, but not to us. They must have gone to the wrong address and gave some lucky person a couple of free pizzas. The order was canceled and fully refunded, but now it's 10 pm and we still haven't had dinner So screw 'em - I'm not dealing with them anymore. We came here for my husband's bday dinner after driving around town for a while. Kids wanted pizza, we did not, but they won. We have driven by this place many times and decided it would be the night to try it. The place was empty, except for all the workers. There was about 8 people working, which I thought was a lot but figured it was a family affair, which I love. The service was good. Our waitress was friendly and the service was good. The restaurant itself was rather clean. Outdated decor but charming, nonetheless. I like that my shoes were sticking to the floor and that the table cover didn't feel greasy. So, here's the reason it gets 3 stars. The food was ehhh. Our kids got the pizza and it was okay. Not the best but decent and not soggy. I got the fettuccini Alfredo and it was bland. I had to add a good amount of salt, pepper, and chili flakes to eat it. It also didn't have any broccoli like it said in the menu, but I was fine with that. This may sound weird, but there was too much chicken in the Alfredo. My husband got the calzone and which he said was okay enough. The garlic bread was not impressive, but the marinara was homemade and delicious. I also ordered an appetizer size meatballs which were okay because of the marinara. All in all, I don't think we would come here again for a special night. I'm always willing to give a place another try, but not sure when that will be. read more

DELICIOUS pizza, a bit under baked but the kitchen gladly baked it a bit more for me with no offenses or grumbling. A ridiculous business practices I've never seen .they list products they don't sell, ON the menu. I walked home with a receipt that didn't even have a date on it had the last 4 digits of my credit card and the amount but no date. An Sf phone number was on the receipt not the Berkeley number. This is completely illegitimate. I called the number in San Francisco and told them what happened and I got a snotty little girl who could barely speak english who told me I was yelling at her just because I spoke better english than she and I was making my points carefully she didn't like being yelled at? I never raised my voice.Is this the way business is going to go these days? doesn't sound like pizza to me doesn't sound like happy Italians to me and I've been around that all my life. My husband and I were on our way to Blondies on Telegraph,but I remembered how good North Beach pizza in SF was so we decided to give this place a try, and we are so glad we did! We each ordered a slice. My slice had pepperoni, mushrooms and onions and they sautéed my mushrooms and onions before adding it to my slice, how ingenious! It was delicious! Solid local spot serving up staunchly America style pizza. I didn't necessarily grow up with pizza like this so I can't say I crave it but according to others this is classic American pizza. Thick bready crust encased in a thick layer of sauce and cheese topped. I liked it well enough although I thought the cheese was a little much for my personal taste but I'm not a big cheese fan so it's probably just me. The only thing was that I ordered pizza with peppers, mushrooms and onions but I think the guy assumed I meant pepperoni when I said peppers because I got home to pepperoni pizza. My actual review is for 1 star. 2 stars is overall because their pizza is not as bad as the rest of their menu. My entire dinner was one big disappointment. It's like it was cooked under supervision of a 3 year old. First was pasta with chicken. Undercooked pasta with overcooked chicken with barely any sauce. Chicken was cubbed in tiny 1/4 inch cubes, no salt all. I was thinking why to cube chicken like this - because it was dark meat (if it was chicken at all!!) so you can't see what you are eating. Every damn bite I was doubting myself if in eating chicken or some other creature, no joke, it was trash, and that's where it end up. Second "dish" were mozzarella sticks. Apparently mozzarella doesn't melt, it dries! It was a consistency of super dry tofu. When you bite it you can see half hollow space inside the crust from shrunken cheese. Garlic bread was a Dutch crunch, most likely what they serve on their sandwiches, topped with not butter, margarine or vegetable oil and dried garlic and herbs. You can probably make this garlic bread at 7-11 across the street with their ingredients. And who puts carrots and celery in lasagna? Is that a minestrone style? There was nothing pleasing about this meal. It's crazy how the businesses can charge tho much money for such bad quality. This is nothing but disrespect to the customer. read more

Great small place. Visiting from LA and just wanted an easy lunch, pizza looked great but I went for my favorite Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Super yummy, wasn't overly cheesy, well seasoned and bread was crisp, fries were slightly salted and garnished and was perfect. Will come back to try the pizza before I head back down. We decided to dine in this time and we were not impressed :( our pizza had no flavor & was hard like cardboard! It reminded me of a frozen pizza. & we also found a hair so threw that slice away. If we weren't starving, we probably wouldn't have ate it. We ordered meatballs which was supposed to come with bread & butter which we never got. The guy was nice but never really checked on us, he seemed to be running everything so I understood he was busy doing other things. This is an old time favorite of ours. It's dive-ie inside. Yet we have had great take away and eat in experiences here. We've tried the other sites and have had just as good at each location. I think North Beach tries to hold a standard when it comes to making their pizza's. Plenty of cheese, plenty of chicken. Not too much sauce. Crust is just right and not too thick. Just had my own experience with a shady contactless refusing deliver driver from North Beach Pizza. He refused to follow Contactless delivery request and insisted on us walking outside to his car. While I got my mask, he stomped up the stairs, took a picture of the pizza on the designated table, then immediately picked it up and took it away. I spoke, then shouted from inside and outside as I had to chase after him to his car. Even after he had to turn around, he refused to let go of the pizza until I apologized for his inconvenience. The manager on duty is covering for this terrible behavior; I can see that I am not the only one who has had experiences like this. I will certainly not be ordering from here again. My mother always typically spends about $70 worth of pizza at north beach. (she loved this place). Well last night, we ordered two giant pepperoni pizzas from north beach and because my brothers answered the door (two young black men) the delivery driver wouldn't give us our pizzas. When my mother came down to talk to the delivery driver he kept saying "how do I know this is your address?" My mother of course kept confirming that she just placed this order and that he could even knock on our next door neighbors door if he felt more comfortable to double check. He then got super rude and aggressive with my mom, threatening that he would call the police on her. It's really disgusting to treat people who do business with you like this. The blatant racism at this location is not only saddening but disgusting as well. For anyone reading this, us POC (people of color) take such sayings as "I'm going to call the cops on you" as a threat. We even spoke to the manager and he said his driver had every right to threaten to call the cops. You lost loyal customers last night and I will NOT be dropping this because what you failed to realize is not only did you threaten to call the cops on just my mother or my two brothers but you threaten to call the cops on five young children who were present inside the home as well, you could've put all of their precious lives at risk because let's be real here, we all know what happens when you call the police on POC, they shoot first and ask questions later. read more

Ordered 2 medium pizzas and had an old gift voucher that didnt expire for $25 off a minimum purchase of $37.50. My total was $49 and change and they wouldnt honor the voucher saying that the minimum has always been $50. Not only would they let it slide but were unwilling to call the company to verify the voucher. So I left with no pizzas. read more

No stars. They managed to screw up an on-line order that specified the toppings. They checked it and admitted the error. Last time I ordered, they took 30 minutes longer than the estimate. Their excuse was there was a large order that came in. They didn't mention it when I ordered by phone so I assume the order came in after mine and they decided mine was not as important. From now on, I order from La Val's pizza which is better anyway (although not as close). The only reason I have ordered from North Beach is that my grand daughter likes the pizza. Came here after hearing a good thing or two about this place. It looks like some family-run joint out of the 1980s, with the stucco and wood trim. Parking is available in a nice big lot next to the building, as well as on the street. The interior is also dated (hello wood and vinyl), but this adds to the charm. The seats weren't ripped or anything, so I believe the ambience is intentional. The interior is nice and quiet as well, which is great for conversation. There's also a cold beer and wine store inside, but I didn't go there. My friends and I had the Golden Gate pizza. Generous chunks of chicken, artichokes, and other goodies. This was gobbled up in no time. Special mention. Service was friendly, and you really do get that family restaurant feel. Drinks are relatively cheap too, though I forget the pricing. If you're in the Berkeley area, this is a really great place to chill and chat with your friends. read more

So I've had the food many times. They are expensive, which isn't negative if it's worth it. But they got classic rock in front of house and rap (which in fine with as a listener, but not when your a business playing sift rock for the business) in the kitchen (explicit lyrics). They told me it would take an extra 15 minutes for the order on top of time it was supposed to take. I wanted to find a nearby pizzaria that we could regularly order from. The dough is thick and flavorless. There is too much cheese to sauce ratio and I'm not sure what kind of cheese is used but it's bland and seems like some generic bulk cheese. It's so flavorless it always tastes like white American cheese. We lived in NYC for many years so enjoy a thin NYC slice. This is not that at all. Frozen from the grocery or local franchise are better by far. And I can't believe what we've paid for this pie- I have deep, deep regret and will not order from here ever again. read more
